4 Weddings and How to Dress Appropriately for Each

Weddings: a time of joy and extraordinary inebriation. We love a good wedding (reception), especially when it comes to getting gussied up for the occasion. Unfortunately, not everyone is aware of appropriate wedding attire. At the last one I attended, I saw someone wearing jeans. JEANS! Granted this was in Ohio where the hillbillies roam free (love you homeland!), but the real truth stands, no one knows how to properly dress anymore. But if you need some assistance in this area, don’t fret. Here are four types of wedding – black tie, cocktail, daytime and casual – and the breakdown of what to wear for each.

You need to remember two things when you receive an invitation to a black tie wedding – gowns and tuxedos. Don’t even think about showing up in a short dress. Use this occasion to wear that elegant gown collecting dust in your closet, or treat yourself to something shiny and new. Strappy, sky-high shoes and a crystal-encrusted clutch are perfect for rounding-out the look.

Fairly self-explanatory in name, a cocktail hour wedding is exactly what it sounds to be. The reception typically begins between 5-7 pm with a cocktail hour and dinner to follow. By all means, wear a gown if it's not too formal, but do feel free to wear a cocktail dress. Nothing so short your ass is hanging out, but sparkles are always welcome and encouraged. Both the ceremony and reception take place during the morning and afternoon at a daytime wedding, so lighter colors and fabrics, prints and playful accessories are welcome. Dress like you're going to a proper, formal high tea. You can never go wrong with a floral dress, classic shoes and a fun, quirky bag.

And when I say "casual," I mean for a wedding; this is not an opportunity to wear cut-offs and a tank top. These tend to take place outdoors, on the beach or in a park, so dressing for nature is key. Flow-y fabrics look great in the breeze, and wedges won't sink into the ground when you stand. A large sun hat is both stunning and protects you from UV rays.

Karl for the Masses:Lagerfeld Label Launch

Karl Lagerfeld just continues to rake it in. The multi-tasking designer will launch his new affordable line, simply called Karl, on January 25th, aimed at girls in their late-teens and early 20s and available primarily online.

The collection will feature 100 pieces, ranging from $95 to $450, debuting via Net-a-Porter and coming to karllagerfeld.com February 28th. Karl pop-up shops are being planned in several major cities, with at least one in Paris, and a select 20 “high-visibility” retailers will also carry the line. The company will expand into menswear for the fall 2012 season.

While the Karl line is meant to appeal to the younger generation, Karl Lagerfeld Paris, a more upscale collection, will be targeted at retailers in Europe, the Middle East, Russia, Asia and “key fashion cities” of North America — sorry L.A. — with prices starting where Karl left off, $411 to $3,425.

These initiatives are meant to turn the Lagerfeld celebrity into a global brand that exists independently of the Chanel and Fendi houses. That, thankfully, does not mean an end to the king of collaborations crown. So you can still get your Macy’s T-shirts, your overpriced glassware and god knows what else the Kaiser plasters his name to, but fair warning, those co-branding opportunities will be fewer and farther between. Ponyhair, also called haircalf, comes mostly from cows and can even be made from buffalo and other animals. Ponyhair is considered, like fur, to be the pelt of the animal rather than the underside from where leather is taken. It’s typically more expensive than leather because the hair has to be treated, cut and sometimes dyed before using, but we think the price to pay is well worth it. What are your go-to pieces for a day-to-night Fashion Week wardrobe?
A perfect fitted suit. If it’s too hot out, I wear it with shorts and high heels.

What is in your Fashion Week survival kit?
Camera (as a blogger, I’m always ready for a Kodak moment!), concealer, some rouge (long days, you need to freshen up) and a pair of flat shoes

What is your diet during Fashion Week?
I don’t diet, I do Mexican food. God I love it (we don’t have it in Sweden)! I’ve been to the same restaurant for four days in a row for fish tacos, so that is my diet – the perfect diet.

What do you love most about the Tibi collection?
Tibi designs are really something everyone can wear, from head to toe. It’s all about how you style it, what girl you want to be. For the show, it will be an Elin Kling girl!

What is your favorite Fashion Week memory?
Omg I have so many. This might not be the best memory but the strongest one. I was here in NYC for a Swedish TV station. Everything went really well, but when we got to the Marc Jacobs show, they wouldn’t let my cameraman in. And hey, if I do TV hosting from NYC, I need the Marc Jacobs show. There were only a few minutes left until they closed the doors. So I walked out with my cameraman, told him to put the camera on record and I squeezed it in my Chloé bag, ran back to the show, smiled and they smiled back. As soon as I got inside I didn’t go to my seat, I placed myself with all the photographers and pulled the camera up from my bag to my shoulder. There is nothing that won’t work for me, you just have to make it work. And hey, I was a damn hot photographer in my monster heels!

The online retailer has added a new feature that allows you to see what’s being bought from their site and where in the world the purchase originates, all in real time. Unsurprisingly, there’s a lot of Juicy Couture devotees in New Jersey and nary a bathing suit in the Middle East.

Dubbed World View, at any given time you’ll be privy to the purchases of Net-a-Porter’s thousands of e-shoppers because, you know, you have nothing else to do.
