BEHIND THE BEAUTY: John Galliano

At John Galliano’s fashion show the look Galliano was going for to me was…well you decide.
On of my favorite makeup artists, Pat McGrath teamed up with hairstylist Julien d’Ys creating a kaleidoscope of looks with inspiration taken from sources around the period of the 17th century including William Hogarth, James Gillray and Queen Elizabeth’s security guards.
McGrath used eyeliner in Night clubbing and Max Factor 2000 Calorie mascara.
d’Ys, added voluminous wigs in cotton-candy colors and sprayed others into multicolored spikes, which were plastered with Galliano-print paper.

Ad-dict: John Galliano F/W 08-09
John Galliano knows how to push the sex appeal button. And he does it to please both men and women. The F/W 08-09 Galliano jewelry ad campaign is deliciously provocative and shows the pieces in an attractive light. Dagger necklaces, large pendants and oversized rings, all with gold details, provide the nice contrast of heavy metal against supple skin. If the male model comes with any of the pieces, sign me up ASAP.

Henry Holland Nuditees
Henry Holland is trying for a new trademark T-shirt style: cartoons of Agyness Deyn, John Galliano, Donatella Versace, and Karl Lagerfeld. The twist? The designers are in the nude, with strategically placed flowers.
The tees are set to hit stores next year.

Yet Another ‘Au Revoir’
December. The month to sing “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year” and do some major Christmas damage. With the current economic state taking a toll on numerous boutiques throughout the New York area, Linda Dresner, the phenomenal Park Avenue boutique, will join the many folding businesses as they will close shop next month. December isn’t so wonderful anymore, now is it? It was Dresner who brought couture labels like Comme des Garcons, Chloe, Charles Anastase and John Galliano to the Upper East Side nearly 20 years back. The failing fashion industry was best summarized by Dresner herself:
“There’s too much of everything right now. Would I open a store in New York today? No. Retailing has to be reconsidered. It’s become a commodity that’s less creative. There’s too many stores selling the same kind of merchandise and it’s not as beautifully chosen. It’s ruined the enthusiasm for fashion.”
Basically, boutiques need to be unique in order to survive. If four shops on Bleecker, within a three block radius, carry the same Jill Sander coat, of course shops aren’t going to make any money! Customers could use an incentive every now and then too.
So long, Linda Dresner, we’re sad to see you go.
Thanks Fashionista!
Moments of Style: Charlize Theron
Charlize Theron looked gorgeous in Dior, standing next to the king of fashion (in my opinion) John Galliano, at the Christian Dior & Chinese Artists event in Beijing, China. Galliano and Charlize have a close relationship where he has designed numerous couture dresses for her, including this one. He also has cited Charlize as his muse.

This month’s issue of UK Vogue not only features that amazing Roald Dahl shoot, it also features an avant garde tribute by Nick Knight. Entitled ‘Unbelievable Fashion’ this editorial goes through the most mind blowing garments of the last years. Viktor & Rolf, Issey Miyake, Thierry Mugler, Galliano and Alexander McQueen are just a few of the names whose frocks make an appearance.

John Galliano’s Fall 2008 Collection Makes The Perfect Halloween Costume

Cause it’s a Thriller! Thriller Night!!!
One of my favorite zombie/apocalyptic collections in recent memory was John Galliano’s Fall 2008 Mens collection in which the boys came ready with a little brain on their brain. The full leather mask is one of the best pieces in this collection, it’s very Resident Evil meets Texas Chain Saw Massacre and makes the perfect Halloween costume for those who appreciate haute couture.
Who Is Fashion’s Next Character Actor?
Woke up this morning realizing how tired I am of Karl Lagerfeld, John Galliano and Anna Wintour.
They always seem to be playing over-acted versions of themselves. It was endearing at first, almost an expected outcome of the over-indulgent nature of fashion types, but I think that their time has come and is now quickly fleeting. Karl can’t eat a proper meal for fear of tipping the scales and reverting back to his fatty days and Winnie is quickly getting trumped by her children and Ann Slowley in the “ones to give a damn about” department. So here’s my short list of those I think might be the next favorite characters of fashion.
Add you’re own picks in the comments section and we’ll try to keep track.
Christian Siriano – His royal fierceness, if only anyone will pay attention. Runway is done, but wasn’t he the most interesting character the show has had since the days of that greasy Rasputin looking dude? I just hope he doesn’t become a cliche as quickly as he’s become relevant.
Tyra Banks - She was Sasha before Beyonce was Sasha and she continues to play young Oprah to a tee. Hopefully the model won’t lose any steam as she continues to fuel a generation of big bootied fashionistas. Plus, she’s donned a fat suit. What’s not to like?
Jeremy Scott - Former drugettes make for great fashion people. His celebrity connections help, but Jeremy is forming a strong posse of media friends and publicists which seem to keep this droopy eyed inmate in the spotlight. Hopefully a downward spiral is in his future, cause you know how we all enjoy a little tragedy with our couture.
Henry Holland - Starting to look like the male version of Agyness Deyn, but still a character to watch, his parties are getting as much attention as his collections and that’s what makes a mere fashion designer a future icon.
Olivier Zahm – Vincent Gallow’s Love Child/Editor of Purple Magazine takes the cake for people we would enjoy spending a Saturday night with and his recent relocation to New York will ensure he continues catching the glare of the paparazzi. Hopefully his legendary attitude won’t let us down.
Dov Charney - You know you loathe him, but that’s what makes him so much fun.
Andre J - No one can pull off a gown better than this towering Amazon. The beard screams “Look at Me Bitches” while the attitude yells “NOW PAY ATTENTION”. I can’t get enough.
Leigh Lezark – Party Gothic finally has a heroine. Plus she is quite literally the only good thing that came out of that Misshapes thing a few years back.
Terry Richardson – Lumberjack shirt + Full Frontal Nudity + Pocket Camera = Instant Icon.
Merlin Bronques (or whatever he’s calling himself these days) – THE ONLY NIGHTLIFE PHOTOGRAPHER WORTH PAYING ATTENTION TO … lately. He’s ditched the wig and now seems to be playing a hipster Clark Kent. His photos are still better wanking fodder than most of the porn on the web and he’s finally going mainstream!!! If you don’t know him, you better take note.

Probably my favorite collection for Spring 09, John Galliano outdid himself once again…The hair, the hats, the large accessories, and don’t forget the shoes, absolutely amazing!
Thanks Style and Fabulousness for the pics.

Street Hero: Sartorialist Captures Men in Skirts

Not sure if our society is ready for men is skirts? But these guys, may I say, don’t look so bad. Whether the men’s liberation movement has come, or the ways of the runway have brainwashed the fashion savvy, but it might not be too long before we see more of these.

Above John Galliano, Comme des Garçons, and Etro.
Check out this great article from NY Mag on this subject.
Fashion Quoteable: Marilyn Manson
“Well, I’m not saying I did this in Paris a couple of weeks ago, but taking a thousand dollars’ worth of hard drugs and putting it on the table in front of some of the world’s biggest fashion designers – I’m not saying who they might’ve been – and then having the waitress bring over straws.”
-Marilyn Manson telling Spin Magazine about his time in Paris.

Everyone loved the current John Galliano for Christian Dior collection, in fact, it’s one of our top posts. This video gives behind the scenes footage from the glamorous event, and takes us straight to the runway to experience the beauty of the garments in motion. My fave part: John Galliano strutting his stuff down the runway, and posing, at the end.
John Galliano Proves Why He’s The Best
The master of couture John Galliano kicked off Haute Couture Week in Paris with a breathtaking Christian Dior show. Although Galliano rarely disappoints, its has been awhile since he’s produced a show of such beauty. Galliano indulged in what he does best-taking the roots of Dior, the ‘New Look’ silhouettes, and putting a subversive edge to it. Here are the highlights thanks to Catwalking:
