Entitled “Visions Couture,” the display will feature these Daphne avatars in looks from Paco Rabane, Gareth Pugh, Maison Martin Margiela, Rick Owens and Junya Watanabe — in other words, a fierce fashionable feast for the eyes. ”Visions” will also include short films by Knight about each outfit and an interactive display by multimedia artist Danny Brown, utilizing images submitted by the public and passersby. If you’re not familiar with his designs, know that Billy’s Southern roots run deep. Born in Florence, Alabama, the famed designer sprinkles a little of the south in each of his pieces. Yet his style has translated unbelievably well into Northeastern markets.

I chatted with Billy at Ann Taylor’s new store opening recently in Flatiron. Impeccably styled and always easygoing, here’s what the designer had to say.

So the big news is the CFDA award. Have you seen any effects so far, has it changed business for you guys in any way?

We have seen certainly more awareness around the business. It’s been a really nice boost, even from the beginning. It really helped quite a bit. Things are very busy in a good way.

We’ve seen your clothes and your collections, but what would you say are the Billy Reid commandments of style?

For us, it’s kind of two worlds coming together. I’m from the south; I grew up in Florence, Alabama. Yet we work out of New York. We manufacture a lot in New York City. And I’ve shared those two worlds for the last 12 years basically.

How do you think the Southern Billy Reid aesthetic meshes here in the North?

The two worlds are really coming together where the clothes can function well in both places. It starts from a very classic look, a lot of our things are timeless.

We always use the word ‘heirloom,’ something you pass down and clothes that last not only in durability. Things are made that way [in the South] and really have a life to them. Each piece really has a living, breathing soul to it. It sounds kind of corny maybe, but that’s what we really try to do.

Whether you’re wearing a jacket at your duck camp in Mississippi or you’re walking in the East Village, it translates well in both places. And that’s what we try to do.

Who are a couple designers you think are super relevant right now? Making waves and doing cool things?

Man, there’s so many. Junya Watanabe.

I think Loden Dager is doing some great things.

Those are maybe a little lesser known folks, but I like what they’re doing a lot.

I know things are heating up and getting extremely busy for you right now. What do you do when you get a second to yourself?

I hunker down this time of year in front of the fireplace and try to light things on fire. A lot of football and a lot of cushy chairs.

We do get a little break for the holidays. We usually shut it down and just stay home this time of year.

After an all-star punk festival fell apart, the bands involved found themselves with some spare scratch and a landscape ripe for shootouts and standoffs.  The plot revolves around three hitmen/bank robbers who happen upon a small town populated by wild and wacky weirdos who they have to commingle with while they wait for the heat to die down.  Things, of course, go awry.  Honestly the plot is secondary though to the rollicking nature of the film, the setpieces, and total absurdity.

The film’s cast reads like a who’s who of the era’s punk and new wave scene.  There’s Joe Strummer, The Pogues, The Circle Jerks, Grace Jones, Elvis Costello, and even soon-to-be indie film god Jim Jarmusch.  And as an extra added bonus they’re all playing dress up.  Oh and Courtney Love‘s there too.

And she’s dressed well, which shouldn’t be much of a surprise if you follow her new Tumblr.  Pink dress with white polka dots not unlike this offering from Leifsdottir.  She might want to close those legs though.  But the matching watermelon‘s a nice touch.

Concerning the guys, check out Dick Rude‘s pants.  They’re very reminiscent of pairs shown off by Vivienne Westwood on a regular basis, which only seems fitting considering her place as the godmother of punk fashion.  Joe Strummer’s got on a ho-hum slim black suit but such a suit is almost always a recipe for looking good.

The gorgeous Jennifer Balgobin is, throughout the movie, basically a walking ad for American Apparel.  Look at the top picture for an example.  Spandex top?  Check.  High waisted bottoms?  Check.  That’s not to say she doesn’t class it up a little, though.  A simple, strapless blue dress which looks perfect for the weather…and also strikingly like this Jason Wu.

It’s almost frightening how much the women’s wardrobe in this movie matches up with pieces you’d find in today’s boutiques trending towards the younger gal.  Despite the film’s being over two decades old, the dress pictured above is here, here, and here.  And the boyfriend shirt?  Too many links to think about.

Similarly, this little white number on Michele Winstanley (I think) who, throughout the film, makes you wonder if Karen O got her whole schtick from this one character.  But back to the dress.  Ta-da!  And while the mariachi dressed men behind her probably aren’t exactly in style, they still look pretty awesome.

But before you think there’s only things for the ladies, say hello to Jeeves/Whitey and his killer pink summer suit.  Once again, very similar to something Westwood-ian, it also brings to mind pieces from Junya Watanabe and Filippa K.

The best ensemble in the entire movie, though, is definitely what Jim Jarmusch has got on.  It’s as if the director of such weirdo movies as Mystery Train, Dead Man, and Night On Earth decided to go as Karl Lagerfeld for Halloween.  And it is awesome.

Be warned: Straight to Hell is by no means a cinematic masterpiece, nor will it be in most people’s eyes ‘competent filmmaking’, what with a 5.5 rating on IMDB.  But if you go in with the right attitude, it’s as fun as Robocop and as splendorous as any period piece without being dry and/or expected.  Do yourself a favor and watch it.  (HINT: It’s on YouTube for free).

The second my pants become too short on my legs, they wind up on the racks of a Salvation Army or Goodwill. But if the Fall 2010 menswear collections in Paris and Milan taught me anything, it’s that flood water pants are going to be huge this fall. Designers and labels like Dior Homme, Junya Watanabe and Rick Owens showed a variety of short, flood-water pants and slacks in their Fall 2010 collections.

But you’ve got to be careful with this one otherwise you’ll end up looking like you’re too poor for new pants! Rock the floody pants with a pair of nice patterned or solid socks and oxfords or boots. Lots of layers and accessories will make the floody pants look trendy and intentional instead of dorky and accidental.

No normally when it comes to any form of fashion week, whether is be New York, Paris, Milan, etc., we obviously tend to get the biggest name collections out to you because people always want to see what they are going to be showing. This year however, one of the best collections was from a designer that many of you may not know of. Junya Watanabe had an absolutely amazing collection prepared for everyone who took the time to head over and see the show. The collection was new, different, and featured some eye-catching looks that were 100% practical at the same time. I loved all the looks, and I am so glad to see a designer like Watanabe get all this coverage for a collection that truly deserves it.
