“I’ve been a huge fan of The Roots for years,” says Varvatos, “They are one of the most innovative musical forces on the planet.”

True story. Also, Black Thought, most underrated MC. There, I said it.

Danny Clinch shot The Roots at Republic Airport in New York right as they were getting off the plane — an homage to how rock stars traveled in the 70s. Creative director Stephen Niedzwiecki explains:

“The way The Stones, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin and The Beatles traveled had a huge impact on the direction for this season’s campaign…Led Zeppelin’s plane had fireplaces built in. So that’s what inspired us to shoot them in that way.”

And that’s why Led Zeppelin is fucking awesome. Anyhoo, in addition to the airport scenario there are other “image-based” shots that will debut in the September issues of GQ, Esquire, Vanity Fair, Details and other fash mags.

And as a special treat, The Roots threw together a little impromptu number on the tarmac:

Anna Wintour and Marc Jacobs stopped by Jimmy Fallon‘s dark corner of the world to discuss Fashion’s Night Out, Marc’s alleged kilt and Anna’s ability to break people.

If you take time out of your busy (?) day — and you should — take 5 guesses as to what happened backstage before Anna and Marc stepped out on stage. Here are mine:

1. Anna and Marc armwrestling match; Anna won

2. Marc forgot/neglected to wear underwear beneath his kilt-half-kilt

3. Sophia Coppola fell off the face of the Earth

4. Marc, Anna, Jimmy keg stand match; Anna won

5. Lorenzo Martone boiled a rabbit in Marc’s dressing room; Anna won

The show started off with a Glee-themed fagtastic bang with Tina Fey, Jane Lynch, Jon Hamm and last living Golden Girl Betty White (some say she’s overexposed, but she’s 800 years old and could go any minute so I’ll take as much as I can, thank you) joining the Glee kids and Fallon for a cover of “Born to Run.” It was pretty much downhill from there, but it was a gentle and slow descent, made more comfortable by getting all the fun awards out early.

Proving that there is a god somewhere, Jane Lynch (woefully sans a pantsuit yet again) picked up the Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy. Eric Stonestreet won a well-deserved Outstanding Supporting Actor for Modern Family, which also went home with the Outstanding Comedy Series trophy at the end of the night.

Edie Falco won her fourth Emmy, this time for Lead Actress in a Comedy Series. A controversial choice, perhaps, but Carmine Soprano literally shits Emmys . I’m holding out hope for Amy Poehler next year, though, that is if Parks and Rec makes it that long. And some guy from some show on CBS I will continue to ignore, I mean, Jim Parsons won Lead Actor.

My frequent nemesis January Jones might have lost to Kyra Sedgwick for Outstanding Lead Actress in  a Drama, but she won best dressed in my book, wearing a gorgeous Atelier Versace gown. Though I wish she had done her hair in a chignon and left the messy bed head hair to Cammy Diaz.

Aaron Paul -- Wrap him up, I'll take him to go.

Bryan Cranston picked up his third consecutive Emmy for Lead Actor for Breaking Bad and his hottie of a co-star Aaron Paul won for Supporting. Newcomer Archie Panjabi took home Outstanding Supporting Actress for The Good Wife. Then Mad Men sauntered off with the Outstanding Drama Series for the third year in a row.

Though Betty White and Neil Patrick Harris won for their guest starring roles on SNL and Glee, respectively, their trophies were handed out at the Shmemmys earlier, thus robbing us of what would surely have been a hot and heavy make-out session everyone…?…the gays…?…okay, that I have been anticipating since the nominees were announced.

That was one of a few disappointments in an otherwise — dare I say it? — great show. The awards, for the most part, went to the right people and I got to scream at Brittany Murphy and Rue McClanahan one more time during the In Memoriam slideshow. The fashion at the Emmys, however, left a lot to be desired.

The big theme of the night was Greek/Egyptian, with a lot of one shoulders, goddess gowns and geometric necklines, heavy on the jewelry and metallics.

The red carpet was a big snore, except for a few bright spots, such as Anna Paquin in Alexander McQueen and the aforementioned Betty Draper.

From what I’ve been reading, most people hate both of these looks, but that’s the price you pay for bringing high fashion to American TV sets.  There were, admittedly, some horrible missteps and yes I am looking at you Heidi Klum.

Hot tranny mess, working that tired drag for all its worth

The usually flawless supermodel and Emmy nominee (?) opted for a Marchesa mini. Meanwhile, if I never see another Marchesa gown on the red carpet I could die happy. The amazing Lauren Graham also faltered a bit in Yigal Azrouël, riding that damned Grecian theme straight into hell.

Is that bracelet bulletproof?

Lea Michele went overboard with the ruffles in Oscar de la Renta and her boobs always looked as if they were about to jump ship as well.

She should have taken a cue from co-star Dianna Argon who looked beautiful in  Carolina Herrera.

I would have liked the dress to be a little shorter, however, about mid-calf,  to play off a 50s silhouette. But, as the New Directions kids put it, you can’t always get what you want. Then again, at least Lea didn’t follow in the tranny footsteps of her other castmate, Naya Rivera, who apparently thought she was going to a quinceañera.

God bless her for trying.

Gabourey Sidibe, best known for her nominated role in Precious, is everywhere, literally. Last night I spotted her on Jimmy Fallon, she’s on the cover of V magazine, and has an interview in the current issue of Harper’s Bazaar. We’ve got the interview after the jump.

On doing the Harper’s Bazaar shoot: “I feel like a model. It justifies everyone in my life who told me I wouldn’t be anything until I lost weight. It justifies that little girl who cried because she didn’t think she could be in front of the camera. And it’s for other girls who feel like they can’t do this or that and feel like they’re not pretty and not worthy of having their photo taken.”

On her favorite outfit, the red David Meister dress she wore to the L.A. premiere of Precious: “It was so va va voom, my boobs looked so good in it. I had diamonds on too. Diamonds really do it.”

On her confidence: “People always ask me, ‘You have so much confidence. Where did that come from?’ It came from me. One day I decided that I was beautiful, and so I carried out my life as if I was a beautiful girl. I wear colors that I really like, I wear makeup that makes me feel pretty, and it really helps. It doesn’t have anything to do with how the world perceives you. What matters is what you see.”

On being excited about other big stars now in her orbit: “Man! Justin Timberlake is always good. God, there are so many hot dudes in Hollywood right now. I’m such a fanny, fanny girl. Bradley Cooper. How hot is he?”

On her frustration with some media synopsis’ of Precious: “‘Gabby Sidibe is an overweight black girl who is illiterate and pregnant by her father,’” she parrots. “Look, I am black. I’m also overweight, but that’s not the point of the story. The point is the abuse and her bravery. This stuff happens to skinny people, to white people, to so many different people that they’ve missed the point if they say it’s about a fat girl.”

VIDEO: There is something so weird about finding out that Jimmy Fallon wears Tom Ford. Also, a commercial? Tom where is this commercial?!? If anyone can find this please send it. Something about Tom Ford saying “It’s still big” just needs to be out there.

USA Today published the first look at Drew Barrymore’s film ‘Whip It,’ which hits close to home for me because it was one of the earlier films shot in Michigan. It stars Barrymore, Ellen Page, Jimmy Fallon, Eve, Daniel Stern, and Marcia Gay Harden, and is about roller derby in Texas. I’m thinking Little Miss Sunshine meets Rollerball?
