The adorably handsome Ottavio “Tai” Missoni outshines all these silly young models running about the fashion world. The founder of Missoni turned 90 this year, and we can’t think of a better way to celebrate than to make him a star in the newest campaign. Aptly titled “A Wonderful Life,” these beautiful photos were shot by Juergen Teller against Alberoni Reserve at the Venice Lido. Models Kaitlin Aas, Valeria Kelava, Kinga and Kristina Salinovic joined Tai for his close-up.

Anna Wintour has been credited/blamed/lauded/criticized for the current proliferation of celebrity-driven magazine covers of the past 15 years or so. Love it or hate it, a model has a better chance winning a Pulitzer than landing a U.S. Vogue cover — with a few notable exceptions. While stars are rightfully and contractually beautiful, however, not all of them can cut the couture mustard. Then there are those ladies who love the camera and the camera is kind of obsessed with them. Here, the 10 actresses who give the best editorial — and give models a run for their money — are given the countdown treatment.

Two actresses, two very different campaigns. Eternal pixie and best-dressed candidate Helena Bonham Carter stars in Marc Jacobs Fall 2011 campaign, shot, per usual, by Juergen Teller. Meanwhile, Oscar winner and non-model Kate Winslet‘s Craig McDean-lensed ads for St. John have finally made an appearance.

Both Winslet and Bonham Carter are known for their red carpet style; whereas Kate skews more to the classic ideal of Hollywood glamour, Helena likes to pile on the crazy. And while St. John is trying to appeal to a younger customer, Marc continues to give less than two shits what anyone thinks.

Hence, Kate Winslet for St. John — classy, demure, grey jersey dress, acting — and Helena Bonham Carter for Marc Jacobs — legs splayed at an awkward angle, pink sequins and scallops, quirk. Matches made in fashion heaven.

Now if only the two actresses could switch places in their respective ads à la Freak Friday. That would be truly heavnly. [WWD, Daily Telegraph, Fashionologie]

No not what you’re thinking, at least not in this photo. It appears to be a bottle of Marc Jacobs‘ perfume “Oh Lola.” Could it be the young, lovely Dakota Fanning is the new face of his latest fragrance? Although not confirmed, it seems these ad photos shot by Juergen Teller are the answer. No stranger to the label, Fanning was the face of the Marc Jacobs Spring 2007 collection. What do you think of the photos?

The Gospel According to Sozzani

Vogue Italia‘s Editor-in-Chief, Franca Sozzani took to her blog today to vent her frustrations, some of them indirectly lobbed at Carine Roitfeld. Among her grievances: “trashy” nudity, sexualizing children, nudifying old people and pretending “what’s ugly is avant-garde.” She went on to say, “You know, I’m kind of over fashion.”

In her broken English — or badly translated Italian — Sozzani extols the virtues of Yves Saint Laurent‘s nakedness, Stephanie Seymour‘s snatch, and the artistic nudes of Helmut Newton and Richard Avedon.

They knew how to be naked back then!

She then goes on to call Terry Richardson and Juergen Teller trashy and blame them for transforming nudes into “something sexy and crude rather than glossy.” Whatever “glossy” is supposed to mean.

The editrix then goes on to attack the Tom Ford-helmed issue of Vogue Paris, featuring a wide range of exploitation:

“How about little girls? Wearing heavy make up, sexy clothes, posing in poses that are outrageous for their age.”

Sozzani seems to think that the pinnacle of child exploitation was in the 80s Brooke Shields pedo-fest, Pretty Baby, as “the images were actually romantic for the harsh reality [baby prostitution] portrayed in them.”

And as for those naked elderly people, she’d prefer they keep their wrinkly birthday suits covered up, thank you very much.

Franca Sozzani’s point in all of this is that the images being presented should say something and not just shock for the hell of it. I love a nude male model as much as the next lady, often much much more, but when does it go from being art or fashion and just becomes porn?

Answer: point of insertion.

But beyond that, if a collection just isn’t good, there’s no point in calling it avant-garde. That’s an easy cop-out. If an article of clothing defies categorization or tradition, sure, call it avant-garde. But feel free to listen to Franca when in doubt:

“If what’s beautiful depends on your opinion, what’s ugly just repulses you.”

Balenciaga‘s Spring/Summer 2011 campaign stars the world’s foremost supermodel Gisele Bundchen-Brady giving very masculine attitude, shot by Steven Meisel.

Yuri Plesken joins in on the action adorned by Pat McGrath‘s dramatic face paint…and little else. How do we feel about this? And is it me or does the image on the right look a bit Marc Jacobs/Juergen Teller-y?

Still I love to see Gisele as Tom Brady sees her: wearing the pants.

The above is evidence which substantiates that claim. Not only has this site been recognized as the single most powerful concentrated resource for models street style on the internet, but over time, that reach and influence will just grow more and more powerful.

10 ‘fashion gods’ were each captured by the photographer of their choice for the tenth anniversary of 10 Magazine. Helmut Lang sent in a passport photo, Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana by Terry Richardson, Vivienne Westwood by Juergen Teller, Ralph Lauren by Bruce Weber, and Karl Lagerfeld submitted a self-portrait. Alber Elbaz, Azzedine Alaia, Donatella Versace, John Galliano, and Tom Ford are the others.

Missoni Keeps It All in the Family

I’m head over heels in love with this new campaign from La Casa de Missoni. Shot by Juergen Teller, it really gets down to the roots of a family that is the core of Missoni in many ways.

Teller was invited over for dinner at founders Rosita and Tai Missoni’s home and shot over 40 images (he was only commissioned for of the clan including designer Angela Missoni.

“I wanted to highlight our reality and our lifestyle, which is reflected in our unique product and in the artisanal aspect,” said Angela Missoni. “This campaign really reflects the mood I’m in these days, even from a design stance.”

THE TEN: Things You Didn’t Know About Juergen Teller

1. Has been shooting Marc Jacobs’ advertisments for eleven years, and did not get paid in the beginning.

2. Uses a 35mm camera and refuses to go digital.

3. Does most of his shoots by himself and with his one assistant.

4. Dakota Fanning’s whole family was on set for her Marc Jacobs’ ads, and Dakota sent him a few handwritten letters afterwards saying thanks and recommending books.

5. The legendary Victoria Beckham in a shopping bag ad campaign for MJ only happened because of a personal call Teller put in to Ms. Beckham. Beckham’s lawyers wanted to review all the photos before the ads ran, and Teller refused, so he called Victoria directly instead and the rest is fashion history.

6. Took pictures inside caves near his mother’s house because the rock formations looked like “great dicks.”

7. His wife shoots all the family pictures because he cannot just take a snapshot.

8. Did a wonderful spread in Purple magazine called Ed in Tokyo featuring his then 11-month-old son, Ed, and the snowy backdrop of Tokyo.

9. Has friends and neighbors operate the camera for his self portraits, but is so familiar with his camera that he can tell them exactly at what angle to hold the camera to get the image he desires.

10. Gets creeped out when you offer to fly to London to babysit his children for him, not that I offered or anything…

I would never do some sort of stupid picture where everything is dark and you can’t see the fabric or whatever, or crop something badly so you don’t get the right impression of a garment. I did have my problems with fashion before, maybe. As a heterosexual man, I was always a bit embarrassed of being a fashion photographer and didn’t have the confidence to describe myself that way. Is “White Trash Chic” the latest craze or is it just plain crazy?

With the renewed vows of Heidi Klum and Seal on our minds (the two had a trashtastic ceremony, that’s Seal in a mullet and Heidi with cornrows above), we were starting to wonder if trailer park is the newest fashion trend. Pipeline answered our questions with a feature on the latest white trash inspired collections and photo shoots which have hit the glossies and runways recently. From A.Wang to Westwood, Marie Claire to Julia Restoin-Roitfel, it seems that the new money is down for looking like they ain’t got none.

Juergen Teller shot Raquel Zimmermann for the Marc Jacobs S/S 2009 ad campaign.

It’s definitely different from what we’ve seen the past couple seasons, and definitely aware of the season.

First of all. Raquel is practically unrecognizable from this angle. And there’s nothing “shocking” about the image. It’s a sort of “Alice in Wonderland” weirdness, but beautiful at the same time.

Purple Magazine begins it’s stateside take over with a party tonight to celebrate the launch of Purple Anthology, the new pub from Rizzoli celebrating 15 years of Purple Mag.

The arty farty event will feature works from Terry Richardson, Richard Kern, Jack Pierson, Juergen Teller, and Richard Prince.

Tonights the launch fiesta for the event so if you want to seem like you matter for a few hours, be there.
