As soon as Madonna high-kicked her way onto MTV, a style icon was born. Girls everywhere started emulating her look: the lace gloves, the dangly earrings, the armful of bangles, the giant Ray-Bans, the hair bow and even the mole which comes and goes as it pleases over the years.

Even though well into her hundreds, Madge is still known today as the Material Girl thanks in part to this iconic clip in which she donned her best Marilyn-Monroe-in-Gentlemen-Prefer-Blonds drag and cooed the mantra of the Reagan 80s.

Now sporting a cropped do, Madonna innovated the no-pants look so popular nowadays with, oh, every single poptart -- from Lady Gaga to Beyoncé to Rihanna. But make no bones about it, Madge was going sans pants while those ladies were still pantless in diapers.

Madonna went back to her roots with this one -- literally. She's been a blond for most of her celebrity life so it's easy to forget that Madonna Louise Veronica Ciccone is -- like most blonds -- really a brunette.

Directed by The Social Network's David Fincher, Madonna pays tribute to the classic 1927 silent film Metropolis and the gender-bending glamour of Marlene Dietrich with the most expensive video made at the time at a cost of $5 million. An epic by all means, the video has been more or less blatantly copied by both Christina Aguilera and Gaga. But the original still stands head and shoulder pads above the rest.

Madge continued her magnificent obsession with old Hollywood in this, her greatest sartorial achievement to date. "Vogue" was Madonna's love letter to 30s and 40s glamour -- "Greta Garbo and Monroe, Dietrich and Dimaggio" -- all wrapped up chicly in the voguing trend brought to light by the classic documentary Paris Is Burning. Every thing about this video and every look in it is absolutely flawless -- particularly this blouse giving the illusion of being sheer and the Veronica Lake wave she sports intermittently throughout.

Directed by fashion photographer Fabien Baron and featuring a cameo from 90s music video staple Naomi Campbell, "Erotica" was Madonna's 2nd video banned from MTV after "Justify My Love" two years prior. But all controversy aside, have you ever seen a more chic dominatrix? Bonus points for the gold tooth.

Madonna really classed it up for this video and for good reason. At the time she was lobbying to play the role of Eva Perón in Evita, which of course she subsequently got. Is it any wonder, what with her perfectly painted pout, elbow-length opera gloves and the pièce de résistance -- that stunning veil -- that Argentina would want to cry for her?

Then of course that class went flying out the window. Donning a catsuit and cornrows, Madonna literally and figuratively said "fuck you" to all of her critics. Over a decade later, Xtina wore a very similar look in "Not Myself Tonight," but one good catsuit deserves another.

After a hiatus that saw the birth of the future messiah known as Lourdes Leon, Madonna came roaring back with "Frozen." Wearing beautifully gothic gowns by a then-unknown Olivier Theyskens, Madonna heralded yet another reinvention: that of the Eastern-enlightened earth mother. Who knew the Kabbalah thing would last this long?

Madonna really decided to pimp herself out for "Music" -- white fur coat, white jumpsuit and enough jewelry to make even the balling-est rapper blanch. With Madonna, you either go bling or you go home.

Inching ever closer to the half century mark, Madonna showed no signs of slowing down and stripped off her pants once again to show the kids how it's done. Sporting a deliciously retro leotard under a wrap blouse and Farrah Fawcet's iconic do, the Material Girl proved that some things just get better with age.

For their S/S 2012 issue, USED Magazine called upon British impersonator Suzie Kennedy in their fashion editorial ” Marilyn Moment.” Styled in retro looks by Prada, Commes des Garçons and Dries van Noten‘s spring collections by stylist Katy Lassen, Kennedy gives 100% Monroe with playful smiles and pin-up girl poses, captured by photographer Nik Hartley.

The Postman Always Rings Twice (1946) "Sweater Girl" Lana Turner was at her best and sultriest as Cora Smith, a dissatisfied housewife who manipulates a drifter into murdering her husband. No one said being a bombshell was safe, kids.

Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953) What would this list be without the ultimate bombshell, Marilyn Monroe? With fellow explosive lady Jane Russell, Marilyn steams up the screen while befriending diamonds and sugar daddies.

Carmen Jones (1954) Dorothy Dandridge was a rarity in the 50s -- a blacktress who wasn't resigned to roles as domestics. In this all black adaptation of Bizet's opera, Dandridge broke all the rules -- and earned an Oscar nomination (the first Lead Actress nom for an African American, #nbd) -- as the unapologetically sexy title anti-heroine -- though this one ends with death also. The Girl Can't Help It (1956) Following the popularity of Seven Year Itch and the blonde bombshell archetype, Hollywood did what it did best and bled a trend for all its worth. Enter Jayne Mansfield and her hypnotizing curves -- which, as the title suggests, she can't help.

One Million Years B.C. (1966) Though she only had three lines in the film, Raquel Welch's fur bikini spoke volumes and launched a new age of bombshell.

Barbarella (1968) Along with a scantily-clad Welch, a scantily-clad Jane Fonda (wearing, when she was wearing anything, Paco Rabane, thank you very much) defined the late-60s sexpot and brought a generation of science fiction nerds successfully through puberty.

Thomas Jefferson -- Founding Father Jungle Fever Scandal broke out in 1802 when James T. Callendar, a political journalist, wrote in a Richmond newspaper that then-President Thomas Jefferson had not only had an affair with his slave, Sally Hemings, but also fathered "several" of her children. While the rumors had been circulating for years prior, Callendar's article made it general knowledge. Kennedy -- Some Like It Camelot By now everyone knows that John Fitzgerald Kennedy bedded anything with two legs and a pulse, but undoubtedly his most (in)famous liaison was with noted trainwreck, Marilyn Monroe. JFK and Marilyn spent a weekend in Palm Springs at Bing Crosby's in 1962, much to the chagrin of First Lady Jackie Kennedy. While it was just another conquest for the  lascivious world leader, Marilyn became obsessed with the pres -- of course by then she was already face-down in her pill addiction so that certainly didn't help matters. Abraham Lincoln -- Gaybraham Lincoln While he may be no vampire hunter, Honest Abe honestly didn't mind sticking his wood into his share of dudes -- allegedly. Rather, it's hard to pin the label of "homosexual" on Lincoln since the concept didn't really exist then, but rumors over the Great Emancipator's sexuality have persisted for some 150 years. Eleanor Roosevelt -- Ladies First for the First Lady Though she was not President, Eleanor Roosevelt had a large role in shaping the course of this country as First Lady. And just because her husband, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, was arguably the greatest President of the 20th century, he was known to have his fun on the side as well. Enter Lorena Hickock, a journalist with whom Eleanor formed a lifelong friendship in 1933. Their relationship is documented in a number of letters, several of a very intimate nature. For example, in a letter "Hick" -- as Eleanor affectionately called her -- writes to the FLOTUS: "Most clearly I remember your eyes, with a kind of teasing smile in them, and the feeling of that soft spot just north-east of the corner of your mouth against my lips."  Sounds like Mrs. Roosevelt had a New Deal all her own, amirite? Franco’s first of his “Episodes of an Untitled Film” will debut on February 15 on Seven’s YouTube channel with a new episode premiering every week. The aforementioned “Untitled Film” is actually titled The Death of Natalie Wood, an extended three-hour version of which will be played as part of “Rebel,” an art installation at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles. Inspired by Rebel without a Cause starring Wood and James Dean, “Rebel” also features work from Ed Ruscha, Paul McCarthy, Damon McCarthy, Aaron Young and Harmony Korine.

Franco’s interest cum obsession with James Dean is akin to Linday Lohan‘s obsession cum super-obsession with Marilyn Monroe, only to a more successful — and a more clothed — degree. You may remember that post-Freaks and Geeks Franco played Dean in a made-for-TV movie and later directed a biographical movie on Sal Mineo, Dean’s tragic sidekick in the 1955 classic. “Part of me wanted to fill it out and do a tribute to Natalie Wood, as well,” Franco said in reference to the untitled film’s title.

As for his collaboration with Seven, Franco had this to say about it: “The videos have a vintage feel to them. They feel like they are from a different era, which I think really fits with the new line that Seven had in the shoot — a lot of cool denim tops and jeans…The look of the film and the clothes feels very Seventies. We shot right on the beach and drove up the PCH [Pacific Coast Highway], so I guess you could say it’s a vintage 1970’s California dreamy feel. The movies that I cut together have a lot of weird double exposures and super- imposed images over other images, so it’s a real, I guess you could say, trip.”

The film features a cast of models/actors/artists/musicians I’ve never heard of — as well as a cameo by Franco himself — while Lily Donaldson takes center stage in the print campaign (above). And while he’s no stranger to modeling as the broodingly handsome face of Gucci for the past few seasons, Jimmy Francs is also in talks to move behind the camera to direct something for the Italian house. Either way, Lohan only plans on doing one interview to promote her Play-time and that interview, rather bafflingly, is with daytime’s favorite lesbian — you’ll get ‘em next year, Maddow – Ellen Degeneres.

The sometime Sapphic sister will stop by the Ellen Degeneres Show on December 15 to reveal her spread — I seriously almost threw up in my mouth just then — a “tasteful” and “classy” tribute to Marilyn Monroe‘s classic pictorial by Tom Kelley. The cover, though, pays homage to another Playboy classic;  the October 1971 issue which featured Darine Stern,  the first black model to appear on the cover by herself. I can’t wait to see Ellen and her audience of soccer moms and unemployed homosexuals writhe uncomfortably in their seats while Lohan discusses the artistic merit and historic significance of the shoot. As I’m sure you all know, Williams’ ex and the father of her six-year-old daughter, Heath Ledger, died of an overdose in 2008. As for the haircut, it’s become a part of her, as the Oscar-nominee explains: “I’ve really grown into it – I feel like myself with short hair. And it’s been a really long time since I had long hair, five years.”

Williams opened up to Elle to promote her new film, My Week with Marilyn, in which she plays tragic movie icon Marilyn Monroe, a role she found particularly challenging: “I’ve never been so hanging on a cliff waiting to hear what people think of a movie. Annie Leibovitz – fresh off a tour in KardashianLand — shot the cover in anticipation of Michelle’s movie, My Week with Marilyn, coming to theaters November 4th. The movie documents the tense relationship between Monroe and co-star Sir Laurence Olivier during the filming of The Prince and the Showgirl. Those two kids did not get along at all, mostly due to Monroe’s boozing, pill-popping and constant lateness, so clearly Anna Wintour heard Oscar’s bells ringing for Michelle this third time around. The idea behind this new fashion adventure is “to remodel the styles of classic icons from the past, for example, Marilyn Monroe, Grace Kelly, and Katherine Hepburn.” Well, you can never go wrong with old Hollywood, I always say, and it would be interesting to see Kitty Hep’s trouser-loving style translated by someone not really known for wearing pants.

Natali, a Parsons grad, is already outfitting an off-Broadway show and will presumably handle the lion’s share of design duties; especially since big sis is stretched thin as it is, what with the demands of being a global phenomenon and all — something I can identify with (no big deal). “I’ve been collecting for 45 years and I’m only 40,” Reynolds told the auction audience, followed hopefully by a well-timed rimshot. The dress, acquired by Reynolds in 1971 when 20th Century Fox sold off all of Marilyn’s wardrobe, was expected to sell for $2 million.

The actress amassed some 3500 items over those four decades in an effort to preserve the luster of Hollywood’s Golden Age. However, failing to find a museum ready to take the collection as a whole and driven into debt by its upkeep, Debs sold over 600 of the collection’s effects off this weekend during a 12-hour auction.

Among other items sold:  the red sequined gown and feather headdress Marilyn wore in 1953′s Gentlemen Prefer Blondes for $1.47 million; Elizabeth Taylor‘s riding clothes from 1944′s National Velvet for $73,800; Charlie Chaplin‘s bowler hat from the “Little Tramp” films for $135,300; Gary Cooper‘s uniform from 1941′s Seargent York for $67,650; Grace Kelly‘s dress from 1955′s To Catch a Thief for $450,000; Judy Garland‘s dress and ruby slippers from a screen test for 1939′s The Wizard of Oz for $1.75 million; Rudolph Valentino‘s matador outfit from 1922′s Blood and Sand for $258,000; and Audrey Hepburn‘s ascot dress from 1964′s My Fair Lady for $3.7 million. Starring roles: Elle proved such a fave with the Mulleavy sisters, they cast her in a short film for Rodarte. After stealing scenes in the independent Somewhere (2010), Elle’s going for the blockbuster gusto with J.J. Abrams‘s Super 8, out this summer.

Hailee Steinfeld

Starring roles: Along with Fanning, Steinfeld is proving that it’s never too early to be a fashionista by going on a winning streak during awards season…if only on the red carpet. Hailee nabbed an Oscar nom for showing her Grit, but for her next project, she’s going for a softer touch: she’s attached to a retelling of Sleeping Beauty.

Mia Wasikowska

Starring roles: Honestly, I’ve been more inspired by Mia’s stunning editorials as of late than her red carpet style. She first had me with W alongside her Jane Eyre co-star, Michael Fassbender then she channeled another Mia (Farrow) for Blackbook. She’s super talented and naturally beautiful plus with a slew of upcoming roles, she’ll have plenty of time to brush up on her style notes.

Blake Lively

Starring roles: When Karl Lagerfeld handpicks you to be the Chanel Purse Ambassador, you’re officially an icon. Best known for her penchant for Gossip, Blake surprised everyone with a dramatic turn in The Town (2010) and will soon be feeling up Ryan Reynold‘s muscled, latex-clad torso in this summer’s Green Lantern. Some ingenues get all the luck.

Keira Knightley

Starring roles: Another of Karl’s favorites, Keira’s been a red carpet highlight for years — I’m still screaming at her in Vera Wang at the 2006 Oscars.*  Though she was keeping a low profile for a while, Knightley came roaring back in this Chanel Couture stunner at the London premiere of Never Let Me Go. Add to that coup her recent Chanel Coco Mademoiselle short film and the upcoming romantic drama Last Night this May.

Leighton Meester

Starring roles: Though she’s the picture of Upper East Side preppy refinement as Blair Waldorf, Leighton’s personal style falls more in the delightfully quirky category. Along with Carey, Leighton is among the most fun and daring of these youthful beauties. Between gigs on Gossip Girl, Meester will next be seen seducing Dr. House himself in The Oranges out later this year.

Mila Kunis

Starring roles: Black Swan propelled Mila Kunis into a completely different stratosphere, one with awards and critical praise. Mila rose gamely to the challenge of red carpet dressing, peaking with this Alexander McQueen number from the SAG Awards. Next she’ll trade in her toe shoes to shack up with Justin Timberlake before hopping a broom for Oz: The Great and Powerful.

Michelle Williams

Starring roles: Michelle had her best style moment at this year’s Oscars when she took my breath away in this simple Chanel column… although her 2006 canary yellow Vera Wang* still holds a special place in my heart. Once upon a Creek, Michelle Williams was Katie Holmes‘ rival, so it makes poetic sense that while Katie is Jackie O, Michelle will play Marilyn Monroe in next year’s My Week With Marilyn.

Anne Hathaway

Starring roles: Honestly, Hathaway’s days as an ingénue are practically through, but having put in her Princess days, she’s succesfully transitioning to a leading lady. She managed to hold up the weight of the entire Academy Awards telecast this year on her bold, tuxedoed shoulders, so her next challenge Anne will be to claw up the screen as Catwoman in The Dark Knight Rises.

Emily Blunt is so beautiful, she has to try really hard to look like shit. She appeared celestial and effortless in this Zac Posen dress from the resort 2011 collection and channels a young Marilyn Monroe in peep toe shoes and an old-Hollywood up-do. How does the look match up to the runway styling?

Emily stayed true to the neutral runway styling with the nude shoes and pulled-back hair. I think she could have done a gold shoe to throw a little more glamour into the look. Because she is young, it would have been fresher with a splash of color or metallic. But this dress could potentially look very messy at the waist on the wrong person, and she wears it comfortably and flawlessly. And thank goodness she didn’t wear those awful gray gloves. The grade?

A-

The minus is for the shoes – especially at a children’s movie premiere, something a little more fun would have been stellar. Other than that, she looks stunning.

At an age when many of us can’t even afford a couture gown let alone make one, Maxime Simoëns has joined the official Couture calendar. What’s even more impressive, he’s the first designer to do so without ever having staged a runway.  But before sending out his first painfully constructed garment down the Parisian runway this week, the young couturier shared his inspirations and insights with Style.com.

Your first interest was film. Why did you abandon it for fashion?

Starting from the age of five or six I was totally taken by James Dean, Charlie Chaplin, and Marilyn Monroe. Then I got to film school and found it too technical and scientific—all physics, math, chemistry. I wanted to express myself more concretely; I was thinking less about science and more about the narration of a heroine. Then came Madonna’s “Drowned” World Tour and I took one look at the costumes and silhouettes—and of course the corsets—by Jean Paul Gaultier, and I knew. I went home and started to draw. It totally threw my parents off because after ten years of talking about film I turned around and told them it was going to be fashion.

What happened once you arrived in Paris?

I attended the Chambre Syndicale, and I figured that since Gaultier was my inspiration my first internship should be there. It’s very complicated to get an internship there, so I knocked on all the doors I could, and then I hand-embroidered a letter on a corset that I made out of python and painted. It took my whole summer vacation—the corset, the packaging, everything. Mr. Gaultier never saw it, but his assistants did. It made the rounds in-house and that’s how I got my internship in the accessories department.

You also interned at Christian Dior and Balenciaga. What were the takeaways there?

I was an assistant stylist in the embroidery atelier at Dior. So much happens at the last minute that it was a lesson in working on a tight deadline. As an assistant stylist at Balenciaga I worked on inspirations and embroidery, especially prints. Once, two weeks before the show, we changed everything. It was sort of a liturgical theme, and then it was flowers. Working with Nicolas [Ghesquière] is great because he pushes everything to the limit.

How did the annual fashion and photography festival at Hyères become your launching pad?

Hyères is usually about a concept, but some journalists told me that my mini-collection of seven pieces had commercial potential. We presented at Hyères and found ourselves with orders for 600 pieces, which was enormous. I couldn’t work out of my apartment anymore; we had to really set up a house. Then, unexpectedly, the numbers doubled with the second collection. At the same time, Gossip Girl stylist Eric Daman was scouting for the Paris shoot and he liked the collection. It gave us great exposure, and we [Gossip Girl stars Blake Lively and Leighton Meester] hit it off.

Is that how the couture connection came about?

Didier Grumbach [president of the Fédération Française de la Couture] had encouraged me to participate in Couture week, but I wasn’t sure at first because couture seemed to me a bit old-fashioned. In the end I decided to do it because it wasn’t about aligning with an old image, it was about a new vision of couture. The timing is perfect because ready-to-wear arrives in stores a week later.

What is your take on couture?

For me it’s not about made-to-measure. It’s more about normalized sizing with French creativity and quality. There’s a whole French generation emerging that’s interested in preserving that tradition. Since we took over Lacroix’s old atelier, we have artisanal know-how to back us up and the capacity to deliver quickly. Those two factors make [creating couture] feasible. The idea with our atelier is to support the young coalition and help consolidate the new generation of French couture.

Who are this season’s heroines?

There’s a Sofia Coppola inspiration for both parts of the collection. The first, which I call “Cherry Blossom Girl,” is dedicated to sacrificial heroines like the teenage ones in Virgin Suicides, but with glamour, geometry, and elegance. The second part is called “This, Madame, Is Paris,” which is inspired by Marie Antoinette. For my first Couture show I wanted a theme that was very French, so I chose the absolute icon.

How do you render an icon of excess in neo-minimalist times?

Instead of panniers and frills I worked a lot on fabric, in mille-feuilles and prints. One print is black marble; another is lace transformed into jacquard that is slightly industrial; and another is a pixelated version of a painting the Queen commissioned for the Petit Trianon. Then you get to a heavier jacquard that I created from droplets of blood Photoshopped and reworked in color, thread by thread. But even if her end was somber, we focused on the lighter, iconic side of things—handmade flowers in leather, white gowns embroidered with stones. And there’s a chain theme to invoke the idea of being chained to one’s destiny.

Has Sofia Coppola seen the collection?

No, but she’s invited!

Right now, I’m completely inspired by Alexa Chung (above), a British model/writer/TV host. (I’m not the only one; she just won a British Fashion Award.) Her clothes are quirky but put-together, and her makeup is the same way. Chung somehow makes neutral brown eye shadows pop yet can follow that up for her next outing with just mascara and bold fuchsia lipstick; she seems like the type of woman who would never fall into a beauty rut. In fact, my brown-to-blonde ombré hair color was inspired by her—and since she just chopped her hair into a cute shaggy bob this week, I’m thinking of trying it myself. (Allure)

Whether you go classic or current, who is your beauty icon?

Williams does resemble Monroe with the blond hair and beautiful fair skin, but it appears she is trying too hard to get that sleepy-eyed glamour down. And Williams is a little thin if you ask me, but I guess the face is what matters most. What do you think indies?

With Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Swim aboutto rock The Raleigh July 15 to 19, we knew Norma Kamali was the ideal choice for an impromptu Q&A. She’s fashioned parachutes into ball-gown skirts and can wrap a length of jersey around your body 30 different ways, but Kamali is a virtual goddess in the swim industry, designing sought-after suits that are equal parts retro and glam since 1976. With an early ambition to be a painter, Kamali (at her mother’s insistence) instead studied fashion illustration in New York, which makes utter sense when you peruse her Classic Jersey collection, imbued with a ’40s-inspired vibe that puts one in mind of Vargas girls. Her Goddess Swim collection, meanwhile, looks tailor-made for a Greek temple, and her white Ruffle bikini would suit Marilyn Monroe in Some Like It Hot just swimmingly. While she just turned 65, don’t expect Kamali to have one eye on a retirement plan: Last September she turned an Apple store into a fashion runway and earlier this spring was one of the fi rst designers to launch an iPad app. All of which means you can expect the woman who excels at bathing beauties to ride a creative wave for years to come.

Alex Kazemi: How are you? What’s the tour been like with GaGa?

Justin Tranter: I’m good, fucking amazing. We are having the time of our lives.  GaGa is a good friend of ours and it’s just been a dream come true being back on tour with her. It’s nuts that she opened up for us just a few years ago.

Kazemi:  I am happy the tour is going well. What was the journey like  making the transition from performing in small rock bars to performing in major venues across the world and settling on a huge record label like Interscope? Was it a “filthy” hustle to get where you are today?

Justin:  It was extremely glamorous in my own way. I love the fact that I was so broke that I had to collect cans and cash them at the grocery store to eat dinner, I also love the fact that I had to walk over bridges because I couldn’t afford the subway. I think all that stuff is fabulous.

Kazemi: You made it glamorous Justin.

Justin:  Haha! Exactly, anything can be glamorous as long as you make the decision. It’s great though, we love playing the dirty little bars that fit  fifty people. A lot of people would see that as pointless and a lot of work for no money, but  I guess driving six hours to play at a bar with fifty people seems kinda insane, but when it’s all you wanna do… It’s a lot of fucking fun!

Kazemi: Yeah, it is also more intimate then playing a huge venue. Well, I  am sure past experiences connected with  the trash glamorous life style you lived with inspired lyrics like “Sticky with champagne it’s OK it’s her birthday” and “I can’t pay my rent but I’m fucking gorgeous.”

Justin: Yeah, everything in the songs come from real life experiences, basically. For example “I can’t pay my rent but I’m fucking gorgeous” , was because I literally couldn’t pay my rent and I even got evicted. You can watch my eviction on YouTube. It’s pretty awesome. In my brain I thought I looked like a million bucks even when I had no money, so it all comes down to real life. With “Sticky With Champagne,” it’s  about the many times  in my life that I’ve had champagne poured on me  and that’s where that chorus comes from  A lot of my song’s are inspired by amazingly  beautiful  self destructive things and my looks.

Kazemi: “Sticky With Champagne” rules when seen live. I remember back when I saw you in December on “The Monster Ball” tour.You were holding a bottle of champagne with your face on it and poured it on the crowd and you changed on stage. Will we ever be able to purchase Justin champagne bottles? Will every Semi Precious Weapons show be that eventful?

Justin:   You will be able to buy Justin Tranter champagne bottles. I don’t know when, but it will happen! Every Semi Precious Weapons show is eventful, not always the same things happens.  The champagne bottle and changing my outfit will always be apart of the show. We feel like rock fans have really forgotten  that its OK to be really serious musicians and put on a crazy show Everyone just wants to stare at their feet and say “Look at how smart they are.” We aren’t really interested in that.

Kazemi: How the hell did you think of such crazy stage antics?

Justin:  Talking to friends and brainstorming ideas.  Our friend, Jimmy Knehans, tours with us  and makes most of my clothes. He and I brainstorm  a lot of ideas. It’s kinda my favorite thing to do. I just sit in a bar with my friends and think of ridiculous things we could do on stage that people have to watch. Haha!

Kazemi: Crafty!  So I understand your debut record “You Love You” was recently released. While recording that record who would you cite as influences on the sound/writing direction.

Justin: Patty Larkin, Sharon Stone, Jillian Welsh, Marilyn Monroe, May West, Gwen Stefani. Haha!  Usually endless amounts  of amazing woman! Oh yeah! Courtney Love  I love Hole!  “Live Through This” is one of my favorite albums of all time.

Kazemi: “Live Through This” is one of my favorite records as well.  Any male influences?

Justin:   Yes, “Miss World” is an amazing  song. David Bowie, but I don’t think he has been that big of an influence. I think he’s a genius obviously, but I’ve only listened to women for the most part.

Kazemi: Do you have a favorite track on the debut record?

Justin:  It always changes. It depends on the reactions at shows. “Statues Of Ourselves” is my favorite song on the album.

Kazemi: What inspired that track?

Justin:   It’s about a very specific party that Lady Starlight was throwing on Thursdays that only about ten people would ever go to. It was just me and my best friends and Lady Starlight DJ’ing. It was the most amazing thing ever! The song is important to the listener as well because I want people to get that “you and your friends are probably the coolest people your ever gonna meet.” The kids who are coming to see GaGa are some really fuckin cool kids and I wanna dedicate it to those people .  People should think its OK to be cool and you should think you’re cool enough to build statues of yourself.  Basically its OK to think you’re awesome.

Kazemi:  Rock N Roll self esteem boost! . Why don’t you tell me a bit about how the NYC party scene has inspired your band’s image/music?

Justin:  Hahah!  Most of the New York City party scene is pretty boring. New York  for the most part is just a bunch of girls pretending to be “Sarah Jessica Parker,” which isn’t very inspiring ! But the thing with New York is those girls trying to be “Sarah Jessica Parker” have no shame in it. Like in LA everyone pretends that their not working but in New York everyone is very open about how they are only making friends with people who can fuckin vamp up their career. Its a very exciting scene. It’s the only place I’d ever wanna live but I think the glory days of CBGB and Andy Warhol are sadly at the moment dead. I think with Lady GaGa inspiring a whole new generation of kids and SPW inspiring a whole new generation of “Rock N Roll” fans, every party Lady Starlight throws is getting bigger and bigger. So I think New York is slowly but surely getting back to the era of the 70s/Early 80s that I romanticize.

Kazemi: I guess the media’s perception about the New York party scene is pretty accurate. Didn’t Lady Starlight and GaGa open up for SPW back in 2007? How did you guys meet and what were those shows like?

Justin:  They were a fuckin blast ! We would sometimes throw a party called “Glamor” and sometimes they were just Semi Precious Weapons shows and we needed an opener and while we were selecting the slot there were a lot of bands that were boring and took themselves so seriously but then their was this girl “Lady GaGa” who was a big fan of our band. Someone told us she was a really great performer so we checked out her MySpace page and they were right. She was fuckin awesome!  So we had her open for us and it was fantastic. In New York at the time we had developed an awesome following. There was about 500-1000 kids who would come to every show/party that we were throwing and it was this amazing little world of filthy glamor. It was something that the New York Press and media wouldn’t wanna talk about. The shows  were  just in rock clubs, and there was no budget,  just a sound system and a stage and then everything else we just created with our existence.

Kazemi:. I bet those 500-1000 kids are still with you guys today! I  saw on your Twitpic of some fans holding up a sign that said “Monster Weapons.” How far along on the tour did you start to see that??

Justin:  It started happening when we got to Australia/New Zealand. I saw kids Facebook and Tweet it! For some reason we really blew up really quickly over there. We played 2 shows with GaGa and there was kids in the audience holding signs that said “Monster Weapons.” I took a picture, and put it on twitter.  I guess now all the kids have caught onto it. So now at upcoming shows we definitely see a few kids holding signs that say “Monster Weapons.”

Kazemi: Was New Zealand your favorite city you toured too?

Justin:  New Zealand is amazing. They love Rock N Roll so I love them! Haha! It’s really hard to say. We have been waiting so long and been waiting so hard to get to this moment where we are living our life on the road and playing shows for thousands of people every night.

Kazemi:  Besides music/touring, you design a jewelry line called “Fetty.” While designing the collection did you ever think the pieces would be sold at “Barneys NYC.”

Justin:  Fetty Jewelry started at our very first SPW show and we just made some pieces to make some money because we were all broke!  I have worked at jewelry stores in NYC and I  just got fired at the time… We didn’t have t-shirts, we didn’t have albums to sell and it was our first show! I made these “Gun-Heart” necklaces for all of my friends who came to the show and they freaked out over them! Then I started getting them in boutiques around New York and then I harassed the people at Urban Outfitters until they “expressed interest.” I didn’t really know what I was doing.  You know I have a degree in music so Urban ended up liking them and told me “Oh! This is great! So we would love two thousand necklaces in three weeks” because they were convinced I was a massive jewelry company that could just produce these necklaces, but realistically it was just me and my band members and my friends in my loft in Brooklyn.

Kazemi: Wait, so you had to make three thousand pieces in three weeks?

Justin:  Luckily I did, so then I had a jewelry line! I started getting the kind of people who could make the pieces in 14 karat gold and diamond. I sold that to Barneys. Basically, it was this amazing accident that took an amazing amount of work. I assembled three thousand pieces with my own two hands! It was a lot of hard work but it was worth it because the band was able to fly to LA, London, and Paris to perform, and make our first indie record. It was an amazing way to start out as an indie band.

Kazemi:  It seems like the jewelry was the savior of the music.

Justin: Literally! If it wasn’t for the money from the jewelry, the band wouldn’t have been able to move on.

Kazemi: Doesn’t Kate Moss wear Fetty?

Justin:  Yeah, but so does Taylor Momsen and I think she’s  fabulous. Taylor always wears the big “XL” gun. The best part about her wearing Fetty is that she doesn’t even wanna wear the fancy stuff at Barneys. She wears the 20 dollar “big gun” we sell at shows. It’s so awesome!

Kazemi:   That is awesome! She is super young. Speaking of young, what was your college experience like at Berklee School Of Music?

Justin: It was amazing!  I can’t complain. It was like any other college.  Some parts are really awful and some parts are really great. Some teachers suck and some teachers were life changing, but the fact that I could study songwriting and get a degree from it…I really can’t ask for much more! Hahha!

Kazemi:   I assume that’s where you met your bandmates of today?

Justin:   Yeah, that’s where we all met. All of us studied different things. We all met in the first week of school.

Kazemi: Did you have any idea you guys were gonna work with each other and form the glam rock band, Semi Precious Weapons?

Justin:  We had no fucking clue. We did not start the band until five years after we met. We were just friends for a very long time. I thought I was gonna be a very serious somber singer/songwriter and Stevy & Cole thought they were gonna do jazz compositions. Dan thought he was gonna be a classical composer.  At some point we just got so bored of being so “intellectual” and started writing the music that inspired us as kids in the 90s:  Hole, Nirvana, Guns and Roses, Metallica and AC/DC. That’s how we became “Semi Precious Weapons”.

Kazemi:  So rock music on top 40 today isn’t really rock like the people you just listed. It’s more of a bubble gum juiced down rock.  Is Semi Precious Weapons going to change that?

Justin: We wanna be the biggest band in the world. I have intentions to go mainstream because I would love if “Real” Rock N Roll was on top 40 radio again because it use to be.  You would always hear rock on the top 40 stations, but now  you can’t even hear the guitar in the “rock music” that is played on the radio today.You can’t call that “rock n roll” when you can’t even hear the guitar. We are going to make “Rock N Roll” the new “Pop”.

Yes, there are fragrances being made by using strands of famous people’s hair! As if I thought some of this beauty stuff couldn’t get much weirder, there’s always a shocker like this out there. The company called My DNA Fragrance has made scents based on Marilyn Monroe, Katharine Hepburn, Elvis and Einstein! The latest on the list? I don’t think you’ll be surprised- Michael Jackson.

Realizing that her career has no where to go besides “Drug Overdose Highway” Lindsay is petitioning for the chance to star in a remake of “Some Like It Hot.”

Her obsession with Marilyn seems to be hitting a low note, especially considering that Sam Ro’s official carpet cleaner has already remade “The Last Sitting”, a classic Monroe photo series, for New York Mag and recently “starred in” [using the term loosely of course] a series of photos inspired by the dead icon for Spanish Vogue.

According to OK! magazine, director Brett Ratner has already rejected the idea, but Lohan isn’t giving up. ”She’s undaunted, but there’s no script and there’s no money. The only thing Lindsay has to sell is herself [which I hear she's already doing of the Pacific Coast Highway]. She sees herself as the second coming of Marilyn Monroe — misunderstood, talented and in desperate need of an incredible film vehicle that will truly showcase her talents.”

What happened to just using your liquid eyeliner and trying your hardest to make the most symmetrical black dot on your cheek so that you may channel your inner Dita Von Teese? Apparently, jewelry designer Sabrina Dehoff likes to kick it old school with her reincarnation of the mouche, which loosely translated means “beauty spot”. Literally translated, it means “fly”. Okay. The mouche goes all the way back to the 17^th century when both men and women adorned their faces with small pieces of cloth that were made out of velvet or silk and cut into fanciful shapes. They were meant to enhance facial features, conceal disfigurement from smallpox (gross) and improve a poor complexion. The placement of the mouche was indicative of a woman’s marital status or sexual mood. ‘Man, I knew Sally was a hoe…peep that mouche on the left side of her forehead.

Dehoff’s version is somewhat updated with a gold plated collection that includes, hearts, bows and guns. A gun above your upper lip? As au courant as that sounds, I’m on the fence with this one. I’ve always had love for the fake beauty mark and the way it manages to project glamour and allure at any given moment, but these kinda remind me of those jewel-like face stickers we used to wear back in middle school. Would ya wear these?

U.S based Bradford Licensing Associates (which owns Marilyn Monroe)  has teamed up with with UK label Blue Clothing to create a complete collection of young adult fashions under the late screen siren’s name.

“We have had the most success with apparel licenses specifically focusing on the retro look, so we think that Blues Clothing will follow in the same direction. We expect the line to be trendy, fashionable and girly just like Marilyn was in person,” says Michelle Minieri, president of Bradford Licensing.

The new line, which will feature T-shirts, tops, dresses, pants, and intimates, will debut in France in early 2009.

What really gets me going is the person who bought it? Who has a $1.5 million dollars to blast on porn? Plus, does this little scandal now shoot Marilyn up to Paris Hilton or Kim Kardashian fame? Can someone give her a reality series already!!!

On a sidenote, this is definitely shaping up to be Marilyn’s year.  She was in a Superbowl ad for Sunsilk, her impersonator is in Mister Lonely a new movie directed by the dude who made Kids, Lindsay Lohan and Micheal Musto paid homage to her last photo shoot, and now a sex tape!!!  For someone who’s been tramping it up with JFK’s ghost for years it’s amazing to see she has more staying power than Biggie and Tupac combined!!!
