Remember that time the UK banned Julia Roberts’ Lancôme ad for tryng and failing to convince us that the Oscar winning actress hadn’t been Photoshopped into oblivion? The Brits, it seems, don’t care to turn a Botoxed cheek to computer-generated enhancement; nor do the French and the Norwegians. Feminist legislators from those European superpowers — and Norway — want all digitally-altered images to be labeled to avoid giving girls the wrong impression.

It was exactly this impression that the American Medical Association wanted to protect when it passed a policy in June to “discourage the altering of photographs in a manner that could promote unrealistic expectations of appropriate body image.” But was this enough? Would that stomp the scourge of rampant Photoshop mutilation?

Enter the dashing Dr. Hany Faid, riding up on his microscope of justice, his pristine lab coat effortlessly billowing in the wind. Along with PhD student Erica Kee, Faid enlisted hundreds of people to compare before and after photos (see below) and then determine the level of digital alteration on a scale from 1-5. They then used this research to train the software to mimic human perception.

Faid hopes this tool will be used to regulate and reduce retouching. He suggests, “Models, for example, might well say, ‘I don’t want to be a 5. I want to be a 1.’” Perhaps this new breakthrough will prevent anymore unfortunate airbrush mishaps and won’t result in the complete devastation of the women’s magazine industry. [NYT]

Their mission is to help children affected by autism communicate more effectively through education, job training, and specialized activities.  The appropriately named Golden Hat collection features a blush palette, a red lipstick, and a red nail polish.  We love that the baby pink blusher has the foundation’s emblem designed on it in a shimmery gold for an extra special touch. Lancome has pledged to dedicate at least 150,000 euros (about $207k) of its sale profits to the charity.

The Pretty Woman is sitting very pretty on a cool $50 million deal with Lancôme. She’ll be guffawing all the way to the bank.

I knew absolutely nothing about Kypre, a 1935 Lancome perfume, when I scored a sealed(!) old bottle of the extrait de parfum in an online auction. The name, of course, was hinting big time that this is a chypre, but that was about that, other than the very little info I gathered here and there. The authoring nose of Kypre was Lancome founder Armand Petitjean (1884-1969) who released it the year he started the company along with four other fragrances. So it was a thrilling moment when the package arrived and I could crack it open and start playing.

My bottle is probably from the 1950s or so (based on its style and the little insert in the box listing Lancome’s address as 29 rue du Faubourg-Saint-Honoré). I was thrilled to discover the juice was very much alive, rich and sweet smelling. There’s no question this is, indeed, a chypre, as I could smell enough of the structure right away. I don’t know what else was in its top notes, but I was surprised to find out enough bergamot has survived and smelled like the remains of yesterday’s Earl Grey tea- strong and a little bitter. The rest of the scent is a lot softer. There’s a floral element that is probably a jasmine, non-indolic but a little heady even after all these years. Then comes the beautiful dry-down, a buttery leather, opulent and warm, and the oakmoss which is all velvet.

I never smelled the original Lancome Cuir, the more famous leather perfume Petitjean had created (originally named Revolte and released in 1936), only the reissue (which I love love love). The latter is a floral-leather, a bit crisp and somewhat related to Chanel Cuir de Russie (at least in its extrait version from the early 2000s. Who can keep track with all the changes and reformulations happening around us?), so I’ll have to assume the style was somewhat similar. Kypre, while definitely leathery, smells like it belongs to the school of Mitsouko, though the dry-down is very pulled-together and a lot less dramatic. The part that makes me think of Mitsouko every time I wear Kypre is a certain boozy fruitiness when the heart morphs into the base of the perfume. Maybe fruitiness is the wrong word. It feels like the softest pair of exquisite boots in a dark cognac color.

The late dry-down is a muted soapy oakmoss that would easily appeal to a modern man just as much as to a woman. That is, if said man is the kind who trolls the net searching for long forgotten perfumes.

“The first thing I thought of was that I wanted to do my signature red — my bordeaux,” the designer told WWD. “I would like to try to interpret a red lipstick that could be worn from day to night.”

The rouge color can be worn for day or night depending on the stroke in which its applied.  Adding gloss to lips after application will also change the depth and shine of the lip color.

The L'Wren Scott for Lancome collection will feather an eyeshadow quad, lipstick, lip gloss, a limited edition Lancôme's volumizing Hypnôse Drama Mascara in shimmery silver-ray and a gray nail color said to be a favorite hue in Scott's red carpet collections. The beauty collection will also come with a black rosette pochette as part of a gift with purchase.   Items will  be available online and at beauty counters in November and will retail between $14 and $42.

Though Latisse promises to grow you some more lashes, some people aren’t looking to take the risks. And for those people, it seems as though Lancome has found the answer. The secret lies in the “S” shaped brush, the wand designed to hit the center of your lashes first for extra curve and volume. Hopefully this alternative is a good solution!

I have never been a fan of Lancome’s fragrances. When searching for a new scent, I skip over this counter completely. But seeing the campaign for Lancome’s newest fragrance, Magnifique, I can’t help but wanting to try it. I’m pretty sure that has something to do with Anne Hathaway being the new face of the brand, as she can do no wrong. She looks fabulous in the ad- that dress fits her like a glove. Maybe on my next fragrance finding excursion, I’ll have to test this one out. Kudos, Lancome, for choosing a fresh enough face for me to try your old-lady perfumes!

Emanuel Ungaro, French designer known for his classy, natural and simple designs recently started a makeup collection with M.A.C. Wait a second, did I see that correctly? M.A.C, as in crazy flashy eye-makeup M.A.C? Who would have ever thought M.A.C would agree to sell pale, neutral colors of lipstick, gloss and blush? I would have expected a collaboration like this to be linked to Clinique, NARS or even Lancome. Maybe this is a sign that M.A.C is taking it down a notch, from the big and bold to the natural and simple.

Christian Louboutin is now inspiring lipstick with his famous red soles. Lancome is doing a limited-edition red lipstick and black lip gloss to match the world recognized shoes. Collection is set to launch later this year.
