At the recent New Yorker Festival’s Fashion Forward panel Naeem Khan, Philip Lim, Maria Cornejo and Marcus Wainwright were all asked if they’d prefer to dress Michelle Obama or Carla Bruni.

All answered Michelle and then Cornejo added, “I’ve met Carla Bruni before, and there’s not much up there. [Michelle]‘s actually doing things that are interesting. She’s not just arm candy.”

Last night, The Council of Fashion Designers of America announced the nominations for the 2010 CFDA Fashion Awards. The winners will be announced at the annual gala on June 7 at Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center.

The Womenswear Designer of the Yearnominees are: Alexander Wang, Marc Jacobs, Donna Karen

The Menswear Designer of the Year nominees are: Michael Bastian, Tom Ford, and David Neville & Marcus Wainwright for Rag & Bone.

For Accessory Designer of the Year Award the nominees are: Alexis Bittar, Lazaro Hernandez & Jack McCollough for Proenza Schouler, and Marc Jacobs.

The Swarovski Award for Womenswear: Joseph Altuzarra, Prabal Gurung, and Jason Wu

The  Swarovski Award for Menswear: Richard Chai, Patrik Ervell, and Simon Spurr.

For Swarovski Award for Accessory Design: Eddie Borgo, Dana Lorenz, and Alexander Wang.

The Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award will be presented to Michael Kors.

The CFDA Board of Directors chose to honor Alexander McQueen with their Special Tribute Award.

Eugenia Sheppard Award – Kim Hastreiter, Paper Magazine

International Award – Christopher Bailey for Burberry

Fashion Icon Award – Iman

Eleanor Lambert Award – Tonne Goodman, Vogue

Think dark, natural and resilient layering and you’ve got Rag & Bone Fall 2010 down to a science!

Fall 2010 marked a pivotal collection for Rag & Bone designers Marcus Wainwright and David Neville. Whereas previous collections showcased a girl with androgynous tendencies, the Rag & Bone Fall 2010 collection was really the first strictly womenswear line we’ve seen from the designers. Gathering inspiration from 1920s Everest expeditions, Wainwright and Neville brought us a modernized vintage collection with overwhelming utility pieces. From tweed jackets to sweater dresses and plaid ponchos to Rag & Bone’s atypical oversized knit scarf, the collection screams Rag & Bone without being overly masculine for a change.

Designers Marcus Wainwright and David Neville built their Pre-Fall 2010 collection around the idea “buy-now-wear-now,” hence the leather tank, thermal leggings, suede bomber, light wool blazer and sheer tops. As per usual, there’s some awesome leather accessories to be had and some covetable, old-school shoes. With such superb styling, it’s hard not to want everything from this collection!

Designers David Neville and Marcus Wainwright really tapped into an incredible, timeless androgyny with slouchy, somewhat drop-crotch, pants for the ladies as well as some gorgeous jackets and leathers. The men’s looks are both classic and edgy, tight pants with military trenches and flannel pants with suit-coats. All in all, the collection was another stunner to add to the mix with a majority of several year-round, wearable pieces.

It seems to me that Rag & Bone designers David Neville and Marcus Wainwright decided to play it safe with what they know “works” nowadays. We’ve seen it time and time again, the tomboy look is in, and while many designers throw in that extra “umph” to make a collection unique, Neville and Wainwright simply let the styling do all the talking. I’ll agree, the styling is great and the pieces aren’t bad at all, I just wish Rag & Bone gave us something new to shop for. I have drop-crotch pants. I have a shrunken bomber jacket. I have boyfriend jeans. I have an oversized denim shirt. I have a cropped blazer. And I’m pretty sure any girl who is on top of the fashion scene does too.

When Marcus Wainwright and David Neville decided to create a resort collection, they had no clue what the results would be. They were grazed with a pleasant surprise. Marcus and David’s label, Rag and Bone, withholds a resort 09 collection abundant in creativity and timeless style. Dresses, shirts, coats and jackets sit upon the backs of models in confidence. Rag and Bone doesn’t always play it safe; their clothing is edgy in a way that doesn’t kill the outfit. The pieces are wearable, and thanks to two great designers with the ability to manipulate design and color, we’re liking what we see.
