Modeling Schools are a Total Waste of Time and Money

I am sure you have all seen those adverts saying, “…become a top model…”. Or “You can become a model in only 6 weeks…” etc.

I find it sad and pathetic that so many kids and parents fall for those solicitations. I can only imagine how much money is tossed out the window by so many those hoping to become models via the Modeling Schools offering fame and fortune in the fashion business.

So for those of you reading this and hoping to become models, let me edify you to the reality of the business.

There is no school out there that can make you that promise and keep it.

Modeling Schools

To become a model the reality is the following:

If you are over 5?-9? or 1m 75 cm around 14-16 years of age or even younger.

Have a unique look that breaks with convention.

A classic conventional look that is really commercial.

Have been discovered by a credible model agency scout or recognized fashion photographer.

A fashion magazine editor has discovered you and sent you to one of the above agencies or other credible agencies in the major modeling centers.

Have been to see the credible model agencies around like Elite, Ford, Next, IMG, Marilyn, One Model Management, Folio, Select, Premier, Modelwerk, Viva, etc. and they have accepted you for their roster.

All modeling agencies worth their weight, will teach the models the necessary talent to survive in the business. They will warn them against certain career pitfalls, who and what to avoid, teach them how to walk for runway work, as well as some of the more important aspects of posing and attitudes needed to approach a photo and video shoot. Of course there are other types of modeling that I have not mentioned, like hand, leg, body, extra work, glamor, erotic, people, lifestyle etc. modeling that falls under a very different category and doesn’t really require the above attributes.

Perhaps schools wishing to teach poise, posture, social graces, table manners, walking gracefully etc. should just advertise themselves as Charm Schools. At least then those wishing to learn the above would be well informed. If none of the above situations apply, I suggest that you save your money and invest in other aspects of your capabilities and pass GO and save your $200.00. One day you might want to pass this on to those seeking your advice.

Alber Gets in Touch with Lanvin’s Inner Child

Alber Elbaz is launching his first kids collection under Lanvin, for girls age 4-10, alongside the brand’s resort collection in June.

The 25 piece luxury line will include T-shirts, coats, sweaters and accessories made from fabrics that cost as much as 10 times as those normally used for kiddy kouture. Though I don’t much care for children (years of riding the subway with them has seen to that), I’ve always thought the best, and really the only reason to have them is the opportunity to play dress up. Hopefully the next kid collection will include tranny training heels. [WWD]

Kate Gosselin is Lonely, Thinks We Care

A friend to one of America’s biggest fame whores shares some concerns about the mother of eight. But I can’t imagine too many people are sharing the sympathy. Gosselin’s friend spoke to Radar Online and revealed that “Kate is really sad and lonely with few true friends.” It appears that the mother’s only true confidant is her body guard, Steve Neild. The interview with Radar Online doesn’t end before Kate’s friend gets the chance to add that “Even her kids have noticed their mom is sometimes too tired to play with them when the cameras are not rolling.” So basically Kate only acts like the perfect mother when the cameras are rolling. As if we didn’t suspect this already.

The Landmark Case of Hipster v. Gay

Ah, that old debate. As sexuality becomes more and more fluid and jeans get tighter and tighter, it’s hard out there for a gay to discern a plain old common douchebag hipster from a boy-humping, disco-dancing, Streisand-listening friend of Dorothy. In reality, the only thing really separating one from the other is a few too many PBRs and a dimly-lit bar. However, for sartorial’s sake, let’s do a quick rundown of the articles these two groups have in common.

Plaid shirts

Once the sole realm of the lesbian, the gays have adopted this practical top as their own. Hipsters have been lumberjacking in their plaid for ages so it’s merely a question of cut and sleeve length. A zhuzhed sleeve almost always spells out queer, but be careful, as I’ve been attracted to my fair share of similarly-attired dykes and T-girls.

Skinny jeans cum skinny jean shorts

The go-to short of both sets, a slim fit jean short gives a flattering silhouette without showing too much gam. A short short, though, is a mostly gay thing as my friends and I consider anything not grazing your testes to be a full-on pant.

Decolletage

A billowy, boob-bearing tank or T is a go-to for any self-loving homo on the prowl, but the hipster has also been known to slip a nip in the hot Williamsburg summer. If said top is paired with a jegging, however, the answer is more or less clear.

Murses/Man Bags

As Paris Is Burning taught me, “Everybody knows that an evening bag is a must. No lady is sure at night.” I rarely go anywhere sans a bag, as I never know where I’ll end up. And the bigger the better. Now, this is perhaps the easiest identifying article. If you see a boy with a messenger bag, or a shoulder bag, or a tote from Trader Joe’s, he’s probably a hetero. If you see a boy with a Louis tote with a beaver tale hanging off of it, he’s actually a lady. And make sure you treat him like one.

American Apparel

Though the popular chain is in some serious financial trouble, it remains a favorite among both gay and hipster. AA has catered to the hipster set from the get-go, but the gays, if anything, know a good deal. The hipster will most likely be found perusing the oversized tanks and skinny jeans, while the gay will be happily leafing through the women’s tops, rompers and leggings. Unisex, after all, is just a term the gays invented so we can openly wear women’s clothes.

Bikes

Personally, I don’t do bikes, but they seem to big among the kids. Gaga knows the gays love to ride anything, but, moreover, bikes are just an economical and environmentally-friendly way to get around. If there’s a basket and/or a bell, however, take a wild guess.

Calf tattoos

I love a good calf tattoo, but as with all tattoos, it depends on what it is. I am personally bereft of ink, but I’m hoping to get this tattooed somewhere one day and the calf would be my best best. And that is why I’m a grade-A homosexual. If I were to get, say, my name tattooed in some language I don’t understand, then I’d be in hipster, perhaps even Guido territory. Meanwhile, that’s an idea for another post. Guido v. gay. The possibilities are endless!

Mo/Faux hawks

Everyone’s jumped on this particular bandwagon so it’s best to avoid anyone with this cut, lest you want to avoid shaving your pubic hair for a week to get rid of the crabs. No offense to anyone with a hawk. Or anyone with crabs. They both can happen to good people.

Angelina Jolie was in Cancun last month to promote her movie Salt, and while there she made time for an interview with the British fashion publication Stylist. Her kids Shiloh, Maddox, Pax, and Zahara also made the trip to Mexico, and they later joined her for the rest of her worldwide press tour. The family is now in Northern California for a few weeks as Brad Pitt works on Moneyball. Angelina spoke to the magazine about her family life, how she and Brad manage to fit in alone time, and Shiloh’s much-discussed style. She said:

On date nights and alone time with Brad:

“Yeah, we just have
to schedule it. We don’t normally have anyone spend the night with our
family, so once every week or two weeks, we’ll ask somebody to spend the
night, so we can go and be alone together. We just go to another part
of the house and lock the door. We have date nights, absolutely, you
have to if you have children! Sometimes we go out, but we both miss the
kids so we don’t like to go far.”

On Shiloh’s style:

“It’s not my choice. I have a very strong
willed four-year-old girl who tells me what she wants to wear and I let
her be who she is. People look at kids and think they should wear
certain types of clothes; I think children should wear what they want
and express themselves, so we give them different options of things.
Zahara dresses very much like a girl, very pink and flowery, very
feminine. Shiloh cried and said, ‘Please cut my hair off, I don’t want
to have long hair.’ I’m not going to leave it long because somebody
thinks I should,” she says “I want to do what’s in her head and what’s
in her heart is to dress like that. I think it’s beautiful.”

On meeting Brad during Mr. and Mrs. Smith:

“It didn’t begin
on the film set; we became friends on the film set, but it began after.
And at a certain age, having gone through enough experiences, I think
you know. It wasn’t courageous, it was more comforting to have found my
family.”

On learning from her kids:

“They’re so knowledgeable, so
self-aware, gracious. And they’re all different. One of them is a
natural leader and has this kind of strength, and one of them has
extraordinary grace and elegance and femininity that I didn’t realize
you could be born with. Like every mother, I’m learning patience and all
these wonderful things from them and I’m just so curious to see who
they’re going to be when they get older.”

Angelina Jolie Celebrates Son’s Birthday at Go Kart Track

The latest celeb news has top actress and star of recent movie Salt Angelina Jolie celebrating her son Maddox’s ninth birthday with a birthday party at Go Kart World in Carson, California. Jolie also recently told The Daily Telegraph that her family “is both my strength and my weakness.”

Mother of six and celebrity fashion trend maker Jolie, who is raising the children with Brad Pitt, told the Telegraph her kids make her “feel like the most important person in the world.” She also said she loves being able to live in different places around the world.

But her son’s birthday party couldn’t have been more All-American, with Maddox, his siblings and friends eating cake and pizza and zooming around the Mini Indy Track in Go Karts. Asked how she feels about Maddox getting his driver’s license for real in a few years, Jolie responded, “I’m not ready for any of it.”

Vans Go Gaga Gaga For “Yo Gabba Gabba”

Vans is reportedly launching a shoe collection that will be perfect for children and toddlers. The California-based brand will be designing a shoe line that features the popular characters from Nick Jr.’s “Yo Gabba Gabba” — Muno, Foofa, Brobee, Toodee and Plex. According to “Women’s Wear Daily,” the new collection will come out in November just in time for the holiday season. Prices will range from $32 to $45.

James Straker is a main-stay in the Brisbane music/ tattoo/ anything kitsch and cool scene. Infact we’d have to say, he’s a pop culture icon in our horse n cart town. James knows everyone and anyone- from the young emo cuties in the mall to the burlesque strippers at Love and Rockets, graf writers, musos, freaks and geeks- and even calls celebs like Jess from the Veronicas and Fat Mike from NOFX his mates….

“I owned a bar/restaurant called the Alibi Room in Brisbane Australia. I used to run a club called Monsterland, i also did Monster Joe’s and the Depot. had a TV pilot for MTV once. I have lots of tattoos and plans for many more. I played in a band called Roshambo. A really long while ago I played in a band called the Melniks. A long while ago, I managed bands.I have pretty severe ADD.I have a motorbike, two pushbikes and around 30 tattoos.I have fucked up more things than i can probably count…but havent actually died yet, so it cant be all bad can it?

Well can you tell me what brizo bands you were in?

I was in the very first incarnation of Custard called Custard Gun. I only lasted four shows..I got a phone call from David the singer, saying, “we are having band practice tomorrow. You dont have to come…” It broke my heart at the age of 16…I then joined The Melniks for a bunch of years…then played for around ten years in Roshambo.

Your fave gig you ever went to?

Can i have a top three?? Dinosaur jr, Magic dirt and The Melniks at festival hall in brisbane..maybe 1995 i think??? My favourite overseas band, my favourite australian band and my band all on the stage where The Beatles played..pretty fucking cool.

The Bronx and Mariachi el bronx…Just a magical life changing night of music.Every person who plays in a band should watch The Bronx live, just fucking incredible.

NOFX – thebarton theatre, adelaide. I got to play “the decline” live onstage with NOFX, one of my favourite bands of all time.

What you love about pop culture…

Wow, that’s an essay answer right there. I love how disposable pop culture is, and how it manages to become a part of human history. I used to run a collectables store years ago and just adore how much people are into it what they collect…

You have an awesome collection of toys and kitsch stuff…Your favourite pieces???

Shogun warriors – huge fucking plastic robots from the 70s (like two feet tall) that had fists that fired off and threw ninja stars…they are from the golden age of toys that could actually hurt kids.

Smash em up derby cars – pull zip powered destruction cars that came with ramps so you could make them jump through the air, hit each other and explode!

AT AT – the big four legged walkers from “the empire strikes back”

N64 – I know it’s a computer game console but im calling it a toy as well…I will never ever ever ever get tired of Golden Eye or Mario Karts on this machine.

Paper Planes – I know it’s not really a toy, but I play with them and make them and once filmed one flying for almost four minutes..I threw it off the top of a high rise hotel at the gold coast.

You have a gorgeous daughter who is almost an accessory with you when you’re out around the city/ valley. Hell Yeah even photographed you and her for a shoot in Issue 2. Frankie Trouble- what’s behind her name?

Yeah i wanted to give her a name that would let her know she didnt have to be the same as other kids, but at the same time calling her “trouble” as a first name would be akin to child abuse. I also really like guys names for girls..she was either going to be Frankie or Max.

Tell us about your love of tattoos…

I have really severe adhd and I pretty much wake up every morning and go “hey check out my tattoos…awesome” but if I had to name a favourite it would probably be my jar jar binks tattoo which is a work in progress by Link or my “knuckles” knuckle tattoos by Loz at Seventh Circle. The Jar Jar just shits people to tears and that’s funny in itself and the “knuckles” got onto ‘lol tatz’ which made me proud. Probably not as proud as my mum was…..

What’s up with the Airwalk tattoo??

It’s a big airwalk logo on my lower back..when link first started allstar tattoo we were trying to work out ways of getting free pubicity. i was sitting talking with the marketing manager of airwalk and she was “it would be awesome if we could find some idiot to get an airwalk tattoo” and i just watched my hand go up “i am your idiot”. It ended up being a full page ad in a bunch of sports/surf/skate mags..it was pretty cool. I’m not a really shirt-off guy so it’s not like anyone even sees it. I also have a Ralph magazine logo but that’s another story..

Tell us 3 things that make you go hell yeah?

Hanging out with my daughter, shooting guns with Averil and drag racing my motorbike with Dr Danger.

So what James owes some people money, is crazy and he’s one of those mates I wouldn’t wanna date although one Hell Yeah BFF has- he is a bloody interesting dude, always up for fun, positive and supportive of the creative arts and drums to his own beat- and for that James, we salute you!

Anna Wintour Protests Miss Lily Jamaican Restaurant

We never thought Anna Wintour loved eating, but it turns out she’s really opposed to Jamaican food.

Such was evidenced by her relentless rallying against new Jamaican eatery Miss Lily last night at a Community Board 2 committee meeting.

With her son in tow, she and about 100 others voted against the new West Village establishment, with a verdict to be determined in the days to come.

According to the New York Daily News, “Wintour and others claim the joint will be noisy, attract dangerous elements, and create a traffic nightmare.”

Wintour herself took the opportunity to speak out: “I am completely concerned. This is a unique historic neighborhood. I’m also concerned for the safety of the kids here. I would like everyone who wants to vote against this project to raise their hand.”

The eatery is owned by Serge Becker, the man behind trendy hot-spots such as The Box and La Esquina. While reps behind Miss Lily claim it will be a “restaurant, not a club”, Wintour’s son Charlie begs to differ.

“I don’t care if you call it a restaurant. No Restaurant stays open until 2 am,” he affirmed.

VIDEO: MGMT Releases ‘Kids’ Video

After six years, MGMT finally released a video of the first song they ever wrote (back in February of 2003). They reported through their Myspace:

”The idea for the video was born about a year ago, at a mock-Italian cafe on Ninth Avenue in bustling Manhattan. We are both animated and stoked to reveal at this time that we once again worked with director Ray Tintori, someone who’s known this song since it’s inception. “Kids” has proven to be some kind of monster with a life of its own, both an albatross and a plate of mac and cheese with fake bacon (Annie’s), and the process of creating this video was nearly as convoluted and veiny as the general style of this here letter of introduction.”

They also claimed that no children were harmed in the making of this video, but I might have to disagree. The entire video I felt so bad for that little boy, who spent almost all of the non-animated half of the video crying. Other than that, it’s an interesting video.

An insanely creative and disjointed mini-epic, worthy of being called a film and not just a commercial. This was made to sell children’s clothes?! The surreal montage borrows ideas and styles from Dr. Seuss, J.K. Rowling, Jules Verne, Terry Gilliam and H.R. Pufnstuf-era Sid and Marty Kroft, to name a few. But the clip surpasses the sum of its inspirations and scores because it accurately captures—as near as my ancient brain can recall—the fantasy worlds inside kids’ heads.
