Although it’s easy to be underwhelmed by any dresses coming before the Oscars, there are some ladies who really turned it out last night. We put our top 10 at the beginning of the gallery for your viewing pleasure. All photos from Huffington Post Style.

Heidi Klum will be portrayed by Angela Lindvall. The role of Nina Garcia will be played by Marchesa‘s Georgina Chapman. Joanna Coles, editor-in-chief of Marie Claire will star as mentor-in residence Tim Gunn. And returning to the fashion reality competition show stage is Isaac Mizrahi as Michael Kors. Guest judges will include Diane von Furstenberg, Miranda Kerr, Miss Piggy, Pharrell Williams, Nanette Lepore, Rachel Roy, Catherine Malandrino, and Mark Badgley and James Mischka.

The All-Stars in question are past Runway contestants who weren’t quite up to snuff, such as Austin Scarlett, Sweet P, Kara Janx and that much-reviled whiny copycat, Kenley Collins. Personally, I stopped watching Project Runway as soon as it hopped from Bravo to Lifetime,  deciding along the way that a season in L.A. was a good idea, but this new spin-off series could bring some much-needed fresh air into the franchise.

The All-Stars will compete for a handsome set of prizes, the most lucrative in Runway history: “an exclusive designer boutique in select Neiman Marcus stores and on neimanmarcus.com; $100,000 in technology and office space to help expand their business from HP and Intel; $100,000 cash from L’Oréal Paris; a feature spread in Marie Claire, for which he or she will serve as a guest editor for one year, and a sewing and embroidery studio provided by Brother International.” Well, at least they made returning to the scene of one’s former and very public embarrassment suitably enticing.

Will you watch Project Runway All-Stars when it premieres January 5 on Lifetime, television for women unemployed gay men? [WWD]

Fashion editor Camilla Nickerson outfits Theron in Alexander McQueen, Marchesa, Christoper Kane and Salvatore Ferragamo for the aquatic-themed shoot. I’m assuming the water represents rebirth and all that jazz — considering Theron’s split from  Stuart Townsend and her new film with director Jason Reitman, Young Adult – but Leibovitz comes up dry once again.*

And what’s happening with the underwater shot? Looks like Leibovitz employed the same Photoshopper from those Kardashian Kollection Sears catalogs.

Days after that story broke, Harvey Weinstein has followed SJP out to pasture, leaving the company in which he had equity stake for the past few years. Well, the good news is Halston’s parent company, Hilco, is still confident in the label — at least someone is — as its seen recent growth in retail.

Here are the BEST DRESSED of the MTV Movie Awards, the star students of the night scoring As and Bs on their style report cards.

Elle Fanning in D&G Spring 2011 – I want to adopt Elle as my own first born child -  she is so adorable. I love this floral romper with the floral wedges. Where else and on who can an overload of prints work this well?

Leighton Meester in Balmain Fall 2011 – Although she makes a lot of mistakes and does poorly in style school sometimes, I still stand by Leighton. She looks perfect in this bling-encrusted Balmain dress. I’m glad to see her at the top of the list for once.

Emma Stone in Bottega Veneta Fall 2011 – Congratulations Emma for finally making my best dressed list! She looks phenomenal with her red-again hair in this golden, lacy frock. The orange accessories are PERFECT.

Hailee Steinfeld in Louis Vuitton – Many think Hailee looks too old in this sequin-adorned Louis Vuitton suit, but I think she looks youthful and chic. Unfortunately, I hate the shirt she is wearing underneath and wish she would have chosen something brighter and not so stiff.

Lil Mama in Sherri Hill Fall 2011 – This little lady sometimes tries too hard and ends up looking completely ridiculous on the red carpet. But Lil Mama got it right this time in a perfectly-fitting strapless mini dress. She is put-together and sexy without looking ridiculous.

Emma Watson in Marchesa - I thought this look was a little safe for Emma, but it grew on me as I looked through all the red carpet photos from last night. It’s difficult to pull-off a stark white dress and even more so if it’s this short. This is a great feminine look with the added edge of the Brian Atwood pumps.

On to the MOST BORING looks of the night. The Cs of the red carpet, these ladies could have tried a lot harder.

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley in Dolce & Gabbana Fall 2011 -  I usually LOVE animal print, so I’m surprised I’m not phased by this. But a short animal print dress with the half-up, half-down hair? Ehhh I need something more from a gorgeous gal like Rosie. It would have made a huge difference if the dress was left longer like it was shown on the runway.

Blake Lively in Michael Kors - If Blake was going to a sophisticated fashion event, this would be an A++. But for an MTV awards show? Where is the insane Chanel Couture that could be blowing all these tartlets out of the water? If you have the access, use it!

Reese Witherspoon in Zac Posen Pre-Fall 2011 – Snore. Snoring at the hair, the dress, the shoes. Snoring at you Reese Witherspoon, who has been doing so well and just had to go and disappoint when you were receiving the post “prestigious” MTV Movie Award possible.

Selena Gomez in Giambattista Valli Spring 2011 – Talk about looking too old. Fit for a grandmother, this ensemble is just too tedious for MTV. Selena wowed us at the Billboards and must be tired because she is not at work.

Here we are ladies and gentlemen, the WORST DRESSED of the MTV Movie Awards. These ladies receive Ds and Fs for their detestable fashion sense.

Jessica Szohr in Alice + Olivia Fall 2011 – AHHHH!! This is a paisley nightmare! Hide your kids, hide your wife because this is the scariest clown I’ve ever seen. Perfect example of how an awesome runway piece looks like shit in real life. Look at Jessica’s face, she’s as horrified as we are.

Kristen Stewart in Balmain - Someone finally managed to look like a hooker in Balmain. Kristen Stewart continues to neglect her fashion studies in this too short, terribly styled studded and safety pinned number. The hair is bad, the shoes are wrong and she is not working this dress the way it needs to be worked.

Mila Kunis in Balmain Fall 2011 – Poor Balmain, so much drama as of late. I am obsessed with this skirt, but what in god’s name was Mila wearing on top? It looks like she was half changed into her pajamas, someone rang the doorbell and she had to walk outside like this. Justin’s hands would be a more fashionable choice.

Amanda Bynes in Hervé Léger – Congratulations Amanda for winning the WORST DRESSED award by a landslide. Not only does this dress make her look saggy all around, but she chose the ugliest shoes Christian Louboutin has ever designed. Tan, turquoise, black, white – it’s a rainbow of disaster on the red carpet.

Brooke just does not do it for me, and this look is not on her side. The bottom is too tight, and the dress as a whole is too young for her. She looks stiff and completely confused, like she doesn’t know where the hell she is. Brooke needs to get her act together before people completely forget she was ever a model at all.

In collaboration with Vogue Italia, Campbell staged the runway show in Cannes and paraded looks by Yves Saint Laurent, Marchesa and Alexander McQueen.

Fonda, who at 73 gave a lot of the other models a runway run for their money — particularly these girls — came out to raucous applause as she closed the show in a Marchesa gown. [Telegraph]

I am thrilled that Rachel chose this Marchesa dress from the fall 2011 line – it was one of my favorites from the collection. She looks gorgeous, but I really wish her hair would have been up. I think that is such a huge factor in letting the statement factor of this dress shine through.

I think Penelope looks stunning in her custom Marchesa off-the-shoulder gown, but I also think she look overdressed for a movie premiere. I understand Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides is a huge release, but she could have easily saved this dress for an awards show. Regardless, she looks gorgeous as always.

*Andre Leon Talley wins the award for best purple tent. As always, his volumes are amazing.

Let’s take a look at the Best Dressed of the night. This category has quite a bit of people, as it should, for fashion’s biggest event. These were the As and high Bs, the working girls.

Shalom Harlow is my pick for BEST DRESSED in Marchesa. This is what the Met Ball is all about – she looks breathtaking in that gown.

I almost fell over when I saw Christina Ricci in Zac Posen. She never ages a day and looks super sexy in this sheer number.

I found Mary-Kate’s dress underwhelming, but Ashley Olsen looks ravishing in vintage Dior Haute Couture. The whole look is perfect.

Elle Fanning looks like a little couture doll in Valentino. She is so outshining her sister, it’s not even fair.

Rihanna has been looking haggard lately, so I was pleasantly surprised at how elegant she was in this striking Stella McCartney gown.

Iman, also in Stella McCartney, turned it out in a metallic gold jumpsuit. A little draggy, a lot amazing.

Karolina Kurkova in a spring 2011 Jean Paul Gaultier lace legging-dress creation. If the models can’t do it, who can?

I love this Prabal Gurung gown and funky jewelry on Ciara. White could be difficult to pull off at the ball, but she did it right.

Even though Crystal Renn is too skinny for my taste, she is an absolute vision in Alexander McQueen. I need my hair to look like this.

After getting ready in a Barneys window yesterday, Daphne Guiness showed up in McQueen. Perfect, amazing, stuns.

I loved Ginnifer Goodwin‘s look from the moment  I saw it. Then I realized it was custom Topshop. Damn she makes it look good.

Naomi Campbell looks like the queen she is in custom McQueen. She wears the sedatives well too.

Hamish Bowles looks like a true gentleman in custom McQueen. Love it from head to toe.

I always wait with baited breath to see what Blake Lively is wearing. She obviously did not disappoint in a Chanel toga.

New York’s best couple showed up looking better than ever. Beyonce is working that Emilio Pucci gown like whoa.

Queen Bitch Anna Wintour gave her best smile to the camera and looks like a shiny grandiose statue in Chanel.

On to the Most Boring of the night. On any other occasion, these folks would have looked great (probably). Unfortunately, this also means they’re the Cs of the Met Ball.

I’m sleeping. Zoe Saldana is usually among the best dressed. Why did she choose this boring Calvin Klein for the biggest fashion night of the year?

Leighton Meester is amazing, but she has trouble getting it right. Different shoes and hair would have done this Louis Vuitton dress more justice.

I love this Michael Kors dress on Emma Roberts, but she has the body to wear something more over the top on a night like this.

Madonna, the Material Girl herself, definitely could have done better than this Stella McCartney dress. Pretty, but boring.

I’m actually quite obsessed with this Miu Miu dress Michelle Williams is wearing. But I would wear this to a nice dinner, not a gala.

And now ladies and gentleman, the Worst Dressed of the night. These are the Ds and Fs of the Met Ball, the creme de la creme of mistakes.

ARGH! Christina Hendricks used to dress so well! This Carolina Herrera gown is an unflattering fit and color on her.

Oh dear. Hate to say it Alicia Keys, but it looks like you’re wearing a giant turd instead of Givenchy. Brown jacket AND dress is NOT fly.

Jennifer Lopez looks like a halfway plucked bloody chicken. Matchy-matchy lipstick, bag and Gucci is a no go.

I thought Chloe Sevigny would make McQueen look good, but I was wrong. The hair is awful and the dress fits like she grabbed it off some rack.

Sorry to say it Kate Hudson, but this Stella McCartney is not a cute pregnant lady dress. And whatever is on your head isn’t working either.

Nooooo! In the rush of preparing for the gala, Lucy Liu forgot to get a wax! Oh wait, that’s just her looking blech in Vionnet.

LESTER @LesFabian: “Well, as a simple gal with simple tastes, I would suggest this little Dior Spring 2007 Haute Couture number that says everything a wedding dress ought to for a princess-to-be, i.e. I’m infinitely better than you could ever hope to be. I’d suggest you request it in red, though, since your really not fooling anyone.”

AMANDA @crystlmeatballs: “From Alexander McQueen’s Spring 2011 collection, it’s whimsical, gilded, lightly provocative and straight from the fashion house of Britain’s greatest visionary. You should wear this dress, hands down. I secretly have this dress saved in the archives of what I want my own to look like, but I’ll let you have it.”

SAMANTHA @iamsamlim: “I picked this dress by Marchesa because its full tulle skirt represents the uber-princess and the top is modern, romantic, yet still appropriate for your royal wedding.”

McARTHUR @mcarthurjoseph: “You know Kate, it’s not a REAL wedding unless there’s some Vera Wang.”

JENN @JennJann: “I really love the trendy blush color Reese Witherspoon wore and such a fan of understated elegance.  This Vera Wang gown has hints of couture. How can you be a princess without couture?”

BRAD @Bradlyman: “This is my pick. Jeremy Brandrick is such a talented designer who’s now exclusively doing wedding gowns. He trained at Central St Martins College in London along with McQueen, McCartney, and Galliano. His haute aesthetic would exude a princess out of you.”

JESSY @jessylalancette: “I like this Amsale gown for its simplicity. You could surprise us with something simply beautiful.”

ALEX @pachodak: “I this THIS is the perfect dress. Hands down. It just needed a hat.”

JOSH @LinamLogic: “Let’s keep it in the family. Diana wore an Elizabeth Emanuel dress with a 25-foot train, which was described by some as ‘the dress of the century.’ While the piece has been part of a traveling museum collection, I think you could pull a few strings. Hand-me-down?”

JESSICA (me) @JessicaLapidos: “With cloud-like details ruffling down layers and layers of sheer non-froufy-fluff, this Elie Saab gown is royally inviting a princess like you to wear it.”

Love ‘em? Hate ‘em? Royally freaked out by the head transplants? What will she wear?!? IT’S KILLING US!! Tweet us your thoughts…..and I think @pachodak might need a word or two about what it means to be a princess bride.

- Red carpet favorite Marchesa is hopping into less formal territory with its one-off Playboy Bunny costume design for the new Playboy Club opening in London June 4th. Using the original iconic costume design, Georgina Chapman and co. added “Marchesa’s signature details, such as hand draping and embroidery.” I better not see a forty-foot train of tulle cascading from that bunny tail. [Vogue]

- Anna Wintour parachuted into the J. Crew store on Fifth Ave to celebrate CFDA winner Billy Reid and the two designers who subsequently ate his dust, Prabal Gurung and Eddie Borgo.  All three designed capsule collections for the Crew; Reid’s seven piece collection is available online now through May with Gurung’s premiering in June and Borgo’s in July. 1. Invest in a tent: Not to camp in silly, to wear! Tent dresses are the best fat day cures in the whole entire world. Just make sure it fits you well through the chest and arms to avoid looking like you’re wearing an actual tent; that’s when this look becomes unflattering. 2. Wear pants at your actual waist: Here’s the thing, low rise pants are not flattering if you carry extra weight in your stomach. Try a pair of high-waisted pants that sit at your natural waist, the smallest part of your stomach. 3. Opt for an empire waist: When the waist of a dress sits above your natural waist and flows into an A-line skirt, it draws attention up and away from your problem area. 4. Go vintage shopping: They don’t make ‘em like they used to, that’s for sure. In an age of fast fashion and mass produced everything, garments are not made of the same high quality they once were. Dresses from the 50s and 60s were tailored to actually fit a woman’s body correctly and give her a waist. 5. Buy a bra that fits: And no excuses! - The Wall Street Journal‘s profile on Vogue editrix Anna Wintour is enlightening. Nicole wore a giant cotton ball of a gown by Marchesa, featuring layers and layers of tulle  and organza with a sexy but subtle keyhole cut-out for her wedding to Joel Madden on Saturday. Usually I’m not really a fan of Marchesa and their princess/fairy/grecian confections that are all but ubiquitous on the red carpet, but this dress suits Nicole perfectly. She’s developed a really strong style over the years and this wedding dress is sort of her crowning moment.

Richie was inspired by screen and fashion icon Grace Kelly‘s wedding dress, from her marriage to Prince Rainier III of Monaco in 1956:

Le sigh. Now I’m getting all nostalgic. Remember when she was just Paris’ funny, kind of sloppy bff? And then when she was Lindsay’s unhealthily skinny, bitchy bff?  Now, look at her. A mother? A wife? A…dear I say…a lady? I can just see papa Lionel dancing on the ceiling from joy. Probably in some unfortunate spandex pants but let’s not have that ruin the moment.

I think the gown is a little too dressed-up for an MTV awards show but can’t really complain because she does look great.

Because nothing goes better with your ballerina castoffs than a business blazer, Christina wore this rather bizarre Marchesa number to a benefit at the New York Public Library last night. We might like this casual-kooky combo if it didn’t look like our girl had a rather unfortunate growth sprouting from her nether regions.

The show started off with a Glee-themed fagtastic bang with Tina Fey, Jane Lynch, Jon Hamm and last living Golden Girl Betty White (some say she’s overexposed, but she’s 800 years old and could go any minute so I’ll take as much as I can, thank you) joining the Glee kids and Fallon for a cover of “Born to Run.” It was pretty much downhill from there, but it was a gentle and slow descent, made more comfortable by getting all the fun awards out early.

Proving that there is a god somewhere, Jane Lynch (woefully sans a pantsuit yet again) picked up the Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy. Eric Stonestreet won a well-deserved Outstanding Supporting Actor for Modern Family, which also went home with the Outstanding Comedy Series trophy at the end of the night.

Edie Falco won her fourth Emmy, this time for Lead Actress in a Comedy Series. A controversial choice, perhaps, but Carmine Soprano literally shits Emmys . I’m holding out hope for Amy Poehler next year, though, that is if Parks and Rec makes it that long. And some guy from some show on CBS I will continue to ignore, I mean, Jim Parsons won Lead Actor.

My frequent nemesis January Jones might have lost to Kyra Sedgwick for Outstanding Lead Actress in  a Drama, but she won best dressed in my book, wearing a gorgeous Atelier Versace gown. Though I wish she had done her hair in a chignon and left the messy bed head hair to Cammy Diaz.

Aaron Paul -- Wrap him up, I'll take him to go.

Bryan Cranston picked up his third consecutive Emmy for Lead Actor for Breaking Bad and his hottie of a co-star Aaron Paul won for Supporting. Newcomer Archie Panjabi took home Outstanding Supporting Actress for The Good Wife. Then Mad Men sauntered off with the Outstanding Drama Series for the third year in a row.

Though Betty White and Neil Patrick Harris won for their guest starring roles on SNL and Glee, respectively, their trophies were handed out at the Shmemmys earlier, thus robbing us of what would surely have been a hot and heavy make-out session everyone…?…the gays…?…okay, that I have been anticipating since the nominees were announced.

That was one of a few disappointments in an otherwise — dare I say it? — great show. The awards, for the most part, went to the right people and I got to scream at Brittany Murphy and Rue McClanahan one more time during the In Memoriam slideshow. The fashion at the Emmys, however, left a lot to be desired.

The big theme of the night was Greek/Egyptian, with a lot of one shoulders, goddess gowns and geometric necklines, heavy on the jewelry and metallics.

The red carpet was a big snore, except for a few bright spots, such as Anna Paquin in Alexander McQueen and the aforementioned Betty Draper.

From what I’ve been reading, most people hate both of these looks, but that’s the price you pay for bringing high fashion to American TV sets.  There were, admittedly, some horrible missteps and yes I am looking at you Heidi Klum.

Hot tranny mess, working that tired drag for all its worth

The usually flawless supermodel and Emmy nominee (?) opted for a Marchesa mini. Meanwhile, if I never see another Marchesa gown on the red carpet I could die happy. The amazing Lauren Graham also faltered a bit in Yigal Azrouël, riding that damned Grecian theme straight into hell.

Is that bracelet bulletproof?

Lea Michele went overboard with the ruffles in Oscar de la Renta and her boobs always looked as if they were about to jump ship as well.

She should have taken a cue from co-star Dianna Argon who looked beautiful in  Carolina Herrera.

I would have liked the dress to be a little shorter, however, about mid-calf,  to play off a 50s silhouette. But, as the New Directions kids put it, you can’t always get what you want. Then again, at least Lea didn’t follow in the tranny footsteps of her other castmate, Naya Rivera, who apparently thought she was going to a quinceañera.

God bless her for trying.

I can’t wait to hear what Joan Rivers has to say about all this, but until then, what’s your opinion? Who looked stunning and who just looked stunned?

The first two dresses appear as though they were taken from this season’s designer offerings. The first could easily be Marchesa or Carolina Herrera and the second, Vionnet, Halston, or Donna Karan, just to name a few.

This is an impeccable twosome! While both are gorgeous, the first is my favorite….such delicate and painstaking details. Another which would translate well with today’s styles.

This magnificent work of art is my absolute favorite…..it screams Alexander McQueen! When I see dresses such as this, I’m reminded of why I love to watch the old black and white movies of the 20′s and 30′s.

The second dress is beautiful and also appears as one that we might see from today’s designers.

The dress on the right is another delicate and feminine lovely with a Vionnet or Halston Heritage look.

Ah……both are equally lovely. In the two of these, I see Valentino; especially the dress on the right.

The dress on the right is interesting looking, almost as though there is a story attached. In this one I see Anna Sui.

Nice and simple, yet beautiful. I would love to see the outfits without the vests.

These appear as versions of the booties that we wear today….perhaps Louis Vuitton and Miu Miu.

NEW YORK — From a visual of Washington Square Arch framing the entrance to Lenny Kravitz’s “American Song” serving as the soundtrack to the finale photo and video installation of America’s female icons then and now, the Costume Institute’s “American Woman: Fashioning a National Identity” exhibit feels like a journey through this country’s past through the fashion lens.

In a series of atmospheric oval and circular rooms, the Metropolitan Museum of Art brings to life the different stages of the American female identity, from “The Heiress” in a room inspired by Mrs. Astor’s Newport mansion and garments by Charles Frederick Worth, to “The Gibson Girl” exploring sports in all seasons, and “The Bohemian,” who seems right at home in environs inspired by the Tiffany Studios.

The exhibit strikes a political note in a gallery devoted to “Suffragists” and “Patriots” with actual footage of the movement marches and banners from the era, which is followed by “The Flapper,” which represents the sexual and economic emancipation of women in a skyscraper backdrop loosely inspired by Tamara de Lempicka’s Art Deco paintings, according to curator Andrew Bolton.

Perhaps the most quintessential symbol of America to the world could well be the “Screen Siren.” It features mannequins in glamorous gowns set against screens showing scenes from famous Thirties movies, and including Hollywood icons such as Marlene Dietrich, Greta Garbo, Jean Harlow, Joan Crawford and Rita Hayworth.

Lenox Corportation’s hired  Marchesa’s Georgina Chapman and Keren Craig to design tableware. They’re calling it “a couture tabletop collection,”each being inspired by a Marchesa dress, eight in total so far.

Behind the scenes at Marchesa’s spring 2010 show, Talia Shobrook for NARS Cosmetics gives us the step-by-step rundown on how to achieve the make-up seen in the show.

I love how they incorporate the feathers from the collection into the eyelashes. It gives it a subtle twist without distracting from the dresses. I think this would be a fun, eye-catching look to try for the spring.

Walking into the Chelsea Museum alongside Brooklyn Decker, (also see Anna, Tonne, Nicole Richie) and being handed a glass of Dom Perignon was the only way (literally) to view Georgina Chapman’s fall 2010 showcase. The room had a cool vibe of fashion lovers, industry greats, socialites, and celebrities all mingling in the midst of artistry on live models. The amount of detail and handwork on each dress blew me away – each paired with an equally stunning pair of Loubs! The ironic reality of showing a line like this in a museum, is the true appreciation of the art that is Fashion Design. Hats off to the stunningly charming Georgina for bringing her genius to life!

Lilac has been seen popping up in many designers ready-to-wear lines for spring 2010. Designers like Isaac Mizrahi, Zac Posen, Cynthia Rowley, and Marchesa have all incorporated various shades of this purple color into their latest collections. We saw this hue start to emerge last spring, even appearing in the form of lipstick, but I definitely think you’re going to be seeing a whole lot more of it next year.

Sorry to those of you who dislike any and all things purple, but it seems as if it’s here to stay a little longer.

Heidi is one of the most beautiful women walking this planet, she never fails to impress, especially not at last night’s Emmy Awards, where she looked absolutely stunning in a Marchesa gown.
