The Olympic Torch, designed by the team of Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby, is made of aluminum with 8,000 perforated holes representing each of its carriers as it makes its way to London for the July 27 opening ceremony.

“Nothing is harder to get right* than designing for the Olympics,” said Design Museum director Deyan Sudjic. “The lightness and simplicity of Barber Osgerby’s Olympic Torch does just that.”

There were a total of 89 nominees in seven categories: Architecture, Digital, Fashion, Furniture, Graphics, Product and Transport.

The winner of the Fashion category was Issey Miyake‘s origami-inspired 132 5 Eco-Fashion collection, beating out these top contenders:

Holland, Long, Gray and Katrantzou are in some great company as past winners of the Fashion Forward prize have included Jonathan Saunders, Christopher Kane, Erdem and Giles. Meanwhile, Long is the first menswear designer to snatch the prize and according to BFC CEO Caroline Rush, the time was ripe: ’Menswear in London will be put in the spotlight this year making now the perfect time to introduce a menswear prize to Fashion Forward.” [Vogue UK]

Fashion Fund winner/certified hottie Henry Holland

A panel of experts will choose the Design of the Year as well as the top designs in six categories including Fashion, Architecture, Furniture and Graphics. In the Fashion Design category, Mary Katrantzou and Céline‘s fall 2011 collections will compete against Vivienne Westwood‘s Ethical Fashion Africa collection, and the collaboration between shoe company Melissa with Italian architect Gaetano Pesce. The sweetest color story to ice the runway is sherbet's pastel palette. Light and fruity, it harkens back to childhood only with a twist of business silhouette.

Sportswear is actively working its way into the daily regalia. It'll leave you prepared to break a sweat without a change.

This overskirt piece has been adding volume since the 19th century. Now done in our favorite muted brights, they kick a pencil skirt up.

Leave a sleeve off for the asymmetry of it. The cut is feels right in sheer and bouncy textiles.

Fringe is falling on spring, shagging shirts and leaving them stringy. Shimmy and shake in this new take on the 20's trim.

We already sniffed out the painted floral trend on the third day of NYFW, but the powerful flower prints just keep on sprouting. Whether digitized in a McQueenian manner or illustrated á la art deco, the prints we've been going gaga over have the same common blooming thread.

Forbidden love, over-saturation, and Marc Jacobs, oh my! This whimsical spread in Vogue for their August issue had us all sighing in wonderment. Raquel Zimmermann captivates in Givenchy, Mary Katrantzou and more, followed by a mysterious would-be paramour. The shoot was photographed by Steven Klein and styled by fashion editor Camilla Nickerson.

This year, Six Scents is paying tribute to precious childhood or adolescent memories–Mary Katrantzou‘s, for instance, recalls burnt matches and the summer breeze. For Hourani, that memory is sex. Which translates to the smell of…well…y’know…sperm.

I wanted something transformable, representing life from birth to death. The top note is baby powder mixed with the smell of sperm, but a sperm that is not necessarily vulgar or filthy. It’s more a smell you can’t put your finger on…Christopher [the perfumer] went as close to the sperm smell as possible and made it really elegant and beautiful.

Essentially, Hourani’s fragrance is the circle of life; the top note is the sensual, seedy scent of sperm–which actually kinda works. The softer second note, baby powder, represents infancy and leads into leather, evoking middle age. The final note of thick, heady incense has the funereal whiff of death. And with that, a spritz of perfume.

If you manage to get the very literal image of how one might collect sperm in perfume out of your head, Hourani’s scent is a gratifying, quite wearable, fittingly minimal statement.

This year, the project investigates the nature of childhood memories and the influence of adolescence on identity. It features unisex fragrances from designers Alexis Mabille, Mary Katrantzou, Junn.J, Rad Hourani, N.Hoolywood and Ohne Titel in collaboration with perfumers from Givaudan.

1. Michael Lewis: Lewis is footwear’s best kept secret and has impressed the likes of Marc Jacobs at Louis Vuitton, Christopher Bailey at Burberry and Tom Ford at Gucci with his shoe-shaped talents – before recently stepping into the role of creative consultant at Kurt Geiger. He brings his own label collection to LFW for the first time this season.

Michael van der Ham: The Dutch born designer’s Warhol art-inspired dresses caught the attention of more than one fashion insider during his autumn/winter 2009 Central St Martins show – for which he also scooped the L’Oreal Professional Award. Prior to this, the young impresario honed his talents with stints at Alexander McQueen and Sophia Kokosalaki.

Has an eye for: The eclectic – van der Ham’s mismatch approach to design ensures there’s never a dull moment.

Is inspired by: Women who aren’t afraid to be bold.

Will be: Showcasing as part of NEWGEN’s Ready-to-Wear exhibition at Somerset House.

3. Fred Butler: New kid on the block Fred began life as a set designer and prop maker before packing a style punch with her first jewellery collection of bold, bright and sculptural designs for autumn/winter 2009. Since then she has presented workshops at London’s Design Museum, guest lectured at the London College of Fashion and collaborated with Asos.com on their limited edition ‘Hit’ line.

Has an eye for: Creating “wearable sculpture,” by using graphic shapes, clashing colours and tactile forms.

Is inspired by: The unpredictable in the everyday.

4. Mark Fast: Since the success of the 28 year old Canadian’s Central St Martins graduate collection in 2007 (which was quickly snapped up by Browns Focus) the young designer has gone from strength to strength. His autumn/winter 2009 show featured a bold collection of black knitted body-con dresses, embellished with fringing and dramatic cut-out panels.

Has an eye for: Exquisite pieces that are contoured to the body.

Is inspired by: Finding innovative ways with knitwear.

5. Eun Jeong: 2008′s Fashion Fringe winner, Eun Jeong leapt on the scene with a collection made entirely from white cotton lace. The Korean designer has since been working hard to develop her own label ‘1st element by hong eun jeong’.

Has an eye for: Neat pleats and effortless tailoring.

Is inspired by: Uniqueness in others.

6. Emilio de la Morena: Having trained as a sculptor in his native Spain before sharpening his fashion skills at Central St Martins in 2002, de la Morena’s designs are inspired by structural shapes and traditional Spanish artisan techniques.

Is inspired by: The relationship between organic shapes and defined silhouettes.

7. Josh Goot: His sleek and monochromatic autumn/winter 2009 collection had London based Goot dubbed the new king of modernism, for his simple yet sophisticated use of black and white on shifts and neatly tailored suits.

8. Mary Katrantzou: Since her fun graphic print collection for autumn/winter 2009, that featured dresses emblazoned with images of perfume bottles, we have not been able to shake the feeling that Katrantzou is going places. Having worked under fellow Greek, Sophia Kokosalaki and freelanced for Bill Blass, the young print designer also makes jewellery to complement her collections.

Has an eye for: Digital prints and bold, industrial jewellery.

Is inspired by: Antique perfume bottles and 18th century portraits for spring/summer 2010.

9: Maria Francesca Pepe: With style insiders dipping into Pepe’s jewellery box for her hand-crafted Italian pieces to adorn their fashion pages – including Harper’s Bazaar – it is little wonder the designer already has a loyal following. You might have seen her designs embellishing the shows of Roksanda Illincic (S/S09 and A/W09), Emilio De La Morena (A/W09) and Louise Grey (A/W09), for which she designed a shoe collection.

Has an eye for: Chunky tubular necklaces made using old, handcrafted Italian techniques.

10. Veryta: Designer and Fashion illustrator Tanya Ling brings her talents to the role of Creative Director of not-for-profit label Veryta, which appears for the first time this season. Launched with the backing of Yves Saint Laurent’s Stefano Pilati and Filippo Binaghi of Italian Silk manufacturer, Lorma, 10 percent of sales from the collection will go direct to children’s charities in India.

There’s nothing I enjoy seeing more than a sick-as-fuck Greek designer sending his or her stuff down the runway. And Mary Katrantzou’s sophomore collection did not disappoint. Her colorful patterns do more than sit flat on the fabric, but rather jump out at you for a total 3-d effect. Her flowing gowns and mod mini dresses take the cake as my favorites, but I can’t go without mentioning her awesome striped pants. Katrantzou has a unique vision that I believe will take her quite far in the design world. Keep an eye on her Indies; you’ll be wearing her very soon.
