Last night, Tracey and I went Spring clothes shopping and stopped by the basics destination Uniqlo. Immediately, I realized that the +J collection (Jill Sander for Uniqlo) was gone only to find it on sale downstairs. Keep reading…

There were tons of covetable items, including denim for $29, trenches in tons of different colors for $39-$79, and v neck sweaters for $39. Get it while it lasts…

“There’s too much of everything right now. Would I open a store in New York today? No. Retailing has to be reconsidered. It’s become a commodity that’s less creative. There’s too many stores selling the same kind of merchandise and it’s not as beautifully chosen. It’s ruined the enthusiasm for fashion.”

Basically, boutiques need to be unique in order to survive. If four shops on Bleecker, within a three block radius, carry the same Jill Sander coat, of course shops aren’t going to make any money! Customers could use an incentive every now and then too.

Recently speaking of collaborations, here is one that I wait for in immense anticipation. No, we’re not talking Jill Sander for Forever 21 or anything like that, we’re talking about the collaboration of fashion designer Stella McCartney and pop artist Ed Ruscha (well known for the 20th Century Fox logo). Grab your calendars, because October 23rd at 10PM marks the date and time that Iconoclasts airs their documentary “Stella McCartney + Ed Ruscha” on the Sundance Channel.

Lucky for me, I was able to take a look at the documentary before the premier, and let me tell you, it is was completely worth watching! Unlike many documentaries, the subjects Stella and Ed actually tell their own creation stories, explain their relationship and pitch ideas to one another for an upcoming collaboration line. I really appreciated the behind the scenes footage of Stella at fittings and Ed explaining inspiration for paintings. And by the looks and sounds of the the McCartney/Ruscha collaboration line, I’ll definitely be keeping my eyes peeled for it! 

My only criticism is that the documentary ended with Ruscha accept McCartney’s pitches for the collaboration. What! We don’t get a sneak peek of the line? Just throw the dog a bone already would you!

Richard Nicoll Spring 2009...hmm, the style and color look familiar.

Call the fashion police! There is not an outfit crisis at hand, but a rather sneaky designer stealing inspiration from minimalist German designer, Jill Sander! It seems as if Richard Nicoll, who presented his Spring collection at London Fashion Week, was fresh out of ideas and thought he’d “borrow” the same suit style and bright pink color for his collection. But Nicoll didn’t stop there! He even had the audacity to siphon Sander’s bold and bright solid color scheme into his whole collection! Take a look at the evidence and see for yourself (Sander Vs. Nicoll). Shame, shame Nicoll…the fashion industry raised you better than that.

I usually don’t like Jill Sander, but with Raf Simons being the new creative director, I think I really like the direction the collection is taking. Here are a few images of the coats for Fall from Jill Sander, and they are gorgeous. The tailoring is impeccable, and the style is very modern and trendy.
