It’s been a tough year for women’s fashion magazines across the board, except for Vogue, which has managed to increase its ad pages by 9% and its newsstand sales by 13%, thus earning it the title of Ad Age‘s Magazine of the Year. Conversely, Glamour‘s ad pages and newsstand sales are down – by 7% and 17%, respectively. As Condé Nast‘s biggest seller, it’s imperative that Glamour turn a strong profit for their publishing parent; and so to ensure that, Leive is planning a redesign and overhaul of the mag.

The new Glamour will launch in March with new columns and contributors and an increased focus on pop culture. Michael Angelo, Nylon‘s former art director has also been brought on to assist with the redesign. “The format of many women’s magazines — Glamour included! — hasn’t changed much for a decade,” Leive told WWD, ”but young women are consuming media in totally different ways now. Our team is creating a new Glamour and glamour.com for this new generation of readers….”

Hopefully someone informed Ms. Leive that this  new generation of readers doesn’t actually read. [WWD]

The magazine — ingeniously title Style.com Magazine  – will be “very much focused on Spring/Summer 2012 collections,” says editor-in-chief Dirk Standen. “We are going to spotlight the most interesting people, places and clothes of the season, but beyond that we are hoping to convey to the reader what the experience of going through that intense four week cycle is like.”

Nylon Magazine and Teen Vogue‘s Lina Kutsovskaya has been hired as creative director for the mag, which will also include insightful commentary from regular contributors Tim Blanks and Nicole Phelps, as well as from freelancers — in particular, young photographers.

Coinciding with the launch of their new pub, Style.com will also dabble in e-commerce with “Instant Gratification.” As Standen explains it:

“We are working with 6 New York City designers to be announced during fashion week. They are going to make a very limited number of pieces available directly from their Spring collection, so that people will be able to buy them right away. We are going to coordinate it with the launch of the magazine so, technically end of October. They will be able to buy it and will receive a nice package in the mail within days.”

Launching not only a magazine but an e-commerce business is a bold move on Style.com‘s part, but with the roster of talent at their fingertips and the rather brilliant “Instant Gratification” model, Standen and co. stand a good chance of making it.

Drew Barrymore hosted Nylon Magazine’s Denim Issue on the rooftop of West Hollywood’s London Hotel last night. The August cover girl turned it out in a metallic ensemble reminiscent of Hunter S. Thompson’s Fear and Loathing. Trippy yes, but oh so cute. Go Drew. Other attendees included James Marsden, Peaches Geldof (because a party’s not a party without Peaches!), Lake Bell, Channing Tatum’s ball and chain Jenna Dewan, Kelly Osbourn and that girl standing behind Drew in the picture above.

Last night, Nylon Magazine had a party at the Puma Social Club, and Taylor Momsen’s band ” The Pretty Reckless” were there playing  live. Their set was great, and this kid has talent. More photos and video after the jump…

I’m seriously feeling my fellow dot head MIA on the cover of Nylon this month. How cuteroo is she? But little does anyone know she has a little sis, Kali Arulpragasam, who designs a pretty bad ass line of jewelry called Super Fertile. She makes these foot long plus oversized gold and silver plated necklaces, rings and “ear covers” address social issues such as the caste system in India, as well as environmental issues such as endangered species. My personal fave is a necklace from the CRA$H line with a graph of the U.S. National debt.

I don’t know about you, but I think debating politics, religion, and social ills can be a real pain. Either because no one knows what they’re talking about or people get all emotional and faces turn red. So I figure this is the perfect solution. Zoe Saldana lands the Nylon cover, after much talk about the magazine being a bit more gendered towards white girls in the past.  She breaks the magazines trend, which has only featured blanca’s (Daniel’s term for white girls) since their Lil’ Kim spread in 2003. Inside, Zoe chats about racism in Hollywood, her rise to fame, and her character Neytiri from Avatar.

UPDATE: Nylon hasn’t only featured white girls in the past seven years. In 2007 they featured Devon Aoki on the cover and scrunchies are definitely back.

Even though she allegedly wasn’t allowed at New York Fashion Week, or at least not asked to return to her position at Emmanuel Ungaro, Lindsay Lohan continued to do what she does best – party – at a bash in Paris to celebrate Fashion Week.

I’m loving the heavy eyeliner under her hipster glasses and the denim cutoff vest. I wonder if she made out with Derek Blasberg (pictured), a writer at V and VMAN. Hmmm…

The massive soiree, which was thrown by GrandLifeNYC and Tommy Saleh, was photographed by Steven Rojas for Nylon magazine’s Web site.  Also in attendence – Erin Wasson, Irina Lazareneau, and Henry Holland.

The girls of Waffles + Falafels have graced the e-pages of Nylon once again (I think this is the third time) for a hilarious interview with the Insider.  They reveal the crew, how they came together, and a few random questions all summing up:

Work was not easy on Friday after we all partied the night away at the Soho Grand Hotel the night before. If you weren’t aware, Fashion Indie co hosts a party every Thursday night at the hotel that’s organized by Niko Liakaris. We’re also lucky enough to team up with DJ Lindsay Luv, Jon Daly, Gabi Richmond and Against Nature as well.

This week we had a few special guests from CFE (Centre for Fashion Enterprise) and guest DJ Allan Bendy, along with Kate Lanphear and some friends from NYLON magazine all in attendance. Belvedere was kind enough to provide the party with way more than enough vodka, and like all of Niko’s parties, we didn’t let any of that go to waste.

Thanks to all of you who made it out this week, and for those of you who couldn’t make it, hopefully we’ll see you next time. I also want to thank Mike Mabes for these amazing photos!

I’m sure by now you’ve seen all of our ‘Last Night’s Party’s from last week, and you know that Thursday night we were at Webster Hall for Diesel’s U:Music talking with Cobra Starship and Passion Pit, and then avidly blogged until 5am so that you could all see the details from the night first, so our weekend started quite early.  Of course, we headed out Friday and Saturday to some different spots so we could (hopefully) have crazy/funny stories on Monday.

Our Friday started early as we felt the effects of staying up all night, and woke up early to head to the Nylon and SoBe Life Water sample sale and runway event and were sad to find that Daniel and Rebecca were not there.  Regardless, the event was a good time, a great turnout, and I got a few Hellz Bellz tees from the sample sale (which I’m quite excited about). Photos of this event are now up on Cult. Later, we met Daniel and Rebecca and headed over to a meeting with a potential party spot for Fashion Indie, and enjoyed a nice lunch. Then it was time for naps before the real partying began.  

Corey’s night started out at Webster Hall with Atrak, here’s what he had to say:

I spent Friday night at Webster Hall courtesy of my new aquaintance Lindsay Luv. As if the bottle service wasn’t enough, we had the best table in the house for A-Trak and Treasure Fingers, two of the best (and my favorite) DJ’s in the industry. The floor below was jam packed with kids, 90% of which couldn’t see they were so messed up, but every last one of them couldn’t help but move to the insanity that was A-trak. For a DJ set I must say it ended a bit early, so that meant it was time head over to The Annex to meet up with Hillary for promised fun at Ruff Club with Aaron K.

I never fail to follow through on a promise. After hitting up Angels and Kings (a bar I actually used to frequent..no mocking, please), I realized exactly why I stopped going there, so left and headed to have some real fun at Ruff Club.

Aaron K was ready to party as usual, in his giant tulle bow fastened with a brooch (which was absolutely amazing), and so were all of our other friends at Ruff. Needless to say, the night was full of good music, good friends, and not one, but two bottles. We closed the night outside chatting with new friends, and headed back to World Trade around 5am, luckily making it without any lost shoes.

Saturday was a bit more low-key (although I did not fail to miss the parade happening in Jersey City, anyone know what that was?), I headed down to Peculiar Pub to meet with Corey and a few of his old friends, and found myself surrounded with people I would find at every bar in Michigan (which isn’t a good thing, like that guy up there from the “New Haircut” video on Youtube) After a drink we left and headed to Red Head, which was quiet and relaxed, just the way I like it for a Saturday night.  We somehow managed to look down at our phones and realize it was 3:30AM, so closed the night with the bar, and parted ways.

No complaints for this weekend, it was a lot of fun, and we love Ruff Club as usual, sorry for the lack of crazy stories, I’m sure we’ll make up for it this week!

LINKAGE: 5.14 – NYLON GUYS SPRING IN-STORE EVENT

While it’s pretty awesome that DJ Atrak is playing cover star on the latest issue of Status Magazine, what intrigues me more is the “Indie-prenurial” coverage of Nylon editor Marvin Scott Jarett. While I’m not the biggest fan of the editor, I’m curious to see if he has any answers for why he featured Lindsay “Unhirable” Lohan on the cover of their 10 year anniversary issue.

Seriously dude. She’s about as intersting as chronic foot pain caused by gout. I would have been more inclined to pick that shit up if Courtney Love (aka Older Lindsay) was on the cover. At least she’s far to drugged up to monitor her comments and the interview would have been interesting. I tried reading that issue during a bowel movement and for the first time ever I felt the need to cut and run.

Anyways, if anyone can send me a copy of this magazine, I’m hoping the “indie” editor can redeem himself.

In the March 2009 issue of Nylon Magazine, Kristen Stewart is bites back at rumors that she had a fling with her Twilight co-star Robert Pattinson.

“It’s just totally false. Rob and I are good friends. We went through a lot together, so we feel very close. But if we go out in public, every little detail is scrutinized, like the way I stand next to him.”

“And it’s like, I know the guy really fucking well,” she continues. “It’s only natural that we sort of lean on each other, because we’re put in the most fucking psychotic situations.”

I really loved him in Forgetting Sarah Marshall, but I think he’s just becoming annoying. I get that he’s a comedian, but he seems to always be this rocker. Does he actually play music? I’m too dumb to get it I guess. He’s like Sasha Cohen, but his character doesn’t change. Damn Brits and their high-brow layered comedians.

Well Nylon Guys decided he was good enough for their Winter issue. Apparently people who make Disney kids comedies with Adam Sandler are worthy of your attention. Snore.

While lurking through the profiles of our newest site and social network next.fashionindie, we came across possibly the coolest “barely legal” profile user on the face of the earth (besides me of course). Ladies and Gentlemen, meet fourteen year old New Yorker, Kristin Prim, creator and editor of her very own fashion magazine, Prim Magazine. I flipped through the online version of her newest issue and basically decided that this girl is my hero. Pages upon pages of awesome underground fashion designers, Sartorialist-esque fashion inspirations, edgy editorials, music interviews and film reviews are just some of the things waiting to be read in Prim Magazine. Who doesn’t love a rebellious teen that makes Nylon Magazine look mainstream? 

Enough of my interpretation of the magazine…let’s take a look at what Prim has to say herself:

We don’t know about you, but seeing talentless celebrities on the covers of magazines is getting old. 
Get some real talent out. 
Mix it up; take the undiscovered and make them visible. 
Give them a voice. 
Cover real things that matter and not just babbling celebs speaking about how drunk they were when they did that little dance on the table that fed a million bucks to hungry paparazzi. 
Let real talent shine and thrive. 
And make it good.

Take it from a snowboarding obsessed Buffalonian, you do NOT want to wear snowboard boots out in public. Not only will everyone make fun of you for looking like a tool (especially if you don’t actually snowboard and are wearing them for the sake of fashion) but the boots aren’t exactly graceful to walk in. Snowboard boots force you bend your knees when you walk, so by all means, if you want to imitate the kid next-door with cerebral palsy, then wearing snowboard boots is the way to go.

Lindsay Lohan will be gracing the cover of the first Korean release of Nylon Magazine this month. Apparently Lohan still hasn’t faded out of the spotlight in Korea yet, because the Korean editor was quoted more or less saying, “Get us Lindsay Lohan for our first issue.” Lohan looks less than impressive in this shoot however. She is plagued with unnatural facial emotions and not the best outfit choices I’ve seen. Not that I have a problem with Nylon, but am I the only one who thinks their models/photoshoots have been sub par of late? Step Yo’ Game Up Nylon!
