10 Essentials Elements for (an Unseasonably Warm) New York Fashion Week

Twice a year, we at FashionIndie raid, ransack and rape our closets in an effort to put together a compelling look that will have all other fashionistas wishing they had stayed the eff home. In September, the last vestiges of summer make it slightly easier to turn it proverbially out, but February usually requires a lot of layering and the outfit often has to be cruelly covered up to stave off the ravages of winter. This New York Fashion Week, however, the winter has been suspiciously mild. Temperatures have barely dipped below freezing and nary a snow flake has dropped in weeks. So let’s just ignore our impending doom thanks to the totally buzz-killing reality of global warming and instead focus on what matters: dressing for the Tents. Here are 10 staples — 5 for the guys and 5 for the gals, but feel free to mix and match since we actively don’t subscribe to gender constructs — for NYFW.

The Trench While it's not necessarily sub-zero, it's not Miami in August either, but a trench is a coat for all seasons.

The Fur A floor-length fur coat might be a little overkill -- PETA joke! -- but if Rachel Zoe has taught us anything it's that a fur vest is not only always appropriate, it's practically mandatory.

The Man Bag While the inside of your bag may look like the dumpster behind a pharmacy, at least the outside can appear elegant...or at least coherent. Which will be more than can be said about you come the week's end.

The Clutch No one wants to be weighed down with a million bags like some homeless woman on her way to the market so why look like one? An oversized clutch is sleek and can carry anything from line sheets and gift bags to cocaine and a purse gun.

The Loafer Who needs a rough and rugged boot when a loafer says you're too much of a pimp to even care what anyone has to say?

The Closed-Toe Pump There's no snow to trudge through, so practicality can take a backseat while a stiletto takes the wheel -- but spare your toes the cold and cover up...unless you're wearing nude pantyhose. In which case, do not pass Go and do not attend NYFW.

The Spectators There's nothing like a fake pair of eyeglasses to lend a false sense of sophistication and if you're actually blind as a bat, you're already ahead of the curve. And the class.

The Shades Whether you're hiding the dark circles from too much partying and not enough sleep, or hiding from that regrettable hook-up the morning after, sunglasses are very necessary.

The Gentlefellow Even if you're not a gentleman -- and chances are if you're reading this site you're probably not -- you can play the part with a well-tailored suit.

The Stunner Have a look at the ready for anytime you want to bring the show -- whether it's a fashion show or a shitshow -- to a complete halt.

How To Dress Up That Muumuu to a Level of Appropriateness

I don’t know about you, but there is nothing like a breezy, colorful, thrifted muumuu to beat the summer heat. Unfortunately, not everyone thinks this style of dress is appropriate for nice dinners, clubbing or industry-related events. Well I’m here to prove the haters wrong – a muumuu can be dressed-up for any occasion, and I’m going to show you how.

This dress was purchased at a Goodwill somewhere in Connecticut for $4. Don’t be too jealous of the tropical fish motif because you too can find something (almost) just as nice.

1. Shoes are key when dressing up a muumuu. Make sure you’re adding at least three inches to your height. Choose something colorful and statement-making like these Elie Tahari Nyla Sandals.

2. A very expensive bag is a must when rocking a shapeless frock. People may snicker at your frugal threads until they see this Miu Miu Top Handle Bag. Your savvy, impeccable taste will shut them up immediately.

3. There’s nothing like a red bandana for summer, especially to accentuate the breezy aura of your look. No one will dare ask questions about your thrifted outfit when wearing the Boss Lady Bandana around a regal hairstyle such as the beehive or high bun.
