The movie follows Kitano as a Japanese gangster who wants out.  His bosses, however, want him to pull one last job out in Okinawa.  As with most last jobs, things go horribly awry leading Kitano and his team to hide out on the beach.  Once there, a lot of non-action happens, but much like Wong Kar-Wai does, Kitano manages to make this non-action incredibly beautiful.

Like every Film Friday entry, there are suits galore.  And like with most Film Fridays, it’s all about the fit and all about the details.  Even in the noir darkness, one can see that this plain blue blazer fits Kitano well.  And his colleague’s jacket, while it has gigantic lapels, is the perfect shade of grey for Spring or Summer, much like this Marc Jacobs blazer or these from Rag & Bone and Jil Sander.

Somehow, certain characters in the film manage to even make the most atrocious pieces look presentable if not downright stylish.  Check out this minor character’s tie, reminiscent of a collaboration between Beauty & Youth of Japan and The Hillside of New York.

Along with the floral ties are plenty of floral tops.  Again, the connotations of floral shirts (think Jimmy Buffett) are not exactly flattering, but the colors and patterns used make shirts like the ones above work.  Take notes, old white men traveling in Hawaii.  And the kid’s t-shirt in the first pic?  Not too different from the type of stuff Japanese brand 45rpm is doing.

There’s also a little bit of the weird here and there (if the floral tie didn’t do it for you).  Check out the pants on the somber gent to the left, oddly similar to this offering by the good folks at Oak.

Also, check out the other somber guy on the left, Mr. Short But Threatening, rocking a chalk-stripe suit not unlike this from Dolce & Gabbana or a reverse version of this Vivienne Westwood blazer.

And lest we forget about the ladies (a definite no-no), some more floral pieces.  The above like any number of tops you’ll see floating around this summer, the dress like prettier, more vibrant versions of these by Jean Paul Gaultier and Tsumori Chisato.

And, in a nutshell, there’s the style of Sonatine.  Like any previous Film Friday editions, of course not everyone will agree with this film’s inclusion as a movie with sartorial worth.  In fact, many will probably share the same opinion as Kitano’s character above.  The fact remains, though, that the characters in this film pull off both traditional and more daring pieces with ease and that makes it worth any Film Friday.

Of all the looks, this is my favorite…..the color, the design and styling options all add up to awesome!

SAINT-TROPEZ — “Saint-Tropez is about freedom — dress code included.”

With that declaration, Karl Lagerfeld summoned another rich fashion moment, parading Chanel’s cruise collection at sunset in front of Sénéquier, a mythic cafe with endless rows of red director’s chairs from which to watch the beautiful people stroll by.

Having spent more than four decades — on and off — soaking up the jet-set Riviera culture, Lagerfeld let rip a youthful and fetching collection. The models disembarked from a boat and strolled barefoot in tunics, jumpsuits and loose trousers with a yacht-stuffed harbor as the backdrop, evoking the hedonistic, holiday spirit of this legendary town.

“There’s something magical about Saint-Tropez. It’s so easy, and it doesn’t require overcomplicated clothes. It’s not a bling-bling place, it’s a natural place,” he said during fittings here on Monday, dressed head to toe in pale gray, the sun streaming in through the open doors of the Pan Deï Palais hotel.

In strolled a model in a psychedelic print chiffon dress, with a fitted bodice and a free-flowing skirt. “This you can wear for daytime. You don’t need a ball for [it],” Lagerfeld declared.

At the show, Chanel ambassador Vanessa Paradis tucked her small frame into a second-row seat to avoid the paparazzi scrum. She lauded the “beauty of the old city, the colors of the building and the water” in the vacation spot of her childhood. “I played percussion with the Gypsy Kings here when I was six,” she said, flashing her signature gap-tooth smile.

“It’s definitely a party town,” added Diane Kruger, who showed off her competitive streak Monday night during a Chanel-organized pétanque tournament. “We won three games,” she enthused.

The actress is on vacation, but is heading to Uzbekistan for her next movie role. “I play a French journalist who gets kidnapped by the Taliban,” she said.

Gaspard Ulliel, who is heading to the Cannes Film Festival for the premiere of his next feature, “La princesse de Montpensier,” said it was his first time in Saint-Tropez, which he equates with French celebrities and summertime frolicking. “It has a real atmosphere. It’s electric,” he said, surveying the crowds clustered on balconies or behind barricades to catch a glimpse of the fashion spectacle about to unfold.

Lagerfeld, who spends August sequestered at his villa at hideaway hotel La Réserve in nearby Ramatuelle, has seen Saint-Tropez in its heydays, shunned it in the Nineties, and saw it roar back in the past decade. He spends his time here much as he does in Paris — working, reading, sketching and daydreaming — albeit with magnificent Mediterranean vistas and with a quality of light to inspire any painter.

On occasion, he’ll cause a ruckus and descend into town to visit his favorite pharmacy, perfumery or Lapo Elkann’s Italia Independent shop, where Lady Amanda Harlech scored some “Avatar”-esque blue mirrored sunglasses. The VIP room, where Chanel’s after party was held, is another of the designer’s favorite addresses.

Lagerfeld said the collection was meant to evoke “the idea of Saint-Tropez,” from the sun-kissed colors of the port to iconic films such as “And God Created Woman” and its star, Brigitte Bardot. In his collection — and in the 17-minute film “Remember Now” he screened Monday night — were winks to French writer Colette, Françoise Hardy, Alain Delon and Mick and Bianca Jagger.

While often verging toward a vintage look — CC-logoed denim bell-bottoms, anyone? — the collection’s Sixties and Seventies references were mostly good fun, especially the chemise dresses, all manner of tunics, wide-leg pants and tubular dresses. A series of abundant white cotton looks, each cinched with a sash, were terrific, as were the long sundresses with tiered skirts. Low-heeled sandals and handbags in Vichy prints headlined the news in accessories.

Cruise represents an increasing, all-doors business for Chanel, including fast-growing emerging markets, according to Bruno Pavlovsky, president of Chanel fashion. “Business is booming for this kind of delivery,” he said.
Never mind climate change: According to Pavlovsky, “Customers love to see spring product in the boutiques in November.”

And though summer weather has yet to heat up much of Europe, many of Chanel’s well-heeled customers are almost ready to buy winter coats, and they’re in luck: The luxury pre-fall métiers d’art collection Lagerfeld showed in Shanghai in December is hitting stores now

Tomorrow marks the start of the holiday shopping frenzy, while I’m hear to hopefully make your job a bit easier. When is comes to buying gifts for guys my biggest advice would be to keep it simple. Buying clothes is not easy, so I like to stick to small accessories and unique pieces that show thought went into them, but can’t really be messed up.

1. Ties: I know it seems cliche to buy a guy a tie for Christmas (or whatever holiday you celebrate), but every guy needs them, and if it’s a good one it makes a great impression. Take for example this great Band Of Outsiders tie, it’s certainly not cheap, and it is unique enough that it looks like you put thought into the purchase (available at Opening Ceremony; $140).

2. Fragrance: Most guys own and where more than one scent It keeps girls on their toes, and they are often worn for different seasons, occasions, etc. A well thought out fragrance is always a good purchase. Don’t pick a particularly strong scent though, even some of the manliest of men don’t like an overpowering fragrance. I’ve become a huge fan of the Jeremy Scott for Six Scents fragrance (available at Oak NYC; $85.00).

3. Scarf: Every is wearing them, and they are a very useful item if you’re in a cold area. Be careful though, because buying the wrong scarf can end up the same way as buying an ugly shirt for someone. Keep is simple. Buy a versitile color or pattern, and ake sure it goes well with more than just their usual coat. I’ve been a huge fan of the American Apparel circle scarf I just picked up, it makes it really easy to bunch up around your neck and it doesn’t unravel and fall off (available at American Apparel; $28).

4. Work Bag: Think what you want, but just like women and their purses, a man can’t have too many work bags. I use mine all day everyday, to the point where the strap just breaks off. Show you put some thought into it though. Buy a higher end bag that has a little personality like this Billykirk x Opening Ceremony bag, rather than some shitty canvas one from The Gap (available at Opening Ceremony; $365)

5. A Weekender: Not to be confused with the previous work bag, a weekender is for someone who’s on the move a lot. A weekend here and weekend there, never more than about 3 days, but they have enough stuff that some packing is involved. A weekender is a must! Make sure you have a good one too, these will last just about a life time. I love this bag by Property Of just because of it’s size. You can really fit a good amount of stuff into a bag like this, and still be able to carry it around easily (available at Blackbird; $345).

6. Sunglasses: I wear mine all year around. Like many of the other pieces I’ve show you so far you want to get a pair that are practical yet have a little fun in them. I wouldn’t recommend getting to crazy either, stick to buying black or tortoise they go with everything. I’m a huge fan of everything Super has been doing, I actually have a pair on my Christmas list (available at Super.com; $244)

7. Cool Gadget Accessories: Gifting really unique accessories for (in this case) the person’s iPhone can be a great gift. Be warned though, make sure that you are 100% positive it is cool before you buy it, you don’t want to turn into that weird aunt who buys you stupid accessory things. I love this AnOther x Colette x Gareth Pugh iPhone case. Not too many people will have it, and it scores major scene points (available at Opening Ceremony; $95).

8. Rings: I knwo what you’re thinking, rings? But yeah rings! I’ve found most men wear atleast one ring at all times (even if it’s not their wedding band), so being able to find a really cool masculine ring makes for a great gift. Iona and Digby do an amazing job using old hunting and fishing motifs for their jewelry which make them perfect for gifting (available at DigbyandIona.com; $180)

9. Jewelry: Keeping in line with the previous pick, gifting jewelry (even to guys) is always a solid choice. Pick something simple and cool, none of this stupid “Jesus Piece” crap from a street vendor in Chinatown. I love the “Tar” collection from Alex and Chloe. The items are simple, and the black tar look gives them that additional edge (available at AlexandChloe.com; $64)

10. Books: A good book is never a bad gift. I recommend giving the “What A Man Should Know” Volume 1 book to any guy out there. Not only is it funny, but it’s pretty true too (available at J-Crew; $20)

Rochambeau debuts tonight at Oak! The event is from 6pm-9pm, and will be a great mix of music, models and champagne. They will also be featuring the launch of their life sized Spring look book. It’s at the Bond Street store, so don’t end up in Williamsburg!

I am in love with this unique jacket from Oak. It looks like a cardi, but it zips like a jacket. It’s a cool piece that I haven’t seen too many other places. It is totally the perfect Fall piece.
