4. Quit this: Puka shell necklaces Ah, the puka shell necklace, or as I like to think of it, shorthand for letting everyone know you're a complete tool.

Hit this: American Apparel Going from the Eagle to the Apparel, though, is not so much a show of growth so much as a show of wanting to get laid. But even stoners need to slut it up sometimes.

Hit this: Newsboys A newsboy cap adds a certain air of jauntiness and charm. I mean, who would you rather get high with, beanie boy or Brad Pitt? Though the beanie guy looks baked as all get out.

After over a year of speculation and conjecture, Dior finally has named Simons the artistic director of haute couture, women’s ready-to-wear and accessories collections — his official title. Simons will make his debut in July during Paris Couture Week.

Now that that’s finally over — thank god — what do you think of the appointment? [WWD]

1. Alexander Wang Sweatshop Controversy. Well, this pretty much came out of nowhere but when a young designer at a crucial moment in his career gets hit with as serious as an allegation as using sweatshops to produce his clothes, the ramifications could be enormous.

2. Shake-Ups at Jil Sander and Yves Saint Laurent.  Would it be a Paris Fashion Week without someone leaving somewhere under a cloud of suspicion? Stefano Pilati finally submitted to the frequent rumors of his demise with Hedi Slimane set to replace him, but what of poor Raf Simons, who's now unceremoniously on his keester after years of loyal service?

3. Christian Dior's ever-revolving door of candidates. Yeah, this is still happening, but with Bill Gaytten finally getting a handle on this creative director thing -- the Christian Dior Fall 2012 collection wasn't awful...it was actually rather pretty, if nothing revelatory, and you know how much it pains me to say that -- there might be no need for Maxime Simoens or Haider Ackermann or whoever's the designer dujour.

4. Kanye West returns. God bless his heart. Like any artist with a pair, Kanye West isn't letting the negative reviews of his last collection get to him and he's returning today with his second offering. No one ever said fashion was an easy game to get into and Ye's got a long road ahead of him, but we all gotta crawl before we can walk. Unless you're Jourdan Dunn who tweeted that Kanye's shoes for the show tonight were "sexy as fuck but you can't walk in them!" Oh, and fellow model Leomie Anderson said Mr. West "cussed" at a girl for not being able to walk in the precarious pumps. Of course, Anderson threw some shade behind West, tweeting "her walk isn't top notch in kitten heels." #shitmodelssay

- Parsons took on FIT in their annual student designer competition, the Fusion Fashion Show, with Parsons strutting home the victor. [Paper]

- Brazilian hoofer Caroline Trentini editorially jumped the broom this weekend, marrying photographer Fabio Bartelt. [Made in Brazil]

- John Galliano’s still lurking around Paris, as dandy as he wants to be in a beanie and pencil-thin moustache. [WWD]

- Marc Jacobs pays his models in “trade,” i.e. clothes and judging from his last collection, a lot of girls went home severely underpaid. [Huff Po]

- Human Care Bear Alber Elbaz broke out his singing chops during his tenth anniversary party and then a glitter rainbow shot out from his bowtie. [Grazia]

- Vogue Italia‘s editrix-in-chic Franca Sozzani will receive France’s highest civilian honor, the Legion of Honor, which she will hopefully turn into a cocktail ring used to slap insolent interns. And she’ll call it “getting honored.” [The Cut]

While Simons had been in talks with Christian Dior to take over after John Galliano threw himself on the altar of shame and scandal, according to WWD, the “parties failed to reach an agreement and it appears unlikely Simons will join the French firm.” And there we have it. Dior is said to be considering using a team in lieu of a singular designer as well as “ possibly adding some young, up-and-coming talents.”

As for Simons, professional spirit animal Anna Dello Russo has some thoughts on his next step. Speaking to Fashionista yesterday, Dello Russo prophesied, “I think he [Simons] will concentrate on his own line, [with] his name. I think maybe adding womens next to men.”

ADR hath spoken, and so it must be.

German-born designer Jil Sander founded her eponymous label in 1968 and served as its creative director until 2000, a year after Prada bought a 75% stake in the company. Sander butted heads with Prada CEO Patrizio Bertelli and resigned as creative director and chairwoman, nearly all of her design and production team leaving with her.

The Jil Sander label then suffered, creatively and commercially, reporting its first ever net loss at $9.4 million. Bertelli had once said  ”A brand as strong as Jil Sander doesn’t need to rely on the name of a designer,” but there he was, figuratively on his hands and knees, negotiating a truce with Sander, who returned in 2003 to head the label. But that truce too proved short-lived and Sander wiped her hands of Bertelli and Prada for good in 2004.

In 2005, Raf Simons was brought in to replace Sander as creative director to great effect and just a year later Jil Sander was sold to British private equity firm Change Capital Partners for $120 million. Simons has successfully reinvigorated the brand while remaining true to its minimalist roots, making it a hit with both critics and consumers alike, and as a result his contract with the brand was recently extended for an unknown period.

However, Gala, a German tabloid, reports that Sander, now 68, could return to the house she built over 40 years ago in as little as four weeks, making way for an announcement — perhaps during Paris Fashion Week — that would finally silence the rumor mill and put a nail in the coffin of Gallianogate. - Michelle Williams took a break from snatching trophies to star in Band of Outsiders‘ latest campaign. [Paper]

- Miu Miu will debut a limited edition collection of 46 handbags during the major fashion weeks beginning with New York. Start coveting, kids. [Fashionista]

The former Christian Dior creative head was asked to design a tree for London hotel Claridge's back in 2009. We love how the frosty wooden tree is adorned with blue snow leopards, dragonflies and parrots.

A more accessible version of the Galliano tree, white branches look majestic with shiny, teal blue ornamentation.

Yes, it's missing the whole green element, but this tree is both eco-friendly and mess-free.

My heart is doing back flips for my main ho Martha who thought of this nautical tree. Seashells, starfish and sailboats conjure memories of warm weather adventures.

Forget what your mom said about pink Christmas trees being tacky because we think this retro version is super chic.

Simons has been with Jil Sander since 2005 and his contract was recently extended for an unknown duration, meaning Dior will most likely have to buy him out of it. Should that prove easily said and done, Simons still won’t be able to produce a ready-to-wear collection by March, let alone a couture collection by January; therefore Bill Gaytten and the Dior atelier would continue to handle design duties in the mean time.

There might be an even bigger hurdle on the horizon, however, as Yves Saint Laurent reportedly has their eye on Simons as well. Stefano Pilati, if rumors are to be believed, is always on the verge of being fired and his contract expires in March. YSL hasn’t indicated whether they will extend Pilati’s deal or not, but considering that his role is a constant source of speculation, it’s hard to put much weight behind this.

Meanwhile, there’s no time frame for Simons’ appointment, and Dior — of course — has neither confirmed or denied these reports. But of all the names bandied about since John Galliano‘s dismissal earlier this year, Raf Simons is one of the strongest and most viable, don’t you think? [WWD]

2. The September Issue (2009) Step inside the hallowed halls of the fashion Bible that is U.S. Vogue. We get a rare glimpse of the woman behind the bob and Chanel sunglasses, as Anna Wintour admits with a palpable hint of regret that the distinguished members of her family think what she does is "quite funny." But it's Grace Coddington's bleeding artistic heart that stays with you throughout. See Also: Bill Cunningham New York (2010) Bill Cunningham, legendary streetstyle photographer for the New York Times has a Puritanical simplicity to his life but a couturier's eye for trends and detail that is documented in this tender portrait, featuring the likes of Wintour, Carmen Dell'Orefice, Anna Piaggi and Michael Kors.

3. Breakfast at Tiffany's (1961) Though not necessarily a film about fashion, Breakfast at Tiffany's is the quintessential fashion film. Audrey Hepburn as Holly Golightly continues to teach and inspire girls and certain boys everywhere on how to be chic, how to be urbane and how to live fabulously in New York -- or at least how to pretend. And there has never been a more iconic Little Black Dress ever put on screen. See Also: Darling (1965) Darling's Diana Scott is the British, unapologetically wanton version of Holly Golightly. A morally-suspect fashion model who sleeps her way to the top, Diana still manages to come off as a naïve and sympathetic character -- despite exhibiting behavior to the contrary -- thanks to Julie Christie's Oscar-winning portrayal.

4. Unzipped (1995) Sure, there are other backstage, behind the curtain, beneath the bustle documentaries of fashion designers, but none are as stylish as Isaac Mizrahi's Unzipped. When Isaac was the new, young It designer on the block; when Naomi, Cindy, Christy and Linda ruled the catwalks; when Eartha Kitt was still alive and purring -- Unzipped documents the height of 90s fashion, right before the balloon went bust. See Also: Valentino: The Last Emperor (2008) Whereas Unzipped follows a designer in the earlier stages of his career, The Last Emperor observes a master -- Valentino Garavani -- as he takes his final bow with his partner of 50 years by his side, Giancarlo Giammetti.

5. Funny Face (1957) Audrey Hepburn makes a return to the list, but this time she is the unlikely model Jo Stockton, a bookworm with an unconventional look that inspires love in photographer Dick Avery, played by Fred Astaire. A fantastic set of photoshoots and gowns by Hubert de Givenchy are the main attractions, but Kay Thompson as salty editrix Maggie Prescott could give Miranda Priestly a run for her money. See Also: The Women (1939) Though Funny Face features a climactic runway show, The Women spared no expense in shooting its nearly 10-minute fashion show in color, despite the entire film being in black and white. Do not mistake this classic with that awful remake Diane English regurgitated a few years ago.

6. Mahogany (1975) Arguably Diana Ross's greatest cinematic achievement -- if only for this -- Mahogany chronicles the rise of supermodel Mahogany from the slums of Chicago to the runways of Paris and finally to international acclaim as a designer in her own right, only to give it all up for the man she loves...a move Ms. Ross would openly spit upon, but which she plays with considerable believability. See Also: Gia (1998) While Mahogany is a fictional supermodel who dabbles on the dark side, Gia Carangi was the real thing whose excesses eventually got the best of her. The film is best remembered, however, for launching Angelina Jolie to stardom, thus ensuring Jennifer Aniston's lifelong ire.

7. Clueless (1995) What can one say about Clueless? The perfect teen movie, it's infinitely quotable -- "You're just a virgin...who can't...DROIVE." -- and is there a character with as enviable a closet as Cher Horowitz? Bonus points for first introducing me and perhaps a majority of the world to Azzedine Alaïa. See Also: The 2nd Season of Gossip Girl (2008-2009) With the possible exception of Mean Girls, there hasn't come along a teen movie as smart or as witty as Clueless. But in terms of style, the second season of Gossip Girl rose to the challenge, making fashion icons of Blair Waldorf and Serena Vanderwoodsen, as well as their real-life counterparts, Leighton Meester and Blake Lively.

8. Blow-Up (1966) Michelangelo Antonioni captures the mod mood of 60s Swinging London as a hedonistic fashion photographer -- played by David Hemmings -- tries to figure out whether or not he accidentally snapped a murder. In the film's most famous scene, 6'1 supermodel Veruschka writhes around the set of a photoshoot as Hemmings makes love to her with his camera. See Also: La Dolce Vita (1960) If Blow-Up swings, La Dolce Vita sways. Federico Fellini's romantic portrait of Rome is as sleek and stylish as protagonist Marcello Rubini's suits.

9. The Devil Wears Prada (2006) It's a matter of public record that Lauren Weisberger's roman à clef was based on Anna Wintour -- who famously wore Prada to the film's opening -- but what the film accomplishes (okay, let's be real, what Meryl Streep accomplishes) is creating not only one of the greatest villains, but also one of the greatest fashion icons, in modern cinema. See Also: Sex and the City: The Movie (2008) A completely unnecessary production and by the loosest definitions an actual "movie," Sex and the City also benefited from Pat Field's brilliant styling. But unlike The Devil Wears Prada, there was no Oscar nomination for attiring Carrie and Co.

10.Zoolander (2001) Everything benefits from a parody -- rather, everything benefits from a good parody, Though Zoolander is far from perfect, it's a fun and funny romp through fashion's ridiculous playground; complete with walk-offs, an evil Galliano-esque designer in Jacobim Mugatu and the introduction of Blue Steel into the cultural lexicon. And lucky for us, there's a sequel in the works thus righting everything with the world. See Also: Brüno (2009) Taking off where Ben Stiller catwalked off, Sacha Baron Cohen's flamboyant character traipsed through America, spreading his questionably fashionable and gratuitously gay, booty-shorted self from sea to shining seaman.

Elbaz himself sits atop the tree, or rather an adorable facsimile. “The tree is to emanate and bring heartwarming joy to all who work and stay as guests at Claridge’s hotel,” the designer said. “It’s my way to wish them a very Merry Christmas.” This is Alber’s first time tackling tree trimming duty for the famous hotel —  John Galliano handled it for the past two years, but perhaps an alleged anti-Semite designing their Christmas tree wasn’t the right message Claridge’s wanted to send.

Whereas your tree will most likely be up well into March, the Lanvin tree will only be on display in the Claridge’s lobby until January 2. [Vogue UK]

Given to French businesses with highly specialized knowledge, the honor was bestowed on the 15 workers of the atelier, each with over a decade of experience in couture techniques. As for Galliano himself, he’s no doubt happy for his atelier and not at all bitter.

Working with The Creators Project, Chalayan and fashion show director Alex de Betak rigged champagne flutes with tiny, battery-powered, wireless cameras that activated when titled 15 degrees. The models received their champagne from a be-wigged Chalayan, disguised as a waiter to observe the action — then turned their attention to a blank wall behind the runway. Taking a sip, the cameras automatically lit up and projected onto the canvas an in-depth view of the models’ mouths and throats. Part performance art, part fashion show, Hussein Chalayan once again demonstrated his unique ability to utilize technology  in his vision for fashion’s future. For him, technology is “really the only thing through which you can do new things.” [The Creators Project]

The caveat that broke the camel’s back was Jacobs’ insistence on taking his Louis Vuitton team with him to Dior, leaving Vuitton — LVMH’s cash cow — without a heel to stand on. To make matters worse, Arnault had wanted Céline‘s Phoebe Philo to replace Marc at Vuitton should he move to Dior, but Philo is happy where she is — outfitting Kanye West in billowy blouses.

So with Jacobs more or less off the table, LVMH has reportedly approached Alexander Wang, Jason Wu and Jil Sander‘s Raf Simons; though out of the three Simons would seem the most likely choice, that is unless Dior plans on eschewing breathtaking gowns and impeccably-crafted ladysuits for sweatpants and cocktail dresses.

Then there is Givenchy‘s Riccardo Tisci, whose name has been bandied about since Gallianogate got into full swing. But he — along with Lanvin‘s Alber Elbaz, Alexander McQueen‘s Sarah Burton and Balenciaga‘s Nicolas Ghesquière – has turned down the Dior deal, citing brand loyalty.

So the question still remains — and frankly, the question is getting really tiresome — who will take the reins at Christian Dior? However, by the time someone is announced, the question might be, who the hell cares? [WWD]

“I could never do this anywhere else, do you know what I mean? Not just the Paris thing, but Vuitton, allows me,” Jacobs enthusiastically told the Daily Telegraph after the show. The Telegraph also reports that the negotiations between Jacobs and Dior may have hit the proverbial wall — again —  thanks to the designer’s insistence that his entire LV team come with him.

Meanwhile, the Financial Times‘ Vanessa Friedman seems to think that Christian Dior’s collaboration with German contemporary artist Anselm Reyle — the luxury house’s first — on a line of accessories is a sign that Jacobs is indeed on his way to Dior. “As it happens, the driving force behind the Dior/Reyle partnership was Delphine Arnault…deputy general manager of Dior Couture [who] is also reportedly one of the most vocal proponents of moving Mr Jacobs to Dior, an eventuality that is looking more and more likely.”

The Dior announcement is weeks away, according to Sidney Toledano and he wants us all to just hold our horses and show a little patience. But dammit it’s 2011, no one has an attention span longer than a gnat and patience is so last millennium. Just rehire John Galliano and stop boring me. [Daily Telegraph, Financial Times]

With a big focus on tailoring for Spring 2012, Riccardo Tisci designed one of the most wearable Givenchy collections to date. The makeup was very on par with this idea as nude eyes and a lightly glossed lip let the models' true beauty shine through. Tiny, shiny, heart-ish shaped bits placed directly beneath the lower lash lines reflected Tisci's mermaid inspiration for the line.

It was ring around the rosy at John Galliano with eyes smudged in a reddish-pink shadow and nude lips blushed ever so slightly. Whimsical, if not slightly freakish, the face matched the clothing designed by former pattern maker for the house Bill Gaytten. Mary Poppins would oblige.

The nude lip trend continued in Paris with Pat McGrath's fresh dewey face for Lanvin. The makeup artist is "feeling really pared-down makeup for Spring," a look designer Alber Elbaz was completely on board with for the show. Clean skin and a smokey brown eye rounded out the look, creating day-to-night beauty that's absolutely flawless.

Ah-ha! And a bold lip steps forward. Makeup artist Pat McGrath mixed three hues to create this perfectly matte, pinkish crimson pout, reminiscent of the late great Grace Kelly. Flawless skin with a rosy cheek was the backdrop for the look, and a pretty bronzed eye complemented without taking away or overpowering a simply beautiful face.

Christian Dior — alongside Pierre Balmain — worked for Parisian couturier Lucien Lelong during World War II and ensured that Nazi wives were the chicest anti-Semites of the Third Reich. Unlike Boss, who was an early co-signer to the Nazi party — Dior’s involvement was a move to preserve the tradition of Haute Couture, with Lelong being quoted as saying ”You can impose anything upon by force, but Paris couture cannot be uprooted, neither as a whole or in any part. Either it stays in Paris or it does not exist.”

Meanwhile, Dior’s sister, Catherine was a member of the French Resistance and was deported to the Buchenwald concentration camp, the memory of which was invoked at the fall 2011 Dior show by CEO Sidney Toledano as he addressed the audience following Galliano’s dismissal. Catherine was released in May of 1945 and two years later, Dior revolutionized womenswear with his acclaimed “New Look,” liberating women by giving them back their “sparkle and joyfulness,” to paraphrase Toledano.

One woman who was perhaps a little too liberated was Francoise Dior, Dior’s whackadoo neo-Nazi niece who openly professed her love for all things Kampf in a 1963 video that went viral during Gallianogate. In said video, Franny extolled the virtues of “defending the race” and keeping the bloodline “pure’; words she would put into action by attacking British synagogues and sticker-bombing Swastikas at the British Embassy in France.

Hands down my favorite spread so far in this, the September issue season, Klein, Valletta and Edward Enninful envision an eternal heroine and her struggles over the course of a century, featuring looks by Chanel, John Galliano, Miu Miu, Dolce & Gabbana, Prada, Gucci, Salvatore Ferragamo, Tom Ford, Givenchy and Alexander McQueen.

Natalie looks forever stunning in Diorskin, her complexion noticeably unmarred, unlike the reputation of the Gal from Gibraltar. While Portman said she would “not be associated with Mr. Galliano in any way,” now that he’s been unceremoniously kicked to the curb, her love affair with Christian Dior seems like it will continue uninterrupted. Speaking to W:  “I was only used to dressing models and skinny kids. And I turned up and it was, like, three fat guys. I just left. That was the last time I tried to work with fat people.” I once had the same reaction at a Dairy Queen. [Jezebel]

The changing of the guard at any house is bound to cause some ripples –  a loss of both footing and vision — and considering the immense talent Gaytten is following, it’s understandable he would want to assert his own voice into the Dior lexicon.

Gaytten’s voice was, however, lost in translation, producing one of the sloppiest and most incoherent couture shows I’ve seen in a while.

Granted, I’m observing, much like you, from my laptop thousands of miles away and thus the intricacies of the gowns are lost on me. Still, with haute couture, particularly with Dior Haute Couture,  there’s a brilliance that shines through in spite of the viewer’s distance or technical knowledge.

No doubt the pieces were brilliantly and painstakingly constructed by one of the most, if not the most, talented atelier in the world, but without Galliano’s influence there’s no clear identifying vision.

Instead, there are garish colors thrown together rather haphazardly with even more garish prints; an abundance of overworked and unfinished taffeta, gazar and organza that just ended up looking messy; and a jarring lack of cohesion that only hinted at the Dior aesthetic without fully realizing it.

If not for the big budget and even bigger name behind it all, this show could easily be mistaken for a graduate show from FIT or, even worse, a Project Runway finale collection.

Though the Christian Dior aesthetic was lost on its own couture show, it was certainly found by Giambattista Valli.

In his couture debut, Valli presented a beautiful collection heavy on the drama and on Old Hollywood, two Galliano trademarks that Valli managed to make his own. Hopefully Sidney Toledano and Bernard Arnault, the head honchos at Dior and parent company LVMH respectively, were paying attention.

Never a conventional lady (cocaine scandal anyone?), model (a 5’7″ super among the 90s Glamazons) or celebrity (she’s notorious for not giving interviews), one would expect Kate Moss to be an unconventional bride:

Alexander McQueen – Resort 2012

Kate’s dear departed friend would be an obvious choice, but not even Moss could compete with the Duchess of Cambridge’s gorgeous gown by Sarah Burton.

Vera Wang – Fall 2011

Vera would be an obvious choice, but Kate would wear the Wang in a non obvious way, like this almost Victorian number from Vera’s Fall ready-to-wear line.

Marc Jacobs – Resort 2012

This jumpsuit from buddy Marc’s Resort collection is too casual for a wedding, but I would nonetheless love Kate in a pant and a sky-high heel.

Louis Vuitton – Fall 2011

Or perhaps a look from Marc’s futuristic-by-way-of-Blade Runner BDSM Louis Vuitton show, which Kate naturally stole, would be more her speed.

Lanvin – Resort 2012

Short but sweet, this little flirty Lanvin dress would be a modern turn for the bride-to-be, or a chic possibility for her bridesmaids. God knows Naomi loves to show some gam.

Valentino – Resort 2012

Kate would look lovely in Valentino, especially when dropping it like it’s hot to musical guest, Snoop Dogg.

Stella McCartney – Resort 2012

BFF and definite wedding guest Stella McC is another frontrunner for Kate’s wedding gown. This look from her 2012 Resort collection is a little on the old maid side, but chop those sleeves off and either shorten or lengthen it and now we’re talking.

Chanel – Resort 2012

Kate’s good ole Uncle Karl would probably jump to dress his little girl in Chanel like the lady she really isn’t but we can all pretend that she is.

Versace – Resort 2012

Throw a 40-foot train on this Versace number and you’ve got yourself one sexy bride, not to mention an updated Stephanie Seymour à la “November Rain” thing going on.

Christian Dior – Resort 2012

The likelihood of Kate wearing Dior is slim to none, but this simple asymmetrical dress would be a classy and understated choice. But this is motherfucking Mosstock and thus neither the time nor place to be classy and understated.

Horyn, in her usual straight-shooter fashion, posits that Galliano’s very public unraveling could have been avoided had Bernard Arnault and Dior chief exectuive Sidney Toledano “sufficiently addressed” his problems:

“Nothing about this affair has ever felt right — not his abusive comments, not his self-destructive behavior, not the way he was dismissed….His personality and showmanship were definitely part of Dior’s success, and maybe there was a fear of meddling with it.”

Speaking on the condition of anonymity, an executive at LVMH told Horyn there had been “casual discussions” about Galliano returning to his eponymous label. Both this and another executive seemed to think that the media and public would accept the return and resurgence of John Galliano.

Horyn thinks, and I certainly agree, that John Galliano deserves a second chance, but what do you think, dear readers? Is it too late to save his once-brilliant career or does time — and rehab — heal all wounds? [NYT]
