The 2012 Oscar Nominations were released today, and, as usual, I’m half way to underwhelmed. But then I began to think of the red carpet and all the praising and bashing opportunities it will bring. And since our invitations here at FashionIndie always seem to get lost in the mail, I took the liberty of putting together a 2012 Academy Awards outfit for myself. Love it or hate it in the Look of the Day.

Eye Spy Vibrant Jewel Tones: Bright Liners & How to Wear Them

It’s time to brighten your outlook, boys and girls, because winter isn’t getting any shorter. Do away with your smokey palette for once and take a turn for the rainbow. A little frightened to jump head first into bright colors? Jewel tone eyeliners are bold without being over-the-top, and they have been everywhere as of late. Here are four of our favorite hues to play with, how to wear them and what they’ll do for your eye color.

Purple eyeliner looks great on every eye color and skin tone, but is makes green eyes especially pop. Try using NARS Larger Than Life Long-Wear Eyeliner in Bourbon Street to draw on a cat eye, paired with a deep plum lipstick.

If you have dark or olive skin, rich blue/green turquoise is sure to make your eyes pop. Laura Mercier Khol Eye Pencil in Black Turquoise looks perfect with light golden tone eyeshadows and a neutral lip.

Green eyeliner makes the cool tones in blue and green eyes pop and enhances golden flecks in brown eyes. A thick emerald line is all you need - finish Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eye Liner in Moss with black mascara and a bold orange lip.

The Pain Of It All

While most of me escaped the sun’s wrath (I wear SPF on my face every day), my shoulders are approximately the same color as this Nars nail polish (and dear lord it STINGS– even two days later). I’m especially ashamed because my super-pale skin means that I’m something of a sunblock connoisseur. Anywho, everyone should be smarter than me and lather up in at least SPF 30 if you’re going to be spending a lot of time outside. Here are some of my favorites:

1. For face: Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer in SPF 30. Lightweight and evens out skin tone.

2. For body: Neutrogena – any of their dry-touch blocks for face and body are superb—lightweight and non-greasy (I happen to enjoy the 85, but it comes in less-intense SPFs too).

3. For everywhere: Dr. Hauschka – This stuff is a bit heavy, but it works (especially for us lily-pale folks) and is 100% organic.

If you do get burned, put on only pure aloe vera for the next 72 hours—any lotions, creams etc will keep the heat in your skin and make the burn worse. Or you could, you know, not be dumb and put sunblock on before you go out.
