During his stint as global editor for Metro Paris on Monday, the Kaiser did what the Kaiser does best: not give a fuck. In a tirade on pop culture phenom person Lana del Rey, Lagerfeld happened to drop this tidbit: “The thing at the moment is Adele. She is a little too fat, but she has a beautiful face and a divine voice.” And the backlash was akin to…well, Lana del Rey.

But Uncle Karl didn’t mean it like that. Employing the age-old PR trick of claiming his comments were “taken out of context,” Herr Lagerferld apologized…”apologized”:

“I’d like to say to Adele that ‘I am your biggest admirer. Sometimes when you take a sentence out of the article it changes the meaning of the thought. What I said was in relation to Lana Del Rey and the sentence has since been taken out of context from how it was originally published. I actually prefer Adele, she is my favourite singer and I am a great admirer of her. I lost over 30 kilos over 10 years ago and have kept it off. I know how it feels when the press is mean to you with regards to your appearance. Adele is a beautiful girl. She is the best. And I can’t wait for her next CD.”

Even taken out of context, he’s still calling Adele “too fat” — but let’s not get into it. The point is — this the closest thing anyone will ever get to an apology from Karl Lagerfeld. Bringing up his past as a big girl himself? And then offering a plug for her nonexistent third album? It’s like Dracula walking in the daytime…without his glasses on to boot. I hear you’ve been in the works with this Macy’s project for over a year. When you started, did you know that Karl Lagerfeld had signed on, and the great roster of talent they were gathering?

I knew that Karl was involved. I have to be honest, he was a big motivator for me. I’ve always been a fan of Giambattista Valli, and Karl Lagerfeld is like God.

Which of your strongest aesthetics did you apply to designing this collection?

Definitely the element of jersey. I’m known for this elegant ease and I think that’s what I wanted to convey. It’s not the same jersey we use for the collection, but it’s a beautiful modal and I think it’s so modern. It’s great that they’re able to make it accessible for so many people.

What are you most excited about for your show this Fashion Week?

I love the process. During fashion week, there’s a rhythm to it. Everything feels great, and then you feel the emotion that comes with it; the momentum picks up. You work with all these creative minds and it’s so great to see it all come together. We have a rack for the clothes with about five pieces on there. And it’s amazing how fast things happen as you get closer to the day. Before you know it, it’s 3 days before styling and that rack just fills up, 10 more pieces, 20 more pieces, 30 more pieces! I don’t know how it happens! But it just does. And then things get faster. We’re working there 24/7 and it feels like 2 hours have gone by. It’s Fashion Law. Something happens where time gets sped up, but everything speeds up, the amount of clothes that are produced, the energy level, the creativity and I love that rhythm.

It’s probably a sick hipster inside joke (answers the jaded 20-something that I really am). Considering we found it on a site called PoorlyDress.Failblog.org, and it cropped up on other tumblr, Tastefully Offensive, we’re thinking these aren’t in full scale production… yet.

Do these have a chance at salability? At wearability? Will more hipsters be on that train to earwarmingtown? Will junior highers adopt the lobe-cap as the next Tamagachi? Will high school kids soak them in vodka and let the booze soak in through their ears? Where will the ear beanie go from here??

But seriously, if Karl Lagerfeld did a diffusion line of them, would you wear it?

Saskia de Brauw models a skinny black pant, silver blouse and sleeveless leather motorcycle jacket — and while I’m not floored, it’s certainly signature Lagerfeld. There are even fingerless gloves and a detachable shirt collar that reads: “I only wear the latest thing, it’s my job.”

The entire collection will debut during Paris Haute Couture Fashion Week on January 25 and will be available at Net-a-porter.com and karllagerfeld.com. Sorrenti is actually the first Italian to photograph the Pirelli Calendar, whose past lensmen have included Herb Ritts (1994, 1999), Richard Avedon (1995, 1997), Bruce Weber (1998, 2003), Annie Leibovitz (2000), Mario Testino (2001), Peter Lindbergh (1996, 2002), Patrick Demarchelier (2005, 2008), Mert and Marcus (2006), Inez and Vinoodh (2007), Terry Richardson (2010) and last year, Karl Lagerfeld.

For the shoot in Corsica, Sorrenti chose mostly women with whom he had previously worked, including supermodel among supermodels Kate Moss, whom the photographer has known for some 20 years — the two worked together on the iconic Calvin Klein “Obsession” campaign when Sorrenti was just 21 and Moss was practically still in diapers. In the “Making of ” short film that preceded a Q&A with Sorrenti, he remarked that he “couldn’t do this without her.”

Lagerfeld will provide illustrations and commentary for the special issue, which kicks off the daily’s coverage of New York, London, Milan and Paris Fashion Week. “I love daily papers and it’s fun to be part of one of them just for the day. Pick and choose whatever colors you like — well not really since you have access to a rather limited color palette that Karl Lagerfeld himself would openly balk at — to design Chanel accessories, such as the iconic bouclé tweed jacket, a pump, a hair-bow, and a clutch. Then there’s a little memory game — you know the kind where you flip over the cards and try to match up the images.

In a piece of art that imitates life, Karl Lagerfeld is standing in a world in which gold rains down upon him.

Translation:”My biggest luxury is to not have to justify myself to anyone.”

The deluxe 5×7  edition runs a cool $1500 but if you don’t feel like breaking the bank, the standard edition — at 3 ft x 5 ft — is only a measly $375. The historic issue features work from Bruce Weber, the Stevens (Klein and Meisel), Mario Sorrenti, Karl Lagerfeld and a cadre of other artists and photographers given, as Visionaire puts it, “the forum to take their visions to a massive scale.”

So who wants to go halfsies on the deluxe edition? The standard edition is nice and all, but since the theme of the issue is “Larger than Life,” you might as well go big or go home. [Visionaire]

Gone, however, is a cat-whiskered Freja Beha Erichsen jammed into a photo booth. For spring, it’s “all about athletics and the sea.…It’s very modern sportif and in black-and-white,” quote the Lagerfeld. Uncle Karl shot Roitfeld fave Saskia de Brauw and Naomi winner Joan Smalls over the weekend at the Hôtel du Cap-Eden-Roc in Antibes, France, but there’s no rest for the wicked — which would explain why he (almost) never takes off his glasses…giant bags and I’m not talking monogrammed — as the Kaiser then zipped off to Rome to photograph Arizona Muse for Fendi‘s fall campaign. The collection will feature 100 pieces, ranging from $95 to $450, debuting via Net-a-Porter and coming to karllagerfeld.com February 28th. Karl pop-up shops are being planned in several major cities, with at least one in Paris, and a select 20 “high-visibility” retailers will also carry the line. The company will expand into menswear for the fall 2012 season.

While the Karl line is meant to appeal to the younger generation, Karl Lagerfeld Paris, a more upscale collection, will be targeted at retailers in Europe, the Middle East, Russia, Asia and “key fashion cities” of North America — sorry L.A. — with prices starting where Karl left off, $411 to $3,425.

These initiatives are meant to turn the Lagerfeld celebrity into a global brand that exists independently of the Chanel and Fendi houses. That, thankfully, does not mean an end to the king of collaborations crown. So you can still get your Macy’s T-shirts, your overpriced glassware and god knows what else the Kaiser plasters his name to, but fair warning, those co-branding opportunities will be fewer and farther between. Launching on Tuesday in Sephora stores, the kaleidoscope shaped bottle is targeted to 30-something year old women who are “urban, arty, and creative”.

He told WWD, “I love to play with words, as I love to play with scents. A fragrance is not made to be explained by words. A mix of scents creates something we can smell but not describe. I can tell you that the base is patchouli fraction orpur, benzoin Laos orpur, tonka bean and musk, and the heart (a perfume must have a heart that should break, in a way, our heart) is heliotrope (one of my favorite scents), violet and freesia. But I don’t want to be too technical about the fragrance. I prefer a sentimental approach.”  Sounds a bit over the top for our tastes, but being major Lagerfeld fans we have to show our support.  Would you buy it?

As for his collection, it’s apparently flying off the shelf– much like the Kaiser’s diffusion line for H&M. According to Terry Lundgren, big boss man of Macy’s, they were “blown away by the sell-throughs with Karl. Even before his p.a. [public appearance], we did more than $1 million in sales.”

Speaking of Gucci, Ford compares his time at the Italian luxury house to the work he does now: “At Gucci, it was all about creating The Look each season The Shoe, The Bag, The Hair. But now I have no desire to create The Look. I just want to make beautiful, glamorous clothes.” Pity he won’t wear them, though.”

But before sending a look down the intimate, exclusive runway, Ford always has his PR lady Whitney or Carine Roitfeld when she’s not pussyfooting with Karl Lagerfeld, try it on: ”If they don’t wear it, it doesn’t go into production.”

As for that infamous French Vogue he guest edited for Roitfeld, Ford explains his reasoning behind all the geriatric grinding: ”My mother doesn’t like me saying this but she’s in her late seventies and her boyfriend’s in his late sixties. The point is she’s active and looks amazing, and yet we’ve taught ourselves to think that ageing’s embarrassing. That’s why I left all the wrinkles in the story shot for French Vogue of an old couple having sex”.

And then there’s Ford’s burgeoning film career after 2009′s wonderful A Single Man. While his next film, allegedly a comedy, is “ready to go,” the life of a filmmaker has its difficulties: ”I would lose my mind if I just did films…I enjoy the speed of fashion.
