10 Fashion Feats and Fails at the Met Costume Institute Gala

The Metropolitan Museum of Art‘s annual Costume Institute Gala is tirelessly referred to as the Oscars of fashion and it certainly ranks as the industry’s glitziest and most glamorous night. But unlike the Oscars red carpet, where actresses willfully play it safe for fear of a career-defining performance on the worst dressed list, at the Met Gala the balls are to the haute couture wall. This is Fashion with a capital effin’ F. Sometimes the results are truly stunning and other times they’re…how can I put this gently…god-awful. Let’s take a look back at the Met Gala’s greatest hits and misses.

Feat! -- Daphne Guinness in Alexander McQueen, 2011 Guinness literally made an event out of her getting ready for the ball and it payed off with a fitting and flawless tribute to the designer whose "Savage Beauty" was just beginning its historic run.

Fail! -- Madonna in Louis Vuitton, 2009 Louis Vuitton had a banner year in 2009 for providing the worst looks per celeb capita than any other brand, but Madonna's woefully mistaken, thigh-highed misstep best represents the entire lot.

Feat! -- Kate Moss in Marc Jacobs, 2009 Marc Jacobs did better by his girl Kate Moss, however, and the two were the clear belles of the ball. Crafty, crafty, crafty.

Fail! -- Katie Holmes in Giorgio Armani, 2008 While everything is wrong with this look -- the makeup, the bob, the dress, the shoes, the necklace, the shoulder purse in the shape of Tom Cruise -- Katie tried to pawn off responsibility on the blue pumps to her daughter Suri, whom she claimed picked them out. Based on Suri's exquisite taste, I highly doubt it.

Feat! -- Anna Wintour in Chanel Haute Couture, 2008 A controversial choice, I know, but hear me out. Anna Wintour so often goes the very safe and classically chic route, but for the Met's "Superheroes" exhibit, the editrix showed a whiff of whimsy by way of Wonder Woman. However, never one to not keep it real, note that she's still in Chanel and it's still haute couture.

Fail! -- Serena Williams in Oscar de la Renta, 2011 I'll preface this by saying the Royal Wedding had recently happened at this point, so fascinators were just beginning their ascent into the pop culture atmosphere. Williams opted for the burgeoning trend, thus sending this outfit into costume, not Costume Institute, territory.

Feat! -- Gisele in Versace, 2008 Gisele came to the ball in 2008 for one reason and one reason alone: to serve sex on a platter and have the world take a good long taste. So what better dressing than Versace and its history of jaw-droppers?

Fail! -- Shalom Harlow in Bob Mackie, 2009 Sure it looks like Shalom Harlow just rolled out of the dumpster and into a mutated Hefty bag, but dammit she's committed to it and for that I say, "Respect."

Feat! -- André Leon Talley being escorted by Alber Elbaz, 2007 I'm assuming this cape was by ALT's go-to haberdasher Chado Ralph Rucci, but if I'm mistaken who cares because this scene is all one needs to know about the Met Gala. Or anything.

Fail! -- Christina Hendricks in L'Wrenn Scott, 2010 Christina Hendricks has the best kind of problem because of her, shall we say, ample assets. You know, her giant cans. Therefore it's hard to find a dress that accentuates without advertising and the girls are on a mutli-season campaign in this number. But at least they serve as a distraction from whatever's happening with the hair and makeup.

Sheer palazzo pants, bold prints over bright stripes, prairie-leaning leather shorts and bell sleeves with eyelets have landed her in over 165 stores in 10 countries. This Aussie got her fashionable start in London working for MTV styling the Stylissimo series, where she got the opportunity to dress Natalie Imbruglia. From there she launched her own styling firm Torn and thus has worked with lady powerhouses like Kelis, Destiny’s Child , Blondie and Marianne Faithful. During this time, she started selling her one-off 50s inspired silk print tops that were snatched up by Kate Moss and influential others. After stints designing for companies like Buddhist Punk, she launched her own label Alice McCALL in 2004. And here we are, Fall 2012.

Agent Provocateur: Ryan Molloy of Women Management

The agency’s philosophy to embrace non-traditional beauty has launched the careers of supers like Kate Moss and Carmen Kass and given us the alluring versatility of women such as Lea T and Jourdan Dunn. And with representation in New York, Paris and Milan, it’s easy to see why Women is a dynamic force in the industry. I got a chance to talk with 5-year agent Ryan Molloy about why she loves the industry and what makes Women one of the best in the business.

How long have you been working as an agent? How did you get started in the industry?
I have been working at Women for the past five years. The opportunity presented itself when I was inbetween jobs, in search of a new career path. A good friend of mine was an agent at Women and invited me in to meet the team and discuss a possible opening. The core philosophies of the agency and its overall history really drove me to want to learn more about the biz. I did as much research as possible beforehand, and the rest is history. All went well, and I’ve been here ever since.

Women Management has one of the most impressive model client lists in the business, it must be dynamic to work with these girls. Do you have a favorite aspect of your job, something you love doing time and again?
It is a complete honor to be a part of the Women team and work with some of the most talented models and agents in industry. I must say, I am continuously inspired by my job and the chance to build a career that is successful and fulfilling. The possibilities are endless and the paths are all different. But with the right team and support, anything and everything is possible. We have such a strong core at Women, it makes the job that much more amazing.

Is there a specific campaign you worked on that particularly stands out in your mind as a favorite?
The Tom Ford campaign is memorable and confirmation that he is a legend and one of my favorite designers. Second to that has to be booking Daria Strokous in the film Contagion.

Can you talk about any exciting projects you have coming up with your clients at Women?
We are in the middle of campaign season, so I can’t reveal too much. You’ll just have to wait and see….

Old School Art Show Features New School Curators

Fresh artists are kicking it old school. So old, it spans the end of time. This weekend at the Old School on Mott and Prince, 23 emerging curators fill 20 classrooms with the work of NYC artists under the theme Apocolist for the Spring Break Art Show. The focus on the rising curatorial eyes of the art world makes this exhibition an exception to the types of shows to which we are typically exposed, like exclusive galleries. Winding through one of the oldest schools in NY, you’ll find a video installation of an other-worldly being surviving on a pink planet in an avant gard, a car-wreck show, explosions of color, scene-scapes that can make you feel insignificant and alive, and Kate Moss reminding you that humans do indeed err.

The Spring Break Art Show is open March 8-10, noon-9PM. March 11, noon-6. @ The Old School, 233 Mott St, NYC.

How do we measure the rankings of the world’s Top Models? By number of campaigns and editorials? By paycheck? By how gorgeous they are? What with disputes on brand and magazine prestige, and definitions of beauty, we’ll let the internet be the eye of the beholder. PeekScore measured the digital imprints of top models and determined who is has the biggest web presence, i.e. most written about, followed and searched. Some of these results may surprise you. Others, like the strong presence of Victoria’s Secret Angels, may not. See who reigns supreme, as voted on by every single one of us, without our knowledge. Who is number one? Heidi Klum? Kate Moss? Gisele Bündchen? Lara Stone?

Lancôme's spokesmodel has been heating up Chanel campaigns, Vogue editorials, and apparently Google.

This 38-year-young top model is still demanding top money. This Vogue shot is from 2003, and she was just featured in Tom Ford's campaign.

Stunning runways and covers and everything in between, she also the star of the soon to be released film “Belle du Seigneur.” She's also quite the giver and is involved in charity work, like the one she founded, Naked Heart Foundation which builds parks for kids in Russia.

As famed for her gap tooth smile as she is for being Carine Roitfeld's obsession, the Calvin Klein spokesmodel and current Pirelli calendar star has a distinctly well proportioned body and a face to remember.

The first model I said I would switch teams for is one of the most fiery models on the planet. Maybe it's Maybeline, for which she is the spokemodel, but most likely it's her innate hottness, highlighted with a touch of makeup.

This perfect 10 is in. After the Project Runway host popped on her Angel wings for the Victoria's Secret runway show 6 weeks after popping out a baby, she's been superglued to supermodel legend status.

How do you beat a perfect 10? Be Kate Moss. Her weighty digital imprint does not match the waifish body that made her a star. The weight, dress size and health of models have always been hot-button topics, both in and out of the fashion industry. While runways are slowly shying away from the ultra-thin, heroin chic craze that dominated the late-90s and resurfaced in the mid-00s with all those pale, starving girls from Eastern Europe, and the CFDA has enacted initiatives to ensure the health and safety of models, there is still a large disparity between the average woman and what she sees when opens up the pages of Vogue. And with fashion, the trend simply trickles down to the rest of society. Just take a look at the skeletons on this Sunday’s Golden Globes red carpet. Bombarded with these images on a daily basis, how can impressionable young girls and women in general have a healthy body image? Plus Model Magazine decided to address this issue head-on with an editorial featuring Katya Zharkova and a handful of disturbing factoids.

While one could argue that the statement — “Twenty years ago the average fashion model weighed 8% less than the average woman. Today she weighs 23% less.” — doesn’t take into account the fact that women 20 years ago probably weighed less than they do now — two decades of fast food will do that to you — one only has to consider who the average fashion model was 20 years ago. Cindy Crawford, Naomi Campbell, Christy Turlington, Linda Fucking Evangelista…these women were Amazons and Glamazons; healthy, gorgeous and glowing with the energy of life and $10,000 a day paychecks. Then Kate Moss came shuffling in and changed the game. Despite the veracity of the facts, if anything the spread stimulates a debate. The rumors have been buzzing around Carine Roitfeld since she officially exiting Vogue Paris in February -- and in the process creating a future supermodel in Saskia de Brauw -- after 10 landmark, nipple-bearing years. But through it all, Carine has been the picture of calm and chic, hiking up her pencil skirt and reinventing herself as a brilliant and in-demand stylist/the coolest bitch on the planet. Though an unsurprising but nevertheless brilliant choice, Sarah Burton's handiwork cemented the Duchess of Cambridge (née Kate Middleton) as not only a bona fide style icon but a phenomenon on both sides of the Atlantic. Meanwhile, Burton proved she was the right person to carry on McQueen's brilliant legacy and take it to the next level.

Alexander McQueen's Savage Beauty The most successful fashion exhibit in the Metropolitan Museum of Art's history, Alexander McQueen's Savage Beauty set records and inspired fashion lovers and neophytes alike. The exhibit proved so popular, in fact, the Met extended its run twice. Even then, there were still lines of people waiting hours to get into the museum, but for 661,509 people it was well-worth the wait.

John Galliano stars in Gallianogate John Galliano's downfall has loomed large all year, particularly since Christian Dior has yet to announce his replacement, despite a neverending back-and-forth with a stubborn Marc Jacobs. Following a stint in rehab, a guilty conviction in Paris for making anti-Semitic remarks, and the general destruction of his reputation, Galliano at least had one bright spot this year: designing good friend Kate Moss' wedding dress. Galliano's dismissal also raised questions about the stress designers are under to deliver multiple collections a year -- just ask Balmain's Christophe Decarnin. Everyone's still waiting to see who Dior picks to take the throne and if Galliano can make a comeback after such a devastating fall. As 2011 comes to a close, 2012 has the promise of even more scandals, breakdowns and breakthroughs that we cannot wait to cover obsessively for you. Over in the no-man’s land known as The Armory on the far east side of Manhattan, media from around the world gathered for the official launch of the 2012 Pirelli Calendar. Photographer Mario Sorrenti and models Natasha Poly, Joan Smalls, Isabeli Fontana and actress Rinko Kikuchi were also on hand to fête the 39th edition of the portfolio.

Sorrenti is actually the first Italian to photograph the Pirelli Calendar, whose past lensmen have included Herb Ritts (1994, 1999), Richard Avedon (1995, 1997), Bruce Weber (1998, 2003), Annie Leibovitz (2000), Mario Testino (2001), Peter Lindbergh (1996, 2002), Patrick Demarchelier (2005, 2008), Mert and Marcus (2006), Inez and Vinoodh (2007), Terry Richardson (2010) and last year, Karl Lagerfeld.

For the shoot in Corsica, Sorrenti chose mostly women with whom he had previously worked, including supermodel among supermodels Kate Moss, whom the photographer has known for some 20 years — the two worked together on the iconic Calvin Klein “Obsession” campaign when Sorrenti was just 21 and Moss was practically still in diapers. In the “Making of ” short film that preceded a Q&A with Sorrenti, he remarked that he “couldn’t do this without her.”

And god (i.e. Anna Wintour) knows Vogue Paris covers have only been decent to pretty good since Emmanuelle Alt took over the reins earlier this year, but nothing quite gasp-worthy.

Then under the buzzer, this happens. By referencing/recycling that eight-year-old cover and giving it their own spin, Alt and co. end the year on a decidedly high note. Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott capture Moss in glam rock Ziggy Stardust regalia for FrenchVogue‘s December/January 2012 issue. Freak out, this moonage daydream’s so chic.

Galliano Atelier Honored…Galliano Himself, Not So Much

It’s been a hard year for John Galliano — a rollercoaster ride of drunken lows and drug-fueled highs that saw him lose his job at Christian Dior and even his own namesake label. Despite designing Kate Moss‘ wedding dress, there hasn’t been much for the disgraced designer to celebrate as of late. And there still isn’t. The John Galliano atelier has been given the honorary title of Enterprise du Patrimoine Vivant, or Living Heritage Company, by the French Ministry of the Economy, Industry and Employment.

Given to French businesses with highly specialized knowledge, the honor was bestowed on the 15 workers of the atelier, each with over a decade of experience in couture techniques. As for Galliano himself, he’s no doubt happy for his atelier and not at all bitter.

Forever 21 Presents a Collection in Holograms

Kate Moss isn’t the only hologram to appear during a runway fashion show. For the first time in the United States, fast fashion retailer Forever 21 presented its Hologram Fashion Show in New York and Los Angeles. Produced together with space150, the 7-minute show features holographic models walking a cosmic runway, disappearing into starbursts and climbing invisible staircases that light up underfoot.

“Our customers are very digitally savvy,” Linda Chang, Forever 21 senior marketing manager said. “We love that, because it challenges us to meet them head on with a fashion experience that’s innovative, fun and progressive.”

Louis Vuitton‘s spring 2012 show featured a carousel with models riding side-saddle (of course) and Kate Moss – who, by the way, “asked to be in the show” — closed as she did last season. All in all, another success for one Ms. Marc Jacobs, but the question on everyone’s mind revolves around that whole Christian Dior rumor.

“I could never do this anywhere else, do you know what I mean? Not just the Paris thing, but Vuitton, allows me,” Jacobs enthusiastically told the Daily Telegraph after the show. The Telegraph also reports that the negotiations between Jacobs and Dior may have hit the proverbial wall — again — thanks to the designer’s insistence that his entire LV team come with him.

Inspired by a number of Kate’s tattoos, the collection features a diamond anchor necklace along with 22 other cute, kitschy pieces including hearts, crescent moons, and stars made from gold and precious stones. The line launches October 1st and will be sold exclusively in France, on Fred’s e-boutique and at the in store Fred shop at Harrod’s.

There I was, paging through the recently-arrived September issue of Vogue featuring beautiful blushing bride Kate Moss on the cover, when I run into this image, nonchalantly placed within the editorial spread shot by Mario Testino: John Galliano giving Kate’s veil a good extending.

No big deal, right? John Galliano, the disgraced former designer of Christian Dior who has yet to grant an inerview or do anything really public aside from his very public court case, posing with supermodel Kate Moss, who steadfastly stayed true to her longtime friend by wearing the wedding gown he designed for her. In Vogue.

Once again, no big deal.

Turns out that fairy tale affair has gotten some brides all riled up.

According to a study by Brides magazine — it’s called science – there has been a 200% increase in horse and carriage rental inquiries. Just inquiries, though; I mean, why buy the horse when you can get the weave for free, am I right?

Brides‘ incredibly important research also reveals that 52% of brides are more likely to wear a veil thanks to Kate’s now iconic Alexander McQueen wedding gown and that there has been a 25% increase in sales of red aisle runners.
