Manchester United Made Its Runway Debut With Hublot

As I exited a cab and crossed the street to enter Cipriani Wall Street last night, I was momentarily deterred by the Manchester United team bus parked out front. Be still my heart. For a futball fan like myself, seeing these talented athletes in person was absolutely incredible. Brought together by luxury timepiece brand Hublot, the Manchester United players strutted down the runway modeling watches from the 2011 collection for the ‘Art of Fusion’ fashion show.

Legendary team manager Sir Alex Ferguson was there, wearing a limited-edition Hublot bid on and purchased by Wayne Rooney. Also up for grabs was an Audi Type C car signed by the team as well as other fantastic Manchester United memorabilia. All proceeds from the live auction went to The Manchester United Foundation, seeking to provide positive experiences to children around the world through soccer.

Good news for those suffering from World Cup withdrawal. Manchester United, one of the most storied clubs in European soccer is coming to New York! Several prominent members will participate in renowned watchmaker Hublot‘s “Million Dollar Challenge”. Details after clickity click.

On Thursday, July 22nd at 4 p.m., players Paul Scholes, Nani, Darren Fletcher, Michael Owen, and Ryan Giggs will test out their feet. Hublot is setting up a target in the shape of one of their watches for the footballers to strike from 51 yards out. And a knight will be involved. Team manager Sir Alex Ferguson will also give it a go.

The event will take place outside the Flatiron building at 23rd and Broadway, just outside Madison Square Park. Most importantly, it’s all in the name of charity. If the players are successful, UNICEF will be getting a cool million bucks.

So if you’re missing your footy, head on down. It’s open to the public, there are no vuvuzelas (thank God), and it’ll be hot enough that if they hit the target you have an excuse to take your shirt off and yell “Goaaaaaaaal!”
