We began the fashion search at Maguire Steele, the PR company that represents Timo Weiland, a designer we thought would evoke their clean cut hippiness. We arrived to find access to not only Timo, but to the Shipley & Halmos and Billy Reid collections, and Duckie Brown shoes. What a lovely way to start the day. Jeff was surprised to find himself liking this salmon Shipley blazer and green saddle shoes by Duckie; once he put them on, he saw the magic in them. Color and fit; bright and tight. That’s the vision.

Playing the green Timo Weiland vertically striped cardigan against the horizontally striped Billy Reid shirt made for optical illusionism – perfect for on-stage psychedelia. We tried with two Shipley & Halmos ties, one a conglomeration of pin thin geometric shapes, the other made of a mustard velvet (which totally called for heavy petting). We’re taking all of it along.

In the looks above, note the Shipley and Halmos pants: crisp, paper thin, glowing blue. Jeff really dug the look and feel of them. This sparked our next stop – Zara. Known in the masculine for modestly priced, modernly cut suits, I thought he might find a pant with a similar fit. Unfortunately, no fancy pants there captured our attention quite like Shipleys; the drawback to going from such a quality level of design down to one of the quickest of the fast fashion powerhouses (2 week turnaround from sketch to shelf!).

We did however conquer his need for new jeans. Imagine, he’s never owned a pair of skinny jeans! FashionIndie’s first instinct was mustard, for its ability to bring a bright spice to the stage. The look on his face when Mustard Slim Cut Jeans were suggested was dubious to say the least. We insisted he give it a try. In the fitting room, dubious shifted to contemplation, and very quickly to impressed contentment. Sold! To the man in yellow. He liked the fit so much, he got them in heather black as well. (TIP – Gentlemen, go to Zara right now… they’re only $39!)

We perused the rest of rushed retail row on Broadway from Broome to Bleecker from Urban Outfitters to Uniqlo, but nothing was jumping out at us. Man, were we spoiled by the gorgeous goods at Maguire Steele. Plus, mass market seems no place to find pieces to encapsulate the unique Heavy Pets sound. Time to switch things up,take it down real low, down all the way to Brooklyn’s poppin’ top vintage haunt, Beacon’s Closet.

Our instructions for The Pet: grab anything that strikes you. With that we end up with armfuls psychedelic patterns, bronze grommets, cowboy flair and a polyester disaster that shall remain on the hanger.

We pruned the options, ready to take eight new/old shirts in their varying sizes back to the rest of The Heavy Pets. The first piece on the rack? Pierre Cardin, $18.95. He looked at it skeptically, FashionIndie looked at it delightedly on him; we managed to convince acception with the tidbit that Pierre Cardin did introduce The Beatles to the Nehru jacket. Done and done.

The full styling goes down around 6:00 p.m. this evening when they are done with the soundcheck. As they are musicians, and this is fashion, that time is of course a rough estimation. But when it happens, we’ll be live tweeting @FashionIndie & @JessicaLapidos.

The original and the best. Many have tried, but none compare to the voodoo master. When performing this song, Screamin’ Jay would wear a cape and emerge from a coffin on stage–not to mention the fog, real live snakes, tusks in his nose, and a rather charming cigarette-smoking skull called Henry. He’s kind of a lunatic.

2. Bauhaus: Stigmata Martyr

Talk about commitment! The Godfathers of Goth used to drive around in a funeral car called the Bauhearse, and when performing the sorta cliché vampire hit “Bela Lugosi’s Dead,” manorexic singer Peter Murphy would hang upside down like a bat. For ten minutes. But now that vamps have been co-opted by sparkly Twihards, we look instead to this tortured ode to a fucked-up Catholic childhood…he and Riccardo Tisci at Givenchy would probably be besties.

3. The Horrors: Sheena is a Parasite

When the big-haired, twig-legged Horrors emerged in 2006 with names like Spyder Webb and Joshua Von Grimm, you kind of knew what you were gonna get. They’ve since ditched the spooky kid names, but their debut single (and creepmaster Chris Cunningham‘s video) can still make the hairs on the back of your neck stick up. At only 90 seconds long, it’ll leave your guests wondering what the hell just happened.

4. The Sisters of Mercy: This Corrosion

There’s an eerie children’s choir, lead singer Andrew Eldritch looking miserable in the rain, and the broad looks like Elvira with less impressive cleavage. ‘Nuff said.

5. Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds: Red Right Hand

Some more song titles from Nick Cave‘s oeuvre: “I’m Gonna Kill That Woman,” “Release the Bats,” “Jack the Ripper,” and an entire album of Murder Ballads. Any song from the coolest Australian ever would do, but it’s this Scream staple that’s regarded as his most disturbing. Cave’s sinster, strained vocals, the skulking beat, and the murderous lyrics sound like a horror movie come to life. That hand’s red for a reason.

6. Roky Erickson and the Aliens: I Walked With a Zombie

This is what happens when you take a lot of hallucinogenic drugs. After spending some time in a hospital for the criminally insane, psychedelic legend Roky Erickson wrote a whole album devoted to ghouls, aliens, demons, and just being totally nuts. That said, you can probably outrun a zombie.

And finally, put on Thriller. It’s a jam, and after all this doom and gloom, your creeped-out friends will probably just want to dance.

With passionate electronic beats, danceable rhythms and sweet harmonies, Shy Child are destined to be noticed, one keytar solo at a  time.

The duo, comprised of Pete Cafarella (vocals, keytar) and Nate Smith (drums) formed in  NYC back in 2000, and toured Japan in 2004. They toured the U.K. in 2006, and opened for Hot Chip on tour after that. 

Next came the singles “Drop the Phone” and “Noise Won’t Stop” in 2007, and they supported Klaxons while they went on tour.   2010 might just be the year for Shy Child, however – they are releasing their 4th studio album “Liquid Love,” along with a remix album.

A new Colette art exhibit from the artist Comenius Roethlisberger, with giant chocolate blocks carved with designer logos has just opened.

You’ll notice the logos are white, and that’s because they’ve been filled with a mix of powdered sugar and cocaine.

Finally, a way to keep models away from the drug, dip it in chocolate. The extra calories just aren’t worth the high.

Comenius Roethlisberger will be giving New York a fresh hit on March 26th – 30th during scope, new york.

Okay, The Unisex Salon‘s Don’t Look Down is rocking on my Zune (f*ck iPods) as I write this post. I want to describe their sound which feels a little like Queens of the Stone Age with a little bit more dirty rock n roll. Regardless of what the sound is, it’s worth a listen (check out their myspace). You can get a good listen of the band this Wednesday when they rock out The Mercury Lounge, 217 East Houston Street, New York. Tickets are $10 (which is so worth it, how often do you get to see a rockstar in a feather headdress.)

Moss partied the night away in trendy West London night spot The Notting Hill Arts Club. She was there to party with the Semi Precious Weapons as they rocked and continued on their tour of London. Jealous is not the word to describe this feeling, it’s more like blind, uncontrolled envy. Congrats Justin, you know you rocketh best.

February 9, 2008. Day 1, post Fashion Week, and the parties continue. Tenjune is considered one of the hottest clubs in NYC (P. Diddy hosting his after party on Friday and Paris Hilton making out with Elijah Dushku) so stopping by on a Saturday night after a week of celebrating the most fabulous people that embody the city that is NY, should not be a disappointment by any means. After standing in the cold and screaming “Alex,” to anyone that would respond (the infamous door guy), we entered the mecca that is…Tenjune, unzipped our coats, showed off the ‘girls,’ and looked around.

Step one: find “brother” Jimmy and his table of cheap champaign and water bottles posing as liquor. Step two: take shelter next to 1 of 8 jersey girls who wear v-neck poly-blended sweaters as dresses and play arts and crafts with sequins and nylon to create “bras” for their saggy grandma tits that they think is some kind of asset to score some ass. I first met a pro football jock right out of college wearing a baseball cap, t-shirt, and ripped up jeans. While trying to comprehend the pronounciation of my name, he checked out the leggings on jersey girl no. 1. and the fake nails on jersey girl no. 2. He was pretty cool. I obviously had no game. I guess my outfit just didn’t scream easy, cheap slut enough.

Jersey Chicks over 30 + Dudes Who Still Think their Varsity Football Stats Matter + Over-priced, Watered Down Drinks = Saturday Nights at Tenjune

Amid the 30 something blonde in cow print boots and her cousin 5 ft away in a matching cow print dress, we start to scope the scene away from our table (god forbid we leave). We danced, laughed, and checked out the unattractive, undesirable species that surrounded us. How could such a hotspot breed all of this synthetic trash?Isn’t the sourpuss guy at the door (Alex) supposed to be in control of this department?

About one painful hour into our “exclusive” experience, the party actually started to take flight. The DJ was exceptionally talented given the unfortunate circumstances of a lame, ego enduced crowd. A false eye seemed to spot Will-I-Am looking for his posse, only to find the first of a handful of style coming through the door. The cool people meter starts fluctuating with socialites making a non-dramatic entrance into the club and then fading into the crowd just as fast. The few post-fashion week stragglers still struggling to make it out one more night are sporting off the shoulder, paisley print dresses, fedora hats, skinny ties with vests, and a plethora of skin.

For some brief fleeting moments our hopes lifted and the night didn’t seem like a total waste, our only saving grace seemed to hit the repeat button as more and more potentially interesting people tricked in, but then the music turned sour and so did the scene. It was time to call it a night and take on the identity of a cow (seems fitting at this point) in a heard of cattle to retrieve our coats.

Pretentious nerds, sleezy promoters, and sequins galore, we pondered the previous 2 hours. Finally, we came to 3 fair and rational conclusions: 1. a new promotional idea – “Saturday: all from across the Hudson welcome!” 2. find out the name the DJ and become his #1 fan 3. next time just go to The Box.
