This  New York Fashion Week, however, the winter has been suspiciously mild. Temperatures have barely dipped below freezing and nary a snow flake has dropped in weeks. So let’s just ignore our impending doom thanks to the totally buzz-killing reality of global warming and instead focus on what matters: dressing for the Tents. Here are 10 staples — 5 for the guys and 5 for the gals, but feel free to mix and match since we actively don’t subscribe to gender constructs — for NYFW.

Virtual Statues of Daphne Guinness to Go on Display in Paris Department Store

Entitled “Visions Couture,” the display will feature these Daphne avatars in looks from Paco Rabane, Gareth Pugh, Maison Martin Margiela, Rick Owens and Junya Watanabe — in other words, a fierce fashionable feast for the eyes. ”Visions” will also include short films by Knight about each outfit and an interactive display by multimedia artist Danny Brown, utilizing images submitted by the public and passersby. Maison Martin Margiela Charity Tees Fight AIDS

Limited edition charity AIDS T-shirt for the first time in Japanese to launch on December 1stfor the world AIDS day.

The charity AIDS T-Shirt has been present in all Maison Martin Margiela collections since Fall/Winter 1994/1995. Each T-Shirt is produced in a different colour with contrasted text every season and bears the text marked below in English.

When most T-shirts carry a slogan their message may be read from a distance… dialogue is not necessary. When this T-Shirt is worn it is no longer possible for others to read the text printed on it (most of the text is on the inside at the back of the V-neckline). A dialogue on HIV/AIDS is there encouraged once another asks the wearer to explain what is written on their T-Shirt.

A percentage of the sales is donated to ‘AIDES’, a French organisation dedicated to fight the HIV virus and take care of patients living with HIV/AIDS (www.aides.org). Over the years, 170,000 T-shirts have been sold and brought a contribution of over 700,000 euros to ‘AIDES’. Unfortunately, the virus is still around and that action is still valid.

Further to the seasonal English version, the Maison has decided to have a yearly edition every time in a different language for the World AIDS day, starting with Japanese. Created in Paris, sold around the world, worn touching the heart, this limited edition charity AIDS T-shirt will be exclusively available in all Maison Martin Margiela stores.

The focus of Maison Martin Margiela of late has been on the absence of Mr Margiela but if truth be told, who knows how long the house has been designing collections without a leader reining in it all in. MMM has always emphasised that their lab-coated employees all have an important part to play and so it’s even more clear that this collection is a cohesive group effort that has shed away the unsettled nature of the past two seasons to get on with designing clothes for its fans.

For the past year, anticipation of Tim Burton’s adaptation of Alice in Wonderland has been growing and is leading many to be inspired by the 19th century tale. The story is a favorite of mine, so I couldn’t be more thrilled.

Maison Martin Margiela has launched their debut fragrance, Untitled.* The new scent was created under the auspices of L’Oreal. It is expected to debut at Colette in Paris next week, elsewhere in March.


“This perfume includes of course the codes of the brand, while cultivating its personality. Based on green floral notes, we can smell galbanum, boxwood, mastic, incense, bitter orange … as if they had been gathered after the rain.”

Un coup de foudre, that’s the French phrase for “love at first sight.” It’s a rare occasion when I find something I’d lie, cheat and steal to have, but an evening stroll in Tribeca led me into a girl wearing the leather studded booties pictured above. I contemplated kicking her knees and swiping the boots off her feet, but I decided a compliment  would be the less delinquent route. Introducing shoe designer Els Proost, her company, Elsa Shoes, easily ranked at the top of my latest obsessions.

Proost has quite the resume having designed shoes and accessories for Dries Van Noten, Emporio Armani, Maison Martin Margiela, Costume National, Hussein Chalayan, Angelo Figus and more, so there’s no doubt why they’re so damn gorgeous. Craftsmanship,comfort and a “fashionable amusing twist” reign among Proost’s design goals, and it’s safe to say she achieves them with every pair she constructs. Like the woman who married a rollerc0aster, maybe i’ll join the bandwagon and marry Elsa Shoes. Now that’s what I like to call a bright future!
