London
DESIGNER TO KNOW: Danielle Scutt

Danielle Scutt’s past three Spring/Summer Ready to Wear shows at London Fashion Week were different, and all absolutely amazing. I love the short skirts, the cut outs, and the crazy hair and hair pieces! This is definitely a designer worth paying attention to.

RUNWAY: Katie Eary Mens, Spring/Summer 2010

Halloween is roughly a month away, but Katie Eary started early this year at London Fashion Week with her costume-inspired show. I am going completely crazy over this, but I have a feeling I’m one of the only ones that thinks it’s cool to wear your insides on the outside. What do you think?

RUNWAY: Burberry Prorsum Spring 2010
Burberry Prorsum closed London’s 25th anniversary Fashion Week, and for good reason. I’m usually not the biggest Burberry fan, but Christopher Bailey’s Spring 2010 collection was a show-stopping, draped heaven. Classic trenches were updated with draping and ruching while dresses got shorter, more youthful and scrunchier. Yes, the Burberry classic gingham did make an appearance via several handbags, but don’t worry, it was kept a subtle minimum!

RUNWAY: House of Holland Spring 2010
Henry Holland didn’t bring anything terribly new or interesting to the copious table that is London fashion week. His House of Holland Spring 2010 collection consisted of lace, hanky-panky like bodysuits, some cute little house decal patterns, a few block-print tees and a whole lot of denim on denim. Mr. Holland, however, did not disappoint and brought back the built-in pasties made famous by a pregnant M.I.A during the 2009 Grammy Awards.

RUNWAY RUNDOWN: Bernard Chandran Fall 2009

Bernard Chandran’s AW09 collection was inspired by the ‘romance of the Far East’ which apparently translates as metallics, voluminous shapes, and graphic prints. Lame, glitter and studs in silver, gunmetal and gold reflected the stark white walls of the On|Off venue at The Science Museum…

RUNWAY RUNDOWN: Olanic Fall 2009
Played before a stage of mirrors and a video montage backdrop, Olanic’s Fall 2009 collection brought us mini-dresses, cinched waists and long black gloves in a monochromatic color palette. Once labeled as Vogue’s “ones to watch”, Olanic seems to have lost some of his luster since past seasons glory.

Giles Pays Homage to Ronald McDonald Land

Giles released this thing into the fashion world this past weekend. It appears to be a black Grimace. For those unfamiliar with the McDonald’s mythology, Grimace was a purple four armed creature known for stealing Happy Meals from starving children and then proceeding to play with their cheap third-world made toys until the parts broke off. He and the Hamburgler then used to make sweet dirty love while juiced up on chunks of 6-month old dead cow and artificially flavored french fries. Later Grimace’s two extra hands (the evil ones) were removed and he began to enjoy a relationship with ringleader Ronald. Of course, one of his hands were the source of his intellegence and we quickly became a rather idiotic character who would often be the starting point of drama in Ronald McDonald Land. Anyway, yeah, this thing looks like a black Grimace, which means it looks really, really stupid. It also kind of looks like a penis if you squint a little bit. Either way, it’s pretty dumb.

RUNWAY RUNDOWN: Paul Costelloe A/W 2009
Paul Costelloe opened London Fashion Week with a collection that incorporated muted colors and definitive shapes, a practice the designer is known for.
According to The Catwalk Queen, “Costelloe’s silhouette was chunky at the neck and shoulders, flaring out directly below to above the knee, resulting in a slightly 60s swing effect. Fabrics were primarily brocade or knit, and the colour scheme went from grey and gold through to rust, hot pink, red, metallic gold and silver, finally fading into black.”

Straight From The Runway: Agyness Deyn
London Fashion Week has brought us many unique pieces so far, and apparently Agyness Deyn thinks she is too cool to wait like the rest of the world to get them. Henry Holland’s show brought us this quirky polkadot, sheer dress that looks less than perfect on Agyness Deyn. She took this dress from looking runway chic to 90 year old woman going to church in middle America. The socks? The ugly footwear? Which one makes this look hideous? There is nothing about what Agyness is doing here that makes her look fashionable. Thanks for ruining another great piece Aggy, you aren’t really helping the fashion world anymore. IF you could just disappear that would be great.

London Jewelry Week 2008: Swarovski “Fashion Rocks”
For the past five years, Swarovski has celebrated Jewelry Week (jewelry world’s equivalent of Fashion Week) with a fantastical, collaborative runway show. This year’s designers included Erickson Beamon, Hussein Chalayan, Ana de Costa, Christopher Kane, Rodrigo Otazu, Marios Schwab and Pippa Small, among others. The cohesive element is the crystals themselves, so each designer was able to run wild with their imaginations resulting in looks that are at turns ethereal, fantastical, gothic … you name it, it was done. Although the disparate looks don’t result in the kind of clearly unified collection that a Couture or RTW strives for, it makes things just a bit more visually interesting for the viewer. Todd Lynn’s Androgynous Duds

Fashion Week London had quite a few stinkers in my opinion but there were a few of those ‘tea guzzlers’ that caught my eye and made feel all creamy inside like Oreo’s.

Todd Lynn was one of those designers. In todays fashion world, the line between masculine and feminine has been blurred, and I don’t just mean the bedazzled girly boys on the subway or the hairy chick in plaid at your local auto body repair shop. I mean a door being opened up to a whole new spectrum of tailoring and styling, giving menswear a softer line and women bolder shapes and textures.

Lynn’s designs embody that idea without rubbing it in your face. In viewing his collection, I felt like a was seeing a designer deconstruct and explore the endless possibilities of the dress suit. Good Stuff.

Chunky Men Are IN. I Proceed to Down Another Cheesecake

TheMarket tipped us off to one of London Fashion Week’s main looks. The Chunky Sweater.
At one of the most directional shows of London Fashion Week, the Man Show, chunky knits met sporty looks and some rather wacky looks.
Three new names joined Topman Design this season. First out was Kesh, a streetwear label with a mature approach to urbanwear. Wool plaid skate shorts, quilted sweatpants and a patent-sleeved baseball jacket were both saleable and cool. Next up came James Long, whose harness-like accessories have already garnered countless pages of editorial. Texture was central to the collection, with oversized curly sheepskin jackets and three-dimensional knitted stitch structures twisting their way around chunky sweaters.
Hans Christian Madsen was the last of the new names to show, with a collection inspired by naval military clothing. Knitwear was a strongpoint for Madsen – the oversized cardigans, T-shirt sweaters and textured Fair Isle patterns all highlights. A sporty element also ran through the collection. Topman Design closed the show with a collection that focused on technical fabrics, sportswear influences and layered styling for protection against the elements – the latter arriving as windcheaters, crinkled coated-nylon trousers and padded plaid shirts, a creative update for a commercial bestseller. Oversized stitch-banded knitted coats were another highlight, and the palette of burgundy, cobalt, magenta and vivid Kelly green colored the wearable winter brights. (wgsn)
