SPREAD UM: Alexa Chung for Marie Claire

In the September 2009 issue of Marie Claire, Alexa Chung models some casual looks that are great for fall.  The styling is young-looking without being stuffed with trends; Alexa rocks her trademark tomboy style in Alexander Wang, Wren, Stella McCartney, and Luella.

She also names some of her essential basics for fall, including Topshop skinny jeans, American Apparel minis, and pretty much anything H&M.

COLLAB HO: Anna Sui for Target

COLLAB HO: Anna Sui for Target

Anna Sui is set to be designing for the Designer Collaborations program at Target, and follows in the footsteps of Alexander McQueen. This is separate from Target’s Go International range which uses up and coming designers such as Luella and Proenza Schouler.

Sui’s inspiration for the range is Gossip Girl, Sui told WWD:

“I have always been a fan of designer partnerships with mass retailers, I think it is a great way to bring fashion to everyone. I love Go International and was intrigued with Target’s new take on designer partnerships. It’s a fresh approach. I was able to select a muse or source of creative inspiration to focus the collection around. It is an exciting challenge to try and interpret my aesthetic into a mass-produced product with a specific inspirational source as the focus. I liked the idea of creating a collection reflective of each characters’ style, sensibility and unique approach to fashion. By combining the elements of art, city, spirit, punk and glamour, we created a collection that exudes New York City fashion.”

Available Sept 13th.

RUNWAY RUNDOWN: Luella Fall 2009

Edited by

RUNWAY RUNDOWN: Luella Fall 2009Luella Bartley’s inspiration for her Fall 2009 collection was unquestionably punk-rocking, elementary school army brats. Bartley did what she does best, sending dozens of short dresses and delicate suits down the runway. Unlike the clashing colors of the Luella spring collection, this season shows many more grays, blacks and golds, sprinkled with zippers, buttons, hooks, parachute pockets and shirt collars/ coat lapels to die for. Though the gold tights are a bit M.I.A circa 2007, they work with the collection, making the sparkly gold dresses, buttons, zippers, gloves and purses really stand out.

Trendspark: Bats?

Trendspark: Bats?

Trendspark: Bats?

Is it just the Halloween spirit already in the air, or is the bat actually the most fashionable creature?

Is it because they’re always dressed in slimming black? Is it their propensity to stay out all night? Is it their association with the gothic?

Luella already brought us the Ghost World-inspired bat mask glasses and the bat logo tee a couple seasons ago (above).  But the rest of the non-batwing-sleeve bat trend has lagged behind the fuss over the Batman movies.  I’ve seen some bats still hanging around on the accessories front.

For around $60 you can rock these bat-shaped nipple covers.  They’re made of real leather, sequins, and the eyes are Swarovski crystals.  Bat Pasties are available at Ophelia Fancy.

Topshop’s polyurethane bat-shaped cross-body bag is a more subtle way to work the bat theme into your outfit. It’s quirky without being costumey.

Would you wear bats?
