In her fifth season, Daniella Kallmeyer has formed a new lapel that shapes her wool cashmere jackets anew. She’s also formed an alliance with her pattern maker, as she rents workspace in his shop, which ensures her fit is crisp, and her concepts executed with precision. With her whole collection produced in NYC, she organically became a staunch supporter of Save the Garment Center, and at 25, she’s leading her peers to do the same. Her theme was deeply researched and detailed, harkening to film noir, the 90s raver scene and secret societies, but as a finished product, that’s not what’s important to her. You are.

”I hope that the finished product will just be beautiful clothes. And the story won’t matter. That’s what I want my brand to be. Free Exchange Fur: Adrienne Landau from Forest to NYFW to Subway to Me… to HSN

Last week, Vice Magazine posed this furry question. Free Range Fur: Is it still murder if you trap it, skin it, and sew it yourself? Aside from my belief that it is more humane to raise an animal for slaughter than it is to take a free and happy one out of the forest, this week FashionIndie asks our own fur-centric question: Is it still murder if you earn your fur by bartering the written word that embodies Adrienne Landau‘s collection inspiration for her run-of-show pamphlet? What if the initial meeting were to happen entirely by chance, outside of Lincoln Center, whereupon I would as well wind up interviewing her on the subway en route back to our respective offices in the garment center? Could my conscious cope? I think the answer is pretty clear. And I’m wearing it now.

In case your conscious (or wallet) can’t handle the truth about fur, Adrienne Landau’s looking out for you. Also on the lineup with her is Robert Verdi, selling sunglasses that curve, just so, to the top of the head.

Incidentally, it was right after I asked FashionIndie neighbor Robert Verdi for a ride in his most official NYFW Fashion Police car for a lift back to the loft. With a sigh and a tilt of the head, sunglasses unbudged, he informed me they were heading uptown for another show. Sigh, indeed. So I turned afoot, and a few steps later a woman started to talk to me, about my outfit, naturally, this is Fashion Week. After my introduction, she said, “I’m Adrienne Landau.” A warm smile of recognition crossed my face, then we pondered the prospect of splitting a cab to the Garment Center. No cabs? Fine, the subway then. “It’s faster.”

What kind of fur really gets noticed?

Fox. The long hair really attracts. Colored fur draws a lot of people, especially vibrant jewel tones. I have a whole jacket that’s mixed color; a combination of textures.

Who is your biggest designer crush?
Dennis Basso, he’s a good friend. His collection this season was beautiful. It had a younger spin. So lux!

What kind of fur will you never wear in the subway?
I don’t think there’s any fur I wouldn’t wear in the subway. I have to be somewhere fast!

What piece have you been wearing all season?
I made this really big, really, really, really lightweight fox jacket. It’s weightless! Makes you feel like nothing’s on. It looks like sable even though it’s not.

What do you do to pay respects to the animals, aside from making sure they look eternally beautiful?
We make sure everything is from places where they were treated well. We’re very careful about that.

After the interview, she asked if I’d come to the studio the next day and write up the collection inspiration, “You look kooky enough to do it.” Now, without further ado, to the Adrienne Landau Fall 2012 show. (And my fur bartering tool begins)

A collection in three parts:

This collection takes you on a journey from a naturally wild mountainous terrain, through the cold opulence of Russia, and to the sleek minimalistic New York streets. Within every woman lies these facets in opposition, yet each part requires a layering staple, a versatile standout and a piece that speaks directly to the heart.

Adrienne Landau Fall 2012 begins atop a mountain at sunset, colors dancing in the sky, playing in the wind as the free air rustles a melange of textures in harmony. Raccoon highlights leopard printed rabbit as sable tails fringe fox shoulders. A cropped Mongolian takes in the hues of the falling sun. They brighten the wild spirit of the wearer.

Emerging from the wild, the collection refines as it head north to opulent Russia. With dreams of gilded palaces, the hues shift toward jewel tones. A multicolor fox jacket is pieced from vibrant vintage. Rabbit is printed rose. Skirts of sequins are trimmed Mongolian. The pieces are more versatile than an evening gown and command attention at a glance.

Go west to New York as Adrienne Landau addresses the minimalist within us all. A mink motorcycle jacket nods downtown as a leopard printed mink peacoat winks uptown. A knit rabbit cape appeals to every corner of the island. A mini skirt with the classic Landau sable tail fringe and croc riding pants become the special dress up-or-down pieces that flourish in your wardrobe. Visions of little black jackets, the kind a New Yorker can't live without, are luscious and subdued. There is a piece in the Adrienne Landau Fall 2012 for every woman, every mood, every whim, whether wild, opulent or minimal. All are luxurious.

Our Favorite Looks From New York Fashion Week

Over 100 designers debuted their latest collection this past New York Fashion Week. After attending and reviewing most of these shows we’re able to sift through the bad and average and bring you our favorite looks from NYFW.

Marchesa continues to take their design aesthetic to new heights season after season, making interesting and relevant new gowns perfect for the red carpet. -

Unafraid of color and levity, and emboldened by rich wools dyed richer hues, green plaid fronts a pair of trousers that yellow backs. Yellow swims "wavy gravy" with fuchsia on silk. And as it has been proven time and time again: Plaid won't die. This jacket is a lifer.

Good to see that ombre will live another season. Very Downton Abbey meets avant garde. All good adjectives.-

Smart, chic daytime look.-

I can always count on Thom Browne for a dose of surrealistic beauty.-

ODLR brings out the dark side of the fairy tale princess in this stunning gown. -

Rad Hourani's philosophy of unisex transformability is thrown into relief, as intricate layers blend, vertically rising; garments stacked willfully static. Until the moment the wearer decides to rearrange, then the pieces will become that which is unseen at present, and can adorn all whom desire. -

My last presentation for NYFW and a chic, way to end it -- plus, pajamas and fur, what's not to like?-

I love the combination of fabric weights and textures in this look. Fun for going out because no one will look the same.-

10 Fall Trends On The Rise

With New York Fashion Week over and done, we get to see what designers latched onto which wavelengths, sending down similar looks for us to love. Whether it’s an outlined slimming technique, laser technology treated leather, or the red wine that everyone in fashion’s been drinking, there are some trends that have permeated the runways. We’ve gathered 10 trends that have turned our heads from the indie runways up to the big guys’ catwalks. See what you may be wearing in 6 months time, or sooner.

Pulling some tricks from Stella McCartney this outlining trick slims and stuns all at once. it tricks the eye into giving the body perfect curves.

Color blocking has been vertically integrated. Split the scene two-faced for a cool contrast.

The hues run deep in Fall 2012, but none deeper than burgundy. Red wine flooded nearly every runway this week, and left us delightfully buzzed.

Perhaps inspired by the multitude of collar necklaces that have surfaced since Spring, collars are now stepping into the light, taking on their own colors separate from the rest of the garment. And it pops in a way that you won't have to lift it up.

Fanny who? These waist bags are all grown up, and some have even doubled. Hands and shoulders-free has become so chic.

The boob tube turned fuzzy as black and white meshed like a snowy television. The signal may not be coming in clear, but the trend certainly is.

Designers are pointing out your sexiest curves: hips, boobs, shoulders. On point.

Jackets hems hit the floor, billowing out behind as you take a step. The look is regal, the effect is long.

Because we live in the future (and Christopher Kane flourished with it last season), laser cut leather lace is cutting out everywhere.

Whether we're getting our athletics on, or yearning for old "glory days," this trickle up trends has saturated the runway and blown up street style. They. Were. Everywhere.

Thom Browne Fall 2012 Proves a Point

Last season, Thom Browne dropped our jaws with the longest proportions, elongating the limbs and our whims to wear a shirtdress that just doesn’t graze the ground if you’re a 6’1″ woman. This season, he proves a different point, the point of accentuating the natural curves of the body with angular shapes. He brings the waist in with diamond seams, and the shoulders, breasts, hips and knees outward with structured cloth pyramids. He also ponders death and rebirth as models rose out of 10 coffins laying before the audience at the New York Public Library. Was it premonitions of the front-row death of Zelda Kaplan? Likely not, but the collection was drop dead inspiring.

ThreeASFOUR Fall 2012 Comes Full Circle

ThreeASFOUR moves right around in a circular motion, looping from the printed wearability from Spring 2012 to the more experimental outer layers of Fall. The circular thematics broke garments into fragments to assemble spherically. Leather cut laser allowed for a precise interconnectedness, as the pattern looks particularly like a spine spinning in spirals, also partially like wheels turning in a machine. The machine of threeASFOUR – Gabi, Ange, and Adi – work insulated amongst themselves, not adhering to trend cycles, but to their own spherical vision. When Sean Ono Lennon releases the threeASFOUR documentary he is filming, perhaps we will learn more how these circular parts began to turn.

Nanette Lepore Dances in PJs, Reads Tarot with Oscar Wilde & Scolds Naïve Designers in Elevators

Nanette Lepore‘s girls came out today gilded in gold, glowing with jewels, burning with orange, and with a sense of English school girl goes to India. This mod Fall 2012 experiment kicked off with a rendition of The Beatles‘ I Saw Her Standing There and continued with a barrage of pretty dresses. There’s something mystical about the collection, and there’s a dandy explanation, straight from Nanette’s lips. And if you’re a young designer, you need a piece of Ms. Lepore’s mind. She gives it here.

What brought about this mod British Indian melange?

“It was the tarot cards, and no one knows where they originated. Everyone wants to claim the tarot. The inspiration was: Oscar Wilde reads your Tarot cards then you put on your best menswear pajamas and have a great dance party.”

Stunning! That’s a party I want to be a part of. Now a question for President Lepore of Save the Garment Center: If you were in an elevator with a young designer about to send production overseas, what would you say?

I would tell them that they’re out of their mind. That there’s so much opportunity here in New York. Actually there’s one I shared a train ride with who was working in China. I was like, ‘You’re so making a mistake. You have to work here in America.’ She didn’t understand how to do it. And she’s gone, out of business. you can be so hands on and so much in control of your fate if you’re right three. these factories want you to succeed. They’re there to nurture you. They’re not going to cut you off after one season if you haven’t brought your minimums to where they’re supposed to be. They will work with you. So I would do everything in my power to stop them from [going overseas].

INTERVIEW: The Sisters of William Okpo Brighten Fall 2012

Sister sisters Lizzy and Darlene Okpo woke up one morning six months ago and decided they would not be afraid of color for fall. Their brand William Okpo, named after their father, would undergo a brilliant transformation as they designed for the first time with themselves as the wearer in mind. For a young company in their fifth season, whose palette has thus far been hovering in neutrals and black, the jump to technicolor might be a risky one. Will fans follow suit? Given the gasp-inducing melange of colored wools, accented with deceptive plastic pieces and vivid hues, they’re likely to garner a slew of new fans along the way.

Which samples have you been sampling perhaps a bit too much before the show?

Darlene: I love the short mini skirt, and the turtleneck sweatshirt. I love the knitted sweatshirt with the two-toned pants and the varsity jacket.

Lizzy: She’s taking all my looks right now.

D: And I know a lot of people were kind of quirky about it, but the moto jacket.

L: In plastic!

D: You can be stylish in the rain.

Which look changed the most since the initial sketch.

D: This time we kind of knew what we wanted. It was more of getting that statement piece and saying I’m going left while you’re going right. It was all about vibrant colors. It’s wintertime, it’s dark. I wanted to bring confidence to me.

What was the difference between designing for yourself versus your target market?

L: I wouldn’t say it was easy because Darlene and I have different styles, but it was more fun. We looked at everything like, I want that, and that, and that.

D: Actually I’m buying [the floor length varsity jacket]. That’s my number one must have.

L: Stealing it, more likely.

What was that feeling like when you first had the thought, “I’m not going to be afraid of color this fall,” as you said in the pre-show video.

L: We’ve been saying that for seasons! From the beginning we’ve wanted to just go out with color, but we were like, ohh would people like that? But this season it was, why wouldn’t people like that? If people like what you do and enjoy your work season by season, they’re going to learn to just to ride with this new season.

It was a bold move. Those green and yellow wools, ooh! They’re so rich!

D: That was the wacky tacky outfit!

You’re sisters, so I’m sure you have a lifetime of practice, but how do you compromise design decisions?

L: It’s a natural thing. We shared a room forever! When you’ve been able to live with someone for so long, and be forced to go everywhere with them and hang out with them, that relationship is inevitable.

D: We’re business partners. And if we ever decided we want to go our separate ways, our Dad would look at us like we were crazy. I would get the phone call first because I’m the oldest.

L: We still get yelled at by our parents.

When did you get to sleep last night?

L: We didn’t!

D: I did, I went to sleep at like 10 o’clock.

L: You can’t when you’re wiggling around thinking, OHH this has to be sewn by the morning.

D: What’s frustrating is when you’re trying to sleep and you’re dreaming about the clothes.

L: I had a piece of fabric thrown at me in my sleep! Just flying off the shelves, hitting me. That’s called anxiety.

D: Fashion nightmare.

Heads Up! Broad Brims for Fall 2012

We were already sniffing out this wide-brimming phenomenon earlier this week, but when Marc Jacobs sent out magnanimous furry top hats, this trend got a head above the rest. Whether floppy like at Rachel Zoe, cowboy like at Nicholas K, or golden like at Samantha Pleet, the brims are thick set to go all the way around.

#NYFW Shoe Trend: The Bootie Is Back

The skinny stiletto has gone on a long walk for the fall 2012 season, replaced by chunky heels with a more masculine edge. Boots fall in two lengths — ankle length or thigh-high, leaving the mid-calf field all but bare. And black, unsurprisingly is big, but burgundy is a strong color for the season as seen on the runways for Tommy Hilfiger, Alexander Wang, Derek Lam and Diane von Furstenberg, among others.

And New York Fashion Week is busting at the seams with them. We’re talking about boobs. Once relegated to the awkward nip slip, now the tits forward march dominates catwalk, and we love the sheer audacity. These are looks that may remind your man how sexy you can look in that see-thru floor length Yigal Azrouël, if only he buys it for you. Share your desire to replicate these runway looks at home alone with him, then layer into them when you step out in the big bad sadly non-nudist world. INTERVIEW: Creative Director Stefan Campbell Makes Magic at Michael Bastian

At 11 A.M. today, Exit Art was bustling with t-shirt-flannel-n-jeans guys with ladders, gold paint, real leaved branches and tree trunks sitting apart, and two Swarovski crystal chandeliers hanging from a rolling rack. This team of set builders were being kindly and meticulously directed by Stefan Campbell, the man responsible for translating Michael Bastian‘s collection into a three dimensional space that garners an emotional reaction from the audience before the clothes hit the runway. Earlier this week, he removed the front row so Chadwick Bell could have a 14 foot-wide glowing fuchsia runway instead of seven. Today, he’ll be scenting Michael Bastian’s show with Aedes. After speaking with Stefan today, we can confirm that he knows the tricks to making a runway show magical. See Stefan Campbell’s secret tips and advice at the end of the interview. How does your aesthetic change between a show with the classic American prep of Michael Bastian versus some of the more wild designers?

It was important to give Michael Bastian a refined look, as soon as people walk in the door. They’re used to him being a little big sporty, but this season it’s very refined. I approach all my shows with same intensity. People always ask, what has been your favorite show? They all become your babies when you’re in the middle of making them. It’s a constant evolution from the minute you have the idea till the lights go on.

What past experience led you to being the Creative Director on so many top shows like Jason Wu, Alexander Wang, and now Michael Bastian?

I come out of the fashion magazine world. I was a fashion editor for many many moons. I always felt my job was not just get people excited by the clothes, but to almost make the clothes feel legendary within the picture. I was coming up in an era where we were making clothes famous.

We’ve had our rounds of snowfall this New York Fashion Week. Flurries have caught us on our guard on and off the runway. Our screens got fuzzy as we watched busy black and white patterns flurry past. Designers like Alexander Wang, Christian Siriano, Catherine Malandrino and others have already got the buzz, more are likely to follow suit.

Steven Kolb Does the Work, DVF Takes the Credit, and that’s A OK by the CFDA

The workhorse behind the CFDA, C.E.O. Steven Kolb, lingers momentarily on Diane Von Furstenberg‘s runway post-show, making his way from backstage to the front of house. I overheard him tell another journalist, “I do all the work, Diane takes all the credit. It’s established and out in the open.” It’s quite alright with all parties involved; if he didn’t do the lion’s share of the CFDA workload, when would DVF possibly have time to create a collection and run her powerhouse? That said, on the 50th anniversary of the CFDA, there is much excitement abounds with the relocation of CFDA headquarters, so we got a little nosy.

Congrats on the move! Any news on the progress?

Architects are measuring the space, and we’ll be seeing the first round of designs next week. We’ll decide on the final design by end of the month. It will be built by Spring.

How do you plan on continuing to promote the Garment Center even though you’ve moving away from it?

We have the CFDA Incubator program there in the Garment Center. We have 6 designers graduating this spring, and we’re helping them all to find studio space there. We’re seeding the neighborhood. We’ve got 10 more designers we’re helping find space there. We are also conducting a study with the Made in Midtown Design Trust for Public Space to see how we can use the Garment Center better.

And CFDA prospectives on your horizon? What new designers have you excited this season?

I can’t name any. I like every show, I just like going to the shows. I love the collective energy of talented designers and creative people. Fashion Week is one big giant long runway!

What’s the first thing you’re going to do once the giant runway of Fashion Week has come to a close?

I’m going to my house in Pennsylvania to relax.

Ah, that rich citrus scent wafts smokily through New York Fashion Week as many designers are using burnt orange as a carrying color throughout their collections. With varying tones of vibrance, this hue skews dark, often mixed with maroons and deep aqua greens á la Costello Tagliapietra and Band of Outsiders. In a thousand textures and a million ways, expect to see more orange burning to the ground in Fall 2012.

Yigal Azrouël‘s fall 2012 show was dedicated to the “unintentional beauty in mystery” refracted through the lens of a woman both “fearless in her outlook and quiet in her confidence.” And that woman might easily have been Evelyn Mulwray – the heroine from Roman Polanski‘s classic 70s film noir Chinatown – portrayed brilliantly by Faye Dunaway. To wit, Azrouël’s collection mixed the mystery of the film noir femme fatale with the luxe glamour of the 70s then threw a giant raccoon hat on top of it all.

Statement Pieces: Obviously the aforementioned giant raccoon hats as well as an opulent silver fox coat. But a sheer python print silk chiffon gown paired with leather evening gloves — a reoccurring and rather lovely accessory featured throughout the entire collection — was sublime.

Last night I got to enter the magical world that is Barbie’s Dream Closet. There was an astounding amount of pointed pink pumps and Barbie-worthy models a flight up in their dream houses. We got to play in Barbie’s virtual Dream Closet and dress ourselves by tapping the air to the right and left on the my-size screened Kinect. I took to roving the room in search of the best dressed and the most famous, and asked them what constitues their dream closet.

What could the Charming former Ms. Manson want in her dream closet? "McQueen. Margiela. Schiaparelli. Versace from the 80s. Oscar gowns. Valentino gowns. Dolce gowns. I just got five Tim Ford tuxes though, so I've got my fix." She spent her childhood in wool utilitarian dresses, and turns out, she's allergic to wool. "This is my revenge on the hippies. I would see girls with pink tutus and Barbies and I didn't have those, so this is my revenge retroactively."

This guy was on Project Runway in its prime, A.K.A. Season Three. And now he gets the distinct pleasure of designing for Barbie, "There are no limitations. She looks good in everything! She's here to entertain and teach people to aspire." He fills Barbie's dream closet quite literally, but what's in his? "Classics. A beautiful perfect trench and harem pants. Dior suit. Hermes jewelry. Lots of little stripes, sweaters, ooh! A patent leather trench. Anything sparkly, shiny, fur."

Rose McGowan's makeup artist dreams closet full of "Helmet Lang. And Madonna's closet, the whole thing."

Her son (see left) alleges that his mother (center) created the jumpsuit. If that be true then Thank You! Her dream closet is a sea of, "Fabulous shoes, gloves, vintage. I get designer and alter them perfectly. I love Prada. And I need Barleans coconut oil on everything for everything."

The other half of him is a designer, artist, musician, etcetera. His dream closet would contain "Thousands of hats."

She manages The Drums, and the way she dresses, I'd want her backstage too. In her dream closet lies, "Everything Vivienne Westwood. And Miu Miu. Literally everything they make, I want it all."

This jewelry designer dreams of a closet stocked with, "Fur. Lots of fur. Snakeskin. And jewels, anything that shines." Jatalika is an accessories designer. Dropping a line in 2 months time.

We four had a fashion lovefest over Barbie, and by Barbie I mean what the other was wearing. From left to right, Thomas wants an "All gold suit; shiny, rock n roll." Adtresa's dream closet lacks but a "Coco Chanel purse." Stylist Chris Pearson is precise about his need for an Alligator bag.

As the creator of the fringed record bag and silk jacket, the thing that she needs in her dream closet is a "Beaded Fur Kimono."

From the Sheets to the Streets: How Long Did it take these NYFW Street Style Stars to Get Ready?

When you see the epically inventive street style that embodies New York Fashion Week, do you ever wonder how long they labored over their looks? Hours of prepping and pulling and trying and throwing clothes all about their bedrooms? My dear, please! These are professionals. I stopped the ones that struck my fancy, and theirs, and asked them straight up how long did it take you to get ready this morning? Their answers may either surprise you and/or leave you a little skeptical. Keep in mind though, those with fashion in their soul just know.

LA stylist turned it out outside of BCBG, then again when I spotted her in long creme lace at GenArt. It took her 10 minutes to put this together. It's called being a professional -

The bug-eyed glasses may have snapped to my attention first, but settling into the sleeve contrast and pink pops, the look is evermore interesting. The look was inspired by the Japanese anime FLCL (pronounced foolie coolie), thus, somehow, the process was quick to put the look together.

A vision in orange neoprene and Christopher Kane via that fluid filled iPad case, AND the studded shoes, this guy says he wore the bottom layers to the gym this morning (a hoodie? we believe it) and threw the rest on in a matter of minutes.

Holding his girlfriend/co-blogger's Chanel purse in one hand, and his badass style in the other, this Italian and his stallion-like fur looks as chill as he does chic.

What a Joy to behold! It took this fashionably late writer literally 10 minutes to jump into her Jewel by Lisa dress and Mercury sunnies.

The former half of the Dee and Ricky design/blogging duo rolled out of bed and came in what he wore the night before. If it werqs, it works.

This dashing matching couple struck a chord, the veil taking it all a notch above. They allegedly "did not take long getting ready."

After this trend scouter was styled by BCBG for their show in these shorts and shirt, it only took her 15 minutes to assemble the rest.

Her chain hits her chest while she's waiting for her friend's show. Longtime friend of designer Titania Inglis rocks a chain from back in the day with a crisp Risto jacket. And it took her exactly 1 hour and 6 minutes to get ready, shower and vitamins included.

The sight of his neckware made me gleefully giggle, wave in its general direction whispering YESSS. He smirked and told me that he makes them. So, in addition to the few minutes it took him to get dressed in the A.M., he put his time into the hard work to make the hardware -

In her mom's 90's Comme des Garçons velvet paper bag gauchos, she took 20 minutes in the morning to ready herself. That is after a week and a half of outfit prep. Refreshing honesty from the curating eye of the stunning new online boutique

This born and bred Brooklynite menswear blogger took 5 minutes to get his reds in order.

Spotted last night at the Tim Hamilton show at MILK, the green spotted shoes against the paid, somehow tied together with denim, fur and lace made for a texture extravaganza. And obviously, like all good fashion boys and girls, it took her just a few minutes to coordinate.

#NYFW Cheat Sheet: Cynthia Rowley Fall 2012

Cynthia Rowley is coming in loud and clear thanks to all the volume in her fall 2012 collection. Inspired by mechanics and overalls, Rowley offered up a ladylike take on blue collar dressing with many a sack, a billowy coat and an occasional jumpsuit parading down the runway.

Color Palette: Blacks and blues, rosy hues, some mean greens and a bold print here and there.

Statement Pieces: I’m always a fan of a sack and this number was a personal favorite — like something a younger, sexier Grandma Yetta would wear on a date.

Makeup: There were bejeweled collars which — understandably — took my attention from the models’ faces.

Front Row Name Drops: Someone left the door to Terry Richardson‘s gutter open and he waltzed in shortly before the show started. Front row regulars Mickey Boardman, Derek Blasberg and Waris Ahluwalia. I also thought I saw fitness celebrity John Basedow, but sadly, I was mistaken.

Runway Music: All right, confession time. See, there were waiters walking around with mini-bottles of Prosecco, right. And I was already clawing at the bottom of mine by the time the lights dimmed. So between that and my obsessive tweeting, kinda missed that part. But it was loud, if that helps. #fail

Theophilus London Turning Tables for Fashion Week Fêtes

Last night, the dapper rapper Theophilus London traded in the mic for a turntable, and took his turn as DJ to the fiery fêtes of NY Fashion Week. The FashionIndies hit the Joseph Abboud after party with London as the DJ on the invite. Fashionably late, and several dirty 90s hip hop songs in, we realized it was not Theophilus spinning. The new garde fashionisto had already made moves for a more (literally) underground party at the W Hotel‘s former Downstairs, the new Lilium. Well played, sir. We made our way W-wards and got down to his rap ass rap set. Don’t get too bummed, catch his set tonight, if you can.

He’s touting his tunes all over town to the fashionable elite. Next stop, the Rebecca Minkoff after party at the Darby Downstairs tonight. Then he’s setting the mood for Rachel Roy‘s after party on Monday.

On the second floor of MILK Studios (the oft preferred alternative to Lincoln Center), newlyweds Jeffrey Costello and Robert Tagliapetra showed their Fall 2012 collection in a rush of coral reef-like prints and soothing colored draping. Having been together 17 years, their marriage didn’t change anything too drastically. In fact, the were in love before they went into business. In such happiness, they also give back to Mama Earth by using AirDye to color their fabrics; they don’t use water, which typically harbors toxins and releases them into water sources. Wich such positivity in their world, Jeffery’s watercolor paintings of chrysanthemums blossomed into a Costello Tagliapietra collection that delights.

Color palette: Burnt orange and browns with deep ocean green-blues and multi-sided lavender and pink.
Mood: Underwater life meets 30′s draping and Beetlejuician intentions. It’s a kind of comfort that can keep uptown chic.

The Lady Vanishes: 5 Konspiracy Theories Why Karlie Kloss Kancelled on NYFW

Karlie Kloss won’t be making any appearances on the runways during New York Fashion Week this season because “an engagement has come up.” This alleged engagement means a loss of thousands upon thousands of dollars for the super-in-training so whatever reason it is, it must be something good. And having no facts or clues on which to base supposition, we’ve come up with five conspiracy theories regarding her possible whereabouts.

- Karlie Kloss, movie star. Kloss’ rise to superstardom in the world of modeling means that Hollywood will begin knocking on her door, if they haven’t rammed it down already. Karlie may be following in the strides of other model-turned-actress Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and is eschewing the catwalk for the film studio.

- Maybe she’s born with it, maybe it’s a beauty contract. While the runway pays well for girls of Karlie’s stature, a beauty campaign can set a model on the catwalk to Easy Street for the rest of her life. Since snagging Estée Lauder, when’s the last time you saw Hilary Rhoda walk a show?

- Karlie Kloss, new creative director at Christian Dior. This may be a bit of a stretch, but the house does love them some Kloss. She hasn’t missed a step in a single Dior show — from couture to resort — in years and Bernard Arnault might want to just keep her around.

- Strike a pose, there’s nothing to it. As everyone knows, models making the cover of Vogue is as rare as a viable Republican candidate for the presidency. So what better reason to cancel on Fashion Week than to jet off to Paris for an exclusive shoot with Mario Testino for a star-making cover?

- Karlie Kloss DiCaprio. After she walked in the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, Leonardo DiCaprio was reportedly smitten with the leggy Ms. Kloss. He’s landed Gisele and Bar Refaeli, why not add the newest bright young thing to his collection of catwalkers?

In maybe one of the most original presentations I’ve seen during New York Fashion Week, Lauren Moffatt‘s effortlessly chic Fall 2012 line was shown on models writing on the chalkboard, playing with chemistry sets and standing before easels painting a classic still life.

Color palette: Soft muted neutrals were complemented by rich navy and dotted with innocent hues like pink and yellow
Mood: Young and giddy with an underlying tone of mischief
Statement Pieces: Though no piece stood out much more than others, her sequined pieces sparkled, making the them perfect for day-to-night wear

The sharpest of voyeurs prowl, lens aloft, scanning the sea of people for a glimmer of something divine. A being that emerges from the darkness in illustrious opposition. The great search is for those who enlighten the eye’s mind. The result of such a thorough hunt equals images that bring crisp covetable style to eyes across the planet. This week, the pool shrinks; the purveyors of style are gathered in one spot. For street style photographers, it’s like shooting fish in a barrel.

How dare this blogger take a picture of this fearsome editor in chic! Unless your name is Terry, Patrick or Annie, get out of her face. But this street stylist has managed to capture the sharp jaw and mascu-femme layering that embodies that power woman look. In silk, wide legged pants by Nomia under a sheer Factory by Erik Hart top, covered by sleeveless just-buttoned-at-the-top silk Nomia, capped with a cropped brocade Amy Claire tank. With a Chanel[esque] jacket and a fur vest shorter than the that which is beneath it, she's well insulated from the bustling that could never really disturb her. Her accessories are sharp, quite literally; pointed rings, spiked necklace, Zhao oxford bag, snakeskin six-inch Walter Steiger curved heels, and, angled Elizabeth and James frames all enforce their general policy of: If you don't know me, don't talk to me. I'm at werq.

She may be a boutique owner or a designer client; either way, she's a sleek high power buyer. A block away from a buzzy off-site show, she passes the common folk, and also a photog across the street. Radiance emanates off the monochromatic ombré. In a sheer striped, nude backed sack dress and a cropped lustrous woven blazer, both by Amy Claire, she is at once strong and sun-kissed and leaping out of her surroundings. Yellow and golden jewelry sweeps down her body in abundance brought on my NYFW. The photographer got the shot, yet she may never know she's been snapped.

This beauty off duty has the layering right. In and out of hair and makeup, she's got her sheer Silver button up under the loose arm-sweater of . Beat up leather over top super high-waisted multi-textured Tilly & William pants, Liebeskind slouch messenger and calf hair Dr. Martens, she's turning it in the chillest manner allowed near Lincoln Center. And kind of miffed that she's not getting paid for this photo.

Miss Thing, she is a socialite. Or Anna Dello Russo. Or both. She's mastered the all-dressed-up-with-just-a-dress look along with all that goes on top. The jagged pattern and ribcage exposure make this Factory by Erik Hart dress singularly noticeable, but add a Philomena Kwok headpiece, Walter Steiger inverse platforms, heavy jewelry and a giant patchwork fur stole, she's got a look that reels the street style eyes in. And maybe a name, too.

How about a little light nighttime pattern mashing? After an evening show of a young designer, this indie blogger revels in the pride of being asked to stop for a street style shot; they're practically colleagues. She works it for the camera in a paint-printed Factory dress under a busier Amy Claire skirt, topped by a Theodora and Callum Aztec scarf. Her hair is tied into a thousand silk scarves, another bowing around her neck in place of a necklace. Her Swatch and hot pink airplane ring keep is feisty, while the N:F:P leg warmers keep it slim and practical. The floral Walter Steiger seven-inchers truly are everything. The super-cat-eye and thin thin Geisha lip keep up with the look-at-me look.

After Tonight, I Never Want to Go to Another Fashion Week Party Again

New York Fashion Week officially starts on Thursday but after Wednesday night’s preemptive debauchery I am ready for it all to be over.

Not only was tonight a tremendous waste of time and money but it was also the biggest load of crap I’ve experienced since…well, last Fashion Week. Perhaps there was something in the air or a full moon or maybe New York just forgot to take its “Don’t Be a D-Bag Pill,” but attempting to go out on the town proved ultimately fruitless.

At not one but three parties scheduled for tonight, my fellow editors Mac, Amanda and I were met with tiny dives “at capacity,” doormen who were bigger assholes than usual — which is quite a feat in and of itself — and long, sloppy, ill-managed lines, which in the dwindling days of summer is all well and good. Or at least tolerable. But not in freezing weather with snow drifting down upon our heads.

What, pray tell, is the point of attending these parties when all we’re met with is attitude, crowds, and even more attitude? A free drink or two — or in my case, twelve? The chance to spot a C- and if you’re lucky B-list celebrity? The cache of saying you were “there” at whatever hotspot is currently on fire? If so, be my guest to stand in line for an hour over the course of the upcoming week from hell — just make sure you have a flask tucked into your garter belt.

I, however, would rather just get drunk in the office with my FashionIndie kin and avoid the general clusterfuck steadily descending all over this fair (?) city. I’ll take the shows and presentations because that’s what Fashion Week is all about and leave the parties, name-dropping and general bitchery that comes along with it to those with far more patience than I. There’s already too much to do and too much to worry about to add another line and another list to the equation.

10 Essentials Elements for (an Unseasonably Warm) New York Fashion Week

Twice a year, we at FashionIndie raid, ransack and rape our closets in an effort to put together a compelling look that will have all other fashionistas wishing they had stayed the eff home. In September, the last vestiges of summer make it slightly easier to turn it proverbially out, but February usually requires a lot of layering and the outfit often has to be cruelly covered up to stave off the ravages of winter. This New York Fashion Week, however, the winter has been suspiciously mild. Temperatures have barely dipped below freezing and nary a snow flake has dropped in weeks. So let’s just ignore our impending doom thanks to the totally buzz-killing reality of global warming and instead focus on what matters: dressing for the Tents. Here are 10 staples — 5 for the guys and 5 for the gals, but feel free to mix and match since we actively don’t subscribe to gender constructs — for NYFW.

The Trench While it's not necessarily sub-zero, it's not Miami in August either, but a trench is a coat for all seasons.

The Fur A floor-length fur coat might be a little overkill -- PETA joke! -- but if Rachel Zoe has taught us anything it's that a fur vest is not only always appropriate, it's practically mandatory.

The Man Bag While the inside of your bag may look like the dumpster behind a pharmacy, at least the outside can appear elegant...or at least coherent. Which will be more than can be said about you come the week's end.

And Now It’s Time to Catwalk…for Your Life: Casting for New York Fashion Week with Andrew Weir and ACW Worldwide

“Now watch the flames shoot out of her feet,” gushes casting director Andrew Weir after instructing veteran catwalker Tanya Dziahileva to take a stroll. Adding, “And she is giving us a loooook,” in reference to the model’s fingerless lace gloves and a rather jaunty chapeau. The fashion was a major point of conversation during Andrew Weir’s ACW Worldwide Casting event this Saturday. So much so that Mr. Weir mentioned that he’ll have trend-forecasters on-site next time around. Having noticed girl after girl march by wearing variations on a singular theme, Mr. Weir proclaimed, “The trend this season is all about black, skinny jeans with this sort of waxy finish. It’s a sea of black.” The one exception was a model who dared to wear a beautiful white dress by The Row – “I hope you keep it clean,” he warns.

If you were in the city this weekend, you might have noticed a number of freakishly tall and thin girls running around town, their books in hand,which means one thing – it’s casting time for New York Fashion Week! Over the course of six hours, hundreds of girls — from up-and-comers to bona fide runway stars — ushered through the Hudson Hotel‘s gorgeous library to see and be seen by Andrew Weir and his team of professional model wranglers from ACW Worldwide.

“I met her seasons ago in Paris when she was 14,” Weir later tells me once Tanya Dziahileva has left, with more than a hint of wistful sentiment. “I could never pronounce her last name and I don’t even try. She’s always been Tanya D. to me.” On his note card he writes “No Words.”

Mr. Weir seems to have a personal relationship with many of the models that stomp through his biannual casting. He jokes with them, asks them about their vacations, their families and boyfriends — anything to make them feel at ease. Meeting a doe-eyed 16-year old Brazilian who spoke little to no English and who was wandering about the city all by her lonesome, he seems genuinely concerned. But he is also impressed with her walk, noting that she indeed has potential although she’s not quite ready for the runway.

Whenever a girl does strike his particular fancy, Weir has them walk twice, maybe more and he personally takes their photo. In the case of Arlenis Sosa and Ajak Deng — both big names in the industry — a fuss is understandably made with Mr. Weir remarking to Ajak, “You’re going to lose three pounds by show time we’re gonna make you walk so much!” But sometimes there is a new girl that also warrants a fuss, such as a statuesque brunette who recently switched agencies. “If you’re at the wrong agency, I’ll never see you. It’s insane,” he says before taking some photos of the girl. After she’s left he confides in one of his agents, “She’s going to be huge. This is like a star moment.”

Which has to be a compliment to any young model — a seal of approval from one of the top casting directors in the business. However, only time will tell if he will cast her for one of the four shows ACW is handling this season: Jen Kao, Thakoon, Rebecca Taylor and Joseph Abboud. Sunday saw the second round of casting and the final list will be decided upon the night before the shows. For some girls it will be a busy season and for others it will be better strut next time.

One girl who made an impression had walked for Mr. Weir in the past, but like the doe-eyed Brazilian teenager, she wasn’t “there” yet. ”Quite an improvement from a few seasons ago,” Mr. Weir says with a smile of approval. He then gets up from his chair to take several pictures of the model, jots down a few notes about her then calls the next sartorial lamb to the altar.

Caycee Black & Alisha Trimble Kickstart Fashion Week With Film Premiere

New York Fashion Week is quickly approaching, and what better way to kick it off than with fashion films. In an era of Vimeo and video lookbooks, Brooklyn-based designers Alisha Trimble and Caycee Black have taken the video campaign idea a bit further with the upcoming debut of their fashion films. The designers have teamed-up to premiere their films Dry and Between Two Worlds on February 8 at the Milavec Hakimi Gallery at 7pm.

Alisha Trimble collaborated with director Seth Edwards to shoot an innovative, genre-bending short on 16mm film. The story line is an Old-Hollywood-meets-contemporary society take of two actresses fighting for the limelight. The dramatic tension is fueled with music by Emily Zuzik and Tim Lefebrve.

Caycee Black created an intertwining of moments and clues along a woman’s path on Super-8 film with experimental filmmaker Mary Billyou. Caycee’s paintings, which turn into her prints each season, are filtered through the film in playful movement. The film was described by Billyou as “a sunny day, Kuleshov visits Fort Tilden’s ruins, in the form of a Brighton Beach model dawning polka-dots and acid colors, accompanied by a haunting melody, futuristic static, and crickets.” If that looks as genius as it sounds, we can’t wait.

Marc Jacobs Entire Collection STOLEN

Some style savvy thieves are in heaven right now: Marc Jacobs‘ Spring 2012 one of a kind sample collection has been stolen from a train leaving Paris on its way to their press day. Who could it be! Angry team from Dior punishing him for not joining their brand? Is Carla Bruni in desperate need of cocoon shaped pregnancy coats? More details after the jump.

The company sent out the following email:

Dear all,The Marc Jacobs PR team is sorry to inform you that our press day tomorrow [a refresher of the clothes that were first shown on the catwalk. What, the models' googly-eyed death stares were distracting, alright?] in the Marc Jacobs store is cancelled, due to the theft of the spring/summer 2012 collections during its transfer from Paris.

They have no solid leads yet, but since these unproduced items are one of a kind at the moment, it shouldn’t be too hard to track back once we find these things on eBay. I hope they catch him on the move though, because we really want to see the layering job this thief did with 46 runway looks.

Full Color Spectrum of Spring Fashion Week

Amongst the bevy of busy prints that has shaped this fashion week, we’ve noticed how equally represented Roy G. Biv has been. These shades, however, are unique to now, with a sense of vibrancy. According to designers in the Big 4: New York, London, Milan and Paris, it’s going to be a colorful Spring. Taste the rainbow.

The red of next spring is primarily bold. Think fire trucks and Louboutin soles.

In contrast to this past spring's tangerine, this orange has gone pumpkin, with reddish bronze undertones.

Just shy of neon, this near-blinder shows hints of marigold. It's vibrant and saturated, ready to tackle any busy print in a fight for loudness.

Green is feeling minty fresh. The pastel finish is crisp and clean.

True blue is blowing up cobalt. There's a great depth in this striking color.

Baby got back to the hue of blue that kisses the sky through a layer of mist.

Lavender sweeps in with an essence of calm. The color is regal, light as a princess (not nearly as light at Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge - skinny bid).

Jeremy Scott Rides the Kooky Cowboy

Ass-less chaps took the front seat at Jeremy Scott – backside baring antics roused the buzz that circulated his show in the days that surrounded New York Fashion Week. Now, with a little distance and a continent between now and then, we revisit. Centered around the Scott-idolized Beverly Hillbilly, Elly May Clampett, we can get a clearer idea of where Jeremy is coming from. Which is actually Kansas City, Missouri. You can take the girl out of hicksville, but you can’t leave all the tack behind. Let’s break down the show and weed through the wacky tack to the heart (and taste) of the collection.

Here lie the ass-less chaps of which we speak. They're cheeky – not a far cry from a young Betsey Johnson or Vivienne Westwood. And they got people talking.

Jeremy busts a move into toward the Texas Tuxedo with jean on jean, however, in shapes anew. We're harking back to the overall, a natural progression on our 90's kick, but that chainmail bandana brings that garment to a new light.

In the most salable aesthetic of the show, he brings a southwestern feeling print into the colors we'll want for spring - sans brown undertones.

Desert-ready, the cacti and sunglass motif at least gave us something refreshing: it's

The middle fringe is a cool new way of envisioning the shape of fringe. The two on the outs prove not all that's gold, glitters.

You're giving too much cowbell here. No, we didn't think it was possible either. But dangling question marks off mesh? Studded fringed red leather dress? Fire emblazoned hot rods? (Okay, fine, look at Prada.) But the cow print beneath Barbie pink boob heart cutouts is weird enough, then he ends it with the Jersey-shore-ready bikini body trompe l'oeil sequins. So while there are lovely bits to this collection, it is insulated with a thick layer of kook. Which is just how Jeremy Scott likes it. There is just enough wearability within this show that he should do just fine with his ho's at the market. Well enough to show what literal theme he'll stab at next season.

Springing for 2012 Trends from New York and London

Spring 2012 is blooming before our very eyes as trends fall in fringe, sprout like flowers and actively kick it into hyperspeed. Designers from New York and London are on a wavelength that transcends oceans, and that frequency is tickling our future wardrobes with trends we love.

The sweetest color story to ice the runway is sherbet's pastel palette. Light and fruity, it harkens back to childhood only with a twist of business silhouette.

Sportswear is actively working its way into the daily regalia. It'll leave you prepared to break a sweat without a change.

This overskirt piece has been adding volume since the 19th century. Now done in our favorite muted brights, they kick a pencil skirt up.

Leave a sleeve off for the asymmetry of it. The cut is feels right in sheer and bouncy textiles.

Fringe is falling on spring, shagging shirts and leaving them stringy. Shimmy and shake in this new take on the 20's trim.

We already sniffed out the painted floral trend on the third day of NYFW, but the powerful flower prints just keep on sprouting. Whether digitized in a McQueenian manner or illustrated á la art deco, the prints we've been going gaga over have the same common blooming thread.

There’s a definite consensus around the FashionIndie office regarding this season at the tents: lackluster. Gone was the excitement and the thrill of the new and in its stead stood a circus comprised of the old guard impatiently appraising the crop of would-be streetstyle stars and the army of bloggers hanging about as they waded through the muck of the nameless and the irrelevant to find a collection onto which to pin their ever-dwindling hopes . Annabel Tollman Talks Trends, Night to Day Dressing, and Why Young Designers Are The Most Creative Type

During the few weeks in between seasons when you wake up freezing and are sweating by noon, the conventional rules of fashion go completely out the window. To help wrap our heads around how to dress right now, we chatted with uber glam stylist Annabel Tollman about her tips on transitional dressing, making an outfit work from night to day (note the difference), and why young designers might just be more creative than the bigger players.

What advice do you have for all the young designers showing at Lincoln Center this year?

“Necessity is the mother of all invention. Young designers are possibly more creative because they have to be. Don’t necessarily expect to come and show your first season at Lincoln Center, that is not what it is about. You’re going to show at a friend of your mum’s house sitting on folding chairs.”

What do you think are some predominant trends coming up this season?

“I think we’re going to carry on seeing a lot of color. I do feel this sort of 30′s/70′s thing will continue. A lot of color and a lot of print, it will be quite nice”

Do you have any tips on day-to-night dressing?

“I actually have some great tips on nigh to day dressing. I used to work at Interview magazine and I remember hearing about all the socialites that would go out all night and come straight to work, be at the magazine all day, have a disco nap, get changed and go out all over again. Therefore, instead of wearing your day clothes and throwing on a red lip and a heel, why don’t you wear your evening clothes, and wear something that will make it work.”

What are some of those pieces?

“You can throw on a heather grey sweatshirt or a wacky clunky shoe or Converse. Dress down an evening gown, that’d be my choice.”

Do you have any transitional weather tips?

“In New York, your clothes have to go a long distance. We’re very hard on our clothes, we are in and out of taxis, on subways, it is very hot, very cold, and it rains cats and dogs. Always pack flats and a tiny little fold up umbrella in your bag, and check the weather before you go out.”
