Look One: Shredded ‘n’ Leather

The Long  Tube Skirt: Mary Meyer, $94

California native cum NY transplant Mary Meyer fuses her talent for art into clothing that makes sense. Most notable for her geo-graphics and dyeing, she also has some revolutionary ideas about garment making. The construction of the skirt is what inspires me: she’s purposefully left the knit hemline unfinished so that the wearer may cut it to the desired length, no tailor required. The ground grazing-option takes effect when you place the waistline at any height. Named the AJM Skirt for Andrew J. Mukamal of Kell On Earth assistantship, Meyer was inspired by his grunge gone goth glam; long soft layers that counterpose plaid and leather.

The Shredded Top: Evil Twin, $89

“A physical copy of one’s self whom has altered morality” is the definition of this Australian brand’s namesake. I gather that this Evil Twin‘s twin shirt would not have holes, nor spaced fringe, nor a marble tie dye, all of which sneakily camouflage my exposed skin. With the skirt up high resting just below the bosom, I only have need for a bust long top. This holy top was born to move and shake, so if scandal isn’t your thing, throw a hot bandeau underneath as a bra, and let the hue show through. Lest you end up locked up for indecent exposure.

The Leather Jacket: Kill City, $458

With a slouch squared collar and super long sleeve lining, the relaxed rocker jacket is the ideal weight for Spring’s transition. Based in LA, Kill City is forged in that flexible weather to the sound of the rockin’ punk wail of Iggy Pop.

The Side-Laced Wedge: Madison Harding, $185 (originally $265)

Created intently for the downtown pavement pounder, these suede wedge booties ground the outfit’s transitional effect. Hilary Rosenman of Madison Ave., N.Y. and Barri Budin of Harding Dr., N.J. hauled their fashion knowledge to the East Village and began making astutely designed Madison Harding shoes.

The Hair Corset: Court, $48

Their very own hair corset comes from the Native American tradition of hair tying. They lace up like the top of a riding boot and encapsulate the pony tail. More details on this piece in the coming looks.

Backstage after the show I got to meet Max Azria, I nearly died. I gushed to him how stunning the show was noted the square theme. I asked the only question I had time to squeeze out before he was whisked away: How does he think a woman wants to dress, the core philosophy that fuels BCBG:

“Women ultimately want to look cool. They want to look classy, and yes, chic.” – Max Azria

Simple as that. And he certainly knows how to oblige.

In July, Wonder Woman went over a dramatic and controversial makeover and Cutrone, in her typical blunt, matter-of-fact manner said that the heroine “went from Paris to Poughkeepsie.”

Now, I grew up in Poughkeepsie (pronounced Po-Kip-See) so I have free reign to talk as much shit as I want to about it. Also, my hometown pride is virtually nonexistent at best, so when someone else disses it, I’m usually not offended; rather, I’m often in agreement.

Some other Poughkeepsians (Poughkeepsieites?), understandably would take offense. The president and CEO of the local chamber of commerce asked bemusedly, “How could she even compare Poughkeepsie to Paris? We are so much better than Paris could ever be.” The director of marketing for the mall, the Poughkeepsie Galleria, defended the mall’s patrons, calling them “tastefully dressed.”

When reached for comment, Cutrone explained that she meant no harm in her comment. She has a  house near Poughkeepsie and frequents the Galleria every weekend.

“Her look is very shopping mall,” Cutrone explained. “It’s like any shopping mall, but my mall is the Poughkeepsie mall. Wonder Woman looks like any girl in a mall – anywhere.”

True story, Cutrone. Wonder Woman looks like an unfortunate hybrid of a soccer mom, dominatrix and teen runaway. I mean, are those stirrup pants? And  a Cuban heel? Superheroes, like any other supers, need glamor. We’re fighting crime here kids, not chaperoning a field trip to the sanitation plant.

Cutrone went on to say, “I love Poughkeepsie. I probably know and love that town more than most people who spend their time in that town.”

Well, I certainly can’t argue with that.

“As of right now it doesn’t really look like we’re doing it anymore,” said the 25-year-old fashion designer. When asked if it could possibly move from MTV to another network, Port said, “No, at this point it’s not.”

I love the city- just not MTV’s The City… it was definitely a whole season of my life I will never get back.. might be a bit on the dramatic side but what do you expect- you know it makes your gossip way more exciting… at least everyone is far more fond of Kelly Cutrone and DVF now?!….

Plus it must be said that the true fashionista on this show was my favorite Olivia Palermo and her Blair Waldorf inspired style!.. who cares if everyone was a bit on the negative side about her office skills who needs them when you have killer outfits.

Who knows maybe The City is canceled because Olivia is getting her own show… hey, it could happen!

For those of you who like Gossip Girl you’re bound to love what’s coming next. Kelly Cutrone’s People’s Revolution has just inked a deal with Fake Empire, the executive producers of Gossip Girl, for a scripted fashion based show. Can’t wait for some more details!

Welcome to the Givenchy showroom! If it’s true, as Kelly Cutrone says, everyone in fashion is a freak or a follower, for his latest collection Riccardo Tisci stormed a new fashion trail that evidently shows that he likes his fashion freaks divided into Saints and Sinners.

We loved the juxtaposition of Tisci’s monastic influences, like the crown of thorns necklace and ever present leather sandals, with the sensuality of the lace and leopard print. The overall elegant and formal tailoring of the collection, with the narrow trousers and hidden detail, was amazing. With an intricate use of embroidery and print that our buyers just fell in love with.

Last week, Becks and I had the opportunity to attend the 9th Annual Tulips & Pansises: The Headress Affair at Gotham Hall in NYC. A benefit for VillageCare, a nonprofit which helps those with HIV/AIDS, the event brought together a dozen extremely talented designers, Whitney Port, Fern Malis, Kelly Cutrone and Patricia Fields.

Always an event to look forward too, Tulips & Pansises outdid itself these year with headdresses designed by The Blondes, Tracey Reese, Betsey Johnson and DKNY. Best of all, the event was staged for an episode of The City, which we apparently will be on due to our seating directly behind the People’s Revolution crew, which included the super cute Ava Cutrone.

Can’t wait to see that episode, especially since we are also in  the episode airing this week, which takes place at a Guess Party we attending in the Spring with Joe Zee. Maybe FashionIndie will get a bigger cameo in the future?

If you were following our Tweets last week, you’d know that Becks and I met Kelly and Patricia. Patty grilled me on her work and told me if she ever decided to get married, it would be with someone who “entertained her”, male or female, while Kelly revealed that she’s questioning the merits of her book now considering the recent loss of her father.

Kelly, your book is major and you should never question it. You’ve created a warning tome for young females who enter New York with Sex and the City dreams and for that you should be proud.

My favorite event of the year, ‘Tulips and Pansies-The Headdress Affair’ is next Thursday, and I can’t begin to tell you how excited I am for this years lineup. Carolina Herrera, DKNY, Betsey Johnson, Lilly Pulitzer, Tracy Reese among many others, will join forces with NYC’s finest floral designers to create a runway show of elaborate floral headdresses made from living plants and fresh cut flowers. Keep reading…

The springtime event, which raises funds for VillageCare (www.villagecare.org), a non-profit organization providing vital healthcare programs to people living with HIV/AIDS, will be hosted by TV Personality & Style Guru James Aguiar and Co-chaired by People’s Revolution Founder Kelly Cutrone and Writer & Direct-Action Philanthropist Ariana N. Rockefeller. Guest judges include Fern Mallis, Kelly Killoren Bensimon, John Bartlett, Ashleigh Verrier, and Freddie Leiba. They will honor the headdress design teams in the categories of “Most Beautiful, Most Original, Most Entertaining and Most Outrageous.”

You know we really couldn’t wait until The City to get our dose of Kelly Cutrone and the rest of the People’s Revolution crew, which is why we’re extremely excited that Kell’s launched her own Youtube Channel. It’s like Bravo, with none of the drama. Rundowns after the jump.

Episode One revealed Andrew’s $2000 Rodarte purchase (though we know that had to have come from yesterday’s killer sample sale) and Kell’s $40 Gap sweater buy. Not a great sign when the help has more money to spend, but we’ve had our fair share of rich girl interns, so we know the feeling. Also, thanks for the 420 shout out, almost forgot to light the ceremonious splif.

Episode Two revealed that Skinner makes boyfriends wait till she’s good and ready and isn’t afraid to make the boys take care of her pussy…cat, that is. (Yeah, this company is run by a 12 year old). Still heart her majorly and no one thinks you’re fat on TV.

Episode Three shows us Ava’s interviewing skills and a little info on Kell’s Spring Break fun. Cute, but why is everyone always wearing sunglasses?!?

We’re totally in hearts with Stefanie Skinner, the Public Relations workaholic from Kell on Earth, Bravo’s foray into the inner workings of fashion’s fave press house, People’s Revolution.  Whether she’s vouching for Andrew’s explosive diarrhea, getting hair tips from Tandrew or  managing the wrath of Kell, Stefanie is one PR girl whose emails we’ll never put on our SPAM list.

We got a chance to interview the Power Girl on life after reality.

On the show Fashion PR is presented like a high drama world of angry clients, shitty interns and breakdowns. Is it really so dramatic?

Fashion PR is a face-paced, cutthroat industry and you deal with a lot of people on many levels and many have a my way or the highway attitude. Trust me I’m not the first person to cry in an office, I’m just one of few that it happened to on camera on national television.

Kelly’s become famous for her tidbits of advice like “If You Have to Cry, Go Outside”. What would be your tagline if you had to choose just one?

Hmmm…F&$% my life? Ha!

On the show, you’re often portrayed as someone under an extreme amount of pressure who’s on the verge of breaking. How do you feel about your portrayal?

I’m not the only one under extreme pressures in our office, but at the time of filming I was survival of the fittest and I’ve been at the company for longer than interns and those that have come and gone. I think the portrayal is accurate in showing I’m a hard worker, dedicated and loyal. As the season continues you’ll also get to see that I am starting to learn that balance of life and work and I think I’m pretty funny at times too.

If you could represent any one in the fashion industry who would it be?

I love Marc Jacobs and Rick Owens since Mr. Mukamal (Andrew) has come into my life.

If you weren’t in fashion PR what would you be doing right now?

I always joke saying I would be a kindergarten teacher.

How has your life changed since the show? Are you totally a major celebrity now? Have you forgotten all the little people yet?

Celebrity no, but people have been recognizing me. Its surreal when people come up to like they know you, but its cool. I would never forget people that have always been in my life – they will always be there even if this all goes away- I am thankful to have a strong support and safety net.

Do you have a hidden talent?

Ha. no.

What’s the worst part of your day?

When my alarm goes off.

On last night’s episode, Kelly Cutrone went to Babeland to pick up a sex toy for a friend, and lube for an office employee. This was a bit shocking to most (duh), since the episode was supposed to air only online. Kelly called the producers and made sure to air the entire thing:

‘It was important to me that we spread the message that shopping for sex toys is OK,’ the p.r. honcho tells us. ‘I thought it was perfect. This isn’t something we should be ashamed to discuss.’”

Talk about rejection. Just tried friending Kelly Cutrone on Facebook and was told she has “too many friends” and Facebook will not let her add anymore. Is that even possible? I appreciate you trying to lessen the blow of not being considered one of your 4593 friends, but there is no need to lie. At least have the pussy balls to reject me for not giving a shit about who I am. I can totally deal with being a nobody in your eyes.

Fortunately, I’ve been given the chance to be her fan. Um, I’ll pass.

God, I LOVE THIS SHOW!!!

Last night on Kell on Earth we came ass to mouth with George Wayne, a Vanity Fair contributing editor who isn’t afraid to get into the party. The seemingly inept Contributing Editor was quick to pop one of Kelli’s Swarovski crystals, collected from an installation from Genetic Denim, without asking or wondering what that camera was doing there filming him. That’s called “life of the party” in my book.

This otherwise unimportant event does bring up three horribly revealing questions though.

1. Is it the norm amongst the upper echelon of the fashion media to pop pills at random parties? Not really a question I guess if we all know the answer, right?

2. Has Kelli passed out drugs to editors in the past? We already know she’s cool hanging out with hookers, but is she the unannounced drug lord of the fashion world as well? It would explain why so many of her clients manage to get such great press coverage…

3. Does Kelli have no control over what get’s aired on Bravo? She seemed to shoo away camera’s at the Chado Ralph Rucci show and this show is only showing the world how poorly organized and managed things are behind the scenes at People’s Revolution. For someone who is hired to keep control of the public image of fashion brands, you’d think she’d have a little more control over her own.

Also, was no one concerned about the potential lead poisoning which comes from ingesting crystals? Would love you’re thoughts on this episode if you watched it.

BRAVO’s newest series, Kell on Earth, has us all heating up! After last week’s fashion week mishap with client Chado Ralph Rucci, Kelly is determined to make sure the next show goes off without a hitch. But when front of house gets waaay out of hand during the press check-in, will newly-promoted employee Stefanie be able to handle the pressure? And Kelly and her staff have an emergency on their hands when a model collapses during one of their events, how will the team handle the crisis?

Corey and I started out in SoHo around 7, and ran into his friend Marilynn at the Grand.  After a few pink cocktails and a conversation with Kelly Cutrone about her selected footwear for workouts (cowboy boots),  we sorted out our itinerary for the rest of the night, hopped in a cab and headed to Rose Bar.  Apparently you can’t get in to Rose Bar without a reservation at the hotel after 9PM, and this was 9:30. Not a big deal considering the amount of places we knew for the night, so we headed to the Gates where our friends at Red Hot PR were hosting a party. I was told “it’s someone’s birthday party and then there’s some fashion party afterwards”…fashion? We’re in.

Hello Nole Marin! Nole made an appearance at the Gates last night (with his mother), and couldn’t stop staring at Corey, crush maybe? Or maybe he was considering a Corey finger puppet.  When the open bar ended, we’d met all sorts of people, and I had done my good deed by escorting in a guy on the street (only because the line was really long and he knew who Nole Marin was and that he was inside, this is someone that I want at a fashion party!), we headed over to Griffin. Who’s that we see?!

Mickey Rourke! And yes, he really does look like that in person.  Apparently Marilynn already knew the Mckster, and he told us he was going to the Griffin too, just not right then. We headed down to Tenjune, and apparently I look 12 so they didn’t want to let me in. Hi, I’m 21 not 12 Tenjune, and let me just tell you that all of those old men that are in there? They’d love me. I’ll get to that more later.  

So after being at Tenjune for a whole five minutes, we’d had more than we could stand and headed back towards Griffin and found ourselves at the center of the club, inches away from Mikey Rourke. Drinks were flowing, but not that heavily, we promise mom, and the live band was playing some good salsa music (I’ll have to get the photos from Marilynn of us dancing on the table in the middle of the club? haha), and then the night went down hill. Naturally, Mikey Rourke wouldn’t go out alone, he’d bring his manager and/or body guard to party alongside him and ‘pick up the slack,’ if you catch my drift. And that’s what they did.

A middle-aged man, maybe the same age as my dad, told me that he wanted to kidnap me…no, correction, he was GOING to kidnap me. Dude, I know I look 12, but I’m not a kid, you can’t kid-nap me. Luckily, we were inside of a loud, crowded club and it was easy to get lost in translation, so I went to my friends so they could save the day, and must’ve scared off the man three times my size and over twice my age. Well, almost. He found Marilynn and kidnapped her.

Round two, outside of the Griffin. 47-year-old man with a grey shag hairdo pins 21-year-old barely 5’0 and less than 100 lb girl in a corner. Am I supposed to think you’re cool because you manage Mickey Rourke, are just as old, and just as unattractive as he is? No, I don’t want to hook up with you. Ever. I’d rather throw up on myself. Somehow managed to run away, find Corey and say “we have to get out of here, NOW.” Problem is, where is Marilynn? “oh, she must be at the apartment,” says creepy old man. An hour or so later we finally save Marilynn, and walk to the train to go home (seeing as well all have to work in the morning). 5am, after falling asleep twice on the train and missing my stop, I decided to take a cab home, then slept on my futon using a towel as a blanket. 

Moral of the story: Stay away from old men.

Point of the story: MIKEY ROURKE’S MANAGER TRIED TO MAKE OUT WITH ME. EW.

Synopsis: Corey and I are very tired today, but promise to keep you entertained with our nightlife escapades this weekend!

Last night, the fashion people gathered at SoHo Grand to preview the new collection by Rad Hourani. Hourani told Style.com that this unisex line isn’t necessarily a diffusion line (priced from $100-400), but that “this is just more relaxed and easier to wear in cotton and jerseys.”  The line will be available in November online and in stores, perfect timing for these pieces, which include a lot of jackets, vests, super skinny jeans, t shirts, and perfectly draped shorts.  

Judging from the runway and all of the fashionable people there, must-haves for fall:

-guys in heels

-platforms

-destroyed tees

-partially shaved heads (for guys and girls)

-black, black, black

We had the pleasure of seeing the man himself, who was looking fabulous as to be expected.  Other sightings, Kelly Cutrone (who told us that she works out in her cowboy boots), Kate Lanphear, Malcom Harris.

VILLAGE CARE OF NEW YORK’S 8th ANNUAL “TULIPS & PANSIES – THE HEADDRESS AFFAIR” will be on Thursday, May 14, and I can’t tell you how excited both Daniel and I are. We had such a great time last year (photos above). And this years designers are top tier: Tory Burch, Chado Ralph Rucci, Pamella Roland, Cynthia Steffe, Lilly Pulitzer, Alvin Valley, Thierry Mugler, Zang Toi, Michael Vollbracht, b.michael and others.

Each designer will be paired with NYC’s finest floral designers including Preston Bailey, L’Olivier, Ovando and Zezé in order to create a high-fashion runway show of elaborate floral headdresses made entirely from living plants and fresh cut flowers. The event, which raises funds for Village Care of New York, a non-profit organization providing vital health care programs to people living with HIV/AIDS, is Chaired by Jack Curry, Editor of USA Weekend and TV Guide and Kelly Cutrone, Founder of People’s Revolution.

I know what all you little whinny commenters are going to say before you even say it, so here it goes. “Kelly Cutrone was famous before she was even on The Hills!” Blah Blah Blah Blah Blah (assume an annoying snotty tone). Here’s the bottom line people. Yes, Kelly Cutrone was well known in her field/industry before she ever appeared on The Hills. However, she was not popular enough to get her own show, which exactly what this People’s Revolution iron fisted boss is getting. The original producers of Project Runway (The Magical Elves) are teaming up with Catrone to bring viewers the “nitty-gritty” side of the publicity world. Being the PR person I am (imagine that I’m not even a writer, so get off my ass about my rare grammatical errors) naturally interested in the show. Keep an eye out for your Corey Moran/Fashion Indie cameo bitches! No word on when the show is going to start up, but we’ll keep you posted as we hear more!

Shooting The Hills spinoff entitled The City, Whitney Port, former employee of Kelly Cutrone has transfered under the wing of Diane Von Furstenberg. Though we knew Cutrone wouldn’t be on The City, not many people could come to an answer when propositioned with why. Speaking of the situation, Kelly says

“When I thought about The Hills, when Lisa Love called me at Vogue and when I talked to them, I thought, There has to be a reason why Anna [Wintour]‘s doing this. You know? I feel like I maximized that.”

In true diva character, Kelly went on to conclude:

“I also didn’t really feel like it was a great idea to be on a spinoff of a spinoff of a spinoff. I felt like I already rolled the dice.l

Though Cutrone certainly doesnt want to be on a spinoff, if she were to do a show again, she’s sure she wants to own part of it. Control, control, control; she just can’t get enough! The gal has managed to scoop up some advice and best wishes for Diane.

“Your whole Internet system — whenever MTV comes around — is going to go down. So the cameras blow out the Internet system. I told her I thought it would be a fantastic thing for her business.”
