And New York Fashion Week is busting at the seams with them. We’re talking about boobs. Once relegated to the awkward nip slip, now the tits forward march dominates catwalk, and we love the sheer audacity. These are looks that may remind your man how sexy you can look in that see-thru floor length Yigal Azrouël, if only he buys it for you. Share your desire to replicate these runway looks at home alone with him, then layer into them when you step out in the big bad sadly non-nudist world. Because while you can’t see tits on the radio, you can see them on the runway. Happy Valentine’s Day.

Let’s Tarantino the concert backwards for you:

Before bringing the house down with a Drops of Jupiter encore finale, Train’s vocal virtuoso Patrick Monahan walked singing through the crowd with a mic and a security guard, giving hugs and spreading love to Marry Me. Before that, he brought the audience to a hush as he sang a cappella, sans microphone, turning Webster Hall into a true theater. With Soul Sister came the involuntary sing along, and Meet Virginia struck a deep chord toward the start. In betwixt all of this, he called up eight young ladies up to be the Trainettes, making them rockstars for a moment. Needless to say, their new single Save me, San Francisco drove the audience wild, like every one of their singles that get stuck in our heads indefinitely.

<img

Down in her core she is a songwriter with a nostalgic soul. Her new album took her around the country to write with some of the greatest living songwriters like Bob Dylan, Carole King, Burt Bacharach, Carly Simon and many others. What was gained is a young songstress now evolving with the wisdom of the legends of our time. There were notes of those greats in the atmosphere as she serenaded the audience on the ivory keys.

Treetop Flyers haunted the audience with tickling guitar riffs and voices smooth as honey. Chaps from England have a way with music.

<img

We love to love and love to hate and do both pretty indiscriminately. After an impromptu poll around l’office, we came up with this list of grievances and gratitudes regarding Fashion Week.

Lovefest

1. Free drinks. Every liquor company and their alcoholic grandmother jumps at the chance to booze up the myriad parties offered during the week. It’s so easy to get hammered with only a few singles in your pocket — for the obliging bartender who basically holds the fate of your night in their clammy little hands. A tip goes a long way…that’s what she said.

2. Networking. As “fashion people,” we some times get to feeling like carnie folk — those weird kids everyone looks at with a mix of puzzlement and disdain. So it’s inspiring to meet other freaks and weirdos who are as unafraid of a statement headpiece and are also unabashedly fabulous. That and you never know from where or whom your next job opportunity may come.

3. So close and yet so far. Any one can buy a magazine and see the latest campaigns or editorials, but being able to see a designer’s collection relatively up close and personal is an unmatched experience. It gives the whole fashion thing a realness, a tangibility, that is impossible to gain from a few glossy pages.

4. Chance encounters. I saw Anna Wintour for the first time ever. It’s always been a badly kept secret of mine to see the Queen — so many of my friends have and I felt left out of the loop. Then on my way to Kimberly Ovitz‘s presentation, there she was — just a few feet from me. Cross one thing off my bucket list. Hopefully next season I’ll get to lunch with André Leon Talley and get high with Tavi.

5. Dressing up in your love. Each day is your own personal fashion show. Laboring over the right look is given extra weight with the slew of bloggers, photogs and paparazzi hunkered down outside Lincoln Center ready to snap your photo if you catch their fancy. When going to work, you…better….werq.

Haterade

1. Poseurs. There are people who love fashion and are content with standing in the back of a fashion show — they’re just happy to be there. Seeing a fashion show in person may be a dream come true or seeing a particular show may be a source of inspiration. Then there are those people who just want to be seen. Which is fine…but take your shitshow to the after party and give the rest of us some space.

2. Standing in lines. There’s a lot of entitlement on both sides of the velvet rope. I, personally, don’t do lines unless they’re presented to me on a clean, flat surface with pre-rolled Franklin. But I’m a nobody — a fabulous nobody, yes — and will stand if and only if I must. Which gets me to…

3. Attitude at the door. This is where the entitlement crosses lines. I’m sure doormen get their share of attitude from purported somebodies and to even the score they turn it right back onto unsuspecting nobodies, like myself. But a party is a party, a show is a show, it’s not life or death. Would it be too much to ask for a little courtesy? Oh, right, it would, because we’re in New York. Nevermind.

4. Transportation. Between being stuck in traffic while cabbing it from X to Z, or being stuck underground in the subway between A and D, there’s no winning when it comes to getting around the city during Fashion Week. Bitches be stealing your cabs, cab drivers openly ignore you and the subway system shuts down at the mere whisper of a storm. Some times it’s best to strap up those Giuseppe Zanottis and just hoof it.

5. The bathrooms at Lincoln Center. Maybe we are carnie folk after all since the bathrooms at Lincoln Center are basically Porta-Potties with a curtain thrown over the door. Try keeping your Prada from touching the floor while between shows.

Anatomy of a Handbag

FASHION

21men

Alexandre Herchcovitch

anna sui

christian siriano

christian siriano for payless

daily front row

Dennis Basso

Diesel

dots

forever 21

gucci

H and M

interview magazine

ivana helsinki

kenneth cole

Kimberly Ovitz

L.A.M.B.

lanvin

LF

Louis Vuitton

Louise manna

love brigade

MAC cosmetics

malan breton

marc by marc jacobs

Marc Jacobs

maybelline

milani cosmetics

mirabella

new york fashion week

new york fashion week fall 2011

patricia field

paul steiger

qq magazine

Ray Ban

rebecca minkoff

richie rich

Robert Verdi @robertverdi

rod stewart

Sephora

Son Jung Wan

timo weiland

topshop

vman magazine

walter steiger

women's wear daily

ysl
<guid

My brand spankin’ new Macbook pro, that I would have died without. Frequented that AOL StyleList blogger’s haven with it on the regs.

2. Multiple sparkly Milani nail polish. I did my nails everywhere, painting over layers to change up the colors constantly. There was a rotating slew of colors that cycled through the bag this week.

3. Lipsticks: Illamasqua: The Box (rouge), YSL fucsia, Iman (Pat Field‘s) Jaguar

4. Business cards. Gave out about 75, received at least as many.
5. Several WWDs and Daily Front Rows. I do admit I love reading the Daily.
6. Tickets. Many. Some I’ve disposed of, some made it. Some standing, some seats. None actually with my name on it.
7. Various runs of show. Ones that have lingered in my bag: Timo Weiland, Anna Sui, Dennis Basso, Alexandre Herchcovitch.
8. ESSENTIAL: Blackberry. Can’t believe it took me this long to talk about it. Maybe because I’ve done so much damage on it that it actually just broke. Fashion Week broke my phone…. now…. iPhone?
9. Because that’s not an iPhone, that’s an iPod touch and it’s been keeping me cat walking myself from place to place.
10. Biggie camera. I spent 3 years, that’s 6 seasons in the PIT with this guy. Not this year. Now I just got to use it on celebs backstage, at presentations and the like.
11. WIRES. OMG. My bag was like a radio shack. Heaven forbid I should be without a charge.
12. Small purse. Vintage. Used it when I stashed the big lady mama at the after party coat checks.
13. Wallet. Duh.
14. Deck of cards? The last free gift to remain in this bag. They’re usually the first to go when I get home.
15. Voice recorder, which I ditched for my Blackberry video camera.
16. Pashmina – much lighter than a laptop case. I didn’t wear it, my MacBook did.
17. Vintage Korean flower cardi I wore yesterday. I took it off when the world got mild.
18. Urban Zen literature – got my reikis healed (?) in the AmEx Skybox. Still confused about the process, but I felt great after.
19. My handy dandy notebook. All of my show notes are in this little thing.
20. Napkin from Timo Weiland’s after party on which Paul Steiger (as in Walter‘s son) drew shoes for me. I’m going to the press sample sale today! <img

Running around to and from fashion shows, always one catlike stride away from death — sometimes I feel like I’m living in a movie’s makeover montage. But it can also get extremely tiresome; your feet start berating you for standing in lines for hours and standing in the very back row trying to see over a garish but still absolutely fabulous hat; your confidence, self-esteem and patience are tested as you try to maneuver through the crowds. You start to question why you do it, why bother? Then you see a show that just reaffirms everything. And your feet be damned, your ego bruised as it may be, it’s kind of worth it after all. Away from the tents, Kimberly Ovitz showed her incredible Fall 2011 collection and reaffirmed my love for fashion.

As I was approaching the Pace Gallery on the super west side of Manhattan, I saw some commotion — large men in black suits ushering out what appeared to be a very important someone. Then I saw the bob and my heart fell onto the sidewalk. She was gone before I could even respond to what had just happened, but I saw her. She turned and looked in my general direction. I saw Anna Wintour and I’m somehow still alive. I thought that would be the highlight of my day. I walked into the Pace Gallery and waited.

14 girls strutted out, their mouths slashed with neon yellow, their hair and half their face netted. They walked around the giant black circle that sits dead center of the gallery then stood in circular silence. After a few flashbulbs and a few shared glances mired in confusion, everyone began moving around the models — this was the show. By having the audience move of their own volition, the show was truly about the clothes. And to their credit, the models stood silently and still for an hour, though every ten minutes two would step out and rotate.

The clothes were like the presentation, simple but brilliant. Inspired by modernist architecture and her taste for adventure, Ovitz’s woman seemed to step out of a post-Apocalyptic Utopia. Possessing a beautiful severity, the looks came predominantly in grey, black or white, though neon yellow reappeared in various forms — as in a black stretch jacquard dress with neon yellow embroidery — lending a hint of radioactivity.

Slouchy tops, draping, jersey pieces and column dresses are having a moment. I’ve seen them all crop up again and again over the last few days but Kimberly Ovitz has done it the best so far. Though those themes came off as very 90s at other shows, they were futuristic here: a sheer black column paired with a slouchy black cardigan was chicly dramatic; a grey, heavily draped cardigan gathered at the waist with grey and neon leggings created a beautiful silhouette; and several jersey pieces were embellished with graphic heat transfer prints.

The collection was more than just a presentation but an experience. I left the Pace Gallery feeling tired, because I haven’t not been tired in ages, but also inspired. This is what fashion is about for me. At its best it is wearable art, a testament to a designer’s talents and vision. So a gallery was the most appropriate place for Kimberly Ovitz. I’m convinced now that Anna had come down from on high to bestow her blessing.

Tops that "Pack a Punch"

BACKSTAGE

Kimberly Ovitz

With an overall simple aesthetic, the styling of Kimberly Ovitz’s Spring 2009 collection really brings her season looks together. I had the opportunity to get up close and personal with a few of Ovitz’s items last month, and I assure you, the quality makes up for the simplicity. The pieces are much like those you would see at Oak, some slouchy, some sleek, some intricately cut and some basic. I am loving the elegant cuffed, pocket bearing shorts, the double-breasted short suit and the versatile tie jacket dress. With layered accessories, the pieces can can easily act as the foundation for the perfect outfit. Oh, and just wait until you see Ovitz’s fall collection! I’ll post the photos once the press kit becomes available!
<p
