Michelle Obama Be Stuntin’ On You Hoes fashion

Or to put it more eloquently, wardrobe. Game. Proper. Yes, a lot of fuss is constantly being made over Michelle’s taste in clothing, but for good reason. Unlike her predecessors, nary a boxy, double-breasted suit or dated color scheme has come her way. And after seeing her in this outfit for the White House Evening of Poetry and Music event this past weekend, I feel compelled to bestow some praise. Wearing a breezy, altered mutli-patterned piece from British design duo Basso & Brooke’s spring/summer ‘09 collection teamed with a pair of white Maison Martin Margiela cropped trousers, the First Lady looked polished, comfortable, and effortlessly chic. Not to mention the drop disc earrings and alluring makeup, which really brings out the composition of this top. Which leads me to thinking…all of the former first ladies just dressed bad on purpose?

Mama Obama: Back To Black Or Release With Reese?

Mama Obama: Back To Black Or Release With Reese? fashionAfter over-analyzed controversy followed the First Lady for her choice to wear Jason Wu at the Presidential inauguration ball, Michelle Obama is “redeeming” herself with the black community, sporting a flirty and feminine Tracy Reese dress on the latest cover of People Magazine. For those of you who don’t know, Tracy Reese happens to be a black designer, and a very talented one at that. But before the media goes over-analyzing her fashion choice, let it be know that Obama is, in fact, a Tracy Reese fan. During a fundraiser in 2008, Obama and Reese had the opportunity of meeting where she confessed: “I need to be wearing [Reese's] clothes!” Tracy Reese designs affordable and stylish clothing that real women want to wear. Although Obama very well could have chosen this dress to brush the designer-race issue under the rug, she is a real woman who is obligated to inspire real women! Why wouldn’t Obama choose Tracy Reese to join her cult of designers?

I guess Obama’s message about designers will be more evident in the future, but as for now, I enjoy Obama’s colorblind approach to choosing labels. White, black, asian, hispanic, middle eastern- every race has brilliant designers. Let the first lady wear what makes her unique. Nobody is telling you who to keep in your closet, so why should America tell Obama who to keep in hers?

Thanks NY Daily!

BEHIND THE BEAUTY: Kimora Lee Simmons

BEHIND THE BEAUTY: Kimora Lee Simmons fashion

BEHIND THE BEAUTY: Kimora Lee Simmons fashion

I was excited to see what MISS FAB Kimora Lee Simmons herself was going to come up with for her show at Fashion Week. This creative FAB girl’s inspiration was The New First Lady, Michelle Obama, for both hair and makeup. James Laliardos, the Creative Director of the makeup team, aimed for a classic beauty, keeping with what we love about Kimora…FABULOSITY!

Laliardos create a contoured face using a nude sculpting foundation and applying nude shadow into the eye crease to add definition. The lids were topped with a pinkish-gold for some sparkle and cocoa shadow on the brow bone to subtly separate the lid from the brow bone. Individual lashes were applied to make them semi-sexy on the top lashes, and black mascara in MAC Zoom Black for the bottom lash. A hint of gold glitter on the inside corner of the eye for radiance and a light coating of glitter across the lids to catch the runway lights. On the cheeks peach, pink or fuchsia blush was used depending on the model’s complexion for the most part he used MAC Pink Swoon blush at the top of the cheekbones. MAC Lip glass in Partial to Pink, a creamy lip gloss with a pale pink sheen completed the look.

Hair stylist Odie Gilbert turned up the volume by teasing the hair and pinning it in place for a WOW factor. Lots of tease spray, and curly extensions were added for extra volume.

Michelle Obama Becomes the Fourth Black Woman To Grace The Cover Of Vogue fashion

Oprah Winfrey, Halle Berry, Jennifer Hudson and now Michelle Obama. That’s right kiddies, in Vogue’s 116 years this is only the fourth time that a black woman has graced its cover. Purchase it, covet it, and seriously try to collect them all. It’ll be worth something when this magazine finally kicks the bucket (fingers crossed).

Two points if you know how many Asian and Hispanic women have had the cover…

Is WWD a Big Fat Liar? Claim Suggest They Lied About Eele’s on Michelle Obama

Is WWD a Big Fat Liar? Claim Suggest They Lied About Eeles on Michelle Obama fashion

Last week we bashed Amnau Eele [photo'd center],  director of Black Artists Association,  for making comments against our first lady’s fashion choices on inauguration day. Rumors have begun to circulate that WWD’s reporting on Amnau’s comments were GREATLY FABRICATED (aka they were one big fat lie).

Basically, Amnau’s emails to WWD didn’t contain any mention of Kumbaya, “Our Moment”, or any of the vicious attacks the former model made about Michelle Obama’s freedom to choose. According to one of our adamant commenters (who compared Amnau bashing to a “lynching”) Amnau is claiming the story is false.

So did some press hungry WWD staffer make-up the story? My guess is no.

Of course the other possibility is that Amnau is just freaking now that members of her association are backing out and she’s received a couple death threats. Is she just realizing that she over stepped her boundaries by trying to speak for black designers (her organization only represents black artists)

My guess is that this former spotlight grabber is desperate to not fade away with a legacy that includes becoming America’s number one reason to hate again.

WWD was not available for comments on this matter.

MORE ON THE SUBJECT

Here is the comment from Janice Webb on Fashion Indie

In the 50’s a white woman would say a black man looked at her and white men would rush to lynch the black man with no proof. I found out today that a white woman at wwd said a black woman said we are the world, kumbaya and it’s our moment, and the world including black people rushed to lynch this black woman named Amnau Eele with no proof. I found out today on the radio that in tomorrow’s Washington, D. C. newspaper, the paper is going to show the e-mail interviews that Amnau Eele did with WWD and guess what? Amnau Eele never said one quote that was printed in the WWD article. not one. All of those Quotes belonged to the WWD writer. This is going to be huge.

Here are some responses from the industry on the issue.

- African American Designer B Michael

“I personally believe it is an unfair expectation to place on the first lady,” he said. “Fashion is subjective and a matter of personal choice.”

- Bethann Hardison (Tyson Beckford’s agent)

“The comment is inappropriate. You don’t wear a designer because they are just black; you wear them because they are great.”

- Karyn D. Collins of Asbury Park Press

“I think we start getting into some dangerous territory when we start expecting someone to look, act, speak, etc. a certain way just because they’re black. I think it does a disservice to the designers in question for suggesting that their work should have been selected because they’re black. I’m sure B Michael, Kevan Hall, Mychael Knight, Tracy Reese, Stephen Burrows and any other black designer would be the first to say they would want their design to be worn because the first lady liked the design, period.”

Saving A Seat For Mama Obama

Saving A Seat For Mama Obama fashionForget prominent editors, designers, photographers and celebrities, IMG wants first lady Michelle Obama, more than anyone else, at February’s Fashion Week. According to Fern Mallis, senior vice president at IMG, Mama Obama won’t just be another famous face in the crowd. Mallis hopes Obama’s presence will reverse the attention from the designers who aren’t showing to those who have snagged a coveted spot on the runway. With the total number of events dropping significantly, Mama Obama might be that face of “change” to give designers their well deserved pat on the back and siphon slipping designers out of their financial and motivational slumps! I think she can!

Michelle Obama Outfit #1: Isabel Toledo

Michelle Obama Outfit #1: Isabel Toledo fashion

I live 5 miles outside of D.C. I am not interested in seeing how quickly the Porta Potties freeze over or touching strangers with my nice coat.

But I can spot Michelle Obama leaving St. John’s Church on the TV and run to the Internet and find an image of it!

Washington is actually clear of wintery weather, and the Obamas are mostly hanging out inside what I’m sure is a heated limo. So luckily Michelle’s not all bundled up. (I wonder if Barack is wearing long underwear?)

She’s wearing a yellow-gold brocade Isabel Toledo skirtsuit with an interesting choice of green Jimmy Choo pumps and green J. Crew gloves.

Toledo is a Cuban-born, New York-based designer that has been a favorite of both Mrs. Obama and her style fans.

No doubt this is only the first of a couple outfits she will wear today!

The Presidential Family Shows Some Boobs, And They Werent Michelles fashion

People around the nation are calling them Presidential pecs, but they look a bit more like Barack Obama man titties to me. The soon to be President took a page out of Lindsay Lohan’s book and left the house without his man bra the other day, and it looks to me like he’s got similar sag to that of Betty White from the Golden Girls. Suck in for the cameras Barack, but you can’t suck in those pubescent Miley Cyrus B-cups.

Michelle Obama’s Got a Ton of Personal Designers

Michelle Obamas Got a Ton of Personal Designers fashion

Though we haven’t quite been able to confirm whether or not the next season of Project Runway will be hitting the screen anytime soon, former contestants are having a blast! The daily beast created a challenge for select former contestants. The challenge: Create a inaugural dress for the first lady! Yes, that;s Mrs. Obama. Seems too easy, right? They thought so also. The catch: All of the contestants could use Laura Bush’s inaugural dress, an American flag, burlap potato sacks and $10 worth of their own trim. The designs weren’t all bad! Though, there are the exceptions of course!

Fashion Quotable: Tim Gunn fashion

Recently, NY Mag asked Project Runway’s Tim Gunn of his opinion on the prospective First Lady’s of the United States. Gunn boldly replied that he clearly prefered the fashionable Michelle Obama. Gunn is not merely discussing the two women’s fashion sense. He insightfully intertwines fashion choice with character

“Michelle really epitomizes American style, and she’s not afraid to show her shape, she’s not afraid to show her sexiness without being the least bit inappropriate,” Tim said. “She’s just an alluring woman. And Cindy with her suits and she’s all buttoned up, she’s just soooo — she just looks like she’s duct-taped! There is just something about her, and in a way it’s a metaphor about who she is!”

Thanks to NY Mag for the info!
