Former Wall Street banker Linda Pratka has opened Ilus, a boutique that offers three-night rentals for designer dresses, jewelry and handbags, at 248 Elizabeth Street. Last year she came up with the eveningwear-heavy concept for Microsoft’s IdeaWins competition and finished fourth. Pratka herself had bought numerous dresses for black-tie events with clients, friends’ weddings and Junior League gatherings that were seldom worn more than two or three times. Aside from the limited versatility factor, women in their 20s and 30s have the expense and space issues to consider.

What a great idea. Daniel and I have been talking about this for some time now. Why do women in NYC have to spend hundreds of dollars on a dress they will only wear to one event? Or spend thousands on a wedding dress that will be worn for a few hours, then spend hundreds to get it dry cleaned and preserved (not like our daughters are really going to want the dress 20 years from now). Really excited about this store, will go soon and report back. But if anyone has gone, let us know what it’s like.
