After an enlightening hike up Peru’s Machu Picchu, Lindsey Thornburg shrouded her focus in cloaks. Like John Bartlett, she put her vast collection of Pendleton blankets to work to manifest her vision. With these enveloping cloaks riding atop fiery printed silks and heavy breezing dresses, she’s brought her Colorado roots to light in New York. Having studied philosophy in Santa Barbara, her vibes are strong and majorly thought provoking. Spring sprung at me from the online boutique Totokaelo, and we dug a little deeper. With male models smothered in mud and sailor stripes, cloaked in the Pendleton blankets of the 1800s, John Bartlett fused the little barbarian boys of “Lord of the Flies” with Steve Zissou’s aquatic life for a chic longshoreman’s collection. It also appeals to the eco-conscious, as John Bartlett has just taken the leap to make his company entirely cruelty-free. As a longtime vegan, this jump was “the best, most important, and simplest choice I’ve ever made,” he explained to Ecouterre. Bartlett now uses recycled materials, like his own blankets for the striped coats and ponchos, along with leather substitutes like ultrasuede. It’s his first collection back after a couple years off the runway, he’s been busy saving the animals; most notably his true love, dogs. How he jives his environmental and fashion loves into one.

All A-Board! Marc, Jack and Laz Join CFDA’s Board of Members

The Council of Fashion Designers of America had their bi-annual meeting this week where they elected three new designers to their board: Marc Jacobs and Proenza Schouler’s Jack McCullough and Lazaro Hernandez.

I would’ve thought that Marc was already on the board, if not president Diane von Furstenbrerg‘s girl Friday, but mazel to the kids, who were nominated by the board of directors way back in July. They’ll be joining the ranks of 26 designers, including Oscar de la Renta, Narciso Rodriguez, Tory Burch, Calvin Klein’s Francisco Costa and Norma Kamali. Meanwhile, Nicole Miller, John Bartlett and Richard Lambertson are leaving the board of directors to join the Emeritus board. [WWD]

Under bright spot lights, three groups of men modeled three different styles that inspire the designer – university prep, rugged military and refined lumberjack. “The main thing to keep in mind is that these pieces are designed for guys,” Bartlett said. “The fit is trim, yet relaxed, with engaging details that aren’t over-decorated. I paid very close attention to the hand and feel of the fabrics, the washes and the best in noble fibers to create the highest price to quality ratio possible.”

Look for John Bartlett Consensus this August at Bergner’s, Boston Store, Carson Pirie Scott, Elder-Beerman, Herberger’s, Younkers and Parisian.

With cuts reminiscent of 1970s Saturday Night Fever, John Bartlett’s Fall 2010 collection was just as hip as it was classy. Men strutted down the runway in cutoff knickers and belted blazers while the ladies, in similar looks, flaunted knee-high lace up boots and leather pants. With a parlor vibe and a bell-bottom cut to the pants, Bartlett’s aesthetic shines through. In my opinion, this collection is certainly for an older crowd, perhaps those who actually lived during the 1970s…let the models be indicative of that!

Leather played a huge part in trends for women in 2008. From leggings to cropped biker jackets, leather ruled our daily wardrobes. There seems to be a trickle down effect into the Autumn/Winter Men’s Shows as well. Everyone from Gucci, John Bartlett and Prada, showed that leather was the choice for the upcoming fall season, even down to men’s leather pants. Now, you may think that a man with leather legs is a tad bit questionable. Yet, it is quite sexy for a man to have the confidence to wear his YSL leather pants with pride.
