Lara Stone: The Creepy and Repulsive Smoker

Picture 2Just about every model out there is a smoker (gotta curb the hunger somehow) but is it just me, or is Lara Stone one of the creepiest looking smokers out there!? I’ve seen a number of models puff away at the old cancer stick, but Stone just doesn’t make it look glamorous or sexy at all. If anything, she makes me want to hand her some whitening toothpaste and a nicotine patch.

SPREAD: Lara Stone for Vogue Paris October 2009 by Steven Klein fashion

Carine Roitfeld’s love for Lara Stone can no longer be attributed to her wispy blonde hair and ample breasts. Taking things a step further from the September cover of Vogue Paris where Roitfeld styled her with brown hair and (gasp) visible eyebrows, she is now transformed into a wide variety of stereotypes. Rave attendee, china doll, and fierce tribal leader are all present in this diverse editorial where Lara Stone becomes almost unrecognizable.

Size 10 Model Lara Stone Captivating the Runways

Size 10 Model Lara Stone Captivating the Runways fashion

Lara is also being referred to as he girl with the Brigitte Bardot looks…..okay, I can see some of that, but what I’m most excited about is, the fact that she has a “real body.” You all know what I’m talking about. The opinions and comments that I express here are not in anyway meant to offend anyone, but it is quite refreshing to see someone who can put on a dress and actually “fill it out.” I’m aware that it is the designer’s choice as to the models used to “sport their wares,” but some of the young ladies with the ribs showing and the knees that look as though they are about to snap in two if they walk too fast are a bit too thin for some of the clothes. Hats off to the designers who are using Lara in their shows! read more below from the actual article.

Every so often a truly original model emerges. Lara Stone is 25 – comparatively old in an industry where most are deemed past it by the time they reach their mid-twenties. She is a relatively curvaceous British size 10, with feet that measure a six (instead of sample size seven to eight), wispy fair hair and a noticeable gap between her two front teeth. Yet somehow it’s a mesmerising combination.

Stone’s unique look has designers and fashion editors swooning; Prada contracted her for a semi-exclusive catwalking deal (preventing any other designer from using Stone before she walked in its a/w 09 show), and French Vogue dedicated its entire February issue to her – marking the return of sultry, Brigitte Bardot-esque, womanly proportions. Born in Holland, Stone first emerged when she entered the Elite Model Look competition in 1999. She didn’t win, but the Elite judges glimpsed a flicker of potential in the 15-year-old, and agreed to sign her regardless. After several frustrating years her breakthrough finally came when she made it on to the books at IMG International, and a prestigious catwalk debut in Givenchy’s a/w 06 couture show followed.

This season has seen the renewal of contracts with Givenchy and Hugo Boss, and Stone has also been signed as the face of Jean Paul Gaultier and Jaeger – whose chief executive, Belinda Earl, is quick with praise for the star of its new campaign. ‘Lara is stylish, confident, chic, and most importantly she’s a real woman.’

Perhaps these defining qualities go some way towards explaining the fact that for a/w 09 Stone walked in no fewer than 14 ready-to-wear shows in 19 days, not to mention a further three in Paris last July, when she opened both Chanel’s and Jean Paul Gaultier’s haute couture shows. She might not fit the stereotype, but this certainly hasn’t stopped her from having the fashion world at her feet. Welcome to a season in the life of Lara Stone.

Lara’s Choice

Laras Choice fashionLara Stone might be dressed in the aesthetic of designers and stylists most of the time, but do you ever wonder what the supermodel’s personal style really is? Stone did a little sifting through the many talented designers featured on Not Just A Label to create her ultimate wish list, now available for your viewing and purchasing pleasure on The Shop. Her style? As expected, Stone has quite the array of comfortable, black garments (probably for down time in between shows and shoots) as well as some severe structure and splashes of fun orange silk and denim fur! Lara’s choice will be available now through the month of September!

Lara Stone, Edita Vikeviciute and Guinevere Van Seenus star in this 40’s inspired editorial where tanning in your bra at the park and wearing Prada’s boots in the water is totally normal. I love that stylists are actually taking the boots fishing inspired roots into consideration.

AD-DICT: Lara Stone for DSquared2’s Fall 2009 Campaign

AD DICT: Lara Stone for DSquared2s Fall 2009 Campaign fashionWhat isn’t to covet about Lara Stone? First the gal gets an entire issue of Vogue Paris all to herself, and now she has three stunning male models wrapped around her finger in DSquared2’s Fall 2009 Campaign. I can’t decide which I’d want more, but I’m leaning towards the latter.

Shot by Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott, DSquared2 designers Dean and Dan Caten were originally supposed to appear in the series of ads, but I don’t think anyone will complain about the replacements!

Daria Werbowy Is Vogue’s One and Only

Daria Werbowy Is Vogues One and Only fashion

I recall a frantic phone call back in March when a good friend of mine called to tell me he had just bumped into Daria Werbowy near St. Mark’s. Completely in awe by her beauty, he was definitely at a loss of words, a speechlessness Vogue is certainly aiming for by using Werbowy as the only editorial model in their August 2009 issue. The same “one and only” model ploy was used with Lara Stone back in February, and I must agree, that was one of their better publications. Photographed by Inez Van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin, Werbowy is going to look stunning as ever…looking forward to sharing the spreads with you!

CREEP ALERT: Karl Lagerfeld Films Porno-ish Film

CREEP ALERT: Karl Lagerfeld Films Porno ish Film fashion

I used to admire Karl Lagerfeld. That is, until he decided to film a creepy, porno prerequisite featuring Lara Stone for the house of Chanel. Maybe I’m over analyzing the film, but Stone’s youthful physique and clothing changes, in combination with Lagerfeld’s sinister accent and home-movie filming quality, make me feel all dirty watching what seems to be an ameture porno. Severely creepy. I need a shower.

SPREAD UM: Lara Stone and Morgan Freeman (???) By Bruce Weber For Vogue fashion

Bruce Weber headed down to New Orleans to shoot Lara Stone and Morgan Freeman for the latest US Vogue. I guess Freeman’s becoming a triple threat actor/voice over/model?  The concept is cool, opposites of old and young, but I can’t help but be creeped out by the photo of the two laying down laughing together.  Shout out: Stone is wearing a Barak Obama shirt in the last photo.

More Muse Models At The Met

More Muse Models At The Met fashionMonday night’s feature presentation might have been the photographs in the Model as Muse exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, but coming in close second were the muse models themselves. I’ve run into a few of these bread winners on the street, but I must admit, nothing would be more intimidating than being towered over by a glamorous, naturally gorgeous and fashionable beanpole.

I have few qualms here. Anja Rubik showed some major leg. Daria Werbowy braved the infamous Balmain shoulders. Erin Wasson rocked the androgynous look. Sasha Pivovarova went simple on the dress and crazy on the feathers. But Natalia Vodianova…she looked like an innocent Princess Peach. This is the Met Gala, not a Super Mario convention.

Thanks Who, What, Wear Daily!
