RUNWAY: MOSCHINO SPRING 2010

Moschino’s spring 2010 collection, which recently took the runway at Milan Fashion Week, had in-your-face daisy theme. Bold sunglasses, patterns, and even a daisy hat were all apart of the hippy-mod line.
I’m so glad to see some bright and 60’s era inspired pieces for the spring. Will you be going crazy for daisies next year too?

The Travesty of the Tears

Falling on the runway. Embarrassing? Yes. Painful? Most Likely. Forgotten about by next season? Of course. But a tumble on the runway is a mere blip on the radar in comparison to this season’s runway trauma: crying on the runway. We’ve heard the rumors and seen the photos of Auguste Abeliunaite’s teary catwalk during Jil Sander’s Fall 2009 collection in Milan. Allow me to clear the gossip of bad breakups, tights shoes and painful cramps to bring you the biggest bullshit excuse I’ve ever heard. According to Piero Piazzi, Abeliunaite’s booker, her eyes are sensitive and bright lights turn on the waterworks: “She has delicate eyes,” Piazzi explained. “We were laughing with the casting director after the show.” Hmm…maybe it was nervous laughter because Piazzi knew he wouldn’t be making quite the same commission on this girl. Honestly, if the whole bright lights excuse was really the case, Abeliunaite, regardless of her gorgeous features, would not have a career in modeling. And hello, bright lights are used in every runway show, so why haven’t we seen tears from the model before?
Personally, I’d like to hear from Abeliunaite herself. You’re a big girl beautiful, why don’t you tell the world why you were really crying/tearing up/eye watering instead of having your uncreative booker make up some lame excuse?
Thanks NY Mag!

Backstage Milan Fashion Week: Moschino

Really liked this backstage look of a model getting done up for Moschino Cheap & Chic show at Milan Fashion Week. You know you want it.

Valentino Live!

If you spend your nights laying in bed, dreaming of sitting front row at a couture fashion show, dream no more…okay, well dream no more if you are currently in Paris, Milan or Rome. The Valentino Couture action hits the runway tomorrow night at 6:30 PM (11:30 AM EST) at Le Grand Ampitheatre de la Sorbonne in Paris. But if you happen visit Valentino’s boutiques on Rue de Faubourg St Honore in Paris, Via Condotti in Rome and Via Montenapoleone in Milan, you can catch the live show in real time on plasma screen televisions! If only I could watch Valentino via home computer where show attire includes dinosaur footy pajamas and bed-head.
Thanks Vogue!
ADDICT: Angela Lindvall for Trussardi S/S 09 Photographed by Milan

This is one of the most straightforward ads I’ve seen in awhile. Model Angela Lindvall is basically selling the purse with no strenuous effort. You can tell by the way she’s holding the bag that it’s for sale. The purse looks okay, but what I really want is her outfit. Even though the ad is simple and even a bit grainy looking, I appreciate its raw style and appearance.
Thanks to IMG for the photo.
Indies to Watch: Tanya Dziahileva

So, you’ve all probably been wondering who the twiggy, elfish, almost alien like blonde chick taking over runways and editorials everywhere is. Well, ladies and gentlemen, meet Tanya Dziahileva, the 17-year-old Ukrainian and Polish-Belarussian hot commodity.
I actually had the opportunity to meet Ms. D at the International Model and Talent Association in 2006. At that time, she was recently picked up by IMG models and her career was just beginning, a runway show here and an fashion ad there. But now, you can’t even touch the teenage top model. Ms. D has walked in over 100 shows, including the coveted position as opener for Rag & Bone and closer for Miss Sixty. From New York to Paris and Milan, Ms. D has modeled for nearly every top designer. And snagging a spot on the cover of Russian Vogue ain’t half bad for a girl who hasn’t even hit college yet.
She might look like Tinkerbell, but her youthful, edgy look has got designers everywhere craving more, more, more!

Designer Discovery: Anna ter Haar

Mix a little bit of patience, a splash of color, some polyurethane resin and one talented artist and what do you get? That’s right, out of this world accessories for Milan’s very own fashion week. Dutch artist, Anna ter Haar, was recently snagged by the designers for Klavers van Engelen to design dripping sunglasses for their Fall/Winter 2008 collection.
Haar came across this method of preserving movement while completing her graduation project and experimenting the qualities of polyurethane resin. Her final outcome was a project titled “Buitenbeentje,” Dutch translation for “odd man out,” where Haar created furniture (tables, chairs and stools) by cutting a hole in the furniture and dripping plastic material through the hole. Haar comments on her designs:
This research is the result of my fascination for everything that differs the normal: the odd man out, the freaks. Certain appearances that are so ugly and disgusting that they become interesting.
The stalactite-esque drippings on sunglasses were Anna ter Haar’s first attempt at fashion accessorizing. So what’s next? A necklace? Some earrings? Drip stilettos perhaps! I want more!
Thanks Anna ter Haar!
Runway: John Richmond Spring/Summer 09 Collection

I guess gray is the new color for men’s wear according to John Richmond, a little bit washouty but def a great cohesive collection. More masculine than most shown recently, very wearable, and def edgy.
What do you indies think? Yay or nay?
Runway: Backstage at Giuliano Fujiwara’s Menwear, Spring/Summer 09

Officially proves that men are pansies. Hopefully, the beefcakes from Westwood come over and beat the girly crap out of these men. Feathers in the hair is the ultimate no no for a guy’s guy, and the long crotch are just a form of trickery (if you know what I mean). Also, I know Andre Leon Talley is trying oh so hard to bring back the turban, but the upside down garbage can is not the way to go about that trend.

Runway: Gucci, Fall 08

Frida Giannini has won me over completely with her Fall 2008 Ready-To-Wear collection, I am in love with every single stitch, of every single piece. Her sexy, confident style manifested itself this time as a Russian, hippie, rock chick, but one who can afford to look that way luxuriously. Peasant blouses, straight leg hipsters, fringed riding boots, flirty dresses, vests, trench coats, and lots of fur were layered, embroidered, printed, studded and accessorized to the max with gold chains, heart necklaces and pirate-esque belts.

Eight, magnificent, floor trailing dresses were the last pieces to show, some draped goddess style, some with sashes, some printed with feather patterns. The details were pivotal to the collection as well, like the adorable gold and black clutches bearing the Gucci logo, and the studded strappy heels. It was nice to see some color and pattern from a fashion week that was one all black show after another. This collection will definitely make for amazing shopping with its broad range of separates, and unique pieces.
Runway: Versace, Fall 08

Outerwear was a strong focus at Versace, and Donatella showed us everything from exaggerated versions of military coats, to sleek colored motorcycle jackets, great leathers and wool overcoats. The collection was inspired by the paintings of art deco artist Tamara de Lempicka– a fave or Madonna and Jack Nicholson– and the inspiration was reflected in a dark, brooding palette and oversized proportions. photos: men.style.com
