This isn’t Lady Jane’s first time at the rodeo as she hosted the 63rd annual Primetime Emmy Awards this past September. And though last year’s Fifis was a veritable shitshow of malfunctions and technical difficulties, Lynch — being an old pro — is coming prepared: “I’ll make sure I’ll have notes on note cards and not on a teleprompter. Laricks taped the finale last summer and had to keep mum on the outcome since then. Though he has been wooed by several companies in recent years to start a range of beauty products, he decided to partner with Batallure Beauty LLC – which creates beauty brands and “store experiences” for the likes of Sephora, Macy’s and Marchesa – because he felt they understood what he and his company stood for.

Robin Burns, chairman and co-founder of Batallure, said of Louboutin that his designs are “extremely aspirational to women” and “most beauty products that are successful have an element of aspiration to the consumer.”

Louboutin tends to agree, stating “Beauty products also have to do with empowering women. That’s very much the job of the shoes I’m designing.” And while the designer chose to remain allusive as to what specific categories he’ll be launching, he emphasized that they will “mirror the quality of the shoes, of the bags, of all the DNA of the brand.”

As for his inspiration behind the new line, Louboutin looked to old-school royalty: Queen Nefertiti and her 3,300-year-old bust at Berlin’s Neues Museum. “It’s the most beautiful thing. The collection is part of Macy’s Impulse imprint, which has previously included the likes of Giambattista Valli, Karl Lagerfeld, Doo.Ri Chung and most recently Alberta Ferretti. Featuring 24 to 30 styles, Richie’s line will only be available at about 100 Macy’s stores and online at macys.com.

According to the reality star cum designer cum reality star cum designer, the Macy’s collection “represents the many different layers of a modern woman. Women are wearing so many different hats these days. We are evolving. Not just working, but creating. This collection has a strong mix of masculine and feminine: printed chiffon mixed with faux leathers. I focused on the details, from the zipper pulls to the buttons.”

While Impulse collections are usually on sale for six weeks, Macy’s expects Nicole Richie’s offering to sell out in as soon as two weeks due to her popularity…so that means you still have a few months to prepare to snatch all those printed chiffon and faux leather confections from the apparel-hungry claws of other die-hard Fashion Star fans. Wearing Dolce & Gabbana — guess they finally buried the hatchet — Madge took a few questions on the red carpet. When asked about that too-hot-for-TV commercial, she simply responded, “I don’t think it’s raunchy. Macy’s presold 300 special Truth or Dare kits which included 2.5 oz and 1.7 oz bottles of the perfume, the body lotion, a T-shirt, a deluxe edition of the sometime singer’s record-breaking MDNA album and her 1991 Truth or Dare documentary on Blu-Ray, all for a cool $151.

“This fresh, youthful line of dresses reflects both my roots and the modern, yet timeless spirit of Calvin Klein,” said Brazilian-born Costa of the collaboration. While Macy’s sees this as a “huge coup,” Calvin Klein is equally excited from a brand-building and commercial standpoint.

One can expect Costa to translate his clean almost austere aesthetic into dresses in jersey and crepe materials for the capsule line, which was inspired by Brazilian architecture and the “sunset on the horizon,” according to Macy’s VP of marketing, Martine Reardon.

The collection will debut on May 15 and will be available as part of the two-month “Magical Journey” promotion at 80 Macy’s department stores, as well as on macys.com. My only question is, can we look forward to Costa’s muse Lara Stone turning it in the ad campaign? [WWD, sub req'd]

- Alberta Ferretti for Macy’s has a lookbook, but more importantly, Alberta Ferretti for Macy’s actually exists. So many diffusion lines, such little capacity to care about them. [Fashionista]

-Tommy Hilfiger is investing $1 million to improve conditions at the Bangladeshi factory where 29 people died in a fire last year  after getting his spot blown up by ABC. There were no casualties in said spot blowing up. [The Cut]

- Who knew Roger Sterling and the Dowager Countess had so much in common? The lascivious lushes at Mad Men get paired up with their  more prudish but equally dramatic soul mates over at Downton Abbey. 20 minutes after the show aired, H&M’s website sold out of a minidress by Sarah Parrott that retailed for $19.95 and a $49.95 men’s blazer by Nzimiro Oputa.

By Wednesday morning at 9:30, Saks.com had been wiped clean of Orly Shani’s convertible skirt, going for a comparatively hefty price of $350, with sales reportedly going well in its 49 stores.

Meanwhile, Macy’s had been carrying Lizzie Parker’s $79 tunic, Edmond Newton’s $110 cocktail dress and Nikki Poulos’ $89 kimono-sleeve caftan — which, by the gay, is my new drag name — exclusively online and at its Herald Square location, most of which was plucked up by eager viewers.

Whether any of these designers will become a household name seems unlikely, especially since the show has been nearly universally reviled and the designs deemed “soulless at best” by none other than Women’s Wear Daily. But with NBC, what’s good isn’t always popular and what’s bad isn’t always burned to the ground before inflicting further harm onto society. [WWD]

The kerfuffle stems from a deal the two companies struck in 2007. Tiffany’s and Swatch entered into a 20 year deal in which Swatch would design, manufacture and distribute Tiffany watches worldwide. Swatch terminated the agreement in Spetember 2011, accusing the famed jeweler of “systematic efforts to block and delay the development of the business.”

Tiffany & Co. has countersued the Swiss watch retailer for a rather paltry $589.4 million in damages. It claims Swatch “failed to provide appropriate distribution for Tiffany branded watches in the luxury space,” as well as neglected its brand management and product design obligations.

Swatch is expected to earn some payout from Tiffany’s when arbitration begins in October. [WWD, sub req'd]

Debuting tomorrow, Fashion Star tackles the business aspect of fashion and thus features buyers as judges. They not only decide who wins the big bucks, but they also bid against one another to carry a look exclusively. The show was taped over the summer to allow retailers time to produce clothes so that each week, the buyers can place orders after a designer’s runway presentation while viewers can order from the collection online the same night it debuts or in stores the following day.

Helping the fourteen contestants along the way will be host Elle Macpherson and mentors Jessica Simpson, Nicole Richie and John Varvatos.

Though only one lucky designer will walk away with the grand prize, according to the show’s creators, everyone’s a winner, with some designers nevertheless selling ”hundreds of thousands of dollars.” Probably because J. Simps shook out her extensions one day and some cash flew out from that booming billion-dollar business of hers. Remember that happened? [WWD]

Coco-Cola, The New York Times, Ford, Old Spice and, my personal favorite Captain Morgan, are a few of the companies that took advantage of Facebook’s brand timeline going live this morning. Some feature detailed histories going back decades and decades —  for instance, the front page of the Times from when Lincoln was shot in 1865  –  and some are just plain horse shit — who knew Old Spice was co-founded by a one-eyed Australian ninja leopard? Noted social media superstar Burberry, unsurprisingly, was also one of the brands to jump on the timeline bandwagon, as were super-retailers Macy’s and Walmart. Below, some highlights from their past.

Burberry's page starts with the company's founding in 1856 when it opened its first store in Basingstoke then hops to the early 20th century when Burberry laid the groundwork for its iconic trenchcoat and outfitted Arctic explorers and record-breaking aviators. Winding along, you'll discover a photo of gabardine ski suit form 1920, an ad campaign from the 30s, Audrey Hepburn kissing George Peppard in the rain -- both wearing Burberry trenches -- from 1961's Breakfast at Tiffany's, and video of Christopher Bailey wishing a very merry Christmas from 2009.

Rowland Hussey Macy opened his "fancy dry goods"  store in 1858 on 6th Avenue and 14th Street then in 1924 it became the "largest department store in the world."  Also that year, Macy's debuted its annual Thanksgiving Day Parade, originally known as the Macy's Christmas Parade, featuring animals from the Central Park Zoo. Giant helium balloons were added in 1927 and the spectacle was televised for the first time nationwide in 1948. In 1994, 136 years after its founding, Macy's became America's largest retailer, while still maintaining some of its "fancy" roots.

The first Walmart opened in Rogers, AZ in 1962, with its first "Discount City" opening two years later. Everything else is pretty much Snoozeville after that and there's not even any mention of when Walmart was bought out by Satan. I believe it was the early 80s. The new face for Dolce & Gabbana, Adam Senn wore The One Sport fragrance for men to compliment his Dolce & Gabbana suit. The new fragrance will be launching soon, exclusively at Macy's.

Macy’s is fighting to stave off a deal Martha signed with JC Penney — allegedly behind their back — while trying to keep the brand all to themselves. Stewart had sold a 16.6% stake in its company to J.C. Penney back in December to begin selling there in February 2013, directly after the deal with Macy’s was set to expire. However, Macy’s decided to extend its contract with the brand for another five years on January 23, the same day it also decided to sue Martha and co. Macy’s is now seeking a preliminary injunction to prevent Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia from going any further in its deal with Penney’s, though that deal is still a year away.

“MSLO’s announcement of its deal with J.C. Penney…devalued the Martha Stewart products that Macy’s is currently selling, in ways that are not calculable,” Macy’s claims in its breach of contract suit. “MSLO has severely damaged the ‘crucial connection’ between Macy’s and Martha Stewart that Macy’s has devoted years and tens of millions of dollars to developing; it has destroyed the public perception that Macy’s is the only place a consumer can turn to to purchase Martha Stewart home products in key categories.”

The suit also makes reference to that dark, poncho-filled time in Martha’s life when she was sent to prison and her company’s image and reputation were subsequently tarnished: “At the time Macy’s negotiated and entered into the agreement in 2005 and early 2006, the ‘Martha Stewart’ brand was under pressure by very public proceedings and their aftermath involving Ms. Stewart.”

Well, if Macy’s wins this case, things are going to be super awkward at the dinner table and no amount of parsley can garnish away the things said in the heat of battle. [WWD, sub req'd]

I hear you’ve been in the works with this Macy’s project for over a year. When you started, did you know that Karl Lagerfeld had signed on, and the great roster of talent they were gathering?

I knew that Karl was involved. I have to be honest, he was a big motivator for me. I’ve always been a fan of Giambattista Valli, and Karl Lagerfeld is like God.

Which of your strongest aesthetics did you apply to designing this collection?

Definitely the element of jersey. I’m known for this elegant ease and I think that’s what I wanted to convey. It’s not the same jersey we use for the collection, but it’s a beautiful modal and I think it’s so modern. It’s great that they’re able to make it accessible for so many people.

What are you most excited about for your show this Fashion Week?

I love the process. During fashion week, there’s a rhythm to it. Everything feels great, and then you feel the emotion that comes with it; the momentum picks up. You work with all these creative minds and it’s so great to see it all come together. We have a rack for the clothes with about five pieces on there. And it’s amazing how fast things happen as you get closer to the day. Before you know it, it’s 3 days before styling and that rack just fills up, 10 more pieces, 20 more pieces, 30 more pieces! I don’t know how it happens! But it just does. And then things get faster. We’re working there 24/7 and it feels like 2 hours have gone by. It’s Fashion Law. Something happens where time gets sped up, but everything speeds up, the amount of clothes that are produced, the energy level, the creativity and I love that rhythm.

Macy’s’ deal with Martha was apparently set to expire at the end of the month, and perhaps to rain all over Penney’s and new CEO Ron Johnson‘s parade, Macy’s decided to renew it agreement with the lifestyle guru for another five years. MSLO also released a statement confirming the renewal of the Macy’s contract.

Johnson, Apple‘s former retail chief, had planned to use Marth Stewart Living as a platform to relaunch, revamp and reinvent the struggling chain. Meanwhile, as part of the lawsuit, Macy’s is seeking an injunction to prevent Martha from breaking the contract — but where this leaves JC Penney is anyone’s guess. [WWD]

Apparently, shutting down a Macy’s in between filming holiday commercials, Bieber — off-key even with the (considerable) help from autotune — does some last-minute shopping with his “bros” while Mariah does her favorite dance move — sensually rubbing up against a wall. When it seems like things couldn’t get  much more uninspired, the duo meet up in a sleigh — by this point Mariah’s sewn on a new wig, bang and all — to greet screaming fans.

Mimi and Bibi look like any other drunken aunt and her sexually-confused nephew shopping the malls for the holidays, until Carey, perhaps mistaking the cherubic teeny bopper for her cherubic house husband, starts succumbing to Bieber’s awkward advances. Trust me, after watching this video, all you’ll want for Christmas is a barf bag.

Wal-Mart is opening at 10 pm on Thanksgiving, but before then, the megachain will give shoppers the chance to sign up for a preview of its Black Friday catalogue. Right on its heels is Macy’s, which will open at midnight on Black Friday with hundreds of “doorbuster” sales. Sears decided to stay closed on Thanksgiving this year – “There was a sentiment from customers to keep Thanksgiving as a holiday,” (of all the concepts) according to a division vice president — but will offer scannable billboards around the country to encourage mobile shopping. Ignoring Sears and their observance of Turkey Day, Gap Inc. will open 1,000 stores this Thursday, 800 alone of which are Old Navys.

Despite the extended store hours and doorbustery promotions, the appeal of Black Friday is waning. “The ‘big day’ isn’t the ‘big day’ anymore,” David Bassuk, managing director and head of AlixPartners told WWD. “It’s been diluted with earlier and earlier hours and even Brown Thursdays. There’s still some allure to getting up early and hunting for bargains, but we’re starting to see more and more retailers who are telling the consumer, ‘Stay home and get your sleep. We’ll send you what you need so you can still get the best deal.’”

What’s more disturbing: the fact that retailers are so desperate to make Christmas dough they’ve created a Brown Thursday or the fact that they insist on calling it “Brown Thursdays?” And will you indulge in the shopping frenzy this Friday or will you be too busy fighting your way through a turkey coma? The Material Girl line has a vintage feel to it — does your style come from a similar place?
Definitely. I think I take my style from all walks of life, and all generations and decades of life as well. I love mixing ’50s with ’80s and classic with punk. And i think that’s what this line embodies. It allows you to rework the same pieces in different ways so people don’t realize that you’ve worn it before. I mean, I wear the same thing all the time — if I’m at home, I’m in sweatpants. I don’t care. But when you go out, you want something that’s versatile.

What excites you the most about being the face of Material Girl?
To have Madonna ask you to be the face of her brand, that’s the coolest thing ever. As a young girl who grew up idolizing her and thinking that she was the be-all and end-all of how women should be, being the face of Material Girl is the greatest honor I’ve ever had.

You’re a member of the Fashion Police, but what’s the worst fashion faux pas that you’ve personally committed?
Sweat stains on clothes! I’ll never be one of these girls who could walk into anything and say, ‘I can do this!’ I always get nervous. I always get scared. I’m even nervous about judging these girls for this contest! You never want to disappoint, you never want to say that wrong thing. I get nervous and then I start sweating. People literally interview me on the red carpet and I’m like dabbing my top lip, trying to be subtle about it. I’m like oh my God, get me out!

So do you get nervous when you do a taping of Fashion Police?
No, because Joan is just so funny! We’re like a family now. It’s mainly a comedy show based on fashion and it’s one of those things where you have to have a sense of humor about yourself.

The scent, a combination of multiple notes including gardenia, tuberose, neroli and jasmine, was inspired by the Material Girl’s late mother: “My oldest memory of my mother is her perfume. I carry it with me everywhere. She always smelled like gardenias and tuberose, an intoxicating mixture [that was] feminine and mysterious. I wanted to re-create this scent, but with something fresh and new about it as well. Something honest and yet daring — hence the name ‘Truth or Dare.’”

Madonna worked with Coty on everything from the scent’s development and marketing to the free gift-with-purchase, after preliminary talks began this past spring. Coty, no doubt excited to collaborate with a legend and not just another teeny-bopper flavor of the year, started working on the fragrance before anything was even signed.

The “Truth or Dare” line will include a $28 body lotion and a $25 shower gel, while the perfume will be available in two sizes in the US — a 50 mL bottle for $55 and a 70 mL bottle for $68 — with a 30 mL bottle being sold internationally.

As for the promotion, Madge is gearing up for a multi-media onslaught to coincide with her new album — also set for release next year — that will see her starring in global TV, print, online and outdoor marketing. Much-in-demand photographic duo Mert and Marcus have already shot the print component. [WWD]

“Over the past several years, I have been approached countless times to create my own brand,” said Madame Ciccone. “The timing is right and I have found great partners in Iconix, who can help translate my vision to reality.”

Iconix CEO Neil Cole seconded that emotion: “After the highly successful launch of the junior brand Material Girl, we knew there would be a tremendous demand for a brand that Madonna herself is the face of and that truly captures her essence.”

Lady Madonna is already developing a scent with noted celebrity perfumer Coty and will eventually roll out footwear, handbags and intimate apparel.

The super department store will add another 100,000 square feet of selling space — bringing its grand total to a whopping 1.2 million square feet — as well as a number of luxury shop-in-shops, 300 more fitting rooms and what Macy’s calls the largest shoe department — wait for it — in the WORLD!

But that’s not all. There will be interactive directories, a mobile shopping app, digital product info and streaming live videos of Macy’s events. Hopefully this renovation will also include a personal tour guide since I got lost in there just last week. [WWD, sub req'd]

Members  of the Manhattan elite sipped cocktails, posed for branded Polaroids (you can see mine here) , and got “inked” (you can see Factory PR’s here)  with airbrush tattoos all while previewing the Holiday 2011 American Rag collection.

The collection will feature 100 pieces, ranging from $95 to $450, debuting via Net-a-Porter and coming to karllagerfeld.com February 28th. Karl pop-up shops are being planned in several major cities, with at least one in Paris, and a select 20 “high-visibility” retailers will also carry the line. The company will expand into menswear for the fall 2012 season.

While the Karl line is meant to appeal to the younger generation, Karl Lagerfeld Paris, a more upscale collection, will be targeted at retailers in Europe, the Middle East, Russia, Asia and “key fashion cities” of North America — sorry L.A. — with prices starting where Karl left off, $411 to $3,425.

These initiatives are meant to turn the Lagerfeld celebrity into a global brand that exists independently of the Chanel and Fendi houses. That, thankfully, does not mean an end to the king of collaborations crown. So you can still get your Macy’s T-shirts, your overpriced glassware and god knows what else the Kaiser plasters his name to, but fair warning, those co-branding opportunities will be fewer and farther between. “My clothes have always been about making women feel elegant and modern, which is why I am so excited about this capsule collection,” Doo-Ri Chung said. “It truly embodies the confidence and creativity of the modern woman.”

Though we probably won’t see any leopard print capes adorned with a turban — also known as my laundry day look — there’s enough feline fun to go around as seen in this little ensemble above.

Present too are similar color palettes and silhouettes, but for items ranging from a disturbingly reasonable $50-$150, the world of haute couture couldn’t be further away. However, Valli chose to shoot the ads for his Impulse line, appearing in November issues across the board, in his Paris atelier.

As for the line itself, Giambattista Valli for Impulse Only will be available at 225 Macy’s stores come October 26th.

What’s your favorite thing to do when you’ve got lots and lots of time on your hands?

“[whispers] Oh that’s a nice one. I love to travel, but I really love to hang out with my Grandaughters downstairs. I’m on 10, they’re on 5. It’s not too difficult to find time when I’m done with my coffee. We are on another roll I tell you! I’m doing a lot of appearances. I’m on the road doing promotions or opening new stores. It’s a very busy time now, but I love it. I heard a great quote on the radio the other day; Mark Twain said, ’Make your vacation your vocation.’ Is that interesting? Or make your vocation your vacation. That’s a little harder to to. I felt, Old Marky and I, he must have been overworked. He must have been a workaholic. But I love what I’m doing.”

Your daughter, Lulu, werqed it on the runway last week. Is she pursuing modeling, or is that walk just for you?

“No, no, no, the show inspiration was of a voluptuous figure, which Lulu has always had and stood for. Last time she was on the runway was in 2000 when I did a show with the Playboy Bunnies. She was the best on that runway. She knows how to do [cups her hands a few inches from her breasts, gives a hunch]… She would never dream of modeling, she would have to loose 2/3 of her body weight. I dont know, maybe Victoria’s Secret? All the Victoria’s Secret models come off of my runway, because I let them be sexy, you know, flaunt it. And sure enough it’s easy to get them, then they’re scooped up by Victoria and you can’t get them anymore.”

What do your new timepieces tell us about you?

“What I love is that they always have stuff for young, my granddaughter sometimes. A skull with a bow in this watch. They go from kitty to grandma. From classic to cute. Twinkly to chic. I dont know, anyway. They’re great, beautifully made. Great weight, which is very important to me in a watch. I had lots of fun doing it, great company. I just really love them. The numbers are big, they have a real weight to them…I mean Frankie has me down. Frank, he owns the company… Frankie what’s your last name?”

We can forgive her unreliable memory so long as she continues to turn out the you-go-girliest pieces in the industry.

While at Macy’s, the Chanel and Fendi designer extolled his love for department stores, claiming that he knows “everything” about them, particularly the American variety: “My name was made in America by department stores. I have a certain weakness for department stores.” As do I. Give me a one-stop shop so I can avoid being around people as much as possible, thank you and goodbye.

As for his collection, it’s apparently flying off the shelf– much like the Kaiser’s diffusion line for H&M. According to Terry Lundgren, big boss man of Macy’s, they were “blown away by the sell-throughs with Karl. Even before his p.a. [public appearance], we did more than $1 million in sales.”

What can I say, the kids love a high collar and a printed tee. [WWD]
