Marc by Marc

Dynasty Domination

I have to admit; I was a bit saddened when some of my favorite collections and designers—such as Marc by Marc Jacobs and even Diane Von Furstenberg—showed pieces for Spring 2010 with heavy 80’s flash-back incorporated into them. I’ve never been a big fan of that era, so seeing shoulder pads being accepted as fashionable once again will take some getting used to.

Patterns you’ve really only seen in reruns of The Cosby Show have suddenly thrown themselves back into major fashion again, along with a kaleidoscope of colors. Beyonce even sported a dress at the MTV Video Music Awards that looked all too much like a dress Joan Collins once wore on the show Dynasty.

So, find your crimper and big, floppy bow and get ready to look like you stepped out of a classic John Hughes movie this upcoming spring.

RUNWAY RUNDOWN: DKNY

RUNWAY RUNDOWN: DKNY fashionA takeback to the 90s, Donna Karen puts on the runway what we think was ’so last season.’ A bit much for my take, there seems to be a large gap between Donna Karen collection and DKNY (guess I always except a Marc Jacobs vs Marc by Marc ratio).

I was flipping through old issues of i-D, Dazed and Confused and Men’s Vogue while I was home in Buffalo over the holiday weekend. I knew I spotted a trend among male models, but it didn’t hit me until I saw Cole Mohr on the Marc by Marc Jacobs billboard in SoHo one last time…

The Trend: baby-faced, skinny, tattooed, pierced, punk rocking models who look like they just got kicked out of the high school homecoming dance for reeking of cheap beer. Bingo.

Punk boys have been all over the editorials and up and down the runways recently. I absolutely love the awkward, but adorable, high school dropout look…and It looks like I’m not the only one! With Marc Jacobs and Hedi Slimane as avid fans of this look, it seems that the baby-faced punks will be scoring high fashion editorials and shows for years to come. But sorry ladies, just because you look like a prepubescent rocker doesn’t mean your gauged ears and inked arms are fully acceptable in the high fashion industry. It’s unfair, I know…but that’s just the way it is.

Men's Pea Coat: $599.99

Thanks to the non-existent Mike & Chris sample sale yesterday (can you tell I’m still bitter about that?), I didn’t stand a chance trying to snag the Comme des Garcons for H&M leftovers. This morning, I decided to check out eBay to see exactly how much people were reselling the limited edition collection for. Take a look at the prices…these people are crazy. With the economy the way it is, do people honestly think someone is going to cough up $600 for a typical black pea coat? For that price you could buy TWO of the awesome YMC belted coats from Oak!  Nearly $115 for a simple black wallet? Give it a month or so and the zipper on that wallet will be broken. Personally, I’d rather save that money and splurge on a Marc by Marc zip around wallet that will actually last me several years! And sorry Corey, I know you love your polka-dot tee, but buying something so simple for $100 on eBay is ridiculous!

I would really like to know how much these pieces actually cost to make, how many 4-year-olds were forced to sew them in sweat shops and why on earth some people would re-buy these items for such absurd prices.
