1. The Big Lebowski (1998) Years before the Coen brothers got all serious and Cormac McCarthy on us, they created the greatest stoner in the history of cinema -- Jeffrey "The Dude" Lebowski: a white-Russian-swilling, bathrobe-in-the-middle-of-the-day-wearing, pin-striking, ass-kicking, Julianne-Moore-shtupping masterwork of a human being, man.

2. Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle (2004) A trip for some late night munchies has some unexpected consequences but perhaps the most surprising thing about Harold & Kumar is just how smart and well-observed it is, painting one of the most true-to-life and accurate portraits of young stonerdom. That and the resurgence of The Actor Currently Known as NPH, Neil Patrick Harris.

3. Pineapple Express (2008) I saw this movie in theaters three times when it first came out. Meaning I paid to see this movie three times. And in the age of the illegal download that's saying something. Why did I go back so often? Two words: James Franco. Sure I loved the completely gratuitous violence, the stupid (but still side-splitting) jokes and of course Rosie Perez as a foul-mouthed pocket-sized cop, but Franco made the movie in a, yes, career-defining role as the kind-hearted but dim-witted dealer Saul. Of course, said career till then was mostly as Peter Parker's sidekick and one season as Daniel Desario, but I digress.

4. Friday (1995) In the vast Ice Cube film canon, the original Friday looms large. Thanks to his loudmouth stoner friend Smokey, played by professional loudmouth Chris Tucker, Ice Cube's Curtis faces certain doom unless he and Smokey can come up with $200 -- it is 1995, after all -- to pay back the drug dealer, Big Worm. A series of trials and tribulations contribute to Curtis' life, but in the end it turns out to be a good day. And he didn't even have to use his AK.

5. Rolling Kansas (2003) When their town runs dry, a group of friends embark on a road trip to a fabled, government-owned marijuana farm to find their fortune. Directed and co-written by Thomas Haden Church (of Wings and Sideways fame) and featuring a hilarious cameo by Rip Torn, this little indie gem is about as delightful as any great high.

6. Dazed & Confused (1993) What feats of thespian fortitude it took for noted bongo enthusiast Matthew McConaughey to portray stoner David Wooderson we'll never know. But it's all right, all right, all right, because even though we all get older, this movie stays the same: awesome.

7. How High (2001) Redman and Method Man proudly carried the torch that Ice Cube sparked and passed years earlier with one of the dumbest/most creative plots ever for a stoner movie: using his dead friend's ashes as weed fertilizer, Mef smokes the resulting bud with Red before taking their THCs, Testing for Higher Credentials-- see what I mean. All through the movie the two get fucked up and fuck up higher education, along the way giving Lisa Turtle something to do.

8. Half Baked (1998) From the minds of Chappelle's Show creators, Dave Chappelle and Neal Brennan, Half Baked was born. In order to bail one of their idiot friends out of jail, three other idiots sell weed stolen by Chappelle's Thurgood from his job as a janitor in a pharmaceutical lab. There are a lot of high hijinks, some of which have not aged well, but the best parts are Chappelle pulling double duty as pothead rapper Sir Smokes-a-Lot and cameos from marijuana magistrates like Snoop Dogg and Willie Nelson.

9. Reefer Madness (1936) Back when marijuana -- the devil's leaf, wacky tobaccky, the dreaded reefer -- was perceived as the downfall of Western Civilization, Hollywood reacted in kind with this propaganda film meant to scare the youth of the day away from the the jazz, the hooch and the dangerous Mary Jane. Decades later, the hysteria is just plain hysterical as the lives of its thinly-drawn protagonists literally go to pot.

10. Smiley Face (2007) Following his dark, critically-acclaimed ode to male hustling, Mysterious Skin, Gregg Araki decided to lighten things up a little with Smiley Face, starring Scary Movie stalwart Anna Faris as a perpetually stoned actress whose life gets flushed down the toilet thanks to a series of increasingly worse misadventures after eating her roommate's pot brownies. The film is by no means perfect and kind of drifts along aimlessly -- it is a stoner film after all -- but it's at least worth watching for Farris' perfectly dazed performance.

- Neil Patrick Harris and house husband David Burtka need to get a room, but instead the happily married queens put their love on display for the February issue of Out magazine. [Out]

- Grammys Love Cool J. Rapper/actor/my baby daddy LL Cool J will host the 54th annual Grammys, the first time the “awards” show will have a proper host in some seven years. [Deadline]

- After 14 years of clandestine lovin’, Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis are allegedly hitting the proverbial rocks. [People]

- PETA is taking issue with fox fur merkins. Because a fox and a pussy should never cohabitate. [Huff Po]

- A commissioner in Shreveport, LA is pushing to have pajamas banned in public. And I say bravo. Back in my day you didn’t step out of the house without a full face — and by “you” I clearly mean “I” and by “my day” I clearly mean “yesterday.” [Shreveport Times]

- Funny ladies/Cover Girls Ellen DeGeneres and Sofia Vergara apply a little lip-shtick on the former’s daytime show.

What better way to welcome in the new year than with Drew Carey grilling Neil Patrick Harris, Snoop Dog, Heidi Klum, Jenny McCarthy, and Chris Daughtry on prices of various home goods and electronics? Well maybe I can think of a few. But if you’re calling out on January 2nd because you’re still too hungover from NYE, or you have a seriously underrated New Year’s Day party, you can get your fill of The Price is Right with some likely jaded big-spending consumers.

‘Twas a lovely affair and a beautiful moment, made all the lovelier and more beautiful by the wardrobe choices of my dear friends and I, who trekked from our then-questioning state of New York to the brisk, open shores of Massachusetts. So with wedding season upon us and Neil Patrick Harris already planning his pas de bourrée down the aisle, what does one wear to a gay wedding?

For the beach-side wedding of our friends — and Massachusetts residents — Alec and Brooks (seen above with Brooks’ niece), my gaggle of gays and I spread our sequined capes and caught a strong breeze up to Cape Cod.

Ever since those kooky kids got engaged last year, my friends and I have been planning our wedding attire.  It being the first gay wedding for all of us — and judging by the pace of our collective love lives, probably the last — we were excited and eager to don our matrimonial best.

But there was so much to consider:

A.) It’s a gay wedding, so a fair amount of flair is needed and leeway afforded.

B.) It’s a beach wedding, thus requiring a less stuffy sartorial selection and making choice in footwear particularly difficult.

C.) Then there was our natural and uncontrollable propensity to upstage. This wasn’t our wedding, after all — and out of respect of our friends and their family and friends, perhaps a jet-black drop-crotch, bold-shouldered bodysuit was not the most sensible choice.

A year — and several crash diets, a Royal Wedding and many a discarded theme — later, we came together in a romantic and sartorial triumph…which quickly descended into a joyfully weepy mess. The joy was doubly powerful, though, because as Alec and Brooks were exchanging their vows, we were aware that we, too, could follow in their footsteps in our very own state.

And that was a source of immense pride for all of us.

Below are pics of what we finally decided on wearing. There were several shorts, dressed up with blazers and an occasional tie; a lace Rodarte pant that was surprisingly mens; white was a popular choice, jazzed up with a mixed print; and in an ode to Will and Kate‘s nuptials, I wore a fascinator.

I also chose a subtle Oriental fan as an accessory….What can I say, it’s a gay wedding —  sometimes you gotta fan the flamers.

Now, I know you didn’t watch the Tonys — even I tuned out after growing tired of waiting for Patti Lupone to rip out Kristin Chenoweth‘s weave, but since this is the future, Brooke’s blunder is a moment that will live on forever and ever. Or at least till something with a cat doing something ornery and cute overtakes the Interwebs…in about 5 seconds.

- First season DVDs of Glee and How I Met Your Mother. Glee’s Rachel Berry is the perfect example of what can go wonderfully right and horribly wrong with the child of two gay dads, while fellow real-life gay dad Neil Patrick Harris became America’s Sweetheart again thanks to How I Met Your Mother, or as I like to refer to it, The Only Reasonably Watchable Show on CBS.

- Origins Anti-aging serum. If there’s one thing gay dad needs is the reassurance that though he may be getting old, he’s still looks better than the other moms on the PTA. Sure, without the stress of childbirth he’s already ahead of the game, but why not put off the Botox train’s imminent arrival with Origins Plantscription Anti-aging serum. It’s clinically proven to help fight and reverse advanced visible aging signs…the gift that keeps on (subtly) hinting.

- Patti Lupone: A Memoir. Every gay dad needs to be in touch with his inner diva; it’s like his animal spirit, the guiding light of the days of the one life he has to live. And Patti Lupone can get anyone in painfully close contact with their inner diva. Her autobiography is basically one artistic triumph followed by one hysteric diva meltdown followed by one near-career-ending fall – lather, rinse, repeat. Give dad the drama he craves this Mother’s Day, or he’ll happily provide his own.

- Duckie Brown classic plaid shorts. Nothing says Happy Mother’s Day like good ole men’s tailoring. Ladies, am I right? Okay, maybe that’s not necessarily true, but gay dads are not traditionally honored on Mother’s Day, so why not give them something equally non-traditional? Duckie Brown adds more than a fair share of sass and slouch to men’s clothing and though my first instinct draws me to these drop-crotch pants, for gay dad a pair of fun, fashionable shorts that can take him from the grill to the bath house and back again seems a tad more appropriate.

- Tickets to Priscilla, Queen of the Desert on Broadway. With reviews like this: “Every conceivable surface has been decked with sequins, spattered with colored lights, plastered in mirrored chips or trimmed in feathers and fringe,” how could anyone resist? A feel-good musical about the original mothers of the world — drag queens — in a series of outlandish costumes and a disco ball’s worth of dance-pop hits, a trip to Priscilla will give gay dad a Mother’s Day he won’t likely forget…particularly with the number of buff, nearly naked go-go boys traipsing about. You gotta give daddy what he wants.

The show started off with a Glee-themed fagtastic bang with Tina Fey, Jane Lynch, Jon Hamm and last living Golden Girl Betty White (some say she’s overexposed, but she’s 800 years old and could go any minute so I’ll take as much as I can, thank you) joining the Glee kids and Fallon for a cover of “Born to Run.” It was pretty much downhill from there, but it was a gentle and slow descent, made more comfortable by getting all the fun awards out early.

Proving that there is a god somewhere, Jane Lynch (woefully sans a pantsuit yet again) picked up the Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy. Eric Stonestreet won a well-deserved Outstanding Supporting Actor for Modern Family, which also went home with the Outstanding Comedy Series trophy at the end of the night.

Edie Falco won her fourth Emmy, this time for Lead Actress in a Comedy Series. A controversial choice, perhaps, but Carmine Soprano literally shits Emmys . I’m holding out hope for Amy Poehler next year, though, that is if Parks and Rec makes it that long. And some guy from some show on CBS I will continue to ignore, I mean, Jim Parsons won Lead Actor.

My frequent nemesis January Jones might have lost to Kyra Sedgwick for Outstanding Lead Actress in  a Drama, but she won best dressed in my book, wearing a gorgeous Atelier Versace gown. Though I wish she had done her hair in a chignon and left the messy bed head hair to Cammy Diaz.

Aaron Paul -- Wrap him up, I'll take him to go.

Bryan Cranston picked up his third consecutive Emmy for Lead Actor for Breaking Bad and his hottie of a co-star Aaron Paul won for Supporting. Newcomer Archie Panjabi took home Outstanding Supporting Actress for The Good Wife. Then Mad Men sauntered off with the Outstanding Drama Series for the third year in a row.

Though Betty White and Neil Patrick Harris won for their guest starring roles on SNL and Glee, respectively, their trophies were handed out at the Shmemmys earlier, thus robbing us of what would surely have been a hot and heavy make-out session everyone…?…the gays…?…okay, that I have been anticipating since the nominees were announced.

That was one of a few disappointments in an otherwise — dare I say it? — great show. The awards, for the most part, went to the right people and I got to scream at Brittany Murphy and Rue McClanahan one more time during the In Memoriam slideshow. The fashion at the Emmys, however, left a lot to be desired.

The big theme of the night was Greek/Egyptian, with a lot of one shoulders, goddess gowns and geometric necklines, heavy on the jewelry and metallics.

The red carpet was a big snore, except for a few bright spots, such as Anna Paquin in Alexander McQueen and the aforementioned Betty Draper.

From what I’ve been reading, most people hate both of these looks, but that’s the price you pay for bringing high fashion to American TV sets.  There were, admittedly, some horrible missteps and yes I am looking at you Heidi Klum.

The usually flawless supermodel and Emmy nominee (?) opted for a Marchesa mini. Meanwhile, if I never see another Marchesa gown on the red carpet I could die happy. The amazing Lauren Graham also faltered a bit in Yigal Azrouël, riding that damned Grecian theme straight into hell.

Is that bracelet bulletproof?

Lea Michele went overboard with the ruffles in Oscar de la Renta and her boobs always looked as if they were about to jump ship as well.

She should have taken a cue from co-star Dianna Argon who looked beautiful in  Carolina Herrera.

I would have liked the dress to be a little shorter, however, about mid-calf,  to play off a 50s silhouette. But, as the New Directions kids put it, you can’t always get what you want. Then again, at least Lea didn’t follow in the tranny footsteps of her other castmate, Naya Rivera, who apparently thought she was going to a quinceañera.

God bless her for trying.

I can’t wait to hear what Joan Rivers has to say about all this, but until then, what’s your opinion? Who looked stunning and who just looked stunned?
