Expect  interviews with the Gala’s co-chairs Carey Mulligan, Miuccia Prada and Anna Wintour as well as various celebrities as they saunter into the Museum’s newest exhibit, Schiaparelli and Prada: Impossible Conversations.

The garment: Yves Saint Laurent “Mondrian” day dress from the autumn 1965 collection

The inspiration: Piet Mondrian‘s famous grid and primary color paintings, like Composition with Yellow, Red, and Blue, 1927 shown above

The history: As the sack dress evolved into the more figure-flattering shift in the 1960s, YSL saw this new shape as the perfect canvas for color blocking. Looking to contemporary artists who fit in with the 1960′s mod vibe, Mondrian’s colorfully linear work was a perfect match for the silhouette.

Schiaparelli managed to turn fashion into an art form with innovative designs and concepts such as creating a jacket with plastic hands in place of buttons. Schiap’s forward-thinking approach to design caused her rival Gabrielle Chanel to deride her as “that Italian artist who makes clothes.” Sounds like someone was totes jealz.

Throughout the twenties and thirties, Schiap was friends with several Surrealist artists including Man Ray, Marcel Duchamp and Jean Cocteau, but it was Dalí who would have the greatest influence on her.

He would also have an influence on Coco Chanel as the two allegedly had an affair while Dalí  was still married. Yeah, someone was super jealz.

Elsa Schiaparelli’s career in and influence on fashion will be highlighted this summer when Elsa Schiaparelli and Miuccia Prada: On Fashion debuts at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute. But until then, here’s how Schiap and Dalí changed the face of fashion.

In 1936, inspired by Dalí's painting Anthropomorphic Cabinet, the two created suits and jackets with bureau-drawers as pockets.

Then in 1937, their "Lobster dress," featuring -- you guessed it -- a giant red lobster painted onto a white silk gown was made famous when Cecil Beaton photographed noted homewrecker Wallis Simpson in it for Vogue.

Inspired by a photo of Dalí balancing his wife's slipper on his head, that same year saw the debut of the infamous "Shoe Hat," a black felt number in the shape of a woman's pump with a heel in Shocking Pink -- another Schiaparelli innovation.

Dalí designed a trompe l'oeil print for an evening gown that simulated torn flesh in 1938. The "Tears Dress" also had actual tears strategically cut out to reveal an illusion of fur on the reverse side.

Utilizing trapunto quilting -- a puffy, decorative form of embroidery -- to create padded ribs, spine and leg bones, Schiap and Dalí struck again with the "Skeleton Dress," a highlight of her 1938 circus-themed collection.

Miuccia Prada is ranked 139th among the world’s ten-figure ballers with an estimated worth of $6.8 billion, thanks in part to Prada’s IPO on the Hong Kong stock exchange last year. Meanwhile, Miuccia’s husband and business partner Patrizio Bertelli takes a backseat with a paltry $3.7 billion.

Giorgio Armani‘s $7.2 billion fortune brings him in at #127 on the list with $7.2 billion while Ralph Lauren ties with Chanel owners Alain and Gerard Wertheimer at #122 with an estimated worth $7.5 billion.

The designers are unique on the list as most billionaires in fashion are the muckety-muck of the companies that own the labels, such as PPR‘s François Pinault (#59, $13 billion); Unqilo‘s Tadashi Yanai (#88, $10 billion); H&M‘s Stefan Persson (#8, $26 billion); and LVMH‘s Bernard Arnault, who for the second year in a row is the richest man both in fashion and in Europe, as well as the fourth richest person in the world with a net worth of $41 billion.

Yeah, it’s totally plausible that “I told them, but they don’t care” was a funny aside said with a self-deprecating chuckle and a playful roll of the eyes. And it’s totally plausible that after making these “out of context” statements, Miuccia went around slapping every underling that dared to even breathe in her general direction, which — when taken out of context — seems like a violent outburst but is really just a little thing the house of Prada does for kicks. Chef and founder of our favorite tex mex chain Chipotle, this man has been changing the face, waistline and conscience of fast food for the past decade.

Two of the wealthiest individuals in the world teamed up just over a year ago to convince America's wealthiest to pledge donations of huge sums of money to philanthropies. They've attracted 69 billionaires and over $150 billion already.

By juxtaposing Schiaparelli’s and Prada’s viewpoints on these topics, museum curators Andrew Bolton and Harold Koda hope to create a dialogue between the designers:

“If we can play with that idea of what Schiap would say, with her real words, and what Miuccia would say, in her real words, on a variety of issues,” Koda explained, “we could end up with something that was a mind-teaser for the audience, and would allow people to see Schiap with increased relevance and Miuccia with a different kind of understanding than they perhaps already have. We want it to be serious in content but playful in its approach.”

This approach will certainly be playful considering who the Met has in charge of the production and design: no other than that master of the spectacular spectacle, Baz Luhrmann. According to Koda, the exhibit will have “a very high-tech aspect” so as to bring the past to life.

On Fashion will run from May 10th to Aug, 19th and will include some 80 designs by Schiaparelli from the late Twenties through the early Fifties and by Prada from the late Eighties through today. The annual Gala — my ticket to which is clearly already be in the mail — will be chaired by Anna Wintour, Miuccia herself and Carey Mulligan — a Prada and Vogue fave as well as the star of Luhrmann’s upcoming adaptation of The Great Gatsby. Hello, multi-brand tie-in.

New York Fashion Week will take place Sept. 13th-20th, followed directly by London from Sept. 21st-25th with Milan squeezed in between from Sept. 19th-25th.  “Italian designers unanimously agreed on the schedule,” continued Boselli, “from the smallest brand to the biggest. They showed great solidarity and Italian pride.”

To me that sounds like one big “Suck it.” The four fashion capitals have been at each others’ heavily bejeweled throats over their respective fashion week dates — well, three of them have. HBIC Paris is too busy shutting. It. Down to care. [WWD]

“I am disgusted. I have no other words. I am disgusted and embarrassed: How can Italy tolerate Silvio Berlusconi and his bevy of girls?” Wintour admonished before going on to call Berlusconi a dictator and hoping that women protest against him during Milan Fashion Week.

Anna Wintour, revolutionary. Next thing you know, she and Franca Sozzani will get all Fidel Castro and Che Guevara — respectively — on Berlusconi and overthrow the Italian government themselves, appointing Miuccia Prada as their titular figurehead.

Vogue‘s HBIC also lauded Italy’s incomparable craftsmanship while criticizing its “compromised” political climate and wondering how people can “tolerate all this?” Well, it’s amazing what people can put up with under the iron thumb of a “dictator.” Just ask any Vogue staffer. [WWD]

Miuccia Prada and Elsa Schiaparelli are reportedly the focus of the Costume Institute’s next exhibit in the spring. Schiaparelli, who is as important to Italian fashion as Gabrielle Chanel is to French fashion, had a groundbreaking and innovative line between the two world wars but was unable to adapt in the wake of Christian Dior’s New Look.

While Prada is obviously one of the most successful and influential women working in fashion today and is also of Italian descent. No doubt the Institute’s curator, Andrew Bolton, will draw some parallels between the two women’s lives and careers. But for now, the Met is remaining mum on the matter. [WWD]

Then he kicked Miuccia Prada in the ladyparts by blasting her house’s recent IPO (initial public offering) stating that he didn’t need to go public since his company is a strong black woman –  independent and debt-free — while his clothes make men more handsome and elegant.

Enter noted old-man-beater and Tod’s chairman, Diego Della Valle. Valle, referring to Armani as a “sprightly old man,” said the designer’s attack didn’t “make any sense” and instead of playa-hatin’ he should just get in the game and go public himself:

“Rather than criticizing Prada’s strategies, Armani should do the same thing, invest in the territory, as I did in Rome, contributing to the restoration of the Colosseum. In a moment of crisis, it’s important to be part of a team, and it’s our duty to give a signal, not waste time in useless attacks.”

Round 3: Armani takes it to the streets. Armani wrote a letter to Corriere della Sera, Italy’s top newspaper, explaining that he would never compromise his creativity and his freedom by going public:

“I don’t need alliances, complicity, or need to surround myself with international jetsetters. I have too much respect for myself, for the public, and for the people that work both with me and the fashion industry to renounce any sort of intellectual honesty that influences and orients my life, even at the expense of attractive economic opportunities….I don’t need any of the money from the stock exchange — not for growth, not for globalization, not to aggregate my brand.”

The gauntlet has been thrown, or rather, limply tossed out since Giorgio Armani is literally 1000 years old. On the one hand, it’s understandable where he’s coming from. Once you have someone else to answer to besides yourself, there’s a definite loss of freedom. But on the other hand, Armani’s reaction seems more like a defense against the idea of change.

He’s been doing this fashion shtick for 900 years (he got started later in life); he’s used to dressing men a certain way, used to running his business a certain way but fashion never gets used to anything. Prada, which initially resisted an IPO, went public as a strategic business move that will allow for further expansion of the brand worldwide. Whether this will dilute or drastically alter the aesthetic vision, however, is something we’ll just have to wait to see. [WWD]

This is what fashion shows are made of. Prada delivered with innovation, execution and production.

Let’s start off with the set. Prada took their designs and put them on an artificial golf course green. Show attends were spread out in the space sitting on beautifully blue blocks.

The clothes were astounding. The label wanted this man to stand out. To do this they outfitted him in florals, embellished tops, and a number of prints. Miuccia Prada took so many risks and they seemed to have payed off on the runway.

No mens accessory was left unembellished or printed including the golf bag. It’s safe to say that there are not many flashy golf bags on the course, but after this show maybe so more fashionistos will be hitting all 18 holes.

I could literally go on and on about this collection. I’ll let the pictures speak for themselves. After viewing them you might understand how this quickly reached the top of best men shows this season yet.

- Miucci Prada made 9.7 million euros, or $12.7 million last year.

- Her current 5-year “consultancy agreement” ends in January of next year while her salary will not exceed 9 million euros for the current fiscal year, and 10 million for the next two.

- Meanwhile, her husband and Prada chief executive Patrizio Bertelli earned 10 million euros, or $13 million, and he has a similar “consultancy agreement” and salary caps.

- Both Miuccia and Patrizio own a 33.2% stake in Prada, while Miuccia’s siblings, Alberto Prada Bianchi and Marina Prada Bianchi, control 14.2% each.

- The European market makes up about 42% of revenue; North America, 14.6%; Asia Pacific, 32% and Japan, 11%

- 71% of business comes from retail and almost 30% from wholesale sales.

- Ready-to-wear accounts for 24% of revenue; footwear, 25% and leather goods, 50%.

- $114 million, 4.2% of revenue, was spent on advertising and promotion last year. [WWD]

Along with its commercial peak, fashion shows have also reached their creative peaks – moving, visceral, dramatic productions that have elevated them into an art form. Alexander McQueen emerged as the true master of the genre, blending the disparate elements of entertainment and ideology while creating beautiful works of clothing that could stand on their own without the hype and hoopla with which he was so famously associated.

Below is a list of the 10 fashion shows that stand as the greatest achievements of the last decade, based on their technicality and theatricality, their influence on fashion and of course, the clothes themselves.

Balenciaga – Fall 2006 Nicolas Ghesquière is lucky enough to have the rich Balenciaga archives, of which he has made great use over the years.  With this collection, he made the past and the house his own by reimagining and redefining the female silhouette, just as Cristobol Balenciaga had done decades earlier.

Alexander McQueen - "It's Only a Game" (Spring 2005) McQueen's "Game" was both fun and provocative, taking some of his most striking and whimsical designs (the king as a football player, a knight in a dress with a built-in pony-hair ponytail) and presenting them in a high-concept cultural chess game between East and West.

6. Viktor & Rolf - Fall 2001 Viktor Horsting and Rolf Snoeren love to put on a show, and this was one of their first shows to introduce them not only as master showmen but master craftsmen. Workig in a palette of all black, the design duo decided to take it one step further by covering their models -- and themselves -- in all black. If getting away with black face doesn't qualify you as a greatest fashion show, nothing will.

7. Chanel - Spring 2010 Haute Couture Karl Lagerfeld rarely makes a false move -- I mean, no one's perfect -- but he hit every step perfectly with this couture show. Aside from being brilliantly conceived -- the metallic elements flowing through were an especially inspired touch -- the Kaiser actually seemed to be having fun, while remaining true to the most prestigious fashion house in the world.

8. Tom Ford - Spring 2011 How fitting that one of the driving forces behind the rise of the fashion show to public spectacle would precipitate its return to the more personal atmosphere of the salon. Tom Ford's decision to debut his first womenswear show in six years free from the tents and the all-seeing eye of the blogosphere is slowly inspiring other designers who might also prefer their collections with a hint of privacy and control. However, it is still too early to know exactly how influential this trend will be.

Marc Jacobs - Spring 2008 Though most famous -- or infamous -- for starting a whopping two hours late (gotta keep the audience on their toes), Jacobs's ditzy, disheveled backwards romp through a woman's dressing routine proved to be worth the wait and included his most fun and irreverent designs -- and accessories -- to date.

10. Prada - Spring 2011 The now ubiquitous Spring 2011 collection saw Miuccia Prada in bold and Technicolor top form. Not only her best collection in seasons, those Baroque monkeys and Josephine Baker homages cemented Prada's reputation as one of the most influential houses in the world and one of the most sought-after brands for women.

Oh little Hailee Steinfeld. Beating down the women three times her age on the red carpet. She looks so chic in this Miu Miu dress, even though it looks a touch old on her. The glitter shoes are to die for and her hair and makeup is truly perfection. Miuccia Prada certainly picked the perfect face for the Miu Miu job.

Miuccia Prada and chief executive officer Patrizio Bertelli own a 95% majority stake in the company and will sell about 15% of that, while Banca IMI-Intesa Sanpaolo Group is expected to sell its 5.1% share, thus meeting Prada’s goal of a 20% public listing.

Whereas Prada’s decision to go public in Hong Kong is an attempt to capitalize on China’s rapidly growing luxury sector, fellow Italians Ferragamo and Moncler, who are also going public, will list on the Italian Stock Exchange.

Despite its record year of profits, Prada still had a debt of $575 million at the end of the fiscal year in January, leading to speculation that going public was a means to get their affairs all squared up. [WWD]

Of course the true Prada shoe here is striped from ankle to toe, and the sole has sneaker traction. These shoes are built to last and born to run, and thus may set you back around $700, if you can find them.

Topshop stripes the sole and weaves the wedge for their Prada iteration. Though not available online yet – they’re keeping us waiting on the good stuff – they’ll hit at $135.

Meanwhile, these yellow Aldo lookalikes run $100, and will undoubtably feel like Aldo’s. Though to be honest, I’m digging the Limoncello sole stripe fused with the light brown leather of the sandal.

Desire though you may, if you can’t actually get your toes on a pair of Prada‘s, at least there are choices out there for us that stem from Miuccia’s inspirations. Until we’re raking in the big bucks and can rest our tootsies in any wedge we damn please, let’s take a moment to appreciate where our new favorite mass market shoes truly come from.

Well, that fell through and now 8 former employees of the superstar’s Raising Malawi charity are suing her over the loss of their jobs. Madge, just leave helping out Africa to the pros: Oprah and Angelina Jolie. [Guardian]

Cassavetes’ love the of the private ritual that takes place among women provided the inspiration for the film:

“I love the sense of intimacy. It’s a place away from men, where you can check out other women, and re-glamorize yourself ready to face the world again.”

I guess men don’t really have that sort of intimacy in the bathroom…at least not the kind that doesn’t end in a scandal and public resignation.

Faye Dunaway out for the kill in 'Mommie Dearest'

Miuccia Prada featured turbans (often sans pants) for her Spring 2007 collection and it was coincidentally the last show of hers that I truly loved.

That collection, and turbans in general, remind me so much of classic Hollywood, when glamor was written in giant lighted bulbs across the screen. Some of the greatest fashion moments have occurred on celluloid, and occurred before most of us were even born. Classic films perfected the art of costuming so that what a character wore was a direct extension of who they were. So a woman in a turban could symbolize power, wealth, glamor, intrigue or just plain old insanity.

Case in point, Gloria Swanson as tragic movie queen, Norma Desmond in Sunset Boulevard.

She was glamor. She was also crazy. Desmond kills her young gigolo played by William Holden, whom she met after mistaking him for the man who had come to bury her pet monkey. That kind of crazy.

A turban also gave the wearer an air of regal beauty. Lana Turner was absolutely stunning as Cora in The Postman Always Rings Twice, the gold digging femme fatale who plots to kill her husband when she falls for a drifter who recently came to town, played by John Garfield. Okay, there was a lot of crazy flying around back in the day.

Perennial fashion icon, Audrey Hepburn, in the quintessential fashion film, Breakfast at Tiffany’s, dons a turban to sing the plaintive classic “Moon River.” She’s literally wearing a Hanes sweater and a towel as a turban, yet it’s so effortlessly chic and simple. Fun fact, a Hanes sweater cost a whopping  three lizard eggs back in 1961 when this film came out.

The turban doesn’t always have to be for dramatic effect, though it certainly works well as such. It’s a fun accessory that can add a completely different dimension to an outfit, which was what Prada showed all those seasons ago. A shirt can be more than just a shirt. There are infinite possibilities to wear any number of articles of clothing, by adding and subtracting, building and deconstructing. It’s what makes fashion resonate: the ability to transform.

We can’t think of another fashion film that stars trees sprouting from handbags, tiny blue people playing tennis, and twiggy little stick figures sporting ruffle-front dresses. But that’s what Prada is for.

The couple is considering putting Prada shares up for sale in Hong Kong next year. BANANAS!

Where is all the excitement in all of this hot mess, we know fashion is all about setting and meeting new and inspirational marks but I’m not going to lie, I am not the biggest fan of what could be the next take on fashion and those amazing look books we all creepishly look at. Miuccia Prada’s fashion fantasy for the fall/winter 2010 lookbook is really on the audacious side of how to portray this up and coming season.

“No promiscuous models filled with sex appeal, or bizarre countries that we only dream about in the background…Atleast now we can say we all know what Miuccia Prada dreams about at night…”

The dress, an appliqued Miu Miu creation, is on W, British Vogue and Elle UK. To be fair, we should mention that the dress Lily Allen wears on the cover of Elle is done in a muted lilac lace, while Eva Mendes (on W’s cover) and Swedish model Freja Beha Erichsen (on British Vogue) are both seen in the yellow version.

So how did it happen? We’re flabbergasted, and, well, so is Fox:

Surprisingly, this sort of cover multiplicity is rare. Actors frequently chalk up multiple dresses in the same month, but not magazine covers. There are good reasons for this. Fashion press officers work hard to achieve a delicate UN-style political balance between glossies to make sure that these kinds of overlaps don’t happen. “Usually press offices are pretty good at making sure we don’t get the same dress as our rivals,” says Lorraine Candy, Elle’s editor.

So we have to wonder what happened here — could Miu Miu be so hard up for publicity that it would need to trick three magazines into using its dress? Do we really believe Miuccia Prada is capable of doing something so schemey? No. She’s a sweetheart. And she makes really good clothes — good clothes that, clearly, beg to be photographed.

Lady GaGa was looking as gorgeous as ever sitting next to Miuccia Prada at the Costume Institute Gala on Monday night.

As we mentioned before, Gagita opted for a simple Prada black shawl-collar tuxedo after her performance rather than a gown of some sort.

We like!

Miuccia Prada presented her A/W10 Miu Miu collection in a magnificent Parisian villa – number 34, Avenue Foch. Willy Vanderperre was there to capture the magic. Check out the exclusive film on Another.

The designer behind Miu Miu and Prada apparently only likes her girls one size: model.

While working on the upcoming production of “Attila” for the Metropolitan Opera, the designer reportedly refused to work on the “curvy” performers, stating that she only designs for the insanely thin.

“I cannot clothe them! I need models!” she reportedly groaned.

Apparently, the Met is now on the hunt for clothes hangers to give to the thin obsessed designer.

A rep for the opera company told the Post that casting “is at the discretion of the creative team. Due to a change in concept, the Met is in the process of recasting” some of the extras.

Miu Miu’s spring 2010 show in Paris brought about many different patterns. From shoes to jackets, a majority of the items were covered in playful images—cats, birds, and daises to name a few. The motif’s transcended beyond the garments as details on numerous bags that also were shown as part of the collection.

The images all made a bold statement down the runway, but my favorite had to be the cat design.

Miuccia Prada had it raining cats and dogs (and birds!) at her Miu Miu Spring 2010 show in Paris. Prints were in full effect throughout the collection, decorating several high-waisted pantsuits, severe collared button ups, cropped jackets and pencil skirts. Some pieces ever aired on the revealing side, allowing sneak peeks of belly skin beneath the layers of tailored suiting. Long, scraggly braids complimented the looks well, adding a touch of carefree innocence to the collection.

She told Vogue that “Miuccia Prada as her style icon. To work with Prada or Miu Miu would be the dream. I adore Prada. Miuccia Prada never follows others – I’m so excited to see each new collection.”

When asked about models tripping up in her runway shows, Miuccia stated she enjoys the occasional faceplant.

In an interview for the September Issue of W magazine, Miuccia made this startling statement.

“I liked it,” she said, smiling, careless of her teen models’ obvious anxiety. “It made the show more interesting.”

Right, cause your amazing designs weren’t enough.

A couple months ago we told you about Miu Miu tapping Katie Holmes for Spring 2009.

Vogue UK has just unveiled one shot from the campaign.

Shot by Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott, Katie wears a Miuccia Prada-designed dress. The shoot was reportedly inspired by Fellini films and is intended to radiate “mystery and theatricality.”

I’ve always thought Katie photographed well. And while I dislike the short hair on her, the true-to-Miu Miu lighting and styling suit her well.
