‘Expo 2010′ A Benefit Fashion Show By NYU Students

Last Friday, the Fashion Indie crew attended the benefit fashion show “EXPO 2010″ at New York University. For the second consecutive year, EXPO will be donating all proceeds to Room to Read, an organization which provides children in developing countries with libraries and the funding necessary to receive a quality education.

First a dance crew opened the show, then many different designers’ clothes appeared on the runway. I have to say that I was very impressed by these students: they are so dynamic, they worked hard for a very great cause. There was also two humorous hosts, and even an intermission with food and drinks brought out to our front row seats. DJ Orazio Rispo was soo good, I was dancing in my seat during the entire show!

Fashion participants include Prada, Gilt Groupe, Nicole Miller, Eryn Brinié, Katie Gallagher, Rent the Runway, Project Runway’s ALTHEA HARPER, +AA-, Vilebrequin, Olive Wu, Elisabeth Dran, Hisami Koyama, Debut, RHLS, Rosena Sammi jewelry,and Parish Nation.

Designer Discovery: Katie Gallagher

23-year-old designer Katie Gallagher creates technical, architecturally-constructed garments perfect for NYC, since she uses a strictly all-black palette.

The strong shoulders in Gallagher’s jackets and dresses would be a good fit for Lady Gaga, and are made out of wool, Lycra spandex and calfskin. The designer is featured in the March issue of Elle magazine, where she describes a one-of-a-kind buckskin bomber jacket. Her uncle shot a deer in Pennsylvania and her cousin dyed the deerskin black and gave it to her as a Christmas present, with the bullet holes still in tact.

Who on earth is this Katie Gallagher girl and how can I get my hands on her entire Spring 2010 collection!? Gallagher is one designer I haven’t had the pleasure of acquainting myself with until recently, and let me tell you, she’s one to remind you that not everything has been done before. I would describe her Spring 2010 collection as biker meets matador. The dark navy blue and black hues give Gallagher’s collection a gothic vibe, beautifully contrasted by the romantic, billowy sleeves of blouses and jackets. There is no doubt that Gallagher endorses the idea “the tighter, the better,” so this collection is not for the body conscious! Zippers, sheers, leathers, straps, drapes and panels. This is art.

NY based designer Katie Gallagher creates some very interesting skin colored clothing. Her designs resemble that of Yohji Yamamoto and she probably takes inspiration from Gareth Pugh. I love that her fashion illustrations are very atypical, and resemble a sort of zombie rather than fashion model. What an intersting way to showcase the designs…
