I guess what they say about the grass always being greener on the other side is true. Despite the fact that our summer weather is nowhere near over, something about it being August and the school buses reappearing around our neighborhood makes me dream of wearing fall clothing again. I Lurve My New Risto Scarf

My favorite part of Fashion Week is attending the shows of innovative, up-and-coming designers. I’m drawn to designers who are create clothes that are artistic and outside the box, but still wearable. One of my favorite such designers is Risto Bimbiloski, so when I had the chance to scoop up this amazing galaxy print scarf at a steal, I was thrilled! So thrilled in fact, that I had to take a picture to share…despite the fact that as soon as I see the lens of a camera pointed at me, I immediately feel all kinds of awkward!

You’re so pretty scarf, I can’t stop staring at you…but I bet you get that all the time.

It looks like the online shopping options for Risto’s line are slim pickings at the moment, but I can’t wait to see what he comes out with for his Spring 2011 line!

Anthony Maule is
one of fashion’s most original young voices. With his talent for
creating expressive images that push technological boundaries, he is
fast becoming one of the industry’s most sought after talents

Christopher Michael: As someone who’s really grown up and been
nurtured by London, what is your sort of perception of New York in
comparison, as a different market?

Anthony Maule: Well, you come to New York to make money don’t you?!! It’s a business here and you have to have a product to sell; that’s the
message you get when you come here. London still aspires much more to
the ideal of being avant-garde, so the spirit there is still much more
about creation over commercialism.

I would recommend everyone go to London when they first start out just to experience it. I mean, I can only really talk about it from my
own perspective but when I first went to London it was the mid-late
90’s, there was this big energy there back then. It was cool to be the
poor struggling artist and I think there’s always been this general
opinion that everyone has about London being this hub of creative
energy.

It’s partly to do with the history of punk culture being born in the UK, even though aesthetically it doesn’t really exist on the street as
much anymore. The spirit of punk still exists in many different ways
and maybe always did even before it became a brand… It’s just inherent
to British culture to be like, “What the hell, I’m going to do what I
want.” People from all over still want to buy into that so they come,
they feed off of it for a while and they learn how to be individual.
London’s really good at that.

CM: How did you meet the editors you work with?

AM: The connection to Andrew [Richardson], Karl [Templer] and Olivier [Rizzo] was all through Guido, Marie [Chaix] was more of a sort
of organic process. Sometimes it seems that you just meet up with
people and it kind of clicks or it doesn’t. I’d seen Marie’s work and
she’d seen mine, we both liked each others’ work and it sort of went
from there. We met up and 2 weeks later we shot a story for Acne Paper,
it just sort of clicked. That was quite special.

I have a great relationship with Andrew as well… his office is around the corner. I’m interested in what he’s doing with Richardson
Magazine; I think it’s the perfect voice for him and we are always kind
of throwing crazy ideas around. He’s rather subversive…he always likes
to kind of subvert the flow (laughs). That’s why I really enjoy working
with him, because he’s someone who will really question something over
and over and I find it more interesting to work with those kinds of
people. I like the way he thinks and the way he references things. It’s
nice for me to work with someone who thinks like a photographer.

CM: It seems that you have your teams that you enjoy working with and have a great creative rapport with them…but there is always
that one person that you really sort of look forward to working with
one day…Who is that person for you?

AM: That I’ve not worked with? Big Mac….I’ve not met him (laughs).
I’ve read in some of your previous interviews about this sort of
cross-generational period where the new generations are having the
chance to work with their icons and I kind of feel like I’ve been very
fortunate so early in my career to work with a lot of my icons already.
To be able to collaborate with people like Fabien and Olivier [Rizzo]
already I just sort of went…off the wall, in a way. I didn’t
preconceive any of that, I was just surrounded by people like Julian
[Watson] and Guido who were incredibly supportive, believed in me, and
were interested in launching my career…Melanie Ward is another
incredible stylist that I’d really like to work with. People like that,
like Melanie and Joe, they are kind of structured, simplistic, and
graphic. I’m just naturally drawn to those kinds of people. I’m a bit
like that kid out of that Rodriguez film “Planet Terror”…you know, the
one with the toy dinosaur that says, “I want to eat your brains and
gain your knowledge.” I’m just fascinated by people with experience and
history in this business. I just see what we do as such a privilege
that I want to use it to educate myself, it makes it feel more real for
me that way. I have to say though that I’m just as interested in
working with people from my own generation and younger, it is totally
different but you can learn from everyone I think and especially now
the younger generations seem totally in control of the future so I’m
looking at working with a broader range of people now…….I’d love to
work with Panos too, his work just kills me

CM: Dream publication?

AM: French Vogue.

CM: Do you look at the arrival of digital as the reason behind an over saturation in fashion photography? Or do you look at it
as the reason behind an increased sense of opportunity for people to
work within the business…

AM: Well it’s postmodernism, isn’t it? That’s it. Perhaps it’s a weird term to use but that’s how I see it. That’s the world we live in
now, everything is over saturated so that everything, in itself, is
very modern and relevant. But it’s both really….of course there’s more
opportunity now and than there ever was and digital has definitely made
it more accessible to everyone, but I think we all start to see that
technology is bringing something very different, very new, to the table
and it is very exciting. It will force change and that’s a good thing.
The people that adapt to it and embrace it are ultimately the people
that will survive.

CM: You were saying print pages are being threatened as we head toward online media, yet somehow during economic threats and the
arrival of the online publishing world there seems to be numerous sort
of niche print publications opening up…

AM: I think that will always happen. We always need independent voices no matter what format they come in, but you know, the idea of
the print magazine as a luxury item is nothing new. Portfolio was
luxury, Egoiste was luxury; the idea has been around for years but I
think for a while now that’s the only thing that print media has been
left to aspire to become…As digital takes over, print publications will
simply become more and more desirable and collectable. So that’s the
point, if you can back it, it’s still an interesting time for the
independent voice in print media now and maybe that’s why you’ve seen
the interest, because they could see that happening and they’re
passionate about what they do. Look at Self-Service, it’s the perfect
example… it’s like buying a book, it’s the same price as a book!!
(laughs). It’s totally decadent and embracing the times in its own way.
I love it! There’s something very nostalgic about print media now and
we still need those people who are obsessed with it to keep it alive.

CM: So what about now, what’s next? What can we look forward to this season?

AM: Ah, hah! Well, this season will be very exciting… lots of changes, new editors…I don’t want to say too much. It’s just all
evolving and the industry is so transient, what I say today is going to
be different tomorrow anyway, so that’s it. I’m really excited about
what’s going to happen over the next 12 months…

Sinners and Saynt: Torture Coutorture, Round Deux

Let me be the first to admit it, yeah I’m an asshole. I’ve never claimed to be the nicest person in fashion and I’ve never made it seem like I’d ever sugar coat my thoughts or views. I just want to be as honest as possible and give an opinion which is well within my freedom of speech and expression.

So I said some mean things. So I posted unflattering pictures of a rival. Sue me. It isn’t like I said shit that hasn’t been said before, behind peoples backs, without them knowing, said in jest so it’s “okay”. I’m saying the stuff some folks in fashion are afraid to say and now I’m getting flacked for it. Well, fine. I’m okay with being the media’s whipping boy for a few cracks, as long as I get my point across it’s all good.

Now onto part deux of Torture Coutorture in which Julie responds to her company’s idiotic practices, I try to make good with one of the few nice people in fashion, and I apologize (kind-of) for being a royal doucher

The email from Julie came in on Friday, soon after the Coutorture crew realized that the story had gone viral and was on sites like Gawker and Refinery29 (great Civil War pict, seriously). The email had all the details we were initially looking for as to why we were kicked off their pubescent network. Basically, Meghan and Sarah had been reading through Fashion Indie, red-flagged a post as offensive (just one?) and made efforts with Julie to kick us off. When the issue was properly explained, kicking us off the network made perfect sense since they are try to foster a sedated message across their publisher sites. So, playing nice for advertisers (wait, they don’t have any) trumped freedom of speech and we were kicked off. Understandable. We never stated we we’re a PC site. We’ve been pushing envelopes since day one and we get it if certain folks don’t want to associate themselves with us. That’s okay. What’s is not okay is how the issue was originally handled with anonymous comments and criptic emails from the Coutorture crew.

Next Julie explained why they didn’t do the right thing from the beginning…

We are concerned with the culture of fear in blogging and indeed we had been concerned to address these issues with you and the Fashion Indie team for sometime precisely because we were afraid of your reaction given your preferred methods of engagement. Sadly we let that fear color our short email towards you ending our relationship because we did not wish to go into detail lest it be used against us. For this we apologize sincerely.

Hold up. Numero uno, I’m not a scary dude. Ask anyone who knows me or has met me in person and they’ll tell you that I’m a pretty easy going, rational individual. I’ve never engaged in such “methods of engagement” before so it made no sense for Coutorture to assume (make an ass out of you and me) that this is they way we would respond if they had initially treated us with some respect and explained themselves properly.

Two, Julie, Sarah and Meghan all know me personally. I’ve known Julie for nearly three years and while she has remained the same cold fish she’s always been, I’ve been nothing but personable and friendly with the girl. Personally, I think she’s suffering from an Anna Wintour complex, but that’s just from observing her sitting at runway shows, with her sunglasses on, not speaking to anyone, not even me when I go up to her and say hello. Sorry, I just believe that people like that don’t belong in fashion. Sarah is also another Coutorture chick I’ve known for sometime. Our editor IM’s her on the daily and we’ve maintained a friendly relationship. We’re always ready to blast anything she requested out to our email list and we’ve been more than kind to her. So her responding this way was also idiotic and childish.

And three, GROW SOME FUCKING COJONES. YOU’RE IN BUSINESS JULIE AND YOUR NETWORK MAKES MAJOR CLAIMS. YOU ARE GOING TO HAVE TO LEARN CONFLICT RESOLUTION AT SOME POINT OR AT LEAST LEARN TO CRAFT A PROPER EMAIL.

So basically, Julie admitted to not handling the situation well, apologized and all is once again good in the world of online fashion blogging. Congrats on being the bigger person, it’s not always the easy thing to do.

Next Up, I apolize to Fat Folks.

I know it’s not easy being fat. I tipped the scale at 270 when I was 17 and that was the worst time in my life. I’m still not the thinnest dude on the block (there hasnt been a pair of skinny jeans that have met the crease of my crack) but honestly folks, is it so wrong to call someone fat? They make it seem like I’m a monster for stating something that everyone else is aware of. You’re fat, it’s okay, it’s not the best thing in the world to be, and you’ll probably die earlier than those of a moderate weight, but it’s okay cause that extra slice of cheesecake is so worth it, right?!? No one is forcing you to be overweight. No one is telling you to overeat. And in a society of liposuction, gastric bypass, and Alli, there is no reason why you can’t drop a few pounds, unless of course you like being fat, in which you shouldn’t be offended if I say you are. Yeah, I would love it if this wasn’t the case, if we could all sing around the campfire and gouge our eyes out so we can’t see each others imperfections, but that’s not the way life works and if you’re are in an industry that stresses the need for lack of flaws, it’s a little difficult to get by with such a big one.

I’m all for big is beautiful and I’ve had my share of thick loves in my life, but enough is enough. It’s okay if you want to be fat, just be ready for the occasional stare, chuckle or thoughtless comment.

I’m sorry for offending anyone with my fat jokes or commentary. Just don’t be too hard on yourself, it’s not easy being a big girl in a size zero world.

Sarah, I am honestly sorry if any of my comments hurt your feelings. That was never my intent.

Now on to Terrorist.

Terrorists,

I’m sorry for associating Turbans to your practices of mass terror and destruction. You see, over here in America we have magazines like The New Yorker and a station called Fox News which is run by super racist-bigot billionaire Rupert Murdock. On it, all the men who attack and attempt to destroy our country wear turbans, have beards, and weird names I don’t understand like Akemed Ikahina bin Laden.

Really? Who decided this was a good idea?

These images of turban wearing terrorist fester in my weak mind and I begin to associate all terrorist as turban wearing middle easterners. I realize that not all terrorist wear turbans, so it was wrong to associate all of you together and adhere to such a stereotype. I now understand that some of you may enjoy wearing fitted New Era caps or knit hats, some of you out there may wear Sunday Derby sunhats or may choose to rock a nice suede kippot when you’re feeling fiesty. It was wrong to think all of you wear turbans and I’m sorry if I offended you with my comments.

So that’s about it indies. I know it’s been a harrowing ordeal for some of you, but the whole thing was pretty easy for us. This week we plan to launch an initiative to prevent such things from happening to bloggers in networks and to provide a means to identify sites that aren’t censored by their networks. P.S. In one day Fashion Indie was compared to Fox News and the Bush Administration for stating the facts and reporting on our experience. Damn, there must be something really wrong in the world when battling a larger power, defending your freedom of speech, and speaking up against censorship is considered Republican.
