Pier peddler

Back to the daily grind! It’s like we came back from vacation to autumn! It’s 70 here, but feels even colder than that and it’s overcast and cloudy! Downtown wasn’t half as busy as it should be in the midst of summer. Ooh, I’m just not ready for summer to end yet. Of course, autumn is my favorite season but I’m having too much fun this summer. Plus, I need at least a few more trips into the waves of Lake Michigan!

Pier peddlerPier peddler

We grabbed a bite of ice-cream down at a local ice cream shop, Pier Peddler. It’s a cute little shop with touristy gifts! It’s funny seeing all the touristy items on our trip in the upper peninsula and coming home to more of the same! Do any of you live in tourist towns? Do you like it or hate it? I personally love it – I think it’s so fun when Grand Haven is bustling in the summer!

I’m working on wrapping up some of my summer outfits! I still have some items I haven’t worn yet for summer – I really need to get my butt in gear. I bought this skirt in Chicago last month and I love the little heart print design! I also see my canvas wedges online at UO and linked to them in case you asked me about them! They have different colors too and they are so comfortable. I could walk everywhere in these! They’ll transition really well into my autumn wardrobe too. I’m so excited for fall clothes!

Spotlight 616: Get Involved!

Edited by

SOURCE:Spotlight 616: Get Involved!

Are you from the Michigan-area and looking to participate in a really fun fashion event? Spotlight 616 is looking to recruit hair stylists, make up artists, photographers and aspiring models for an upcoming event! It’s all happening on September 30th, in the midst of Art Prize, in downtown Grand Rapids! Spotlight 616 is going to showcase an array of independent clothing retailers, models, photographers, hair stylists, make up artists – all local to the Grand Rapids area. It’s not your typical fashion show. It’s going to be stations of teams working in their own locations in a style battle format!

Spotlight 616: Get Involved!

Each team will collaborate to style up five completed “looks” – one for each model over the course of one evening. The public will be encouraged to walk from station to station to observe what the teams are creating at any time. The audience will also have the opportunity to vote on their favorite look to determine the winning team. Style battling is a rising trend and I’m so excited to see Grand Rapids take part in it! When the time is up, the models will take part in a grand finale walk. There are prizes and more details at their website. If you’re interested, be sure to get involved! Click here to find out how you can participate! Let me know if you have any questions – I’ll be happy to help out!

I will most definitely be there attending the event and the after party! If you’re coming out to Grand Rapids for the fashion festivities, be sure to let me know! I’d love to meet you! Email me at tieka@selectivepotential.com or comment and let me know! I’m super excited for all of the fashion festivities coming up this fall!

Salute to the Coast Guard

Edited by

The ships are back in town! I imagined myself singing “The boys are back in town”! when I just typed that out. Oh brother! I’m hyper tonight. Brett was telling me to calm down in the car tonight because I was going nuts pinching him and tickling him! He always has to yell at me and tell him not to “distract the driver”. Hehehe, old man! Anywho, off topic! Last night, Brett and I were tourists in our own town! We went down to the Coast Guard ships and took a free tour of them! Our town is packed right now – Coast Guard festival is always a crazy week. I love it!

I borrowed this so cute dress from Delightfully Tacky when I saw it on her post here. I was like, “Elizabeth, I need that for Coast Guard festival!” and of course, being the doll she is, sent it right over! I haven’t worn these shoes in so long. I honestly bought them because Brett always used to wear Vans Authentics… and I thought he was the cutest guy in the world wearing them. So I bought some for me too! I don’t look as cute as he does though in them. Mannnn! No fair.

It was so hot this night. Why I’m wearing a cardigan? Don’t ask. I was a sweaty mess. But once you got onto the scoot and headed down by the lakeshore, it felt so amazing! After our ship tours, we headed up toward Chinook Pier and paid $1.50 each to take a trolley ride around our town. It’s so fun. They have such funny jokes and it’s always fun to be smarter than the tour guide sometimes! He didn’t even know about the old lady in the big haunted house (wait until October for that one, I have some awesome autumn shoots planned!)

Why is Brett wearing a giant, mean gorilla on his t-shirt? Ugh. I’ve been trying to get him off the band t-shirt kick since we got married. No luck so far. It’s the band – Gorilla Biscuits – but I’m sure most of you didn’t know that and are thinking he’s just sporting some weird gorilla t-shirt. Bahahah. I like his cute little UO shoes and rolled up jeans though! Plus, his lighthouse is clearly visible in this photo! I love his sleeve to pieces. I know it’s weird, but it’s like “home” to me when I see his tattoos. They’ve been there such a long time and they’ll be there for the rest of our lives. My Grandpa had a Native American woman tattooed on his forearm and she aged with him as he got older and I just loved it.

A country road

Edited by

I absolutely love heading out to our back country roads for outfit posts. Lake Michigan drive is gorgeous – no matter what season. In fall, the colors are just stunning. This is probably my favorite outfit picture ever taken and it was while I was out trespassing at an old barn last autumn out here. We also found the cutest flower shop ever while driving along this past spring. And now in summer, the corn stalks are so high that we could barely walk through them! Old country roads are just so picturesque!

I felt very “Zooey” today in this dress in her Summer Finn role. The second I saw this dress on Bleubird Vintage, I bought it immediately. I absolutely love the fit, the color, the buttons up the front, and of course my favorite feature – the sleeves. If I had to wear one article of clothing everyday, it would be a sleeved dress. They are so easy. I felt a little guilty for throwing on a dress and walking out the door, but I tried to add a bunch of accessories and what not to this outfit and it wasn’t working. Simple was better!

After we grabbed these shots, we went and did a few rituals – flipped through books and magazines at the bookstore. I bought the new Emily Giffin book. She’s definitely my favorite author. I started reading her books because I thought her cover art was so well designed (I’m a graphic designer, I judge a book by it’s cover!) and I ended up loving her novels. Two of her books are actually set to be made into a movie starring Kate Hudson, Ginnifer Goodwin and John Krasinski! (I love Kate Hudson so I squealed with delight when I heard about my favorite book turning into a movie starring her) It’s coming out next June, so you have plenty of time to read them – Something Borrowed and Something Blue. Both so great. Especially Something Blue.

I honestly cannot believe it’s already July 15th. Summer is flying by. It’s basically half way through! And it feels like it just started two weeks ago! I feel like I honestly just graduated a couple of weeks ago. I was thinking time would slow way down when I graduated, but that’s not at all the case! Every single day is jam packed and I’m always constantly busy. Not that I’m complaining, I guess.. I love being busy, but I’d love to be busy and for time to slow down. Is that possible? Hehe!

Detroit Fashion Week Is Michigans Only Fashion Industry Event

I had never heard that Detroit has a Fashion Week, but apparently they do. I’m sorry that I didn’t cover this, maybe next year, since you know, as the website says it’s Michigan’s “only fashion industry event.” That makes it sound so much more sad than exciting.

This year’s week was sponsored by the CW and showcased designs by Reco Chapple of Bravo’s ‘The Fashion Show,’ and Bianca Golden from one of the millions of seasons of America’s Next Top Model.

If you’re actually excited about this, check out their site

STREET ZEROES: My Sister Is Stalking Verizon Customers RIGHT NOW

Edited by

STREET ZEROES: My Sister Is Stalking Verizon Customers RIGHT NOW

STREET ZEROES: My Sister Is Stalking Verizon Customers RIGHT NOWI am now about to go on a rant about how much I don’t like the Midwest:

My sister is currently texting me with live updates of her trip to the Verizon store in Ann Arbor.  This further explains why my sister and I are the same person:

“Hot pink dollar store flip flops, white sweat pant shorts up the butt. One of those initial purses from Claire’s (you can see it better in the second pic), Brooklyn USA tank, having a conversation about tanning and more. Oh, and fake Oakley sunglasses. And Cosmo in her purse.”

I couldn’t believe this was true..but it gets better

“Well I’m like fifth in line and it’s hilarious. I thought you’d enjoy. Oh now she’s discussing what shampoo to use. Pulled out a notebook to record ‘big sexy hair.’ Classy”

I conclude, Michigan people not only lack style, but they find themselves thinking that they are in tune to what’s ‘fashionable’ or ‘in right now.’  You can bash and hate me all you want, but I have lived here for twenty one years. I know what’s going on.

Another update:

“Holy crap! Another lady in here: Crocs, khaki capris, red baggy tee with what appears to be a huge drool spot, frizzy hair. You would hate it here. Or die.”

And I would like to close with:

“Gold pants. The lady next to me has a bruised swollen face from plastic surgery. This place is insane. Girl in front of me in an all black dressy outfit, brown purse, and white Nike grandma walking shoes.”

Rescue me. Rescue me now.
