Summer, the season of travel, is upon us. Americans will criss-cross this vast land of ours, from sea to garbage-strewn sea, in search of god knows what. If they end up in any of these ten cities, however, they might care to avoid the sight of seeing the locals in their flannel finery. Travel + Leisure named America’s Worst Dressed Cities — find out who made the prestigious list after the jump!

Oh, Anchorage, Alaska. Where did it all go wrong? According to a survey of Travel & Leisure readers, America’s Favorite Cities, Anchorage has the worst-dressed people in the nation.

“It’s not uncommon to see oversized parkas with fur-lined hoods and bunny boots,” says Dr. Miriam Jones, a frequent visitor to Anchorage. “And people aren’t alarmed when a person wearing a ski mask enters a room.” Well, the same could be said about Harlem.

So I guess it’s not really their fault what with temperatures regularly below freezing. Which is a load of bull. There are definitely ways to beat the chill in style — a Chanel Wookiee suit immediately comes to mind.

While weather certainly is a factor in determining the way people dress, a look at the rest of the list suggests that climate is not the be-all end-all of style-casting. One also has to consider proximity to a major metropolitan city, level of taste and the presence of a Real Housewives franchise.

To wit, Dallas, Orlando and Atlanta all made the list.

City Cycling Chic: Terra Raincoats for Riders

Yuck, looks like the kind of day that’s going to rain all over a parading day of city cycling. The sky has turned to murk, and that means a mucked up outfit or a plastic poncho if you’re still planning on two-wheeling it to work. Bicycling has become so chic, what with its environmentally sound nature and efficiency for navigating the city, especially Brooklyn, but fresh rain gear for said cyclists has been a sad search. Which is why Yurika Nakazono and Marie Saeki did just what proper, frustrated New Yorkers should do. They created their own, well made and fit for a feminine body with a helmet: Terra New York.

What did you do for a raincoat before you created Terra? (and what flaws did you find?) Yurika Nakazono, whom is the creative director of the brand, and I [Marie Saeki, CEO] went through many non waterproof raincoats, and few [that were] waterproof but not that fashionable! I used to wear one from Muji, well done, very simple but we really wanted something more fun and stylish. It was hard to find something not casual; we did research, but really couldn't find anything. At the end, both Yurika and I, just gave up cycling when raining…until we made our own.

What do you wear on the rest of your body on your bike in the rain? When raining, underneath the Terra Lower East Side parka I'm wearing , Levi's jeans, Alice Ritter blouses (obsessed with them) or Marni tops. I'm never going out of my home without a scarf (love Hermès!). As for shoes, I just got the low rubber boots from Aigle. But soon I will switch for Terra New York, as we have a high heel boots in rubber for F/W 2012.

What about a helmet?? Bern! They do very cool helmets, I use the Brighton, customized with neon tapes.

What kind of bike can we see you riding?

I live in New York and have to park my bike in the street so, I have an old one that is very noisy, but no one will ever steal it!

Haus Alkire has dabbled in subtle psychedelics. The near-grayscale trip of mirrored shapes kaleidoscopes into light flowers over twisted classics. Julie Haus and Jason Alkire have been collaborating for over a decade, Haus running the design end with Alkire’s artwork and photography. The goal is melding fashion and art and they do so with haunting effects. Their flagship store thrives on Broome St. in SoHo, and they’ve just been granted the Ecco Domani Fashion Foundation award for womenswear. After 12 years of styling in New York City, Sara Beltrán took her fashionable self to Jaipur, India where she now creates jewelry sourced from the beaches she visits around the world. Talk about living the dream! She casts shells in gold, finds exotic stones and diamonds, scours fossilized sharks’ teeth and makes Mexican friendship bracelets as well. She was just announced the winner of the Ecco Domani Accessories Award and was granted $25,000 to continue on making whimsical jewelry that speaks to the sea lovers within us all. She named her label Dezso (the Latin word for desire) most likely because this was her greatest desire, and now it’s one of ours, too. See her seafaring wares here.

I’m so tired of hearing about the Kardashian klan, I could just keel. But cute younger sis twins Kylie and Kendall Jenner are the prettiest, plastic surgery and diet pill-free (at least we think) siblings of the bunch. Lovecat Magazine thinks so too, as the publication recently interview Kendall for Issue 3. One thing we’ve learned from the Q&A? Jenner loves exclamation points, maybe a little too much.

Kate Lanphear on Fav “Fierce Ass” Jewelry Designer & Elle Interns with Sweaters on their Heads

Kate Lanphear was the toast of Burberry Soho Wednesday night. The formidable Style Director of Elle stood stunning, as bloggers and industry darlings mingled, champagned and hardly touched the bite sized English fare that circulated. Fish’n'chips? Burberry, please! How are we supposed to talk to anyone? Perhaps I’m slightly sour at not winning this Burberry bag in the Instagram contest, but I’m more jazzed that I got to chat with the fearsome Lanphear. First things first, I lusted over her ring. And then she let me in on her favorite “fierce ass bitch” jewelry designer.

Loree Rodkin is the jewelry design rockstar in question. Her creation sits on Lanphear’s ring finger above and below, and blurs the line between medieval and and modern. Rodkin’s designs will be joining the permanent collection at the Smithsonian, not for the fact that they seem from another era, it is because Michelle Obama wore Loree Rodkins to the Inaugural address.

As conversation jumped from jewelry to boutiques, I asked her to let us in on her store crush of the moment:

“I shop in the east village. Anywhere I can go where things aren’t picked through.” [AKA we're never going to find out where she shops unless we see it with our own eyes. She doesn't want us picking through first.] “But it’s hard, I dont really want to shop on the weekends. On a Saturday I’d rather go to a bakery and eat pie, put some whiskey in my coffee.”

This brings us to pondering transformable clothing, that it means even if two people have the same thing, it will look entirely different. It’s not only the accessories you put with it, it’s where you wear it on your body; trying new silhouettes by wearing something not exactly as it’s meant to be worn. Like her interns at Elle.

“I love when interns come to work with sweaters wrapped around their head.”

Which thus led to ruminations on New York being the best city for self expression.

“Back in Virginia they dont think outside the box. That’s why I had to be here.”

And we’re so grateful made it here.

INTERVIEW: Yuko Shimizu, Creator of Rebecca Bonbon & Hello Kitty

Rebecca Bonbon isn’t your everyday pet bulldog. This adorable little pooch knows how to live, travel and shop in style. From her penthouse overlooking Central Park, Rebecca lives an ultra-luxurious life. Her personal chauffeur assures she shops at the finest boutiques on Fifth Avenue and in SoHo via the comfort of her limo. She never misses a show at Fashion Week and doesn’t travel without her private jet. But where did Rebecca come from? How does she live such a charmed life? I got a chance to ask Yuko Shimizu, creator of Rebecca Bonbon and the legendary Hello Kitty these questions and more. Check out our interview after the jump.

You created Hello Kitty many years ago. What made you want to create another character, Rebecca Bonbon, and what was the inspiration behind her?
I saw a French magazine on dogs and found a very cute bulldog. She reminded me of my own cat - they actually look a lot alike. That’s how I came up with the idea for Rebecca Bonbon. Hello Kitty is all grown up and has left my care. I wanted to create a new baby.

Rebecca Bonbon is from Paris but now lives in New York City. What made her want to move here?
An American girl, a New Yorker, went to France, found Rebecca and brought her back to New York. It’s such an exciting city where you can find the world’s best culture, fashion and entertainment, so it’s the perfect place for her.

Are Rebecca Bonbon and Hello Kitty friends?
As their creator, I think of these characters as children. Because of the age difference – Hello Kitty is 36 years old and Rebecca Bonbon only 5 – they are more like sisters than anything.

UNIQLO Roller Skates to the High Line

Our favorite Japanese retailer UNIQLO wants you to come roller skate with them under the High Line. That’s right, from July 28 – September 26, you can lace-up and spin round on the High Line Rink, NYC’s only open air skating rink presented by UNIQLO. But what makes this collaboration even cooler is the pop-up shop UNIQLO Cube where you can shop for your favorite essentials on the west side.

The High Line Rink, located at West 30th and 10th Avenue, will be open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday – Wednesday and 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Thursday – Saturday. The $12 admission fee includes skate rental for those not rolling up with their own pair. Various food trucks and booze from The Lot on Tap will be around for your enjoyment. Just when we thought UNIQLO couldn’t get any cooler…

What could be better than a month of celebrating Italian fashion design in New York City? Throw in food and wine, and you have yourself one of the greatest events of the summer. Presented by the Ministry of Economic Development and organized by the the Italian Trade Commission, Shop Italy NYC is a compilation of more than 35 influential Italian fashion, accessories and home décor retailers and Italian restaurants hosting a lively assortment of in-store events with special deals, promotions and activities for New York shoppers.

From June 15 to July 7, between 5 and 8 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday of each week, shoppers will experience everything the finest Italian retailers in Manhattan have to offer – June 15 and 16 in the Meatpacking District; June 22, 23, 29 and 30 on Madison Avenue; July 6 and 7 in SoHo.

INTERVIEW: Amanda Joy, Luxury Handbag Designer

Amanda Joy knows simplicity is important, especially in an industry constantly over-saturated with fleeting brands. In 2010, she left her career as an art director in the advertising industry to develop her unfussy, yet luxurious handbag. Her dedication to using only the finest materials for her exquisitely crafted line shows: there’s no doubt her collection will be a must have come this fall. We caught up with Amanda to talk about what goes into developing each bag, her philanthropic mindset and why manufacturing in New York City is important to her.

Why it is important to you that your products are produced in New York City?
There are so many reasons! First, it was about quality control and having the ability to be hands-on in the creation of my line during each stage of development. From the beginning, I imagined the line having a level of exclusivity to it, and manufacturing in New York City allows me to keep the production limited. Then it comes down to humanity. After learning about some of the unfortunate factory conditions globally, I wanted to know the people working on my collection were treated properly and paid well.

How involved are you in the creation of each bag? What goes into each product from design to production?
I am involved in every aspect of the collection. I design each bag myself and oversee it from idea to production. I start each season by choosing colors and the concept for every style, and the ideas begin to develop from there.

Each bag starts with a drawing, and from there, into a sample. Once a sample is finalized, all of the materials are handpicked and selected. After that, it is all sales, marketing and production. There is a great deal of work that goes on from conception to execution. Designing and picking colors is definitely the best part!

What are the must-have items in your bag?
Gloss, eyelash curler, Nars bronzer & brush, my iPhone and a digital camera.

What type of woman loves to carry your bags?
The ideal woman is stylish but has a relaxed, chic approach to her wardrobe. She appreciates a high-quality, well-made accessory. And while she loves fashion, she is probably not overtly trendy or overdone.

Your company is very dedicated to helping charity. What are your future philanthropic plans?
My goal is to produce a product line where profits would focus on benefiting charities and foundations that serve under-privileged children by giving them the resources and opportunities needed to succeed. My belief is every child should have the support, necessities and guidance to flourish.

Beyond monetary contributions, I am currently researching ways to provide opportunity and empower individuals and small business owners internationally by giving them the chance to produce this product line to benefit and strengthen their communities and lives.

How different is your life now from your life as an art director? What prompted you to make the switch?
Working in fashion is a huge change but a welcomed one! I was starting to feel stifled creatively working in advertising. When I started Amanda Joy, I had one design, a clutch I needed in my personal accessory rotation. As soon as I saw it come together, I knew I was in love with designing bags and wanted to keep going with it. Very much like in advertising and branding, it takes a couple rounds to get it right. Thankfully I was already prepared for the time and effort it takes.

What inspired you for the Fall 2011 collection? When you’re designing, where do you turn for creative vision?
For Fall, I was inspired by the classic and tailored looks you are seeing everywhere. Amanda Joy emanates unfussy design, so this season I mixed simple, clean lines with luxurious, sophisticated leathers and rich exotic skins to bring that lady-like stylishness together.

For day-to-day inspiration, you can pretty much always find me buried in a glossy or reading my daily dose of fashion blogs. Living in Florida, I spend a lot of time outside. There is ease about fashion here – maxi dresses and sandals are a girl’s best friend. And I think accessories are definitely the best way to add glamour to a simplistic look.

The 2011 Tony Awards took place at Beacon Theater in NYC last night, and we would like to congratulate all of the talented actresses, actors, writers and crew members who were nominated and took home Broadway’s most prestigious award. Not only are the performances wonderful in all the winning musicals, but the costumes are also at the top of our list. We took three winning musicals – Catch Me If You Can, The Book of Mormon and Anything Goes – and discussed why the costumes make the productions that much better.

The costumes: The suits and dresses below the knees speak volumes – modesty is the best policy. Only your Sunday best will do for the Lord, so men must wear a white shirt and tie while women don the finest humble cotton dresses.

We love all of the arts here at FashionIndie, so obviously this has been an exciting week with the Tribeca Film Festival going on in NYC. We’ve been running around town, finding the best places for celeb sitings and taking a peek at what’s in their gift bags. With only two days of the festival left, check out our guide below on where to eat, the best places to party and how to relax after a full day of films.

Where to eat: We have spotted celebs at quite a few places this week, but some restaurants stand out as hot spots for Tribeca Film Festival goers. If you’re in the mood for seafood tonight, you’ll probably spot some famous faces at Blue Water Grill or Ocean Grill. If jalapeno margaritas and table-side guacamole is more your style, Dos Caminos is always a good bet. But if you have hearty meat on the brain, Wildwood BBQ and Primehouse are also festival favorites.

What to drink: Booze, obviously, but what kind and where? Mixologist and author of The Cocktail Primer Eben Klemm created three signature cocktails for the star-studded after parties going down during the fest. At The Bunker Club, grab a “Revenge of the Electric Car” – Stoli Vanilla, Lime, Cassis, Ginger Beer – for a strong but refreshing cocktail to unwind from all that film watching. If a warm spring weather has you in the mood for something fruity, head to 675 Bar for a “Angels Crest” – Stoli Raspberry Infused with Rhubarb and Strawberry with Moscato d’Asti – or “Detachment” – Stoli Orange, Solerno, Grapefruit, Apero.

INTERVIEW: Colette Malouf, Inspired by Family, History & NYC

Colette Malouf is a lifetime New Yorker. Born, raised and currently creating in SoHo, she has been surrounded by the energy of emerging artists, both in her neighborhood and family, her entire life. There was never a shortage of elegance or grace in Colette’s home, and we are lucky to have that sophistication translated into her gorgeous hair accessories and costume jewelry. I met Colette in her beloved neighborhood for lunch, and she painted beautiful narratives of shopping with her father, Sundays at her grandmother’s and what she would wear to a cabaret in 1920.

You grew up in creative New York neighborhood SoHo in the company of artists and in the midst of your family’s loungewear business, Perfect Negligee. What influences from your background, both culturally and business-wise, do you interpret for your own line?
My grandfather left Lebanon in 1920 and started Perfect Negligee based on the caftan. My great-grandfather was cultivating mulberry trees for silk worms, so there has also been a history of textiles and silk in my family.

I grew up with Canal Street in my backyard and spent time rummaging through the odds and ends I found there. I was seeing the emerging scene in the East Village and SoHo, and loved it because I’m a creative person. There is always a refined angle to my designs because you can’t take elegant out of my DNA. I grew up in velvet robes with lace collars. Sunday at my grandmother’s was layers of china, crystal and silver. My family was extremely formal and my father very dapper. He never wore jeans. I remember going shopping with him and I would be like “look daddy this is so cute” and he would say “no honey look at the poor stitching.” I couldn’t buy anything that was bad quality.

So you spent a lot of time in your grandmother’s attic and exploring the treasures of Canal Street. Do you have any favorite pieces that continue to inspire you?
Oh yes, I have a lot of those things. I saved all the leather suitcases and lots of jeweled shoes. I have this bronze statue of a 1920s girl arched back holding a dish. I saved perfume bottles from the 20s that belonged to my grandmother. I discovered these Elizabethan-looking velvet sleeves adorned with white mink and tubes of black velvet. I was saving everything as soon as I got my paws in the drawers, and those objects continually inspire me.

I found this really cool chain on Canal Street once. It’s an intricately designed, cast leaf texture on figure-eight shaped link. I found out it’s a chandelier chain because I recently saw it on the Bowery in a store going out of business. I loved all the little trinkets I would find on Canal.

Your father always made you pay attention to the quality of a garment, and your customer is looking for this same type of elegance. What do you do to make sure your product stays consistent with these expectations?
It all starts from the beginning. When I decide to work with a material and a factory, I have to be able to trust the quality. If I think the material is too fragile, I decide not to work with it, even if I love it. We ship internationally and a material must withstand production, handling and wear. There are things I can’t do because I know the quality will disappoint my customer.

Do you ever find you are inspired to create around a fabric rather than starting with the design itself first?
I look at many aspects when I approach design. I look at all materials to see what I like and then figure out what to do with them. I look at the attributes and obstacles to working with them. What are the confinements and what are the opportunities? Then I look at all of the manufacturing possibilities. Some pieces require handwork, and others are made with machinery. I take everything into consideration before settling on a final design.

What can the Colette Malouf lady not leave the house without? Who is your customer, and what is she like?
She is highly educated, likes to travel and try new things. She has a very strong sense of integrity. Before buying something, she carefully decides if she identifies with its quality or originality. She’s curious and a culture seeker. She goes to the theater and listens to music – she’s so interested in life. She shops in the most expensive stores, but also goes antiquing and likes to find unusual things to mix with her collection of modern pieces. Something old, something new, always elegant in her motto.

You occasionally lecture students at Parsons about design and the fashion industry. What do you tell young designers in the industry about starting a business? What can you learn from these students?
I tell young designers to think about what it means to have your own company because it’s a huge sacrifice to have all that responsibility early in life. I can’t even count how many times I couldn’t attend Sunday brunch or go on vacation. Owning a business isn’t for some but inevitable for others. I couldn’t work for anybody else because I needed to express this strong vision I have. My life is dedicated to my vision, and I’m sure you’ll hear the same story from many designers.

I look to young people in the industry as a checkpoint. I ask myself if I’m getting too serious or too safe. I try to listen to my assistant because even if I can foresee obstacles with certain designs, it’s good to be open to others’ opinions.

Do things like nature, architecture or other designers inspire you? What really speaks to you?
For a long time, I was really nature and object-inspired. But now I’m much more passionate about being experientially-inspired. I feel a piece can be inspired by one single element, but it doesn’t work that way for the collection as a whole. A recent trip to Turkey heavily inspired me, as do the 1920s. I think about what I would wear sitting in a cabaret in 1920 and bring the customer into a narrative. It’s the storytelling that I really enjoy and find inspiring.

Sometimes its hard to remember why I get into something, but seeing a picture, texture or material can start to spark my inspiration. I have all these impressions of life stored in my memory bank that I build upon and turn into a story.

In New York City, or any big city for that matter, it is impractical to drive a car around every day. Congratulations, you are being green by default! But even in cities where the public transportation isn’t quite as convenient, ditching your car during Earth Month is an eco-friendly alternative to getting around. If you’re reluctant to get on the bus or subway because you’re afraid of everyone’s nasty germs floating around, not to fear. FashionIndie is going to tell you how to stylishly stay disease-free on public transportation so both you and the Earth can breathe a sigh of relief.

1. Wear a jazzy surgical mask. Remember when swine flu was all the rage? Everywhere you looked, someone(s) was wearing a surgical mask. These are ugly and sterile, no pun intended. Spice up your look while protecting your immune system with gemstones, colorful patterns or even a different mouth. Samira Boon created her masks because she was tired of seeing the the dreary white variety everywhere. You can be a tiger, gorilla or zipped-lip by snagging one at the Hara Museum Online Shop. Elizabeth Hurley & Glenda Bailey Honor Fabulous Women of Every Age

Harper’s Bazaar appreciates the beauty and grace present in women of all ages and knows amazing style is timeless. Last night, the fabulous publication hosted an event with Estée Lauder spokesmodel Elizabeth Hurley and Harper’s Bazaar editor-in-chief Glenda Bailey to toast the finalists and name the grand prize winner of their second “Fabulous at Every Age” contest. Lookbooks and FashionIndie editor-in-chief Samantha Lim and I ventured up to the event at the Hearst Tower to see all of these fantastic women in person.

“Women who are fabulous at every age show a genuine spirit for life and are passionate about their personal style,” said Harper’s Bazaar editor-in-chief Glenda Bailey. “These women know that fashion and style have everything to do with confidence and nothing to do with the number of birthdays they’ve celebrated.”

We here at FashionIndie could not agree more! There were five finalists, one each in their 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s and 60s. They each receive a $5,000 cash prize and gifts from Estée Lauder, with the grand prize winner awarded an additional $5,000. And the grand prize went to….

Brandyn Barbara Artis! She is in her 60s, always effortlessly chic and fabulous. “Brandyn has been a wife, mother, grandmother, breast cancer survivor, lobbyist/cancer awareness advocate, playwright, actress, US air force veteran, all with grace and elegance,” says her friend who nominated her.

All of the contestants were gorgeous, and obviously Sam and I were drooling over how hot Elizabeth Hurley is in person.
