The prints brings her world to life; kaleidoscope visions of feathers and feral stripes. Using enormous cuts, the airy texture swims in full, shaping the body while fluttering. Extra material is used as a shawl, often covering the entire back starting at the head. Pleasant to see from the front, but perhaps a bit misleading from behind. Her more structured pieces dabble in craft, á la braiding as bodice. In the most unique ensemble to the rest of the, we see a multicolored tripped out tribal on an opaque pant and generous shouldered, long sleeve body hugging dress. Look closely at some of their hands, the black polish seeps down past the knuckles. She’s not afraid to get her hands dirty. Warrior mother indeed.

Pretty looks at Mara Hoffman Spring 2011 presentation

The theme of California girls with international rock hippie flair came thru brilliantly in a fantastic collection. The show channeled her travel inspirations of far flung places like Goa and beyond. The runway pieces were effortless with printed dresses, hooded shorts, après sun robes and cowl-neck cover-ups.

The models were prettily styled with bandannas, messy braids and sun-kissed makeup. Ms. Hoffman designed her suits with African-inspired prints and tie-dye details in fresh, light colors. The palette included soft aqua, pink and magenta with the requisite slimming black. There were so many wearable looks that looked comfortable and flattering on non-model bodies that I could see the audience mentally checking off on their ‘to buy’ list.

Hoffman’s white bikinis featuring pops of print at the bandeau and side of the bottoms looked very relaxed and ‘chill’ as they say in Goa.

Fittingly Jimi Hendrix’s “Fire” finished up the finale and it’s easy to imagine any girl wearing these suits hearing a boy plead “Let me stand next to your fire.”

Mara Hoffman presented her Fall/Winter 2010 collection at Open house Gallery (201 Mulberry Street between Kenmare and Spring). There will also be a musical performance by Living Sacrifice-www.allforthemountain.com. Twenty live models wore looks from the Fall/Winter collection. “Being a fan of performing and visual arts, this was the perfect format to display the collection,” said Hoffman. “The setting will be mystical and cosmic with ceremonial elements incorporated to full immerse the audience and allow one to really connect with the collection.”

The Fall/Winter 2010 collection is futuristic, chic with strong feminine direction, it includes dresses and separates with mixed print and solid combos, with ruching details and different textures combined together within a single garment, as well as solid metallic gunmetal jackets. The collection features bold prints in darker tones with pops of colors such as red, greens, blues and purple. Fabrics used are washed silks, printed chiffons, silk jersey mixed with suede and velvet chiffon burnout.

Mara Hoffman will be having a sample sale starting December 10th- 12th.

I have been itching to write this post since Saturday night, and all you lovely folks who follow my seemingly boring ass on Twitter would know. Not only was I happy to finally be back to my home (which I haven’t seen in quite some time), but I was able to bring an amazing fashion event with me! Runway 2.0 was Saturday night at the Burchfield Penney Art Center on the Buffao State College campus. The event was a great fundraiser for the blossuming fashion program that BSC has been developing over the past few years. Erin Habes (a professor at the school and buyer for Krudmart) was kind enough to ask little old me to judge the event, and I am glad I was around to do so!

The show featured designs from past alumni, current students, and local Buffalo designers as well. I was lucky enough to see some wonderful pieces from designers like Melitza Rodriguez, Tanisha Harris, David Brinson, Barbara Poletowski, Fausto Abreu, Meaghan Rea, Tetsuma Ueda, Crystal Robbins, Ti Zhou, Chelsea Bennett, Julia Oakes, Angela Brown, Tiffany Landon, New Era Caps, Girls In Skirts, Aella, Kezia Pearson, Kate Palame, Morgen Love, Mara Hoffman, and Mr. Buffalo Fashion himself Adam Lippes. It’s not hard to see that this was not a small little show. I have to give all the participants and designers a huge congrats, everything looked great. I was also lucky enough to work with my good friend and photographer Max Collins on getting some awesome backstage shots of all the models hanging out and getting ready as well. All for all you indies reading this I can assure you that there are some designers featured in this post that you will hearing a lot more about, an not just from me!
