How did you get started in fashion?

I grew up on New York City’s Upper West Side –not exactly the beach culture capital of the world! While getting my undergraduate degree in finance at Baruch College, I started working at Steven Alan. It’s there that I kind of fell into design, immersed in a fashion industry environment at a young age. I was so drawn to production that I balanced a full time job with a full course load. Eventually, the idea for Onia emerged and that’s when I struck out on my own.

How is Onia different than your run of the mill swim trunk?
Onia came from my own frustrating experience trying to find swimwear that was both functional and well-designed. The choices available in the market simply weren’t appealing or they literally fell apart. In creating Onia products we use unique fabrics, sourced from all over the world (Italy, Spain, England, etc.), to provide colors and patterns that are stylish but never garish. And all our hardware is custom made to endure a pounding in the surf.

Mens Runway Review: Louis Vuitton Spring 2012

The mens shows in Milan are over and now it’s time to move onto Paris. French luxury label Louis Vuitton‘s Spring 2012 men collection is the first on the chopping block.

Let’s first discus the set. The models walked out of what appeared to be large scaled Louis Vuitton trunks.

This collection was obviously crafted for the true prepster. Marc Jacobs and Paul Helber have out together a looks that any jetsetting mogul or trust fund baby to would gladly don.

One can see Marc’s hand in the designs when the printed looks come out since they look very similar to his Spring 2010 collection. The quilted jackets and bags were a different look for the label this season.

To be honest this collection underwhelmed. There seemed to be a lack of innovations and a disconnect in cohesion. Besides the amazing set and some pieces this collection looks like anything you can find in your local department store.

Mens Runway Review: D&G 2012

We gave the Dolce & Gabbana mens show high marks. Keep reading to she how the sister label’s D&G Spring 2012 show did.

From this collection, Prada, & Burberry show, one can deduce it is going to be a print heavy S/S season for men.

While the Dolce & Gabbana show focused on neural tones; D&G brought the spice. The prints conjure up images of clothes from the 70?s and vintage Versace. I have said it again and again but next season every man should have at least one printed trouser in his closet. (Just to make a statement)

The duo also focused on denim in this collection. While many thought the whole denim trend was getting trite this collection breathed new life into it. The blue denim waistband on the bottoms add a certain underground feel which contradicts and complements all at the same time.

When on the topic of denim, D&G has stamped it’s approval on “The Canadian Tuxedo.” Denim on denim can many times appear sloppy or just trashy but with the right proportions and washes it can look expensive.

The D&G collection overall was very strong. The prints and designs are ridiculously inspiring. Now the question in the fashion world’s mine is will the womens collection live to the hype?

Mens Runway Review: Dolce & Gabbana Spring 2012

Mens Fashion Week has officially begun in Milan. What better way to celebrate than by reviewing one of our favorite mens label, Dolce & Gabbana.

The Italian design duo sent down their Spring/Summer collection, called The Net, earlier today in Milan. Besides the latest fashions, the show displayed that the brand is has a great grasp on social media. Besides live streaming their show (9AM EST) they also broadcasted comments from online with a screen above the runway.

The designers also thought out of the box when it can to the garments. The show started off with a classic Dolce & Gabbana suit but what followed had me caught of guard. Apparently for this collection it was all about what appeared to be nets. (Hence the name)

The designers incorporated these nets in as many pieces as possible.By many I mean: tops, pants, shorts, jacket, and even shoes. It was interesting to see the different materials used in the same way from the perforated leather in the footwear to the material that shaped the tailored blazers.

My favorite piece, believe it or not, wasn’t a garment. In fact I have become obsessed with the mirrored sunglasses showcased on some of the models. They will surely be on more and more faces next season

Domenico & Stefano definitely have a hit collection on their hands that will be very hard to top the rest of the week. They managed to take what one would consider glorified mesh but with the neutral colors and sheer innovation of this collection the outcome became something totally different.

Vertigo is defined as a type of dizziness. Well that the same feeling I get seeing a half naked male model roll around in the sand.

Photographer Olaf Wipperfurth appropriately titled this spread vertigo since any one who see this might pass out after seeing the tightest abs in the world. This beach surely makes the snow in NYC feel ten times worse.

**WARNING** If you have an intolerance for shallow observations or you recently modeled in Men’s Spring 2010 Fashion Week, don’t read this.

The end of June and beginning of July are of importance to me for one reason: men’s fashion week. Yeah,the tailored suits and spring apparel are nice, but what I really look forward to is the hours I spend cooing over drop dead gorgeous models. The chiseled jaw. The supple lips. The piercing eyes. I’m like a kid in a candy-store!

But these past two weeks have been less than enjoyable for my model addiction. Is it just me, or are designers and bookers seriously skimping on the man candy this season? What once was a Cole, Ash, Luke and Taylor dominated field is now pillaged with some of world’s less fortunate looking creatures. Is there some sort of repulsive man trend I’m missing the boat on here?

First she bashes Pat Fields and Sex and the City, now she using ‘bears‘ in her fashion shows. I’m officially in love with Miss Westwood. During her menswear show in between waif-like androgynous male models, this guy showed up to model some of her wares. Westwood purposely used him to model outfits where his hairy-beefy chest would be showing. I have no idea who this guy is, if she found him on the street or what, but he’s kind of awesome. Keep being amazing Miss Vivienne Westwood.
