CFDA’s Move from the Garment District Ruffling a Few Sequined Feathers

Located at 1412 Broadway for the last 15 years, the CFDA has been, as president Diane von Furstenberg puts it, the “soul of the Garment District” — working tirelessly to preserve the once thriving neighborhood with initiatives such as the CFDA Incubator and Made in Midtown. Now that the Council is planning to physically abandon the District, some fear it will also leave the Garment…out to dry.

Indie Designers: This Sourcing Book Will Save Your Life

I’ve discovered The Sourcer’s Stone; a rock to cling to when every textile mill I call tells me “3,000 yard minimun! 1,000 yard per color!” A guiding light when I’m googling and cold calling mills about a specific fabric. My support system when it feels like there’s hardly anybody left in NYC that will sew a garment for a reasonable price! Enter The Designer’s Guide, which lists only low-minimum fabric resources, and The Sourcer’s Guide, which additionally gives precious information about contractors, pattern makers, cutters, and trim resources. And you can search by fabric in great detail. Let me explain.

Fashion Wars: Lincoln Center v. Milk Studios

Ever since Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week moved from the tents at Bryant Park to the metaphorical tents at Lincoln Center, more and more designers have opted instead of external sites to hold their fashion shows. One of the most popular venues, Milk Studios, is now in direct competition with Lincoln Center for both sponsors and designers.
