This look started with the house-made jeans. Except for my super wide-legs, I’ve been rocking skinnies for the better part of a decade. Only now am I remembering the joy of a good flare, and it’s bringing me back to a day after Studio 54 brunch. Though these are built differently than the bells of our past, they seem to expand with less resistance.

Cropped to just below the waist and pre-worn-in, this tee wants you to just hang out in it. It’s no muss, just a well proportioned texturized t-shirt.

Designer Andi Ballard’s aesthetic stems from her personal collection of thrift store finds and older bro’s hand-me-downs, all of which equal a soft layerable compilation of visceral favorites. Made from a blend of Tencel and Rayon, the hand feels well worn like a washed silk. It looks real relaxed here, but let down the sleeves and button it up for a suave effect.

The Striped Wedges: 80/20, $118

Guys usually have a difficult time finding pants are are both appropriate for the workplace and comfortable. (Not to mention ones that can easily transition from day to night time) This is where these khaki pants come in. They are stylish, comfy, and completely appropriate for every occasion.

The most important aspect of any mens garment is versatility. You can dress up these trousers for a boardroom meeting with a button down shirt, skinny tie, and dress shoe. You can also dress it down with your favorite slip ons and a basic tee.

Jessy, our fabulous office assistant, fooled around with a floor length denim skirt. Keeping with the drawn out proportions, this angle hanging sweater falls in line, oversized.  Disclaimer: If not styled correctly, the long jean skirt could turn 90′s Daria right quick. I have faith you can avoid that mistake and make it work now.

I played around with a pair of ever so slightly khaki-white ankle touching skinnies. I rolled them up touch for good measure to show off my old man gold toe socks sticking out of my suede olive platforms. The top of the pants hit right at my belly button, making it a solid height for a cropped shirt. A sheer button up over a velvet bandeau makes these light pants feel dark.

I also tried out their standard jeans – not pictured here, because they’re standard jeans, and you know how they should look. The fit and feel, however, are anything but standard. Years and years of experience in denim mean mastery. They have the kind of stretch that you love your jeggings for, but they are true denim. They fit snug, but didn’t leave any muffin or pastry looking hiplines. I could do squats, kicks, lunges with ease. Sam Lim (our editor) told me I looked really skinny; I blushed a little, but had to agree. It’s one baddd Mother. And my butt looked great.

1. Wear more fur. I want to be on PETA‘s “Most Wanted List” in 2011. Hell, I’d kill a family of chinchillas, skin them and wear them if I could. Nature is going to shit anyway, so why not put those endangered species to good use? Drape me from head to stiletto in fur and if possible, blood diamonds — I will single-handedly ruin what’s left of this world.

2. No more jeggings. This is a hard one. I officially own more pairs of jeggings than I do of actual jeans, but the trend is already becoming horribly outdated. Still, on a bloated day, there’s nothing more comfortable than breathable cotton. Except maybe breathable cotton and a pint of Mint Chocolate Chip iced cream. I mean, you’re already bloated, might as well go down with the ship.

3. Find shoes that actually fit me. Yesterday I found a bit of blood in my socks from my combat boots digging unmercifully into my heels. And my pinky toe is all but dead from being constantly wedged into vintage shoes. But sometimes you have to pounce on a Cuban heel and suck it up for the sake of fashion.

4. Learn to tie a bowtie. Right now I only (sadly) have one bowtie, a clip on chambray from American Apparel. However, it behooves a gentleman to know how to properly affix a bowtie. That, and to mix a proper cocktail and to properly kiss another man with tongue.

5. Rely less on H&M. Gaga knows I love those damned Swedes. The majority of my wardrobe derives from Hennes and Mauritz, but as my style and tastes develop, I will inevitably have to stray from the flock. However, if they continue with their all-star collaborations, I might have to throw this resolution under the bus, much like the year I decided to “cut back on drinking.”

6. Bring back the ascot. This has been a resolution of mine since I was about 14 and why not?, it’s a perfectly reasonable neck accessory that doesn’t at all remind people of hapless, blond, teenaged snoops.  Over the years, I’ve periodically worn ascots to varying degrees of success. Once, I wore it on a job interview and I like to think it had nothing to do with my not receiving a callback.

7. Get photographed by The Sartorialist. This is partly just me stroking my own vanity. Okay, it’s completely just me stroking my own vanity, but dammit, do you think I’m walking around in capes, sequins and harem pants for fun?! Okay, I totally am, but I would at least like it documented for posterity’s sake.

8. Find a practically-sized day bag. When traipsing about New York, I like to be prepared for any and everything, thus I carry a man purse that would put Mary Poppins’ magical carpet bag to shame. More than once have I pulled out a coat rack from the depths of my tote, but no longer! I’m actually contemplating a stylish backpack (suggestions, anyone?), or a medium-sized tote for my everyday travels. And that’s what I like to call “progress.”

9. Find a good tailor. A good tailor is absolutely essential — not just to let out one’s clothing after gorging on holiday fare, though that in itself is god’s work — but sometimes the perfect pair of pants can be a bit too big or a bit too short. Enter a tailor and for a few bucks, those Cheap Mondays look a little less cheap.

10. Shop more. The bottom-line to all this resolving and promise-making is that I need to step up my shopping game. That means I’ve got to throw around more plastic than an Ultimate Frisbee championship, roll out more dough than a pizzeria and carry more bags than Oprah‘s eyes.

It’s a tough job, but in order to truly make a change in 2011, it’s necessary.

A couple hundred biz cas industry folk gathered in a modest, all-white-painted space located at SoHo and Tribeca’s border. Guests sipped rosemary-garnished cocktails and observed the brand’s photography until Senior Vice President Erik Joule spoke.

Joule delivered a dynamic oration hammering down the points of Levi’s eco-initiatives. When he left the podium, I grabbed Joule for a couple quick questions. Here’s what the Levi’s Senior Vice President had to say.

Levi’s is a brand that’s been around for a very long time. What are some ingredients that go into staying relevant in fashion over time?

In the past 15 years, Levi’s actually hasn’t been that relevant. It wasn’t until a couple years ago that we had a major resurgence. I think we lost touch with who we were.

To stay relevant you have to always know who you are. For a brand like Levi’s, it’s about who we are in the context of what’s going on. We’re best when we embody the events of our time.

Today there has been a return to sanity and simplicity, and that’s the core of our brand. For Levi’s that’s what it’s really about.

When you throw out a word like “branding” a lot of people go crazy. Many of your competitors use vibrant colors and flashy campaigns. But your campaigns are just simple, black and white images. Why does Levi’s choose the simple campaigns it does?

If you think about the core of our product that’s the foundation, the 501 jean. It’s a well-crafted, beautiful pair of jeans but it’s really simple.

We went away from this for a time, and we tried to do something else. But that’s not who we are. We make very simple products. So that’s why the images are simple – they embody our brand.

I think simplicity is very underrated. People always think about adding more. But they don’t think about removing.

Continuing along their path of evolution, Natural Selection Denim, have extended, upgraded, increased and developed for Autumn/Winter 2010, with their first full collection of men’s apparel, alongside their pure denim range.

For this season, the team introduced a new 13Oz Fabric made of Zimbabwean cotton from Nihonmenpu mills in Okayama Japan. This fabric is available in its raw form and also as a new wash, PILGRIM; a highly authentic wash which replicates a five year, vintage jean. Also added to the range is the DRIFTER wash featuring high contrast ‘skeleton’ whiskering, which has a three-dimensional visual impact.

Natural Selection have skillfully developed a range of apparel to sit alongside their denim, and from this season introduce two selvedge chino fabric pants from the Kuroki Mill in Japan. This is offered in a classic chino style and colour with subtle military detailing with a selvedge continuous fly, a world first innovation on a long lost heritage patent.

Boyfriend denims are my favorite jeans. I also love suspenders, especially the “old fashioned” kind with button attachements. These suspenders can be often found from secondhand stores and they can be attached with safetypins. Clara shows here how. To get you jeans t look more “dirty”, spary a light coat of golden spraypaint on them in selected areas. It will look like dust and come off in a few washes.

After their intitial denim collection launched and became super popular with celebs and fashion devotees, the Swedish brand  expanded to include dresses, button-up shirts, and more.  The Fall collection includes bondage details, along with some rips, tears and various distressing methods for good measure.  I’m in love with the oversized sweater with a succession of holes down the sleeve.

We’re not usually the ones to talk about developments at Banana Republic, but when they invited us to attend a blogger breakfast to check out their new collection of Premium Denim, we figured it was time to bury our metaphorical hatchet and head over to their new Soho Outpost. We were in for a surprise.

When I first arrived at the store I was expecting the Banana Basics, khakis, suiting and zero frills wardrobe staples. What I found was an array of great trend current must-haves and a fresh series of denim in figure flattering cuts and washes. Gone were was the stoggyness that always made me think of Banana Republic as the spot to head to for Casual Friday attire, now there was life and excitement to the space.

The womens denim was a definite highlight with a bunch of new styles which were designed to please a various body types. The new Slouchy Skinny jeans are ideal for women looking for a fitted leg with more room in the butt. Becks tried on a pair, but settled with a Curvy Boot, that hugged her curves perfectly and forgivingly let her tick one full size off her belt.

Basics were still on the menu, but a mix of lux was added to pieces. Cashmere/cotton blended crewnecks, silk tops and must have accessories all added a much needed update to the Banana Republic brand. The mens section was also completely changed with more of a focus on stylish fashion pieces for a more refined New Yorker. Jackets were fitted and offered a stylish cut that really made certain looks present themselves as a fresh alternative to prep and Club Monaco’s metropolitan black & white offerings.

Some added perks to the new Banana Republic Monogram store is an in-store stylist. Our stylist was the uber informative Genelle Franklin (pictured above) who walked us through the store and helped pair Becks jeans with a pair of matching accessories including a great pair of heels, top and necklace. Additionally, a concierge will be added to each store in the spring, to give shoppers extra perks like discounted theater tickets, restaurant reservations and general must head to spots in NYC.

Personally, I feel this visit resparked my interest in Banana Republic, not only cause it’s a great place for denim, but cause it’ll soon become a must-shop resource for out-of-towners in Soho.

Now all we need is a great designer/celebrity collaboration and I think we’ve got ourselves a brand new fave destination.

1. Naked and Famous- Rare and unique fabrics from Japan, high quality and satire play on our celebrity obsessed culture. Win.

2. April 77- Known for their attitude and underground influence, not wallet-breaking price. Made in France.

3. Cheap Monday- Tons of crazy prints and colored washes. Made in Sweden.

4. Replay-Great skinny and ‘boyfriend’ style, in a bunch of interesting washes. Made in Italy.

5. Acne- A ton of variety in mens’ fits, and repeat winner of ‘Designer of the Year’ by Swedish Elle.  Made in Sweden.

6. K(T)subi- Formerly Tsubi, currently Ksubi, this brand invented themselves based on fit, and has continued to outfit surfers in super, super jeans ever since. Made in Australia.

7. Nudie- Made from the best Italian, Turkish, American, and Japanese qualities using the best techniques. Made in Italy, with the only con being they don’t have a women’s line (yet?).

8. Diesel- I know people that swear by Diesel, mostly skinny guys who can never find sizes small enough for their 26 inch waists and still long enough for their 6’0 tall frames.  Diesel has always been known for their high-quality and long lasting denim. I may be impartial because I love everything Diesel makes, not just their jeans. Made in Italy.

9. Levis- After coming out with the 510 and 511, Levis seemed to have redeemed themselves as every hipster and musician’s best friend. Made in the US!

10. G Star- ‘Raw’ denim. Prides themselves in being about nothing more than the product itself, keeping it fashionable and well-fit. Made in the Netherlands.

Whether or not this guy is a model or a random dude who just happens to walk with his groceries ‘casually’ slung over his shoulder (sure), I like it.  The grays are pleasantly balanced by the light jeans, my only complaint: if you’re going to wear pre-ripped jeans, buy ones that don’t look pre-ripped.

Worn in, distressed, and disheveled is the name of the game for the up and coming denim label Current/Elliott. Although not entirely excluded, kudos to LA based designers Emily Current and Merritt Elliott for not exhibiting the usual favoritism toward super skinny jeans in their latest collection. The all-inclusive line features denim of the new and old variety such as the super bell-bottom, the high-waisted wide leg, and the baggy, slouchy, neither here nor there boyfriend fit. And lest you think it ends there, the collection also consists of dresses, jackets and skirts, all of which are made from super soft, Japanese stretch denim. A refreshing departure from the posh, starchy denim of late, these jeans are made for living.

A ton of indies asked us about the Surface to Air / Justice collaboration and when it would become available.  Well get ready to drop a couple bucks cause the extremely limited collection is now for sale on the web.  Including the coolest leather jacket OF THE YEAR!!! the looks will go fast.
