Although there is already a state law requiring condom use, the AHF’s “Safer Sex In The Adult Film Industry Act” would provide additional enforcement. Placing the act on the ballot would cost $4.4 million and city officials are looking to clarify whether the law would actually be enforceable, or if it would be pre-empted by the state law.

In the meantime, the city has already received threats of lawsuit from the adult film industry with the Free Speech Coalition supporting the industry’s success in “preventing HIV infections through its testing protocols and self-regulation.” The  AHF insists, however, that the issue is a matter of public health and that the efforts of the adult film industry and the presence of the state law don’t provide enough…protection. “I wish society was more acceptable of men wearing heels,” laments Jeff Paice, one of the queens interviewed by the Times, while in a black button down, black trousers and a pair of wedged sandals. Once upon a time, however, men could wear heels without stigma.

In 18th century France, Louis XIV often wore five-inch heels depicting miniature battle scenes. The Sun King decreed that only nobility were allowed to wear heels in red — how’s that for trademark infringement Christian Louboutin — and that no one could have heels higher than his own. Diva. Then in 1791, following the French Revolution, noted lilliputian Napoleon Bonaparte banned high heels to show equality.

For Paice, though, the options for a pump-lovin’ man leaves much to be desired. His cohorts, Coy Barton and Mark Cramer, allegedly 24 and 25, couldn’t agree more. ”I literally look at girls and think, you have so many options. You have jumpers, you have skirts, you have dresses, you have pants, you have shorts. Boys have pants and shorts. Or suits and a shirt,” Barton says, both he and Cramer dressed similarly in grey slacks, white dress shirt and tranny heel. But Barton, in his $115 Steve Maddens and Cramer in his $170 Chinese Laundry booties, don’t consider this a form of drag.

To them and to Sean Wagner, the heels are not about creating an illusion, they’re about having fun. “As far as we’re concerned, this is just bringing a look to a club — which is what you are supposed to do,” explains a bearded and bespectacled Wagner, in an eight-inch neon green pair of lace-up ankle boots — or as he refers to them, “my usual hiking shoes.” The 6’2″ Wagner is also a fan of the height the shoes give him. “I’ve bought Louis Vuitton. I’ve bought Gucci. But a lot of designers don’t go high enough for me. I found a company in Arizona that will do 15-inch heels for $3,000.” Let’s see 6’2″ plus 15″ equals…a towering tranny inferno.

Also taking the designer high-heeled road is Gregory Alexander, whose six-inch Balenciaga wooden wedges retail for $2000. That, however, is not the only price he’s paid for his shoe fetish. Last summer, while trying to jump a fence to get into a party, Alexander broke his ankle and was in a cast for four months. ”They told me I should never wear heels again, obviously,” he recounts.

But a broken ankle never keeps a lady down and by the time the NYT caught up with him, Alexander was in his Yves Saint Laurent Imperiale platform stiletto ankle boot — these L.A. gals do love an ankle boot —  skinny black jeans, a shirt and skinny tie and, of course, a motorcycle jacket, Because you gotta keep it butch. Where does the imagery for the screen-printing stem from?

It’s an extension of what we were already doing, which is traditional with a twist. We’re taking things that have already been done before and doing it a little bit better, a little bit different than people have seen them. I take iconic imagery and do it in a sort of “One Grey Day” way, which is to put a little twist on it and to get something that everybody’s familiar with, but have not seen in that form before.

You said that your name is a play on words. How did one great day become One Grey Day?

The concept for the line, tones of black, gray and white, was in place before we had a name for the line. I got me and my friends together and we were throwing around ideas. We were saying, ‘What’s the commonality that ties everything together?’ My own wardrobe, even my house, everything’s gray. I knew that gray was going to be the underlying concept through the whole collection. People ask me, “Why gray?” Everybody knows in Los Angeles, when I say, “a gray day,” they know what I mean because we have these days all the time. Even in summer. In April, the beginning of spring, you’ll wake up and everything looks gray. It’s not in a bad way, it’s just a gray day. It’s not cold outside, it’s overcast, it’s cloudy and has this grey hue over the city.

How big is your design team?

My design team right now is three people. I have 2 amazing young designers who at some time soon I’ll be able to introduce to everybody, but right now they’re working and developing their craft. I’m lucky that they’re doing it for one grey day. I have one sweater designer, one cut and sew designer, and they also are working together to develop the new part of the collection that is a hybrid between the sweaters and the cut and sew pieces. And I have an artist that does all of my images for screen-printing.

What was your Aha! moment that got this company started?

I don’t know if there was an exact “aha” moment. I know, for me, when I realized everything was going to work out was when we did the Coterie trade show in NY. We had put the collection pretty quickly and we were making the decision of whether we should wait one season to launch, or to just go ahead and do it that fall of ’09. And we decided we should go for it. We waited as Coterie opened for 5-10 minutes and there was literally nobody in the hall yet. The first person to walk by our booth came in and started looking at the collection and asked some simple questions. Two minutes later they had written a pretty nice order and walked away. So five minutes into the life of the brand, we had gotten our first order. For me that was really exciting, like, Okay maybe we are onto something here. It gave me the confidence to keep going forward. It was a great start for One Grey Day.

Who was the first celebrity to wear your designs? What did that feel like?

There were some people that were wearing One Grey Day pieces before it launched, just some close friends, but it was never something that happened organically. There’s giving something to a friend and you know they’re going to wear it and support you no matter what. There’s a difference between that and getting a phone call saying, “I saw someone wearing your clothes.” That happened for me. I was getting ready to go on vacation that afternoon, and about a half hour before I left for the airport, I got an email and it was a picture of AnnaLynne McCord from 90210 wearing one of our dresses on the red carpet for the Taking of Pelham 123. I remember seeing the picture from the side and thinking, that looks like a One Grey Day dress. And then I looked closer and was like, omigod that is a One Grey Day dress! And then 15 minutes after that, the phone was ringing like it had never rung before. We had a multiple line phone at the office, and I don’t think more than one line had ever been used at once. And in that few hours the phones were ringing. It was a good feeling. It was pretty cool.

Where do you ideally see your girl wearing One Grey Day?

I think she’s all over. I think that’s one of the great things about One Grey Day is that with each individual person it can be worn differently. The reason I say that is because what we’re doing is taking cool basics and doing them with a twist. What I mean by that [for instance] is taking a traditional v-neck sweater and adding a back slit to it where there’s a peekaboo of the back. And things like that for sure can be worn differently. What that means is that for a certain girl the piece can make them look sexy or feel sexy, but for another girl, they make the piece be sexy, and I think that that’s important that it’s going both ways. The ideal situation would be someone who has plans to go out on a date or to dinner, but in the meantime has to go to work and they don’t want to have to change their whole outfit.

What’s one piece of advice for designers wanting to start their own line?

Not get too ahead of yourself. Whenever you’re dealing with something as creative as a clothing line, there’s always going to be time to choose the things you want to do, but sometimes you have to choose the things you need to do, in order to be able to get to that point.

What’s your favorite piece of the collection?

The stuff that we are selling right now for the stores in fall – the boyfriend sweater. It’s an oversized v-neck sweater. For me it’s just a sexy piece. A beautiful girl that’s wearing a piece of menswear inspired clothing; that just does it for me.

What trend are you most excited about for next Spring?

Time to introduce a little bit of color to One Grey Day.

- As if there weren’t enough fashion reality shows hosted by supermodels, now NBC has thrown their chapeau into the ring with Fashion Star, hosted by Elle Macpherson. But don’t expect high concept challenges requiring yards of tulle and a metric ton of beading; this show will focus on everyday items, “like bathing suits or lingerie, or surf wear and jeans.” And the winner gets a multi-million dollar contract and the chance to have their line sold at a “massive retail store.” I don’t know about you, but I’ve all but given up on PJ Runway (Lifetime? Ew.) and The Fashion Show, despite Iman being the best person ever, just doesn’t make the cut. Will a show about designers making mass-retail jeans intrigue you? Especially on NBC? [Modelina]

Look One: Shredded ‘n’ Leather

The Long  Tube Skirt: Mary Meyer, $94

California native cum NY transplant Mary Meyer fuses her talent for art into clothing that makes sense. Most notable for her geo-graphics and dyeing, she also has some revolutionary ideas about garment making. The construction of the skirt is what inspires me: she’s purposefully left the knit hemline unfinished so that the wearer may cut it to the desired length, no tailor required. The ground grazing-option takes effect when you place the waistline at any height. Named the AJM Skirt for Andrew J. Mukamal of Kell On Earth assistantship, Meyer was inspired by his grunge gone goth glam; long soft layers that counterpose plaid and leather.

The Shredded Top: Evil Twin, $89

“A physical copy of one’s self whom has altered morality” is the definition of this Australian brand’s namesake. I gather that this Evil Twin‘s twin shirt would not have holes, nor spaced fringe, nor a marble tie dye, all of which sneakily camouflage my exposed skin. With the skirt up high resting just below the bosom, I only have need for a bust long top. This holy top was born to move and shake, so if scandal isn’t your thing, throw a hot bandeau underneath as a bra, and let the hue show through. Lest you end up locked up for indecent exposure.

The Leather Jacket: Kill City, $458

With a slouch squared collar and super long sleeve lining, the relaxed rocker jacket is the ideal weight for Spring’s transition. Based in LA, Kill City is forged in that flexible weather to the sound of the rockin’ punk wail of Iggy Pop.

The Side-Laced Wedge: Madison Harding, $185 (originally $265)

Created intently for the downtown pavement pounder, these suede wedge booties ground the outfit’s transitional effect. Hilary Rosenman of Madison Ave., N.Y. and Barri Budin of Harding Dr., N.J. hauled their fashion knowledge to the East Village and began making astutely designed Madison Harding shoes.

The Hair Corset: Court, $48

Their very own hair corset comes from the Native American tradition of hair tying. They lace up like the top of a riding boot and encapsulate the pony tail. More details on this piece in the coming looks.

If you have to go to Court, this is for sure the one to go to.

Rose is an obvious bombshell, so the fitted top and low plunging neckline is a great look for her. The full skirt adds a fun element to her look. How does it compare to the runway?

Rose gives the dress a much nicer shape than the runway model does. The green color is great for her dark hair and medium skin tone. She chose spiked silver Christian Louboutin shoes to complete the look. I love those shoes, but I like the way black looks, as it is shown on the runway. Even gold would have been nice to bring out the warmer tones in the dress. But overall, she looks gorgeous and not too overdone, as this dress speaks for itself. Grade?

Cosgrove wore a sleek, custom Nicole Miller platinum shredded sequin shift on the blue carpet.

Scerbo chose a colorful, body-conscious Nicole Miller printed sequined one-shoulder cocktail dress.

Both girls looked lovely in their Nicole Miller Signature dresses. A young, fresh actress can’t go wrong with dresses this fun, flirty and beautiful.

On motherhood: “I had kids at 25 and 27 [Isabella and Connor, Nicole’s adopted children with first husband Tom Cruise]. I think I have more patience now but less physical energy. It’s a trade-off: In your 20s, you’re bounding around, they’re attached at your hip, and you can just go and do anything. But I’m much more of a homebody now. My roots are deeper.”

Madden originally approached Deschanel and agreed to pay her $2 million to overlook a line of shoes and accessories. The verbal agreement said she would get paid even if the line wasn’t produced but would cover 13 days of work including press appearances and a photo shoot.

But in October, Madden went to Deschanel‘s agent and said the deal was off. Remember, verbal agreements in California are binding, so she deserves the money right? Madden has already had a tough year in the press, so maybe he’ll just pay up to keep things quiet.

Like I keep saying, clean it up before the new year.

So I know I’m not usually the one writing the ‘On The List’ posts, but I was in LA last week hanging out with Lucas Logan and you all know that we just had to get some events in while I was there.  Friday we headed to the Moods of Norway store on Robertson in Los Angeles for some afternoon cocktails and waffles, and to check out their new spring line.  The sparkling Sake was a great touch to all of the bright colors, light music, and painted tractors.  Check out the video we made of the store, with a little commentary here and there to the lines.  Check out the Moods of Norway site to see more of their stuff, and find out where you can shop!

You may have noticed some new faces on Fashion Indie today, and I just wanted to take a second to introduce all of the Indies to our newest contributors, Lucas Logan and Jessica Li.

Lucas is a blogger and model from Los Angeles that you may recognize from our ‘25 under 25 stylish people to know‘ and a few other ‘Street Heroes’ posts around Fashion Indie. Lucas has his own blog where he chronicles his nightlife in LA, and now you can find more from him right here!

Jessica is another ‘Street Hero’ previously featured on Fashion Indie with her own style blog. She’s one of the few fashion-conscious people I know in Michigan, so expect to see great Lookbook-esque street style photos, and you may catch her and I out and about around Michigan if you’re lucky.  Plus, she’s going to be studying abroad in Paris very soon, so we can only imagine the great things she’ll be filling us in on from Europe.

Lucas Logan, an 18-year-old It Boy from LA has become the newest member of our ’25 Under 25 Stylish People To Know.’ You may remember us asking you about ten times to give us suggestions on who to replace Brad Goreski on the list because we found out he is secretly an old man, but no one really listened to us. Finally, a Cult member, Melanie Maverick, came through for us.  She introduced us to fashion blogger/model/designer Lucas Logan, a braced-face triangle lover from LA that writes for Stylish Kids In Riot, as well as has his personal blog that talks about his going-ons and includes lots of photos.  Apparently he’s going to be doing a runway show with American Apparel this fall, and spends most of his time spray painting, hanging out in the woods, and wearing beanies.  We know this kid’s extremely LA, but that doesn’t have to be a bad thing.

Jenni Kayne presented her collection yesterday, but was absent from the actual show because of the impending birth of her first child. Kayne, who hails from my hometown of Los Angeles, presented a collection that was quintessential L.A. chic. Jenni, who is friends with the Olsens, presented an updated, more polished version of 80/90′s favorites like power suits (minus the shoulder pads) and Ray Bans. She mixed this will L.A. standards like simple floral shift dresses. All and all a perfect collection for the Nicole-Mary-Kate-Mischa-set

The Cobra Snake scored these photos from a recent American Vintage fashion show.  The styling of the show was 1950s cowboy meets 1960s doowoop, so basically every look is perfect for Williamsburg.  Check out all the photos at Cobrasnake.
