INDIE REWIND: 10 Trends Americans Have Run into the Ground

When it comes to fashion, America has a checkered history of following trends. Sure, there have been the good — the Brit-Mod 60s, the wrap-dress 70s, the coke-bag 80s — but for every Mondrian shift there’s a Juicy Couture tracksuit. Whether imported or homegrown, these trends have created a blight on American fashion. By pointing them out FashionIndie hopes to do our patriotic duty to right the sartorial wrongs of our fore-mothers and fathers and build a better, fiercer future for the children. WON’T SOMEONE THINK OF THE CHILDREN?!

Cargo Shorts Useful. Yes. Practical. Sure. Awful. You betcha. Give me a utilitarian article of clothing anyday of the week, but there's a time and a place for a multi-pocketed cargo short. And that time is called hiking outdoors or robbing a 7-Eleven.

Crocs You know who looks cute in Crocs? Toddlers. But then again, toddlers can pull off anything -- jumpers, cuddly animals...Harajuku girl. Anyone who can drink without the use of a sippy cup, however, should put on a real shoe.

Ed Hardy Anything I've always been a fan of a statement outfit, but some statements just don't need to be made. Especially since it's so hard to ignore whatever an Ed Hardy article is saying since it's so loud and obnoxious.

The online retailer has added a new feature that allows you to see what’s being bought from their site and where in the world the purchase originates, all in real time. Unsurprisingly, there’s a lot of Juicy Couture devotees in New Jersey and nary a bathing suit in the Middle East.

Dubbed World View, at any given time you’ll be privy to the purchases of Net-a-Porter’s thousands of e-shoppers because, you know, you have nothing else to do.

Exclusive Interview: Amy Levin Talks Collegefashionista Street Style

Behind the thrills of all the clothes and reviews, there are also all the Wintours, and Karlfelds with all the spunk and magic that make it all happen. And in today’s tech savvy generation, there is no excuse for any trendy girl to not follow the bible blogs of street style religiously, some more than others, and the first one on that list is Collegefashionista.com. That is why FashionIndie has the wicked exclusive into the mind of Amy Levin, Collegefashionista’s very own founder.

1. How did the idea strike you to start Collegefashionista?

It started as a personal blog that I was using to enhance my resume and establish my voice in the industry then turned into an actual company and full-time job.

2. What does your day as the creative director/ founder of Collegefashionista.com consist of?

A great part of my job is that there is no typical day as an entrepreneur! One day I will be working with our social media team on a new Facebook app and the next day I will be around town shooting a video series with influential leaders in the industry. It truly changes day-to-day and that’s what leaves my job extremely thrilling. One thing that is consistent on a regular basis is connecting with my Style Guru team and making sure all 200 plus members are on the right page. I have a very intimate relationship with my writers and they are always my top priority each day. And, of course, there is also loads of editing, writing features, photographing subjects for my column, connecting with our readers through Twitter/Facebook/Tumblr and meetings with brands and other partners thrown in there as well. CollegeFashionista is a 24/7 job and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

3. What is your most favorite part about being the Editor of such a well known street style site?

The impact I have on my Style Gurus is the most rewarding and my favorite part of my job as editor. I love interacting with my team and seeing the effect my Web site has on them. They’re enthusiasm and dedication to the site is invigorating.

4. Did you always want to work in fashion?

While I always knew I wanted to work in fashion, I was never quite sure what aspect of the industry I necessarily gravitated to. CollegeFashionista has been that niche I had been looking for. It combines so many aspects of the fashion industry, which, for me, makes it the perfect, perfect job. You can’t plan what you think you will do because chances are that isn’t where you will end up!

5. What was your first job in the fashion industry?

My first internship was for a PR firm in London during my Junior year in college. I have never worked full-time for anyone other then myself since I started CollegeFashionista right after I graduated in 2009. Pretty luck girl

6. What makes a good intern?

Someone who is driven, self-motivated and can figure things out for themselves. I know as an intern how stressed out my supervisors were. They needed me as the intern to create my own projects and didn’t have time to hold my hand. A successful intern is one who can navigate the office and figure out what needs to be done without being asked.

7. What is the best advice you can give to an aspiring fashion editor?

Be nice. I can’t begin to tell you how often that is overlooked and how far that will get you. There is very real stereotype that people in the fashion industry have a hard edge. But I firmly believe it’s those who are kind that rise to the top. We all need other to succeed. Don’t forget that!

Equally important is networking. Develop relationships with people in the fashion industry, people in other industries and everyone you meet in general. You never know who that person may know that could help you get your big break.

8. What is your favorite fashion statement piece?

A white silk blouse. I think I own 10 plus white silk blouses and never get sick of them. They are my go-to piece. My sister calls the look my uniform.

9. Who do you consider your fashion Muse to be?

Iris Apfel- she’s such a cool, elegant lady. And the Olsens. I mean, you can’t get much better than that.

10. What are some of the brands that you have worked with

Juicy Couture, Bop, Ray-Ban are a few.

11. Who are your top 3 favorite designers?

Alexander Wang, Jenni Kayne, The Row.
12. What is your perfect summer outfit?

A sheer maxi skirt, loose white T-shirt, strappy sandals, my go-to Dries Van Noten sunnies, and a Chanel bag.
13. What blogs do you read the most?

Ah there are so many!! I always read TheCoveteur, WhoWhatWear, JakandJil, The Selby and, of course, CollegeFashionista. I usually read loads more but those on a regular basis.

14. Who are your favorite “tweeps” to follow on twitter?

@DKNY and @OscarPRGirl both crack me up and I love following our Style Guru team and seeing what they are up to!

15. Where do you see Collegefashionista 5 years from now?

CollegeFashionista has gone from a personal blog to a website and now a brand. Out of all the aspects of CollegeFashionista my favorite part is empowering young women and helping them shape their careers, which a lot have through writing for the website. I want to continue to hone in on this mentorship type relationship and really develop that aspect out. I hope CollegeFashionista can continue to be that outlet for more and more young adults with a passion for writing and fashion.

Memorial Day in the City: What to Do if You’re Stuck Here?

If you’re like me (who is moving this week and has TONS of packing left to do) and are stuck in New York City for Memorial Day, how can you get a piece of the summer sun while roaming this urban jungle? Coming Signs of the Apocalypse: Snooki Wants to Be a Designer

The reason for the continued downfall of Western civilization, and also my favorite thing to come out of upstate New York since the Buffalo wing, Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi wants to be a “clothing designer, hair designer.”

A few things:

A. Isn’t a hair designer called something else? Like a hairstylist or a hairdresser?

B. Doesn’t Snooki already have a clothing line, called “Armani Exchange” and/or “Juicy Couture“?

And C. When and where can I buy what will no doubt be the cheapest and tackiest shit to hit the runway since…Armani Exchange and/or Juicy Couture?

Snooki has her mind on the future, y’all! At least we know where her alleged mind is, for once. But what could have brought about this change in our little girl?

Has it finally dawned on the partygirl’s partygirl that her fifteen minutes are going into severe overtime? Whatever it is, Snooki’s got the eye of the tiger. Outside of her sartorial ambitions, she plans on getting “married by 26, 27″ and having “like, you know, four guido/guidette babies.”

That is, of course after she finds her one, true gorilla juicehead Prince Charming. Best of luck, Snickers! You’ve had more than your share already, but honestly (Ronny), I love a happy ending. I hope one day Snooki’s prince will come, slip on a glass bunny slipper and knock her up with his guido seed.

Oh the beautiful dresses…they’ve become my favorite fashion piece! From the ultra feminine and colorful to the embellished and delicately detailed, I’m sold! Those designed by Victoria Beckham are among the fabulous. It appears that she’s extending her design range to include intricately detailed gowns and adding a fresh look to her form fitting dresses….a mix which appears to be working well, as all of the dresses featured here are sold out. Rachel Gilbert’s stunning gowns are fantasy-like lovelies that I’m sure we’ll see adorn the bodies of celebrities and the “fashion elite” during the upcoming season. I’m totally taken with the ruffled gown….oh how I would love to “sweep” into a room wearing that one! Another favorite is Marc Jacobs’ sequined gown….how lovely! Feminine and sexy with a hint of vintage….talk about your entrance maker! I must always add Vivienne Westwood….the “fashion veteran’s” pieces are timeless statement pieces at their best. On the “casual front,” Emilio Pucci’s embellished eagle top and Juicy couture’s military jacket are two great pieces that would look great together. Oh the beauty of it all!

The couture shows are happening in Paris right now and I am massively jealous that I’m not in attendance. Couture is an interesting thing and the word itself seems to get tossed around a lot. Couture is actually short for haute couture, a French phrase that translates to “high dressmaking.” In order to be considered couture under French law, a garment must be produced by one of the members of the Chambre de commerce et d’Industrie de Paris, and the garment must be fitted to a specific client, with at least two personal fittings to ensure the garment looks correct. Furthermore, the firm itself must maintain a workshop in Paris with French staff, and present a collection during both annual fashion weeks. So in other words, Juicy Couture and Trashy Couture are NOT couture. Sorry JWOWW.

You want to see REAL couture? Riccardo Tisci’s Fall 2010 Couture Collection for Givenchy is stunning. I mean, words cannot express how enamored I am with every look. The collection was shown in an intimate presentation this week and was created with the human skeleton in mind. He describes it as “a romantic way to see death.” I hope everyone experiences a death this gorgeous.

The dresses are extraordinarily detailed with pearls and crystals, lace and feathers, and tiny ceramic skulls. Amazing.

Ask a Stylist: How to Wear Headbands

From Gossip Girl to Bonnaroo’s fashionable festival-goers, headbands are having a moment. Though the accessory seems intimidating (I wear my hair down and unadorned every day), irresistible versions by Deepa Gurnani, Juicy Couture, and Eugenia Kim have me determined to try the look. So I asked Shopbop stylist Amanda for a couple tips.

Tonya: I haven’t worn a headband since high school. How can I style one so it doesn’t look too cutesy?
Amanda: To add sophistication to your look, start by putting your hair in a high or low bun. Next, mess your hair up a bit–cruise with your window down or stand in front of a fan–whatever you have to do so it’s not too perfect looking! Final step, put your headband on! You’ll be sure to achieve a chic, but never elementary, look.

T: Wearing a headband around the front of the head, hippie-style, seems to be a staple of music festival fashion this summer. How can you pull them off outside of Coachella?
A: It’s easy to achieve the music festival look, even in the city. Adding a headband will add a breath of au natural, bohemian embellishment to your look, without trying too hard. Simply find a headband style you love and toss it on last thing before stepping out (hair up or down!). Whether to the office or dining a deux, it’ll be the perfect juxtaposition–exactly what you find at the festivals.

MOVIES WITH STYLE: (500) Days of Summer

In a city where woman are often portrayed as wearing giant sunglasses, Juicy Couture tracksuits, and carrying around tiny dogs, Summer’s look really stands out and shows a different style that can be found on the streets of LA. Her look could be described as modern-retro—and has a wardrobe mixed with new and vintage pieces. Zooey Deschanel’s character is always seen wearing something blue, which costumer Hope Hanafin says was inspired by the color of Zooey’s eyes.

This was done purposefully, as to make her character stand out to the audience, since nobody else is seen in that color. This color trait is also something that Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s character Tom associates with Summer, when you see that everyone is wearing blue in the dance sequence the night after Summer and Tom hook-up.

I absolutely loved the costumes throughout the film—especially how adorable Tom looked in his sweater vests, skinny ties, suits, and graphic tees. Style definitely played a big role in the movie and storyline. It even added charm to Summer’s unlikable qualities, which allows you to understand why Tom could be infatuated with her, even though she’s not everything he thinks she is.

Expanding on Juicy’s loungewear empire that started with tracksuits, the Juicy Couture Intimate Apparel collection is basic sleepwear and underwear. Really basic. Like, boring-basic. The line is full of nightgowns, screened tees and camisoles, pajama pants, undies, and robes, in springy, girly colors.

The line is surprisingly innocuous and a lazy attempt at ripping off the Victoria Secret’s Pink brand. Gotta get those teenage buyers!

Wear Lauren Conrad? Sorry, I’d Rather Be Hazed.

A few weeks ago I reported in Desperation 101 that Lauren Conrad would be on a national tour to market her clothing line. As expected, it was the the sorority girls flaunting their Ugg boots, North Face jackets, straightened blonde hair, black leggings, Juicy Couture sweatsuits and gem encrusted Bebe tees that ransacked the audience. Apparently the campaign went over well, but it went over well with a crowd that doesn’t know fashion from the other 20 girls sporting their beer stained Sigma Gamma Lambda Kappa Delta Pi Epsilon sweatshirts with dried vomit in their hair.

Some girl from Northeastern University said ”Wearing her clothing line tonight was really an honor.” Well, apparently this girl was flattered that she was one of the many cotton dress wearing, cheap black belted, frontal hair poofed models. Good job Conrad, you gave daddy’s little girl 5 minutes of fame other than when she gets voted make-out slut at Saturday night frat parties.

Another spectator at the show said ”A cotton dress for $200 is overpriced, just because of the name that’s on it? Come on. But, I mean, I would totally buy it, just because it’s a Lauren Conrad dress, I totally would.” Excellent, another label whore. Totally kill yourself. Totally.

Art director Yeva Babayan created a brilliant set of illustrated ads for Juicy Couture Women, Children and Men. In the ads, Babayan combines famous historic and cultural icons with their infamous quotes in a playful and visually pleasing direction.

American presidents and characters from Alice in Wonderland also make an appearance with witty quotes such as, “Go couture yourself,” “I dream of Juicy,” and “Couture sets you free.

I’m Over It: The “Cool” Mom

Let’s face it, there is nothing cool about moms that wear pink velour Juicy Couture sweatsuits, flaunt their belly-button piercings, show off their cleavage to their kid’s friends, smell like a baby prostitute or wear Rock and Republic jeans. Really, anyone over the age of 40 that goes out looking like they are about to hit up a high school dance should be given a reality check. Yes, you are old. No, you shouldn’t be wearing your 14-year-old daughter’s clothes. Yes, you turn heads…but not in a good way. No, you are not cool.

If there is one thing I really applaud, it is a woman who embraces her age and dresses for it. Dressing like a “mom” doesn’t mean you lose fashion and sex appeal. My mom looks killer in her Ralph Lauren blazers, Brooks Brothers sweaters and Calvin Klein jeans…and seeing that she has been married to my dad for 31 years means she must be looking good!

Take my advice. If your mom has nicer clothes than you do, gets her nails done more frequently, dyes her hair obsessively and compliments your friend on her “stellar” heels, I recommend you ditch her while she’s shopping at Guess and head for higher ground. In the meantime, I’ll be hitting up 5th Ave with my cool mom.
