In September, the last vestiges of summer make it slightly easier to turn it proverbially out, but February usually requires a lot of layering and the outfit often has to be cruelly covered up to stave off the ravages of winter. This New York Fashion Week, however, the winter has been suspiciously mild. Temperatures have barely dipped below freezing and nary a snow flake has dropped in weeks. So let’s just ignore our impending doom thanks to the totally buzz-killing reality of global warming and instead focus on what matters: dressing for the Tents. Here are 10 staples — 5 for the guys and 5 for the gals, but feel free to mix and match since we actively don’t subscribe to gender constructs — for NYFW. This year, Six Scents is paying tribute to precious childhood or adolescent memories–Mary Katrantzou‘s, for instance, recalls burnt matches and the summer breeze. For Hourani, that memory is sex. Which translates to the smell of…well…y’know…sperm.

I wanted something transformable, representing life from birth to death. The top note is baby powder mixed with the smell of sperm, but a sperm that is not necessarily vulgar or filthy. It’s more a smell you can’t put your finger on…Christopher [the perfumer] went as close to the sperm smell as possible and made it really elegant and beautiful.

Essentially, Hourani’s fragrance is the circle of life; the top note is the sensual, seedy scent of sperm–which actually kinda works. The softer second note, baby powder, represents infancy and leads into leather, evoking middle age. The final note of thick, heady incense has the funereal whiff of death. And with that, a spritz of perfume.

<a

And Mary Katrantzou’s sophomore collection did not disappoint. Her colorful patterns do more than sit flat on the fabric, but rather jump out at you for a total 3-d effect. Her flowing gowns and mod mini dresses take the cake as my favorites, but I can’t go without mentioning her awesome striped pants. Katrantzou has a unique vision that I believe will take her quite far in the design world. Keep an eye on her Indies; you’ll be wearing her very soon.

GALLERY: <a

Mary truly embraces the architectural aspect of her design. Emphasizing illusions, Mary draws a faint line between reality and her printed jewelry. With each design printed on the various works, Mary creates an image where it appears as though heavy jewelry is present. Not only does the collection feature clothing, it features jewelry as well. With pieces constructed from materials such as wood and metal, Mary endeavors into a wide range of creative imagination. It’s clear from her designs that Mary can cater to a wide audience. Though all the pieces appeal to a sophisticated women, there are no limits to the type of consumer, as long as she’s ready to carry herself with confidence. Whether it’s jewelry or clothing, the works are all extremely elegant. Creating clothing with a broad yet powerful color scheme emphasizes the originality of the collection. It’s a job well done!
