Nordstrom Jumps on the Live-Streaming Bandwagon with Jason Wu

In its first attempt at live-streaming, Nordstrom will broadcast Jas0n Wu‘s fall 2012 show on its website. Since it’s their first time, I hope Wu is gentle with the luxury department store.

The site features a convenient countdown clock to the runway show at 1 pm today as well as a rather dry Q&A with the designer. For those who have never seen a runway show, however, don’t be fooled by the disclaimer that the show will start at “1pm Eastern (10am Pacific) or shortly thereafter” — “shortly thereafter” means about a half an hour in.

When asked why Nordstrom chose Wu to break its live-streaming hymen, Executive Vice President of Designer Merchandising Jeffrey Kalinsky responded (rather defensively, I might add), “Jason makes truly exciting clothes for all different types of women of all different ages. He’s become a really strong partner for us. We’re totally behind Jason Wu, period, end of subject.”

New York City born and raised accessories designer Seville Michelle Anastos is all about having ideas and making them into a reality. “When you say you’re going to do things, just do it,” advice from Seville Michelle herself. From full-time stylist to the most requested accessories designer at Patricia Field after only having been in business for a little over two years, you can find her work in over 40 shops and online market places all over the world. Anastos’ accessories have been published in Essence magazine, Gotham magazine, Vice magazine, Glamour, Vibe, Redbook, etc. Her designs have been worn by Kreayshawn to Nicki Minaj, Today living by the Seville Michelle Anastos motto “Good Taste Must Be Shared” we present a more one on one level with Seville Michelle and details on her line.

When and how did your line begin?

I launched my accessories line in the Fall of 2010 with a concept design of epaulets. I created a small collection in different styles and they ended up in the hands of some fashion influentials. I’ve since introduced earrings, bangles and eyewear.

What inspires your work?

I watch a lot of nature documentaries. I’m in love with the beluga whale. I watch the same documentaries over and over.. I’ve seen the Blue Planet series over a hundred times and I now watch Microcosmos fanatically. Have you ever seen ladybugs make love? It’s a fascinating and a gentle experience.

Where do you finding the amazing leathers and animal skins that you use on your accessories?

I buy my leather at the same place that Helmut Lang, Diane Von Furstenberg and Oscar De La Renta buy from. Its expensive and the best in the city. Libra Leather. I work with Sam Jones, The Leather Queen. She has great taste and instincts when it comes to leather. Libra Leather has been pioneering leather trends in New York for decades. They provide the selection designers conceptualize their entire leather collection from. They are best in the biz.

The Feather Spray Earrings seem like a big deviation from some of your previous designs. What was the inspiration behind those?

When I launched my line in October 2009 I used feathers in the fabrication of many of those epaulet designs. The feather was lying on my desk at a certain angle and it came to me.. that should be attached to an ear. I guess it’s all the nature videos I watch.

What celebrities have you worked with?

I grew up in NYC so Mary J Blige, Lauryn Hill and Beyonce were the soundtrack of my life. I attended borderline ruff schools and their music was uplifting and their voices strong, I adored them. Now as an adult, this entire experience as a designer has been transcendental for me. I often can’t believe who I’ve turned out to be. Just three years ago I was the most unhappiest girl in the world. I’ve designed for all them. I’ve also created custom accessories for Lil Wayne’s and Prince’s musical tours.. I used to make out with posters of Prince. I’ve designed for Alicia Keys’ Freedom tour. Lauryn Hill just bought my entire collection for her European tour.

What’s your favorite part about being a designer?

The actual design process is probably my favorite part of being a designer. I often struggle between concept and application.. I’ll think about a construction for months before I even attempt to piece it together.. My own thoughts intimidate me. There is an element of anxiety I experience and I know that I’ll figure it out eventually. There are some designs I’ve constructed, not many, that I will never share with the world. I hoard special pieces.

What are the biggest challenges as a designer?

Figuring out which tradeshows to do make me pretty dizzy.

Three must haves to have in your wardrobe?

Combat boots, a black fur and a balaclava.

What is your best moment that you’ve experienced in your career?

All of them have been extraordinary. Getting picked up by Nordstrom, a tour order from Alicia Keys, selling at Patricia Field and having my mom and dad say that they’re proud of me.

What advice do you have for aspiring designers?

Organize yourself. Have a decent website, take good pictures, get a press list, don’t get tired, get motivated. Surround yourself with good people that want good for you. Love yourself and visualize yourself in the place you want to be.

How would you describe your personal style?

My look changes drastically, often. Recently my style is Le Femme Nikita.. assassin chic.

What is the inspiration behind “in love and good fashion” and “good taste must be shared”?

I tend to curate everything. My friends, my wardrobe and words.. I love language and assembling words together.. In Love and Good Fashion fell into place in the first weeks of creating my first collection.. it represents the head set I was in at the time..

Good Taste Must Be Shared is a personal philosophy.. Good taste crosses over into all aspects of living.. food, clothing, jewelry, travel and all of earths spoils.. Everything that is good about anything should be shared and enjoyed.

What’s currently on your iPod?

I don’t have an Ipod but I have been listening to Amy Winehouse, Wu Tang Clan, Florence and The Machine and Lauryn Hill recently.

Describe Mary Had A little Scam and the other short films you are working on based on your line?

I decided to make a short film when the concepts in my head began to move and could only be expressed through video. I’ve watched enough documentaries and films to understand the shooting style I like. I titled the film Mary Had A Little Scam to represent the duality between innocence and a calculated menace. I wanted to create a sexy film that captures the private moments strong women experience when alone.. the awkwardness, paranoia, struggle, uncertainty and ultimate perseverance. The character Mary in the short film Mary Had A Little Scam has a public persona of a fierce rebel leader with the American Accessories Coalition for Good Taste (AACGT). Her mission is to collect rare jewelry from around the world, sharing good taste with the masses.

What are you currently working on for your line right now?

I’m preparing a trip to Paris, meetings, meetings, meetings!

Where do you see Seville Michelle Anastos 5 years from now?

I’m excited for the future. Nothing I’ve done has been planned, my line has swept me off my feet!

Eric Daman Channels Gossip Girl for DKNY Hosiery

Notorious Gossip Girl costume designer Eric Daman is bringing some fab set style to the world of legwear. For the first time, Daman has partnered with DKNY Hosiery on an 8-piece collection of uniquely patterned tights for fall 2011. Blair Waldorf and Serena van der Woodsen would approve.

“Hosiery is a fabulous accessory and truly makes a woman’s outfit,” Daman says. “Having used DKNY legwear so often on Gossip Girl, it seemed completely natural for me to collaborate with a brand I love to work with.”

Michael Kors Getting Into Men’s Underwear

Even though he’s a married lady now, Michael Kors is still trying to get men in his briefs. The fashion tycoon is expanding — pun, as usual, intended — into men’s underwear, loungewear and sleepwear.

The advertising campaign and/or packaging features a badly airbrushed male model with disturbingly small nipples being embraced from behind by a naked woman — probably because the brand doesn’t plan to launch a women’s underthings line anytime soon and because dudes are into naked chicks. So I’m told.

Meanwhile, the line of briefs and boxer briefs — ranging from $28 to $34 — will hit about 100 Nordstrom and Blommingdale’s department stores by the end of the month with Neiman Marcus being added for the holidays. Talk about a stocking stuffer! I’m here all night, kids. [WWD]

Starbucks Brews a Cup of Wang

To celebrate its forty years of delivering sub-par coffee at exorbitant prices, Starbucks has tapped CFDA /Vogue Fashion Fund winners Alexander Wang, Sophie Theallet and Billy Reid to design tops inspired by the coffee conglomerate.

The limited edition tees are $85 a pop and are sold through starbucksstore.com and select Nordstrom stores. Though the designers were given a fee to participate, according to CFDA executive director, Steven Kolb, the project gave them the chance “to give back a little bit which is in keeping with the spirit of the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund.”

Not really sure to whom they’re giving back nor am I sure that the spirit of the Fashion Fund is about selling out hardcore, but for $85 I guess you can have your coffee and wear it too. [WWD]

Cuz We Are Living in a Material World, but Madonna May Not Be Material Girl

In an affront to the gays, pop music and the 1980s, L.A. Triumph Inc.‘s lawsuit over the “Material Girl” trademark is going to trial, despite Madonna‘s attempts to have the case thrown out.

L.A. Triumph claims they hold original trademark rights since their Material Girl juniors clothing line has been sold through Nordstrom and other retailers since 1997. Madonna’s Material Girl, on the other lace-gloved hand, launched just last year.

Madge tried to argue that she was the senior user, having recorded the song some 26 years ago for her Like a Virgin album and basically originating the term, but Judge S. James Otero rejected that argument.

So come mid-October, Material Girl is going to court. L.A. Triumph is seeking unspecified monetary damages and an injunction to force Madonna to change the name of her clothing line.

Sam Edelman Brings His New Purse to Studio 54

I still remember my first pair of Sam Edelmans – ivory ballet flats, gold chain links, toe cleavage – at the very start of the ballerina shoe explosion. At point of purchase, I thought Sam Edelman was a woman, was surprised to find out he used to be the Sam in Sam and Libby. Point is, Sam Edelman has blossomed into a hit shoemaker since its inception in 2004, and rather than resting on his laurels, he’ll be resting on our shoulders as the brand extends to handbags. Will I remember my first Edelman bag like I do the shoes? Seeing as the inspirations behind the different facets of the collection are Studio 54 and Parisian streets, it seems quite likely.

Discoteque means cheetahs on chains and colors in the clutch. It also means little nibblies inside not meant for the eyes of authority, just you, Liza and Jerry in a bathroom stall.

Anna Wintour and her flock of the fabulous have meticulously the selected 10 designers (and design duos) in the running for the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Award. Last year, Billy Reid took the top prize of $300,000, a year of mentorship and a bronze trophy. The two runners-up Prabal Gurung and Eddie Borgo each took home $100,000 and a year of mentoring. Just like the boy himself. Justin Bieber got in touch with his inner lady — it didn’t take much doing — and is coming out with a women’s fragrance — cue the ear-piercing shrieks of girls the world over.

Someday by Justin Bieber, his first fragrance, was born out of the Bieb’s “deep connection” with his fans and his desire to “bring them closer to [his] world.” And being the nauseatingly wholesome gal he is, proceeds from the perfume will go to a Bieber-approved list of charities including Pencils of Promise and the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Everything about Someday is meant to appeal to Bieber’s screeching fanbase of tweens, teens and pedos, from the fruity floral juice to the heart-shaped bottle top and the removable charms about the bottle neck. There’s even a hair mist and a body lotion in addition to the 1 oz, 1.7 oz and 3.4 oz versions of the perfume.

If you’re as excited as I am — preferably more since I couldn’t care less — Someday will be shipping to a store near you in June, such as Macy’s, Sephora, Dillard’s and Nordstrom. You are probably scratching your head at the title, but believe it or not Donald Trump’s signature look is pretty dapper. (Well besides the hair.) Here are the keys ways to look like this millionaire mogul and possible future president of the United States of America.

The Suit: Everyone knows that the suit makes the man and that’s why the Don wouldn’t be caught dead not wearing one. There are many suits that a guy can wear that will carry the same presence. For the more conservative exec a plain black suit that fits well is always recommended and adding a pinstripe in your repertoire will have people appreciating you attention to detail. The Shirt: The same rules apply for the shirt as it did for the suit. You rarely see Donald on Celebrity Apprentice wearing a non solid color (or white for that matter) shirt. Wearing hats for everyday occasions is unfortunately a dying art for the modern woman. More casual times call for more casual, and many times sloppy, dressing habits. But not to fear! I am here to save the ladylike hat one head at a time. If you’re not sure what type of head wear is appropriate for certain occasions, the guide below should be a great help to you. Now you have no excuse for leaving the house without one.

1. Spying on your man in church. You never know when pulling a Carrie Bradshaw and spying on your own Mister Big is going to take you into God’s house. Make sure you’re prepared with wrist gloves and a Sunday hat that will knock his mother off her pew. For a colorful, sophisticated look, try Linea Large Brim Spikey Feather Hat, Nordstrom ‘Drama’ Wide Brim Straw Hat and Kaliko Bright Pink Straw Bow Hat.

2. Cruising on a doomed ship. Vacationers on the Titanic didn’t know about their impending fate, so they were all riding the fabulous high horse. But you don’t need to choose a sinking ship to look as remarkable as they because these fine boating hats will do just fine. For a more traditional look, try the Linea Stripe Bow Tilted Hat or John Lewis Women Stripe Floppy Hat with Bow. If you want a modern take for your summer boating adventures, Vans I’m on a Boat Straw Boater and Eugenia Kim Honey Striped Toyo Sun Hat are great options.

3. Shopping. A lady would never have entered Tiffany & Co. without a hat in Audrey Hepburn’s day – how slovenly! Channel your inner socialite while perusing the Goodwill by covering that risque head of yours. 4. At the doctor’s office. If anyone knows how to seduce, it’s Sophia Loren, especially when she is after a man playing hard to get. You too can feel sexy and chic getting your yearly check-up by channeling her look ala The Millionairess. 5. Boozing. Hats, headbands, it’s all the same in casinos and speakeasies. Breaking boundaries with nonpareil style, flappers knew how to look fantastic while drinking the Devil’s elixir. 6. Mourning the loss of ruined winter shoes. It happens to us every year in the land of snow, sleet and freezing rain. We sacrifice a pair of shoes to keep our feet dry and warm. Although tragic, you can mourn your favorite defunct footwear in style by channeling superstar mob wives like Carmela Soprano, Sandra Corleone and Rosalie Aprile. Black and dramatic is the way to go with styles like these: Misaharada Valeska Hat, Comme des Garçons Bow Detail Hat and Lanvin Swarovski Crystal Pin-Embellished Straw Hat.

7. Frolicking and/or walking on water. Wouldn’t we all love to live in Mary Poppins’ wonderful world of animated fantasy? The answer is obviously yes. And although this may not be possible in a city as grimy as New York, you can still frolic about, wherever you are, in a bonnet of fantastic allure.
