Yes they were dressed in over-the-top designer duds but is that even cool anymore? In the ten + years since the show has gone off the air, we’ve seen the rise of Alexander Wang, Phillip Lim, American Apparel, “it” girls like Erin Wasson and Agyness, and stars like Alison Mosshart and MIA. At this point Carrie running around in a turban and Samantha in a red dress with spiked shoulders just looks circus costumes gone wrong. Their ensembles were so over-the-top I felt like I was watching rejects from the gay pride parade. Or the Meatpacking District. When the show first aired it was a revolution. It was a revolution for fashion, feminism, and the city of New York itself. But while the rest of us have moved on, Carrie and the girls are stuck on their own fabulousness (you too Madonna). Ladies it’s a wrap.

MIA gets her Gangalang on for Dazed & Confused. We love the fashion choices for the Sri Lankan gem.  The issue hits newsstands on June 17th.

I’m seriously feeling my fellow dot head MIA on the cover of Nylon this month. How cuteroo is she? But little does anyone know she has a little sis, Kali Arulpragasam, who designs a pretty bad ass line of jewelry called Super Fertile. She makes these foot long plus oversized gold and silver plated necklaces, rings and “ear covers” address social issues such as the caste system in India, as well as environmental issues such as endangered species. My personal fave is a necklace from the CRA$H line with a graph of the U.S. National debt.

I don’t know about you, but I think debating politics, religion, and social ills can be a real pain. Either because no one knows what they’re talking about or people get all emotional and faces turn red. So I figure this is the perfect solution. This is Lynn Hirschberg, a Times Magazine writer that just started a war with M.I.A. for writing a story that makes the Sri Lankan songstress look like a total flake. She’s about to take the reigns at W Magazine as Editor-at-Large. You can understand why we’re concerned.

I mean seriously girly, you’re going to be in charge of something important (not sure exactly what an Editor-at-Large does but I think they take over if the Editor-in-Chief is ever assassinated) at W Magazine, the “luxury” fashion bible and you’re dressed like a Mormon school teacher.

Get some make-up, discover Brazilian straightening, whiten those chompers and immediately put yourself on a diet of Barney’s and Saks Fifth Avenue. This look really isn’t working and if Stefano Tonchi is going to have any luck at saving the drowning ship that is W, he better bring on fewer bookworms and more shopgirls. Geek ain’t chic, Tonchi.

While the female MC hasn’t contributed much to the music scene since “Paper Planes”, her latest song “Born Free” is definitely getting a ton of attention due to the graphic nature of the video. Definitely not a look for the bashful.  Celebs have been spotted a few times now wearing perfectly matched dresses and leggings.  My mom used to always tell me to compliment, not match, but I think taking advice from Leighton Meester (at the MET Gala) may be a better option?

Just because our little Sri Lankan rapper can pull off the crazy tie-dye tights and see-through tops doesn’t mean that Barrymore, pushing 40, should even attempt. I don’t care if her acting debut started with ET, Barrymore needs to come back to planet earth and realize that she looks like a fool.

Oh MIA, Why? Why oh why oh why do you make it so easy to bash you?

We get that any day now you will be nursing your fetal hipster offspring, spewing milk from your Sri Lankan utters, while talking bout that time you considered to call it quits to focus on fashion. But did you really need to offer the world a fee pass to your peek show?!?

Please, strongly reconsider reentering retirement (or at least maternity leave).  I love paper planes and all, but Rey Rey and Santagold can take it from here.

Remember that little number by Henry Holland? Ever what it would look like on a pregnant woman who could explode at any second? Check out this video of M.I.A performing with (soon to be jail bait) T.I, (the ass of our generation) Kanye West, (the socially accepted, talentless junkie) Lil Wayne, and (the 95 year old “gangster”) Jay-Z at the Grammys last night. Sorry M.I.A but this may have been the worst opportunity to wear you House of Holland gear, or dance like you normally do.

Warning: M.I.A’s new clothing line may cause seizures! Inspired by a Carribean albino teenager (no, I’m not kidding) named Okley Leslie, M.I.A’s line, Okley Run, is anything but unexpected. Basically, her overpriced and over-designed tees, hoodies, leggings and tanks look exactly like her album art. We’ve got a little bit of Mexican, African and Islamic art going on. Who knows, wear any of these items with M.I.A’s signature gold metallic leggings and you might be mistaken for the rapper herself! Come on M.I.A, shouldn’t you spend a little less time on your awful clothing line and a little more time on deciding what to name your baby? Corey and I discussed this…we think S.O.S or A.W.O.L would be excellent choices. Better yet, put your spare time into recording a new album…I’m dying for some more pop/rap/afro-beat tunes!

For some odd (yet honestly cool) reason our scanner only picks up images in black and white. Here’s an image of MIA’s recent GQ spread. It’s rare to see MIA all comfy about her baby bump since it was so taboo recently, but seeing her now makes me hope her retirement rumors were just that. Paper Planes was mainstream golden, but we need more original, quirky MIA goodness for our weekend dance parties.

“I performed at a show at the MoMA. There was this big dinner there, and I was seated in this hall with the mayor of New York and all these extremely wealthy art-supporting and art-buying people. There was a piece of work hanging in the hall—it was a fan. This fan was supposed to swing by the momentum of its own propeller. So, while we were having dinner, the fan was stopped, and the guy next to me, a curator at P.S.1, said, “Look, this is what art symbolizes today.” Like, that piece of art is supposed to be moving, but just to have dinner we’ve stopped the art. That’s what New York is like today. You can’t have real art happen in an institution because rich people can make the world stop.”

Madonna wore these killer (literally?) gun heels to the screening of her film Filth and Wisdom Monday night. These platforms were the spotlight for Karl Lagerfeld’s Chanel 2009 Resort collection. But don’t jump the gun now, Lyn Costello, from Mothers Against Murder And Aggression said:

“I am horrified that Madonna can see these shoes as fashion. Celebrities have a massive part to play and an icon like Madonna should have more sense.”

I really think these heels are more of a fashion statement and less of a violence marketing campaign. And seriously, when was the last time you heard an 8-year-old say that Madonna was their idol? Now, if Hannah Montana was rocking the gun heels, then we would have some problems…

Diesel’s 30th Anniversary party just got a little bit FUCKING COOLER!!!

Aside from M.I.A., N.E.R.D and Joel and Benji Madden, BRITNEY “THE COMEBACK KID” SPEARS might be making an appearance!!!  Yeah, I know. Fucking Crazy!!!

Who knows whether or not this is absolutely true, but it would make sense. Diesel shoppers are the perfect audience for Britney’s beats and she’s in desperate need of getting some fashion cred since she can’t seem to piece together a proper outfit.

I just hope the rumor is true, cause I plan to camp out side of Diesel for a pair of these tickets. You can head to their store on Union Square on Friday morning to wait for a pair. See you there.

Britney Spears Might Need a Pair of Jeans Before Her Performance

South Wales-born Nova Dando earned a humble Knitting degree from Central St. Martin’s before embarking on a path of self-branding and innovation.

Dando started out working in fashion PR (along the way connecting with Gareth Pugh, House of Holland, etc.), event production, and assisting on photoshoots.

For four years she has also been half of DJ duo Lou&Nova, who perform internationally at fashion and music events.

Now she has fused all her creative endeavors into her own clothing collections. Dando’s musician and artist neighbors started enlisting her to style their videos and shoots. Soon she went from Missoni wannabe to an in-demand stylist and costumer. She’s still pretty under the radar now, especially in the states, but Dando’s specialty is made-to-order pieces for music videos, fashion editorials, events and performances.

Notable clients include M.I.A., Hercules and Love Affair, The Teenagers, Operator Please, and Vice magazine.

PaperMag has officially named it’s 25 most stylish songbirds.

“From Stevie Nicks’ billowy dresses, to Grace Jones’s power-suits, to Madonna’s Gaultier bra, to Björk’s swan get-up, female musicians have a long history of making fashion statements. These days, the current crop of songstresses, both up-and-coming and fairly established, are carrying on the tradition. To honor these women and their impeccable senses of style, we decided to compile a list who we think are the 25 most fiercely fashionable femmes doing their thing in the music biz today. As a way to keep things organized, we divided up the gals into those that rock an ethereal, very L.A. flower child look, those who go for the chic high-fashion thing, those who dress like an early-’90s club kid, those who think outside of the fashion box and those who we lovingly like to refer to as hot messes.

It has been reported that Marc Jacobs is going back to using models for his fall campaigns. Celebs of the current campaign are Victoria Beckham, Dakota Fanning, and M.I.A., which could not be any more different from each other, or completely wrong for his desired customer. Hopefully, who ever he finds next season can make his clothes look more desirable, because Becks looking like a character for Planet of the Apes does not make me want to buy his clothes, neither does a thirteen year old girl, so lets leave the modeling to professionals!

The self titled collection is inspired by M.I.A’s own tour gear and the tiny raptress wears the line while on stage. Made up of really bright bomber jackets, leggings and T-shirts, all done up in the bold hues and graphic prints for which the singer is known, the collection is available in London (but I’m sure there are some plans in the works to get them in the States soon).

Aside from being a perfect way to express you love of Paper Planes, M.I.A’s line also offers a bit of security from theft.  Explains the pint-sized rhymesmith to WWD: “With my stuff, because everything’s really bright, if you lose it or someone steals it, you can see it from miles away and you can be like, ‘Oy! Give me my shirt back!’”

Of course the question remains, who would actually want to steal your neon bomber jacket?  Aside from this guy, that is.
