In the post-millennial pop culture landscape, there is one name that stands a stiletto taller than the rest: Beyoncé. From her teenage years as a Child of Destiny to her ascension to full-on divahood, Bey has proven herself the 21st century’s answer to Diana Ross. There are numerous parallels one can make between the two — outdiva-ing their respective girl groups (The Supremes:Destiny’s Child), award-nominated forays into film (1972 Oscar nom for Lady Sings the Blues:2009 Razzies nom for Obsessed) and an immensely successful crossover appeal masterminded by a manipulative father figure (Berry Gordy:Jay-Z). Oh yeah, and they’re both also style icons. Mrs. Carter has paid homage to Ms. Ross many times throughout her career while etching out her own sequined place in fashion. What better way to chart her style evolution than a good, ole-fashioned Videography?

"Work It Out" (2002) Beyoncé's love for the 70s and giant hair was evident from her first single and video as a solo artist. Channeling her Foxy Cleopatra character from that Citizen Kane of shitty sequels, Austin Powers in Goldmember, Bey sported a sequined shift and her never-again-seen afro.

"Crazy in Love" (2003) Bey announced her arrival to superstardom with "Crazy in Love"'s thunderous horns and her birth as a fashion icon with a series of outfits -- such as the always appropriate fur coat and a bikini -- as well as some serious posing.

"Me, Myself and I" (2004) Could always use more Bey in a bob.

"Naughty Girl" (2004) The song itself features an interpolation of Donna Summer's "Love to Love You Baby" and combined with a very Diana-esque fur shawl and a little nod to Bob Fosse's choreography -- something she would mine time and time again -- Beyoncé was getting in touch with her inner Studio 54 ...by way of the Harlem Renaissance.

"Upgrade U" (2007) While talking a mean fashion game, Bey dons an even meaner braid.

"Kitty Kat" (2007) Though the video for "Kitty Kat" was only a minute long and served really as an intro to "Green Light," how the hell can we not talk about this makeup? Following the theme of the song, Beyoncé also wears a leopard-print catsuit. It's called commitment.

"Get Me Bodied" (2007) An homage to Bob Fosse's Sweet Charity, Bey sports another memorable pony and is joined by former Destiny's Children Michelle Williams and Kelly Rowland -- and -- beginning to step out of her sister's ginormous shadow -- Solange as they enter a party the only way acceptable: like a bunch of drag queens.

"Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It" (2008) The leotard worn 'round the world. Who knew such a simple concept would be the watershed moment in Beyoncé's career? Inspired once again by Fosse -- this time "Mexican Breakfast" -- but with the added touch of a Lorraine Schwartz robotic titanium glove. If Gwen Verdon had had that...let's just say Liza wouldn't be alive today.

"Diva" (2008) Just in case there were any lingering doubts, Beyoncé is a fucking diva. But for anyone questioning her female hustler status, Bey pulled some diva antics like blowing up a car of mannequins and wearing the hell out of some Gareth Pugh and vintage Thierry Mugler. Sasha Fierce was not playing around.

"Video Phone" (2009) By this point in her career, Bey had really stepped up her sartorial game, eschewing mom Tina Knowles' House of Dereon creations for haute couture. And I think we all know fellow pop queen Lady Gaga may have had a little something to do with that. The two paired up for "Video Phone" then got all Thelma & Louise for Gaga's similarly-titled "Telephone."

"Why Don't You Love Me" (2010) Betty Page met Betty Draper in the martini-swilling, chain-smoking, mascara-running incarnation of B.B. Homemaker. Foxy Cleopatra she certainly is not. Shazam!

"Run the World (Girls)" (2011) Beyoncé's style evolution pretty much peaked when she decided to wear Givenchy Haute Couture while brandishing two jackals on a leash. You don't go up from there, I'm sorry. Alexander McQueen dress and thigh-high boots, a Giuseppe Zanotti harness, an incredible disco-ball of a Gareth Pugh dress and heels, a Jean Paul Gaultier couture gown, an Emilio Pucci dress. In Beyonce's post-Apocalyptic world, haute couture is the only armor you'll need.

Though she ‘s now belting in that great sold out concert hall in the sky, Whitney Houston left behind a catalog of classic tunes that redefined what it means to sang. Visually, her model good looks were a hit with the MTV crowd and as a result Whitney was a huge crossover success — picking up the torch passed to her by godmother and Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin. Throughout the 90s Whitney made a series of comebacks, effectively earning her diva stripes and also some of the biggest hits of her career. Her output was more erratic in the 00s, but she at least had one last hit with the Alicia Keys-penned “Million Dollar Bill.” While we may mourn Whitney Houston’s untimely death, we’ll continue to dance, emphatically point and lip-sync for our lives to her timeless music.

Hands down my favorite Houston hairstyle, Whitney's smart and sassy flip was perfect for the dominatrix look she's shutting down.

Remember when Madonna was the coolest bitch on the face of the planet? It was some time around 1983 through 1990. During that time Madonna revolutionized the music video and set the bar for the modern pop diva. Through a series of reinventions, Madge inspired and disseminated trends, influenced a generation of women and put out some seriously great music. That’s not to say she stopped doing that after 1990, but that was by far her greatest artistic and stylistic period. Of course, being the cultural force she is, Madonna kept going and kept pushing boundaries — all the while blurring the lines between fashion and music so that today it’s unimaginable conceiving one without the other. So while it’s great to go googoo over Gaga, here’s what made (and still — when she feels like it) makes Madonna the coolest bitch on the face of the planet.

As soon as Madonna high-kicked her way onto MTV, a style icon was born. Girls everywhere started emulating her look: the lace gloves, the dangly earrings, the armful of bangles, the giant Ray-Bans, the hair bow and even the mole which comes and goes as it pleases over the years.

Even though well into her hundreds, Madge is still known today as the Material Girl thanks in part to this iconic clip in which she donned her best Marilyn-Monroe-in-Gentlemen-Prefer-Blonds drag and cooed the mantra of the Reagan 80s.

Now sporting a cropped do, Madonna innovated the no-pants look so popular nowadays with, oh, every single poptart -- from Lady Gaga to Beyoncé to Rihanna. But make no bones about it, Madge was going sans pants while those ladies were still pantless in diapers.

Madonna went back to her roots with this one -- literally. She's been a blond for most of her celebrity life so it's easy to forget that Madonna Louise Veronica Ciccone is -- like most blonds -- really a brunette.

Directed by The Social Network's David Fincher, Madonna pays tribute to the classic 1927 silent film Metropolis and the gender-bending glamour of Marlene Dietrich with the most expensive video made at the time at a cost of $5 million. An epic by all means, the video has been more or less blatantly copied by both Christina Aguilera and Gaga. But the original still stands head and shoulder pads above the rest.

Madge continued her magnificent obsession with old Hollywood in this, her greatest sartorial achievement to date. "Vogue" was Madonna's love letter to 30s and 40s glamour -- "Greta Garbo and Monroe, Dietrich and Dimaggio" -- all wrapped up chicly in the voguing trend brought to light by the classic documentary Paris Is Burning. Every thing about this video and every look in it is absolutely flawless -- particularly this blouse giving the illusion of being sheer and the Veronica Lake wave she sports intermittently throughout.

Directed by fashion photographer Fabien Baron and featuring a cameo from 90s music video staple Naomi Campbell, "Erotica" was Madonna's 2nd video banned from MTV after "Justify My Love" two years prior. But all controversy aside, have you ever seen a more chic dominatrix? Bonus points for the gold tooth.

Madonna really classed it up for this video and for good reason. At the time she was lobbying to play the role of Eva Perón in Evita, which of course she subsequently got. Is it any wonder, what with her perfectly painted pout, elbow-length opera gloves and the pièce de résistance -- that stunning veil -- that Argentina would want to cry for her?

Then of course that class went flying out the window. Donning a catsuit and cornrows, Madonna literally and figuratively said "fuck you" to all of her critics. Over a decade later, Xtina wore a very similar look in "Not Myself Tonight," but one good catsuit deserves another.

After a hiatus that saw the birth of the future messiah known as Lourdes Leon, Madonna came roaring back with "Frozen." Wearing beautifully gothic gowns by a then-unknown Olivier Theyskens, Madonna heralded yet another reinvention: that of the Eastern-enlightened earth mother. Who knew the Kabbalah thing would last this long?

Madonna really decided to pimp herself out for "Music" -- white fur coat, white jumpsuit and enough jewelry to make even the balling-est rapper blanch. With Madonna, you either go bling or you go home.

Inching ever closer to the half century mark, Madonna showed no signs of slowing down and stripped off her pants once again to show the kids how it's done. Sporting a deliciously retro leotard under a wrap blouse and Farrah Fawcet's iconic do, the Material Girl proved that some things just get better with age.

Videography charts an artist’s fashion evolution through their music videos. First up, her name’s not Baby, it’s Janet. Ms. Jackson if you’re nasty. Janet had a string of classic hits and equally classic videos throughout the 80s, 90s and early 00s before being sidetracked by Nipplegate. But not even the sun medallion seen round the world could keep the youngest member of the Jackson clan down and out for too long. Over the past 30 years, Janet has made an indelible impact on the pop culture landscape through her genre-bending music, groundbreaking videos and cutting-edge style.

"Nasty" (1986) When she first declared Control in 1986 -- control of what she says, control of what she does -- Janet was only 19 and her conservative style may have belied her years. But make no mistake, she wasn't a prude. She and her gal pals -- including a young Paula Abdul -- just wanted some goddamned respect.

"When I Think of You" (1986) The hair got bigger and the outfits got wilder with Jackson's first #1 hit, though at the time Janet was probably hanging her head if not in sartorial shame, then from the sheer weight of all that teased out hair.

"Rhythm Nation" (1989) Janet got serious and soldierly with 1989's Rhythm Nation 1814, her blockbuster album that spawned a record 7 top 5 hits. Befitting the theme of a unified nation under the groove, Janet brought out the epaulets, unfrizzed the hair and pulled that pony through her baseball cap for some dance-army realness.

"Love Will Never Do (Without You)" (1990) Janet reinvented herself as a sex symbol thanks to famed fashion photographer Herb Ritts. With a brown wig in a classic updo, a black halter top and ripped blue jeans, Ms. Jackson kept it beautifully simple and opened the 90s on a sexy but chic high note.

"If" (1993) Once Janet flashed her midriff there was no going back. As possessor of the most famous bellybutton of the 90s, Janet wore a strikingly similar outfit in "That's the Way Love Goes," which features a young Jennifer Lopez before she began her long love affair with eyebrow contouring. This video is notable, of course, for what is hands down the greatest dance break of all time.

"You Want This" (1994) After gallivanting about with that hoodlum Tupac Shakur in 1993's Poetic Justice, Janet got in touch with her inner Banjee girl -- donning dookie braids, gold hoops and a whole lot of attitude.

"Scream" (1995) Though she was probably wearing less foundation than big brother Michael -- may he rest -- Janet's gorgeous smokey eye (courtesy of legendary makeup artist Kevyn Aucoin -- may he rest) steals the $7 million show. That's right this video cost $7 million, making "Scream" the most expensive music video to date. And for good reason, this was the first and only time the brother and sister have shared screen time. Sidenote, MJ was so impressed with Aucoin's work the King of Pop wanted him to be his full-time make up artist, but perhaps noting how much time that would actually entail, Aucoin declined.

"Got 'til It's Gone" (1997) Almost 15 years before Rihanna saw red, Janet rocked the flaming fro for her The Velvet Rope album. Featuring supermodel Alek Wek, "Got 'til It's Gone" channels 70s-era South Africa during apartheid with Janet presiding as a funky-haired lounge singer to a club of stylish folks dressed in a mix of tribal prints and vintage threads.

"I Get Lonely" (1998) Janet had explored masculine dressing in 1989's "Alright" in which she donned a zoot suit and hoofed it with Cab Calloway, but here she successfully plays with both the masculine and feminine...right before tearing off her tie and sequined corset and ripping her shirt open to bare her famous breasts in the video's thrilling conclusion.

"What's It Gonna Be?!" (1999) Another high-priced, futuristic video, this time Janet joined Busta Rhymes for her most avant garde look to date: we're talking leather from head to toe, laced-up thigh-high boots, a towering crown of weave, an impossibly long train, foot-long eyelashes, a black lip and the real kicker -- nails pierced with gold rings. "Make Me" (2009) The style in this video sort of takes all of Janet's past hits and squeezes them all together: a fedora à la "I Get Lonely"; a kimono top that wouldn't be out of place in "Doesn't Really Matter"; however Janet left the 80s shoulder pads at home in favor of a sleek metallic bold shoulder -- the only shoulder worth wearing. Her 19th and so far last #1 dance hit, my fingers are crossed we have more Janet Jackson music and visuals to make us move in the coming future.

Nicola Formichetti Launching His Own High-Tech High Fashion Line

Always one to push the boundaries of fashion — whether in his role as creative director of Mugler, as stylist for Lady Gaga, or fashion director at Vogue Hommes Japan — for his own label Nicola Formichetti wants to take fashion into the digital age, incorporating technology in ways it’s never been used before.

“It’ll be very digitally oriented and high-tech,” the designer said of his line, christened Formichetti. Rather than debuting each season during fashion week, Formichetti will launch online some time in 2013, independent of seasons. “We’ve been working with the same fabrics, the same techniques for hundreds of years. That’s all great, but we need something new.”

Formichetti is working with an undisclosed technology company to create clothes that could possibly use solar power to charge the wearer’s phone and new fabrics and materials that could mold to a person’s body — “Why do you have to have a zipper when you can have a jacket that’s molded to your body?”

After years of devoting himself to various projects, Formichetti is finally devoting some time to himself. “This year I wanted to focus on my own dream. Being a stylist, you always hide behind a brand, but because of Gaga and Mugler, I needed to come out onto the scene. I had to embrace it.” [WWD]

Then again…it’s Men in Black 3. The likelihood of any award getting thrown at it that isn’t a Razzie is slim to none, but Gaga joins Tim Burton and fellow pop tart Justin Bieber on an alien surveillance board.

Former Pussycat Doll Nicole Sherzinger is also in MiB3…and she’s holding a cake.

“I am surprised that Lady Gaga said yes,” said director Barry Sonnefeld. ”The challenge is getting celebrities that are famous, will give you permission and faces who audiences won’t be like, ‘Who’s that guy?’ in 10 years time.”

Well then, good choice leaving it to the Bieber since he’ll be around forever.

It’s going to be a haute year on the international pop superstar tour circuit. While Madonna will be wearing Jean Paul Gaultier and Givenchy by Riccardo Tisci on her upcoming MDNA tour, her monstrous mini-me Lady Gaga has turned to Giorgio Armani for her Born This Way Ball tour, kicking off April 27 in Seoul, Korea.

“Collaborating with Lady Gaga is always an exciting experience for me,” the legendary designer said. “I admire the way she uses fashion as a scenic element and as a means to build a character. She is an artist of many talents and great intelligence.”

Gaga’s custom costumes come complete with gloves with mirrored nails, a black bodice covered in Plexiglas guitars, a boat-load of studs, spikes, latex and Swarovski crystals — it’s called show business for a reason, kids — and of course, nary a pant.

Designer Daily: Zana Bayne

We’ve got the Friday night special in the form of leather mistress Zana Bayne. Self-taught in the craft, she has the kind of design eye that brings the kink to this side of chic. She has harnessed the power of Lady Gaga and Prabal Gurung in the form of videos and ongoing collaborations. She’s powerful. This kickass Brooklynite applied her study of conceptual art to leather and the body, and one of the main thoughts it has me pondering (aside from historical connotations of leather in S&M, objectification of the human body, feminist ideals, etcetera) is how late is Patricia Field open? I might just pick one up tonight.

The leather harness Lady Gaga writhed around in during the Yoü and I video was made by the hands of Zana Bayne. Badass. Paws up.

Prabal Gurung collaborated this season on a series of belts and harnesses that connect waist to the neck.

Tommy Hilfiger Takes on American Idol

Jennifer Lopez better watch her back because American Idol is getting another dose of style when Tommy Hilfiger joins the cast as the new “image expert.”

Hilfiger will help guide each contestant to shape and define their personal styles and images because as we all know, video killed the radio star.

“If you look at what makes a star, it’s not only musical talent, it’s the complete package,” Hilfiger told WWD. “And that includes image. If you look at great superstars from Michael Jackson to Madonna and Lady Gaga and Katy Perry [Ed. note: no] today, they each have a unique style and that adds to their persona. It’s the icing on the cake.”

While the designer has outfitted many a star over the years, he won’t be confining himself to “one brand,” i.e. his own. But if a Hilfiger dress or slack makes it on the air a few times a week — so what, who cares? Sure as shootin’ not Idol, which wouldn’t mind if they started a few trends that didn’t end in yet another singing reality competition show.

First of all, I was barely aware that American Idol was still on since it ceased to exist in my mind as anything of note when future Academy Award winner Jennifer Hudson was kicked off 40 years ago — but apparently it’s the number one show in America.

Re-evaluate your priorities, America.

Second, isn’t Jennifer Lopez example enough of an “image expert” since she’s built a career on a series of looks and showstopping gowns, punctuated with the occasional romantic comedy or club banger. What can Tommy Hilfiger possibly show these contestants that J. Lo hasn’t taught, like, everyone since Selena?

Hussein Chalayan’s Light Metal Lover Palladium Revealed on the Runway

This morning, Hussein Chalayan showed Paris his mastery for Fall 2012. Known for using technological materials in his designs, like a dress that turns into a coffee table, or a dress that moves independently (which inspired one of Lady Gaga‘s Monster Ball gowns) this season he utilized the newest, lightest, strongest metal on the market: Palladium. He partnered with the International Palladium Board as part of their initiative to make the metal not only appealing for industrial, but also that of luxury. Hussein Chalayan muses on the collaboration, “It was very appealing for me to develop an idea inspired by the lightness and strength of palladium. This partnership was a very natural gravitation; I am interested in materials that are not automatically associated with clothing. This is what my work is about.”

We prefer to see them in ground-sweeping ball gowns and pretty little things the every-gay can’t just wear on the fly. So why wear tees when the sartorial world is at your fingertips? Is it the comfort? Maybe. The message across the front? Less likely. But point is, if you can afford Dior, we’d really like to see you in Rick Owens. How do you feel about celebs in t-shirts?For the record, I Googled Daphne Guinness in a t-shirt. It yielded no results.

As if we weren’t crushing on Azealia Banks enough — I mean, I almost death-dropped off my bike when “212″ came on in my spinning class yesterday (and yes, I take a spinning class) — the raptress/bad bitch decided to take up with fellow crush and superstar stylist Nicola Formichetti, who styled her latest video. Inevitably, there will be Lady Gaga comparisons, but aside from generally shutting it down, the two don’t have that much in common. Banks, however, did take a page out of the Lady’s playbook by debuting her newest track at the Mugler show in Paris. Let’s get this over with. Well, the People’s Choice Awards – or as I like to call it, “Wait, who’s that on the stage?” – were last night and Katy Perry cleaned house, winning five of the coveted (?) awards, including Favorite Female Artist, Favorite Song of the Year for “E.T.”, Favorite Music Video for “Last Night (T.G.I.F.)” and interestingly enough, Favorite TV Guest Star for her stint on How I Met Your Mother. Too bad she didn’t bother to show up. But as we all know, the People’s Choice Awards are on par with the Grammys in terms of relevance and on par with a moderately lavish bar mitzvah in terms of its ability to draw celebrities. Other big winners included Emma Stone, who was actually present to accept her awards for Favorite Movie Actress and Favorite Comedic Movie Actress and Demi Lovato who beat out pop heavyweights Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, Rihanna and Perry to win Favorite Pop Artist. Winner: Sarah Jessica Parker Her January Elle, August Vogue, and September Marie Claire covers are the 2nd or 3rd bestsellers of each mag this year.

Loser: Justin Bieber His Vanity Fair cover is the lowest selling issue since Graydon Carter took over in 1992. Rolling Stone, Teen Vogue and People similarly bombed.

Winner: Lady Gaga Mother Monster's Vogue cover was Anna Wintour's second best-selling issue, while her March Harper's Bazaar is Glenda Bailey's third top performer.

Winner: Mila Kunis A breakout year for the actress delivered GQ's biggest-selling issue from August and a 15% increase for a struggling W with her March cover. A turn on Cosmopolitan and a shared cover with Justin Timberlake on Elle in August also proved to be hits.

Loser: Justin Timberlake JT's cover with Mila might have been a hit for Elle, but his W cover with Amanda Seyfried was the mag's 2nd worst seller, while his solo cover for Esquire in October was its worst seller of the year.

Winner: Jennifer Aniston Alleged sexiest woman of all time, Aniston was also Marie Claire's top seller of the year and her November Elle is on track to be one of its biggest hits.

Loser: Michelle Williams The My Week with Marilyn star's Vogue cover and her Marie Claire cover were each mag's second and third worst-performing covers, respectively.
