Go Barefoot Today for TOMS One Day Without Shoes

All over the world, people are marching… barefoot. With a TOMS One Day Without Shoes walk earlier this morning in NY’s Tompkins Square Park, over 500 supporters rallying in the Philippines, and more joining up all day across the world, this earth is taking a note: There are far too many people barefoot right now. And that is absolutely right.

Millions of children suffer from life without shoes, and most of those kids have to walk long distances to school in, say, chemically mutated soil. This leads to all sorts of foot diseases that are actually completely preventable just with the use of shoes. Thus, TOMS shoes gives a pair of shoes to a child in need for every pair they sell. One for one. You’re going barefoot today so that people ask you why, and you can tell them all of this. (Cheat sheet ahead!)

Let it be known that Moncler Grenoble completely shut it down at its Fall/Winter 2012-13 presentation Sunday night. Show attendees walked down the sloping hill to Wollman Rink in Central Park where hot rum ciders and roasted chestnuts awaited us before the show began. The rink, surround by trees set aglow by brilliantly colored lights, soon filled with the sights of figure skaters and sounds of The Harlem Boys Choir belting out Frank Sinatra’s New York, New York, all dressed in Moncler. The numbers that followed were truly spectacular, and you can watch them all right here.

Interview with Hot Designer David Lerner

David Lerner is made in New York City, everything from the man to the clothing. And the designer is as stunning as the clothing itself. His philosophy is to make women feel confident and sexy whether she’s at work or working out, pregnant or on the prowl. He’s got the New York color palette and boho vibes, and fuses a 1920s inspiration to his work, as that is the time when women became so empowered in the modern world. We picked his brain about design and his company.

Who is the David Lerner woman? Is she real or theoretical?

She’s a woman who is confident and therefore sexy. She’s a woman who is well traveled, smart and caring. A woman who likes to have fun, who is serious but not too serious. The David Lerner woman is someone who has her own style, she’s a woman who sets trends and has an appreciation for the highest quality fabrics that we use.

Your basics are also super fashion forward. Where do you get your inspiration & design details? Do you pay attention to trends?

I get inspiration everywhere, it can come from music, art, cities, people and even television shows. My Fall 2011 collection was inspired by Boardwalk Empire, and the 1920’s prohibition era. At David Lerner we strive set trends, not adhere to any existing ones.

What’s the first thing you think about when designing a new piece?

I think of the David Lerner woman, and if that piece will instill more confidence in her.

What’s your personal style like? Favorite brands? Go-to outfit?

My personal style is business, but casual. I always wear brands that recognize that less is more when it comes to fashion. My go-to brand is Rag and Bone, and in terms of outfit, a pair of jeans and a button-down.

What do you do in your spare time (hobbies, passions, down time)?

In my spare time, I play with my 10 month bulldog Mashuganna. I watch Homeland on Showtime, but my favorite thing to do is spend time with my family.

Do you have any New Years resolutions?

Go to the gym.

What are we going to see from David Lerner in the near future?

We are going through a huge expansion as we prepare to show Fall 2012. The line will become a full collection finally. We have introduced new fabrics and moved into new categories of clothing. We just took new offices and showroom in the Meatpacking District and brought our sales in-house. In the near future, I hope there will be David Lerner retail stores in both New York City and Los Angeles.

You’ve had a lot of success in a short amount of time — 2008 is really not that long ago! What’s the best business advice you’ve gotten along the way?

The best business advice I have gotten is to never take the last dollar off the table. The relationship is always more important than a little bit of extra money.

Right before everyone jetted off for the Thanksgiving holiday, we witnessed a grand act in charity by the young people of New York City. The second annual WishNYC: A Toast To Wishes event raised $175,000 (that’s a LOT of wishes) with the help of over 500 of Manhattan’s finest 20-and-30-somethings at hotspot LAVO rocking out to 4AM’s DJ Theory. Now I’ve been to my fair share of uppity Manhattan fundraisers and this is by far the most fun event of the benefit season. The key? It is run by an amazing group of 25 young people who are all uber passionate about helping this cause. The event itself is the brainchild of friends that wanted to put their social lives to good use, and in two short years they have managed to pull in over $200,000 in proceeds for the Make A Wish Foundation. What made this different from any other charity event? This group has concocted the perfect recipe for a killer bash:

Full Color Spectrum of Spring Fashion Week

Amongst the bevy of busy prints that has shaped this fashion week, we’ve noticed how equally represented Roy G. Biv has been. These shades, however, are unique to now, with a sense of vibrancy. According to designers in the Big 4: New York, London, Milan and Paris, it’s going to be a colorful Spring. Taste the rainbow.

The red of next spring is primarily bold. Think fire trucks and Louboutin soles.

In contrast to this past spring's tangerine, this orange has gone pumpkin, with reddish bronze undertones.

Just shy of neon, this near-blinder shows hints of marigold. It's vibrant and saturated, ready to tackle any busy print in a fight for loudness.

Green is feeling minty fresh. The pastel finish is crisp and clean.

True blue is blowing up cobalt. There's a great depth in this striking color.

Baby got back to the hue of blue that kisses the sky through a layer of mist.

Lavender sweeps in with an essence of calm. The color is regal, light as a princess (not nearly as light at Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge - skinny bid).

Fashion Week How To Guide: Writing A Runway Review

Mercedes Benz Fashion Week is upon us and the number of fashion websites and blogs present in New York City has officially burst the stratosphere. Knowing what to look for in a runway show can be quite different than what most bloggers normally write about, so we’ve bring you our handy how-to guide to reporting on a fashion show. Click through for the 5 main things to look for when assessing a runway show, then have fun hitting the Tents!

Inspiration: As an editor, it is your job to go beyond describing the clothes. You need to talk about a designer’s inspiration and the message that they are trying to convey. Ask yourself questions like: what is the designer trying to say? Who is this collection speaking to? and What is this collection saying about the world? (Helpful hint: the designer’s inspirational story and background is typically provided in the program or you can get a quote from their PR representative).

5 NY Designers that Rouse Fashion Week Buzz

July certainly isn’t too soon to be getting wildly excited for Fashion Week, frankly neither is March. That said, there are certain shows that get my panties in a twist for New York Fashion Week. The kind that surprise, the kind that never disappoint, the kind I’ll never miss again. They are shows I reminisce. See the five designers that are making me crave a that glamorous week right now.

PRABAL GURUNG

The color blocking intricacies and power shapes make me ever kick myself for missing his debut in The Tents for Fall 2010. But it was his ability to unravel that structure for this season that makes me even more excited for what’s next.

A Brief History of Gurung: After studying fashion and working in production and design India, he designed under the tutelage of Manish Arora and Cynthia Rowley. He then left his position as Design Director for Bill Blass to start his own label, which launched in February 2009.

April Showers brought May’s Random Week of Rain. And now we must deal. In thinking about shoes to equip you for the water in the street, there are a few ways to go about it. With a rain boot, you’re covered shin to toe. No chance of water getting in, and also no chance of you getting into any cool bars after work. That’s why a patent leather flatform might just be a rain CHECK.

Walk through puddles like it’s nothing in your Roger Clergerie lifts. They’re patent leather, so they’ll hold up against the elements. And it’s relatively warm out now in NY, your feet will be fine getting a little wet. Clergerie soles his shoes sturdy with good rubber traction so you won’t be slipping around. At A. Turen, everything is made with care. That’s just the nature of the designers Ashley Turen keeps in the store. Her hand painted pieces hold their ground next to select designers and and wild accessories. The painting is abstract, meant to give each garment it’s own pattern. How did Ashley get into painting? “I have loved painting since I was about 7 years old. It was only about three years ago that I changed my medium from painting on canvases to clothing. The same technique applies.” See it here.

Look Four: Universal Cutout

The Peekaboo Dress: Timo Weiland, $320

This look began with this thick, smooth stretch dress that toys with the body and the eye. It checks at the bust at the fiber level, essentially building in the bra. And the strip in the middle is sheered black. Timo and design partner Alan Eckstein always make it interesting and know how to get ahead young.

The Universally Painted Dress: A. Turen

Tight, long sleeve and cut classily short, the under layer is actually a dress. It’s hand painted by Ashley Turen to me looks like the far reaches of space.

The Bitchin’ Jacket: A. Turen, $850

Painted by hand and studded at the shoulders, this bomber is bitchin’. That might be the only adjective for this jacket. I felt lie a rock star in it.

The Mesh Ring: Laura B Collection Particuliére, $154

I chose this ring because its multi-tonal woven metal meshed with that of the hand painted effect. It has metal beads tied into it as it sits thick on the hand. I told you about Laura Bortolami’s high fashion history, but now you can find her luscious chain mail in boutiques across the globe.

Alongside brands like Timo Weiland, Martin Margiela and other emerging talents, storeowner Ashley Turen carries her own collection of hand painted pieces. Here’s where balls of steel come in to play: she hand paints vintage Chanel bags and coveted concert tees (see them here this week). LOOK ONE: Crop It Tall

The Painted Shorts: A. Turen, $168

The look began with the jean shorts, hand painted by Ashley Turen. Tattered to exposed-pocket summertime delight, these completely original mid-waisted metallic daisy dukes spoke to me.

The Nude Leather Tank: Maggie Ward, $282

I chose this top for its stability and flounce; the cropped A-line is perfect with a short and tight high waist. Plus, the leather is like cream. Maggie Ward was founded by Three Dots co-founder John Ward with the vision to make comfortable clothing that doesn’t appear comfortable. Tricky, tricky, and totally working.

The Softest Cropped Cardi: KristenseN du Nord, $239

This piece immediately warranted a home in the Boutique Critique. The combination of fabrics so delicate on a shape that embraces the moment makes for a must-have. Since the brand’s inception in 1996, they have worked exclusively with carefully selected Italian craftsmen and the finest materials. They use a method they call “wash-wash” to ensure zero shrinkage.

The Turban-Tied Scarf: Juma, $176

Amidst the wall of brilliantly patterned scarves, this one jumped out in its regality. With the image of a peacock surrounded by its painterly feathers, it just begged to be wrapped around my head until it became a fabric beehive. Brother and sister duo Alia and Jamil Juma forged these scarves and the rest of their collections from the influence of travel and art.

The Memories Necklace: Venessa Arizaga, $325

Off this chain hangs little bits of reminders of the trinkets you’ve encountered throughout your life and childhood. Each piece of jewelry is different; these pieces are gathered by Vanessa Arizaga through her copious travels. Before she took the dive into her own jewelry business, she was deep in the design world working under Tuleh, Carolina Herrera and Zac Posen. This is jewelry with a sense of humor and a background of elegance.

The Sneaks: Ash, $130

Properly faded and bleached, this pair makes one chill summer sneaker. The design pair Leonello Calvani and Patrick Ithier share a history in French luxury and create fine shoes that hit abreast of the trend – they strive to cater to those who seek out fashion in the most thrilling cities in the world.

The Chain Mail Pouch: Laura B Collection Particulière, $760

Made of metal mesh that moves like water, this pouch slouches so elegantly at the side. It has an alternative handle to carry on the wrist as well. Versatile and a little bit see through, I’m rather in love. This bag came to Laura Bortolami in a dream, whilst sleeping in Morocco; a glimmer on mesh. And so she did. Before she did any of this, she worked in her native city of Rome for Armani, Gianni Versace, Dolce & Gabbana and more until she dedicated herself fully to her jewelry venture in 1999.

Are You A Young Designer In Need of $40,000?

Last night FashionIndie helped celebrate the debut of the Dorchester Collection Fashion Prize, a $40,000 endowment to help young designers establish their brand. The winning designer also gets an expenses paid presentation during Paris Fashion Week at the Plaza Athenee. (Get on it young designers, there are only a few weeks left to apply!)

Held at New York’s Palace Hotel, we channeled out inner Chuck Bass and mingled in the Madison Room sipping on Belvedere “Thomas Tait” concoctions and the fanciest version of a breakfast sandwich I’ve ever seen (tapioca bacon balls with whipped egg and crunchy toast crumbs).

Last year’s winner Thomas Tait stood proudly by one of his stunningly sculptured pieces for Fall/Winter 2011. Tait is now also a design consultant for one of the Dorchester Collection hotel’s newest locations.

The competition judges were whisked to the hotel in breathtaking Rolls-Royce Phantoms (ahem, Rolls Royce, feel free to send some love our way), where they mingled with last year’s winner and shared excitement for what type of talent was yet to come. The panel includes: Giovana Battaglia, Derek Blasberg, Shala Monroque (photo above) Thom Browne, Francisco Costa, Lauren Santo Domingo, and Elizabeth Saltzman.

Fashion Police: NYC Anti Counterfeit Bill will Arrest You for Buying Fake

The devil doesn’t wear Prada. The devil wears fake Prada. Counterfeiting in the fashion industry accounts for over $250 billion in losses for businesses, not to mention drug trafficking, terrorism and the most despicable labor conditions on the planet. Harper’s Bazaar and the City of New York are both taking action against this heinous smirch on fashion.

While Harper’s Bazaar tackled the online counterfeit debacle at their recent Anti-Counterfeiting Summit, New York is getting all sorts of serious about the topic of fakes. New York City council member Margaret Chin is championing a bill that would criminalize the purchase of fake trademarked items. In layman’s terms: Buy a fake bag, go to jail.

“The bill targets those people who purchase goods that they know are counterfeit,” says Chin.

Fake bag street vendors line Canal Street and crawl through Soho and Chinatown, making it at once a destination and a trap for tourists, and are a serious nuisance to those who live there. They cost NYC over $1 billion in tax revenue and all for what? To make you look tacky, that’s what.

Counterfeit is Ugly

This past Tuesday, top editors, PR firms, designers, and guests of honor from the Mayors office gathered under one collective roof at the Harper’s Bazaar 7th annual Anti-Counterfeit Summit. While dining on delicacies like truffle risotto balls, a panel of experts spoke about the dangers and harms of counterfeit goods. Frank Abagnale, one of the world’s most respected authorities on the subject (seeing that he lived the part which was interpreted in the hit book, movie, and now Broadway show Catch Me If You Can), Susan Engel, CE of Portero Luxury, an internet retailer of luxury goods, and Thomas Onda the chief of intellectual property at Levi’s were all on the panel to educate us on how the counterfeit industry funds terrorism, child labor malpractice, and fuels the drug industry. Judging by the surprised and horrified looks on everyone’s faces, counterfeit goods seem to be a battle that can mostly be won through mere awareness and education.

What can you do? Instead of buying fake, get a bag that no one has ever seen. Find one in a local store, go vintage, go to the biggies like Urban Outfitters or Zara, or save up for the real deal!

Now you’ve been warned: Do not pass go, do not collect a Gucci bag for 30 dollars. Chances are, you’ll go directly to jail.

Boutique Critique:: Ava Maria: Look 4

Buckling under the weight of such beautiful objects, and body falling into a standing broken-down doll, this outfit may take you down the rabbit hole. This outfit is seeped in French history; several pieces have a long lineage in Paris. Sought out by store owner Katherine Virketiene, she’s brought into Ava Maria pour toi.

Look Four: AvaMaria in Wonderland

The Oil Slicker Saddle Heels: Repetto, $250

It started with the Repetto; this time, oil slicked. In the most beautiful way, it looks like a dirty puddle. It was love at first glance. Repetto is famous for ballet shoes, and construct gorgeous others for we non-professional-dancing folk.

The Mini Checker Shirtdress: Cacharel, $178

Ah the shirtdress, blue and gold checked, enhances the hidden hues of the Repettos. So dainty on its own, so innocent, yet vibrant as well. Cacharel took off in the 1960s with its iconic shirtdresses designed by Jean Bousquet. Following in the traditional footprints, they are still prevalent today.

The Kitty Silk Top: Paul & Joe Sister, $228

A shirtdress is a shirtdress, and I couldn’t wear just a shirtdress. I was jazzed to find this complementing silk top that slid underneath the open top so smoothly. The blues dance together and the checks on cats patterns don’t protest too much. Famed French menswear designer Sophie Albou started Paul & Joe in 1995 and branched into les femmes in 2006 with the little Sister.

The Waving Belt: Linea Pelle, $188

The gingham and the shirt came alive together, but the look was still lacking something. Linea Pelle belt corsetry filled that void. With the ends fastened at the back, the shaping quality of waving leather strips brought more shape to the silhouette.

The Flowering Rings: Marie-Lise Lachapelle, gold-plated leaf, $350, silver orchid $375

The silver and golden leafy rings flourished on one hand, enhancing the dual tonal quality of the entire look. Marie-Lise Lachapelle constructs these structures by making molds from actual orchids and leaves. That’s why the metal has so much wildlife in it.

The modern power suit gets a lift at AvaMaria. Here stands a summer office outfit, turban and all. Store owner Katherine Virketiene is an expert on taking a look from evening out dancing to professional, and vice versa, because she was a professional ballroom dancer for so many years, and made costumes for Dancing with the Stars. Here is Boutique Critique’s most professional look yet.

The Skirt: Myth & Ritual, $178

My mind scarcely runs to any sort of “business wear”, but this skirt seemed more versatile than that. Though it would feel at home in the office, try it at a picnic.Peer at the careful detailing on the pockets and waistband. Blue velvet panels do more for a garment than you might think.

The Lace Shouldered Tank: Vanessa Bruno, $178

A little lace lining at the sleeve cap gives this slightly slouchy tank an edge. The sides have a different textured gusset and add dimension. Alone it would have been just enough for a late spring after work drink. Danish born, Paris based Vanessa Bruno creates unexpected shapes with cutouts and wrapping straps while mixing patterns and textures with a deft hand.

The Cropped Lady Sport Jacket: Lover, $450

This jacket kicked the power up a notch. The bold shoulders add a touch of welcomed severity, while the above-the-elbow sleeve and short cut keep it fresh. Started in 2001 by two Australian Lovers Susien Chong and Nic Briand, they have taken their creations of romantic, ethereal, loud and irreverent designs from a market stall all the way to Vogue and into the hearts of celebs and It girls like Keira Knightly and Alexa Chung.

The Blue Suede Shoe: Repetto, $250

This heeled and ever so slightly platformed lace up jazz shoe seemed the ideal fit for this work and play ready look. Rose Repetto began making ballet shoes in 1947 for her son – real ballerina’s point shoes. That has been the backbone of the company, revered by professional and amateur dancers alike, but she expanded to all kinds of shoes to make Repetto a part of every day life. “Like dance, our designs take skill and knowhow.” Expect a seriously well-worked shoe from Repetto. Perhaps AvaMaria owner Virketiene knows of Repetto from her ballroom dancing history.

The Ombré Turban: Cashmere, $80

No brand in particular, gradient blue cashmere scarf has been reworked into a turban for this particular look. It gives the office aesthetic both a more playful and more intimidating edge simultaneously. Learn how to tie a turban like this in a minute.

The Delicate Cuff: Nagicia, $248

Part of the butterfly collection by Tricia Kim, this skeletal cuff is barely there but vibrant at once. She chooses her materials. When she uses gemstones, they are hand-made with love in Bali. Kim feels that she is the loving intermediary of beauty.

The Home Sweet Home Ring: J. Davis Studio, $138

Brooklyn based silversmith Jill Davis takes her jewelry home with miniscule house imagery. On this ring, the homes are sitting within a circle, perhaps of trust. Outfit complete.

FASHION SCRAMBLE: Decarnin Says Bye Bye to Balmain + Westwood Does Not

- After five lucrative, statement-shouldered years, Balmain and creative director Christophe Decarnin are getting a divorce. What will happen to the sequined jackets?! No one ever thinks about the sequined jackets! Decarnin was notoriously absent from the Fall 2011 show in Paris under speculation of a mental break, but sources say the designer and Balmain’s chairman/CEO Alain Hivelin just didn’t see eye to eye. An internal hire is expected to be announced shortly. [WWD]

- Vivienne Westwood is opening up her first flagship store in the states and she’s doing it in Los Angeles. Why L.A.? ”I don’t actually like New York.” She explains. “New York people are a bit stuck up and self important, and think that just the fact that they live in New York makes them better than anybody else.” Not better than anybody else. Better than everybody else. So-what? Who-cares? Is it our fault our city kicks every other city’s ass? I don’t think so. Please don’t punish us for being the bestest, Viv. [W]

- As if there weren’t enough fashion reality shows hosted by supermodels, now NBC has thrown their chapeau into the ring with Fashion Star, hosted by Elle Macpherson. But don’t expect high concept challenges requiring yards of tulle and a metric ton of beading; this show will focus on everyday items, “like bathing suits or lingerie, or surf wear and jeans.” And the winner gets a multi-million dollar contract and the chance to have their line sold at a “massive retail store.” I don’t know about you, but I’ve all but given up on PJ Runway (Lifetime? Ew.) and The Fashion Show, despite Iman being the best person ever, just doesn’t make the cut. Will a show about designers making mass-retail jeans intrigue you? Especially on NBC? [Modelina]

Boutique Critique:: Court: Look 1

Boutique Critique was taken to Court. I can’t get into the specifics of the arrest, but I will fiercely deny any allegations that it involved Rebecca Black and a finely sharpened object last Friday… Well, the trial ensues upon the lacquered black floor of the Court room, with a film noir NY color palette and western-leaning-California vibes; highly suspect if you ask me. Reimagined t-shirts of many weights and structures intersperse silken black dresses, leathers, sweaters and the occasional floor length chiffon. Though the case appeared to be rather black and white, shades of gray and few jumping hues peeked through as evidence of the brighter buying choices. The jury has been out for the whole week, and they want more proof. Over the course of this week, come sit in on the trial, and help us reach a final verdict.

Look One: Shredded ‘n’ Leather

The Long Tube Skirt: Mary Meyer, $94

California native cum NY transplant Mary Meyer fuses her talent for art into clothing that makes sense. Most notable for her geo-graphics and dyeing, she also has some revolutionary ideas about garment making. The construction of the skirt is what inspires me: she’s purposefully left the knit hemline unfinished so that the wearer may cut it to the desired length, no tailor required. The ground grazing-option takes effect when you place the waistline at any height. Named the AJM Skirt for Andrew J. Mukamal of Kell On Earth assistantship, Meyer was inspired by his grunge gone goth glam; long soft layers that counterpose plaid and leather.

The Shredded Top: Evil Twin, $89

“A physical copy of one’s self whom has altered morality” is the definition of this Australian brand’s namesake. I gather that this Evil Twin‘s twin shirt would not have holes, nor spaced fringe, nor a marble tie dye, all of which sneakily camouflage my exposed skin. With the skirt up high resting just below the bosom, I only have need for a bust long top. This holy top was born to move and shake, so if scandal isn’t your thing, throw a hot bandeau underneath as a bra, and let the hue show through. Lest you end up locked up for indecent exposure.

The Leather Jacket: Kill City, $458

With a slouch squared collar and super long sleeve lining, the relaxed rocker jacket is the ideal weight for Spring’s transition. Based in LA, Kill City is forged in that flexible weather to the sound of the rockin’ punk wail of Iggy Pop.

The Side-Laced Wedge: Madison Harding, $185 (originally $265)

Created intently for the downtown pavement pounder, these suede wedge booties ground the outfit’s transitional effect. Hilary Rosenman of Madison Ave., N.Y. and Barri Budin of Harding Dr., N.J. hauled their fashion knowledge to the East Village and began making astutely designed Madison Harding shoes.

The Hair Corset: Court, $48

Their very own hair corset comes from the Native American tradition of hair tying. They lace up like the top of a riding boot and encapsulate the pony tail. More details on this piece in the coming looks.

All week you’ve seen the debut of this new column, Boutique Critique, and today brings our first shop Début to the final outfit. This look has a whole lot of that green buzzword about it: Sustainability. Storeowner Lisa Weiss runs her store to be socially and environmentally conscious with the small batch runs of new lines alongside handmade jewelry. Reaching even deeper, Début features several designers who take more radical steps to be sustainable. Such as Christopher Raeburn who takes the philosophy of repurposing to warrior status, and Monisha Raja who brings a whole new meaning to outsourcing with her line Love Is Mighty. Read ahead to see the most eco-loving look yet. And a dash of of pattern mashing.

LOOK FIVE: Sustainable Pattern Mashup

The Parachute Hoodie: Christopher Raeburn, $462

Christopher Raeburn caught my attention with his collection in London for next fall. He takes discarded military material and repurposes them as slickers and other articles of clothing. Like this jacket for instance, that is made from 100% Parachute Nylon. I had been eyeing a different holy jacket down, as it was featured in its own front display, but I didn’t end up putting it with my chosen looks. That piece would suffice to live independently of an outfit; a true outer layer fit to engulf any look. This neon piece, however, seemed more the challenge: I was after some good pattern mixin’.

The Tank: Timo Weiland, $320

To suit my pattern mashing desires, Timo Weiland jumped to me once more. The sheer red-orange organic shapes that formulate on this tank completely complement the wild dotting of the jacket. But what’s on the back of the shirt, you ask? Why it’s the same tree landscape we saw on the dress in the previous look.

The Skirt: Lisa Marie Fernandez, $224

You might have sensed my affinity for neoprene at this point. Lisa Marie Fernandez shapes up a lovely little black skirt, beach- and bar-friendly.Though, I must admit, if there were to have been a brightly patterned bottom that meshed, I would have Man-Repellered it up.

The Necklace: Orly Genger, $395

This rope conglomeration collar hung from a single nail in the Orly Genger nook, and eyed me down the entire two hours I was in Début. Each mountain climbers rope speckled with neon, hand-tied knots wrapping concentrically around thick straight ones, clung together.

The Sandals: Love Is Mighty, $175

My vision for this outfit was sandals. Monisha Raja‘s vision for these sandals was environmental and social sustainability. Employing artisans from indigenous tribes across the globe, she uses traditional arts and crafts techniques and completely animal friendly materials to produce beaded sandals and bags. Style Adventure with The Heavy Pets

Meet The Heavy Pets. They’re a prolific funk-fused jazz-tinged and intellectually driven jam band that tours the country, making fans like me dance like wild to their heavy jams and visual feast of lights. They are staples in the lineups at monstrous festivals like Bonnaroo, Langerado, moe.down, Gathering of the Vibes, and my personal fave All Good. They’re seen by many hundreds of thousands fans across the United States. They’ve recorded with Grammy winning producers and renowned musicians. They’re talented and musically sexy. The singular drawback I find in them, and in many bands that surround the jam genre, is that they dress like…well…boys. The goal is to trim some of the immaturity off of their look, and bring them style-wise into the bold maturing and experimental sound of their music. Today I’m going on a styling adventure with lead singer Jeff Lloyd to help The Heavy Pets to dress like they sound for their concert this Friday, March 18th at The Brooklyn Bowl.

Début is the kind of shop where some jewelry hangs on hangers. Designers are making such radically new creations that owner Lisa Weiss must often come up with creative ways to display them. Those displays are ever changing because the average length of time she carries one designer is about three seasons. In order to maintain her store’s philosophy, she cannot get too loyal to one designer. She must live by the essence of if you love it, let it go… What comes back is the success the designers see upon graduating from Début, knowing where they kicked it all off.

LOOK THREE: Abstract Python Warrior

The Shoulder Piece: Fannie Schiavoni, $825

This look began with my love of the chain mail shoulder piece. The metal mesh moves like water in my hand and makes me feel invincible when strapped around my body. Its creator Fannie Schiavoni hand makes each piece in her studion in London, and keeps the color of her materials muted so that she can focus purely on the shape and clean lines. She has named this collection “Lucy in the Sky”, evoking a psychedelic yet other worldly feeling.

The (non) Body Suit: Calla Paris, Leggings, $174, Tank, $98

My first instinct to match the brilliance of the shoulder scene-stealer was an abstract printed dress by Calla Paris. Calla Haynes is a Canadian-born, Paris based designer with a five-year training history with Olivier Theyskens and a serious knack for tight prints. Début had the pattern in a fierce little itty bitty dress (which I spotted first). That mini thing, which being one of the only pieces left over from Fall 2010, did not come in my size, and thus did not even contain half of one of my boob. But I needed an outfit to form the foundation of that glorious shoulder piece. So it occurred to me to try the olive printed stirrup tights with the matching tank. Alone and together I was in love. The leggings have a nearly 3-inch sturdy black elastic waistband that hugs and sucks in as the tank tucks in to form a bodysuit.

The Skirt: Whit, $225

A bodysuit is so right for so many reasons. However, it didn’t feel 100% right at the moment; there had to be another layer, if not to cover more stunning items in Début, then to cover some of my winter weight… With that came this military green scoop pocket skirt by Whit, a line launched by Phoenix native Whitney Pozgay. With a studio Brooklyn and experience with Kate Spade, Three Asfour and Steven Alan, she has created a line founded in imagery as diverse as Keith Haring and ice pops.

And for 30 minutes before the show, they’re taking us into the wild unknown backstage. Oo there ain’t no other way.

Seems a brisk fishnet no-heeled-platform stroll is just what Mother Moster needs to warmup for a sold out Madison Square Garden.

This is not a joke, New York. Prepare, for we are getting inches, no, feet! of white (and soon-to-be black) precipitation, sure to snuff out sanitation service again. Arm yourselves now with the proper tools to get you through such another blizzard.

The New York Times just reviewed the newest DASH boutique in SoHo, and to no one’s surprise, think it’s mediocre at best.

Whoa Mario, Calm Down! Mario Allegedly Punches the Sound Guy at the Rochester Music Festival

Over the weekend, R&B singer Mario performed at the annual Rochester Music Festival in New York. According to a few sources, Mario snapped when his performance was cut short due to his late arrival and as a result Mario allegedly punched and/or shoved the sound guy prior to performing his hit song “Break Up.” Others claim that Mario did not arrive late, and only pushed the sound guy because he felt disrespected. While Mario hasn’t confirmed or denied the claims directly, he posted this on his Twitter page: “I can’t explain, somethings just happen on they own…” So what do you think really happened?

NYC: Christian Louboutin Doesn’t Want You To Buy His Shoes

The latest news from the Christian Louboutin sample sale is that shoppers are being turned away from the door. Yesterday was the editors preview, today the general public is supposed to get access but those without an RSVP aren’t being let in. Some woman who spent nearly 3 hours in line wasn’t allowed access. Now that’s a great way to treat your customers.

True fans of the brand AREN’T BEING LET IN!!! Not the best way to treat dedicated lovers of the brand, Christian, definitely not the way to gain friends either.

Racked NY was on 38th Street at 8 a.m. this morning to witness the rejections. So far this happened:

A shopper also in line says she misread her RSVP confirmation and came yesterday instead of her confirmed date, today. She waited for three hours and when she was at the front of the line, staffers refused to let her in. So she’s back today. A staffer is warning everyone that if they’re not on the list, they shouldn’t both[er] waiting in line. A “forward from a friend” doesn’t count. A girl yelled out “Is Alex upstairs?” Her attempt at name-dropping was ignored.

Girls, let it go. They’re just shoes and most aren’t that great anyway, so let’s all move on and skip this sale. It isn’t worth the embarrassment.

Becks and Annabelle hit up the Victoria Secret store in Soho this afternoon to meet some of the bombshells. The Valentine’s day themed event offered a perfect photo op for these beautiful angels. The real belle of the ball was the new fragrance Love Rocks, which was accompanied in all goody bags. The feminine sweet scent reminds me a little of raspberry sorbet which means wearing it will only make your man hungry for more. Use wisely ladies, unless you’re okay with a feeding frenzy.

Project Runway Snubs New York

Has New York lost it’s title of “Fashion Capital of the World”? Seems so, considering Project Runway’s new season, which returns to the Empire City lacks any homegrown New Yorkers.

With the past season taking place in the fashion wasteland that’s Ed Hardy hemorrhaging Los Angeles and this season lacking any of Bloomberg’s finest, I’m starting to worry about the fate of Project Runway.

Where they really unable to find any local talent? Or have local designers grown tired of the designer launching pad?

First of all, the photographer did a great job with this shot. Secondly, I love her outfit. That belt is really cool, and different from whatever you’d find at Urban Outfitters (not that I don’t like Urban Outfitters, I just praise effort). The green looks great with her hair color, and the blouse is definitely a step above a tshirt for me (that would’ve been easy).
